Guelph ON's Alanna Gurr joins us on Episode 623 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about her latest album, "Life Of the Party", which she worked on during COVID lockdown with singer-songwriter and producer Jim Bryson. There's a wonderfully fragile quality to this album, that seems to fit the strange times we're living through. We wrap up the rest of the episode with more of the latest new releases, and this time round we hear from The Ebbs, Malcolm McWatt, Harley Kimbro Lewis, Jean-Michel Blais, woe11er, Colin James and Richard Koechli. If you like the artists you hear on this show and want to support them, don't just stream their music – BUY their music and then you'll really make a difference to their income during this difficult time when it's much more challenging to find live show opportunities. Guelph ON singer-songwriter James Gordon joins us on Episode 607 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about his pandemic release “When I Stayed Home”. Unable to bring anyone into the studio, James pretty much recorded the whole thing himself. However, making a new album was not the only thing that James Gordon has been up to during Covid lockdown. He also finished his novel “The Ark Of The Oven Mitt” (which includes a 36 song recording) and performed a virtual tour of his one-man show “James Gordon's Emergency Climate Musical”. He also found time to kick cancer's butt (Yeah, James!) and all, while still working at his other job as a member of Guelph City Council. As you can imagine, we had lots to talk about, which is why we've decided to give the whole of this episode over to the interview. So, settle down and enjoy James Gordon… in Conversation on Folk Roots Radio. This is our full interview with Guelph singer-songwriter Sue Smith, chatting about her brilliant new album "Tonight We Sail". Sue Smith has just released a wonderful new album with the Potion Kings, "Tonight We Sail", a gorgeous blend of rock, jazz, blues and roots. The new recording features nine original songs plus a song each by Tom Petty ("Swingin'") and Robbie Robertson ("Ophelia"). Recorded live off the floor at Scott Merritt's studio, The Cottage in Guelph ON, it features Sue Smith (vocals, organ on several tracks) with the Potion Kings - Jeff Bird on bass, Kevin Breit on guitar, Randall Coryell on drums and Howie Southwood on percussion. Folk trio Boreal, who feature singer-songwriters Katherine Wheatley, Tannis Slimmon and Angie Nussey, join us on Episode 555 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about their holiday show, "Songs For The Snowy Season". In early December, each year, Boreal head out on the road for a series of shows that celebrate winter and the upcoming Christmas season. Because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, things are going to be a bit different this year. Instead of a whole series of shows, there will be just one performance - a FREE live-streamed performance direct from the River Run Centre in Guelph ON on December 11. It’s a fun interview, and it’s always great to be able to chat with Katherine, Tannis and Angie about their Christmas show, especially as this year - everyone, wherever they are, can enjoy one of the highlights of our holiday season. We continue the snow song theme through the rest of the episode and also feature music by Ellis Delaney, The Hello Darlins, Dayna Manning, RUNA, Ted Yoder, Tara MacLean & Adam Brazier and Melissa Ferrick. Boreal are a fabulous folk trio featuring three great singer-songwriters: Guelph ON's Katherine Wheatley and Tannis Slimmon and Orillia ON's Angie Nussey. They get together in early December each year for a series of shows that celebrate 'the snowy season' with some wonderful original songs and holiday classics. This year, however, is going to be a bit different because we're in the midst of the Covid pandemic - so instead of a whole series of shows, there will be just one performance. But guess what... this time around they'll be livestreaming a FREE 'virtual performance' from the River Run Centre in Guelph on Friday December 11 at 8 p.m. so that everyone, no matter where they are, can enjoy a show that has become a highlight of our holiday season. Alongside the upcoming live-streamed show, Boreal have also released a great new single, a Katherine Wheatley song, "Snow Falls Down". Folk Roots Radio caught up with Katherine, Tannis and Angie for a fun chat about the upcoming livestream and the new single. If you'd like to register for the livestream - remember it's FREE, you can do so by signing up for the River Run Centre newsletter: https://riverrun.ca/whats-on/boreals-songs-for-a-snowy-season-digital-performance/ Music: Boreal "Snow Falls Down" (single), "Warm Hands" (single) and "Carol Of The Bells" & "Gotta Go" from "Winter’s Welcome" (2014, Self).

After two album releases and a couple of singles, the Toronto-based band are really gaining traction, and have already developed a loyal fan base. Tannis Slimmon has been making music for over 30 years. Tannis grew up in a musical family on a farm in Manitoba before moving to Guelph ON in 1980, announcing herself on the Canadian folk scene as a member of the critically acclaimed Bird Sisters (with Jude Vadala and Sue Smith). Since then, her music career has gone from strength to strength – with three great solo albums (with support from her partner Lewis Melville), taking home Contemporary Vocalist of the Year at the 2008 Canadian Folk Music Awards, for her second solo album, the fabulous “Lucky Blue”. Tannis has also been involved in many other musical collaborations including vocal groups Essentia & Ondine Chorus, The Lucky Sisters and currently Boreal (with Jude Vadala and Katherine Wheatley). Boreal’s annual Songs For The Snowy Season concerts start in late November. For more information on this year’s dates, visit borealsongs.ca. There’s also a new duo – Sweetcorn and Sunflower with fellow Guelph based singer-songwriter Annie Sumi – they’re just back from a tour that took them out to Vancouver Island. Check out the great video session they recorded at BNB studios HERE. The good news, for such an accomplished artist, is that Tannis is now able to make music full-time allowing her a renewed focus on her solo career, and her other projects. We caught up with Tannis Slimmon at home in Guelph to chat about her music. Visit Tannis Slimmon online at tannis.ca. Music: Tannis Slimmon “Our Time Now” from “Lucky Blue” (2007, Self), “Good News” from “In And Out Of Harmony” (2013, Self) and Boreal “Shovelling Snow” from “Winter’s Welcome” (2014, Self).

Time Codes: 00:00:24 - Introduction 00:03:27 - Setup of interview 00:06:00 - Interview with Seth 01:51:43 - Wrap up 01:52:32 - Contact us The Man from Guelph On this interview episode, Derek is pleased to have as his guest one of his favorite creators, Seth. His latest volume of Palookaville was published last year by Drawn and Quarterly, and while every release of Seth's signature series is worth noting, this one is particularly significant. It wraps up his "Clyde Fans" storyline, one he began in 1997 in Palookaville #10. Derek asks Seth about the process of undertaking this ongoing narrative and the considerations of sustaining it for twenty years. They also discuss the autobiographical "Nothing Lasts," a series that Seth began in volume 21 of Palookaville. Much of the conversation concerns Seth's autobiographical storytelling, or his faux-autobiographical comics (in the case of It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken), and the ways in which the past informs his sense of place and identity. Indeed, memory is a major theme in Seth's stories, and the two spend a good deal of time talking about it as a defining feature of his comics. But while much of the discussion centers on the most recent volume of Palookaville, Derek also asks his guest about the general trajectory of his career. They talk about his sketchbook comics, such as Wimbledon Green and The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists, his evolving illustration style, the creation of Dominion, the melancholy George Sprott: 1894-1975, his rubber stamp diary, his life-defining relationships with Chester Brown and Joe Matt, his design and illustration work for Fantagraphics' Complete Peanuts series and Lemony Snicket's All the Wrong Questions books, his plans for future issues of Palookaville, and his wife's business, Crown Barber Shop.
