Sean Goode resigned from the Canton Police Department amid an internal affairs investigation. Michael Proctor was fired from the Massachusetts State Police. Four officers connected to the Sandra Birchmore case have been decertified or permanently barred from law enforcement. And a lawsuit alleges that the documented record of misconduct between Proctor and Goode stretches back more than ten years — a decade of messages that, according to the complaint, include racial slurs, antisemitic statements, discussions of planting evidence, and a derogatory slur directed at Sandra Birchmore herself.Officers are being removed. But is the culture that produced them being addressed?That's the question at the center of this piece. According to federal prosecutors, three Stoughton police officers allegedly became involved with the same young woman they met through a police youth program — and none of it was caught internally until long after her death. According to Read's lawsuit, Proctor and Goode allegedly exchanged hateful messages for a decade without a single person in either agency flagging it. Both cases ran through the same Norfolk County DA's office. Both required federal intervention.Every time these officers were confronted, the response followed the same pattern: the messages were “juvenile.” They were “personal.” They had “zero impact” on the investigations. One officer's family called it “wrongful termination” and said the messages prove he's “human.” Another allegedly said the woman at the center of the allegations “lied about everything.”Nobody has said the culture was the problem. Nobody has acknowledged that the institutional environment allowed this to happen. I am a priest, theologian, and disability justice advocate, and I have lived with permanent disability for over thirty years. My theological work is inseparable from my lived experience. Diagnosed in childhood with a rare hereditary bone condition and later left permanently disabled following a cancerous spinal tumour, I have spent much of my life navigating churches, institutions, and sacred spaces, drawing attention to the reality that they were not designed with bodies like mine in mind.What brought me to this point is a long journey of wrestling with faith, suffering, vocation, and belonging. Though I love the Church deeply, I also know, painfully and personally, how often it has failed disabled people, not simply through thoughtlessness but through theology, architecture, and inherited assumptions about what a “proper” Christian body looks like. My current focus is on helping the Church reimagine itself theologically and practically around what I call a risen-body anthropology: a vision of humanity shaped not by ideals of perfection or self-sufficiency, but by the wounded, risen body of Christ.Tell us about your new book,Breaking, not BrokenWhat is it about? What inspired you to decide to write this?Breaking, not Broken is a theological critique of ableism in the Church and a constructive vision for how Christian theology, heritage, worship, and memory might be re-formed through the lens of disability. It argues that ableism is not a marginal pastoral issue but a deep theological distortion that has shaped how the Church imagines God, holiness, leadership, healing, and the human body.I was inspired to write this book because I realised that many conversations about disability in churches stop far too early. We talk about inclusion or access, but rarely ask what kind of God our buildings, liturgies, and doctrines proclaim. Over years of ministry, and particularly since becoming a Residentiary Canon at York Minster, I have seen how sacred heritage can both proclaim the gospel and quietly contradict it. This book is my attempt to draw attention to that tension, and to offer hope that the Church can be re-membered, put back together differently, more faithfully, around the wounded and risen Christ.You write about accessibility and heritage in churches but go beyond the idea of “a ramp or a hearing loop”. What do these concepts mean to you, and how might your vision look different from current practice?Ramps and hearing loops matter. They are essential, and I would never wish to minimise them. But on their own, they risk treating disabled people as a logistical problem rather than as a theological presence. Accessibility, as I understand it, is not just about entry; it is about belonging, authority, visibility, and memory.Heritage is especially important here. Churches often treat heritage as something neutral to be preserved, when in fact it is a theological act of remembering that shapes who is seen as holy, central, or authoritative. My vision seeks answers to deeper questions: Who were our buildings designed for? Whose bodies do our liturgies assume?

I have written thousands of words about the joys of eating hot dogs, so when Memorial Day rolls around, this serious eater's thoughts immediately turn to the humble frankfurter. A couple of years ago we had my friend and fellow food writer J.J. After covering David Wilcock for over a decade---focusing on his fake prophecies and channellings, his promises of ascension and hover cars, his fraudulent aerospace company, and other outrageous claims that never came true---we have learned that he died by self-inflicted gunshot wound. Several of his critics have been blamed for his death, despite these people being the ones pointing out his delusion and trying to get him help. Even offering direct assistance. On the other hand, his 'love and light' followers have smelled the blood in the water like a shark and are, in the most unhinged ways fathomable, gleefully exploiting his death for clicks, donations, and delusional conspiracy theories. Even extremely popular alternative media have used the story to advance their own agenda. It appears there are many people who didn't know anything about him, but who are doing the same thing. We never wished David harm, although we pointed out that he was close to the breaking point for years. The worst we wished for him was that he faced karmic retribution for his destructive delusions, i.e., everything that he gained while selling falsehood would be taken away. Interestingly, David appeared to personally realize this in the end. He acknowledged that he was facing karma, that he was not talking to an archangel or an ancient deity from Egypt, nor did mass arrests occur, or full alien disclosure the way that he fantasized it to occur. He appeared to even recognize that his aerospace company was a scam. Being too prideful and egotistic, he still played it down despite the obvious mental crisis visible on the surface. He spent considerable time on each of his shows talking about how it is hard to push forward each day. His substance use, perhaps abuse, coupled with the decimation of his life's work, and the even more delusional followers that kept amplifying his instability and financing it, all contributed to his demise. It appears in the end, with no humor intended, that the truth killed him. The truth that he was wrong, and because he was wrong and didn't admit it, he continued to pour his remaining money and hope into fraud--inside knowing that he messed up. According to police dispatch, he said that he ran out of money. He took the only option that he felt that he had. In the end, it appears that David probably would have enjoyed his name being at the center of a UFO, anti-gravity, conspiracy. Thus, we are not defending David by putting words in his mouth. We are defending his actual words and behavior. Her nonfiction writing on intersectional feminism, female friendship, motherhood, gender, and race in culture, TV, film, and literature has appeared in BuzzFeed, New Republic, New York Magazine, Longreads, Elle, Catapult, Refinery29, and elsewhere. She received her BA and MFA from Columbia University and currently teaches at Stanford University, where she was honored with the 2025 Walter J. Canton PD announced on November 3rd that a police department member was placed on paid administrative leave on October 24th due to misconduct allegations discovered during an investigation into a former member of a different law enforcement agency (later revealed to be Sergeant Goode). Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox is facing calls to be placed on the "Brady list" by Karen Read's defense attorney, Alan Jackson, who alleges Cox lied in a statement to the media regarding his involvement in the Karen Read case. An email from the FBI to Commissioner Cox, following up on a phone call and discussing discovery turned over to the prosecution, contradicts Cox's claims of no involvement. Boston 25 Investigates uncovered a loophole in the Massachusetts State Police's GPS tracking system. Hundreds of cruisers are equipped with a "kill switch" that allows tracking to be disabled. This feature was highlighted in the investigation of former state police detective Michael Proctor, who was fired for conduct revealed in the Karen Read murder trial. Proctor's tracker was off during an alleged overtime shift where he and Canton police detective Kevin Albert were drinking. A new policy has been implemented requiring permission and written approval for disabling the system in "limited extraordinary circumstances."
