This week on Hey Sis, Eat This, things get a little fishy…literally. Courtney, Whitney, and Momma Ashley dish on everything from a dangerously delicious tuna sandwiches, to Momma's canned meat creations and Fall inspired recipes. The episode kicks off with Whitney's concern that Courtney is one panini away from mercury poisoning due to her obsession with the tuna mousse sandwich at her “office” Joe & the Juice. Meanwhile, Momma's been busy catering a top-secret wedding (that isn't so secret anymore) after telling everyone about the menu at her monthly book club. Even more shocking is the lunch she served at book club, a retro “meat mousse” made with deviled ham that has the girls gagging.  They round out the episode with their latest fall favorites. Whitney declares her Lemony, Parmy White Beans a total panty dropper, while Courtney shows off her pumpkin pie topped with Momma's famous praline — which she's now putting on just about anything that stands still.  They also give a sneak peek at next week's boozy brewery episode with the Martin House Brewing Co. brothers, Cody and Dylan. Martin House Brewing Co. brothers, Cody and Dylan. And just when you think it's over, Courtney gets a surprise visit that scares her worse than Whitney's Halloween decorations. The best-selling American writer Daniel Handler is perhaps better known by his pen name, Lemony Snicket. Lemony is the cynical narrator of a thirteen book saga called A Series of Unfortunate Events. It's the tale of three unlucky orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sonny Baudelaire, who are hounded by their guardian, the sinister Count Olaf. The books are a phenomenon, selling more than 70 million copies around the world, along with a film starring Jim Carrey and a series on Netflix. Lemony has published many more books for children, and Daniel has also written seven novels for adults under his own name, as well as a screenplay inspired by Verdi's Rigoletto. He's also a keen accordion player and has performed with bands including Death Cab for Cutie, the Decemberists and the Magnetic Fields. Daniel has described himself as an ‘unrepentant classical zealot' and his musical choices include Dvořák, Scriabin and Berlioz.

In our penultimate episode about the Baudelaire orphans, we follow the children to the Mortmain Mountains (The Slippery Slope) and under the sea (The Grim Grotto). Our romp through the snow-covered mountains is quite fun, despite the reintroduction of an old enemy (Carmelita Spats) and the presence of Isadora Quagmire's poetry. However, when it comes to The Grim Grotto, we have to admit that we don't actually like this book all that much. Sorry, Lemony! No hard feelings. This week, Josh and Dietrich build a playlist around the demented holiday classic A Nightmare Before Christmas. Despite being a bit of a grouch about Christmas, Josh has always enjoyed the skewed gothic comedy of this tale of Halloween trying to steal the holidays, and recommends the Terry Pratchett classic Hogfather along side the anarchic glee of Gremlins. Dietrich talks about the ability of children to "embrace the weird", and looks to A Series of Unfortunate Events as a natural companion with the dark humor, style, and joyful mayhem. Josh wraps the discussion up with a brilliant masterpiece of a novel from Clive Barker, and finally, they both rave about the short-lived comedy Pushing Daisies. Next week, the pair will tackle the task of recommending the next great story for those who either love Harry Potter, or find the author problematic and want a different path to take. Time Codes: 00:00:24 - Introduction 00:03:27 - Setup of interview 00:06:00 - Interview with Seth 01:51:43 - Wrap up 01:52:32 - Contact us The Man from Guelph On this interview episode, Derek is pleased to have as his guest one of his favorite creators, Seth. His latest volume of Palookaville was published last year by Drawn and Quarterly, and while every release of Seth's signature series is worth noting, this one is particularly significant. It wraps up his "Clyde Fans" storyline, one he began in 1997 in Palookaville #10. Derek asks Seth about the process of undertaking this ongoing narrative and the considerations of sustaining it for twenty years. They also discuss the autobiographical "Nothing Lasts," a series that Seth began in volume 21 of Palookaville. Much of the conversation concerns Seth's autobiographical storytelling, or his faux-autobiographical comics (in the case of It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken), and the ways in which the past informs his sense of place and identity. Indeed, memory is a major theme in Seth's stories, and the two spend a good deal of time talking about it as a defining feature of his comics. But while much of the discussion centers on the most recent volume of Palookaville, Derek also asks his guest about the general trajectory of his career. They talk about his sketchbook comics, such as Wimbledon Green and The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists, his evolving illustration style, the creation of Dominion, the melancholy George Sprott: 1894-1975, his rubber stamp diary, his life-defining relationships with Chester Brown and Joe Matt, his design and illustration work for Fantagraphics' Complete Peanuts series and Lemony Snicket's All the Wrong Questions books, his plans for future issues of Palookaville, and his wife's business, Crown Barber Shop.
