The best-selling American writer Daniel Handler is perhaps better known by his pen name, Lemony Snicket. Lemony is the cynical narrator of a thirteen book saga called A Series of Unfortunate Events. It's the tale of three unlucky orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sonny Baudelaire, who are hounded by their guardian, the sinister Count Olaf. The books are a phenomenon, selling more than 70 million copies around the world, along with a film starring Jim Carrey and a series on Netflix. Lemony has published many more books for children, and Daniel has also written seven novels for adults under his own name, as well as a screenplay inspired by Verdi's Rigoletto. He's also a keen accordion player and has performed with bands including Death Cab for Cutie, the Decemberists and the Magnetic Fields. Daniel has described himself as an ‘unrepentant classical zealot' and his musical choices include Dvořák, Scriabin and Berlioz.

And, I'd like to say to my first running mate, who I will not dignify with a name check, but had that woman not dropped out, and then had I not had to replace her with another figure, who turned out not to be able to bear the weight of public scrutiny, had I not been betrayed by those two jackrabbits, who knows? This week, Josh and Dietrich build a playlist around the demented holiday classic A Nightmare Before Christmas. Despite being a bit of a grouch about Christmas, Josh has always enjoyed the skewed gothic comedy of this tale of Halloween trying to steal the holidays, and recommends the Terry Pratchett classic Hogfather along side the anarchic glee of Gremlins. Dietrich talks about the ability of children to "embrace the weird", and looks to A Series of Unfortunate Events as a natural companion with the dark humor, style, and joyful mayhem. Josh wraps the discussion up with a brilliant masterpiece of a novel from Clive Barker, and finally, they both rave about the short-lived comedy Pushing Daisies. Next week, the pair will tackle the task of recommending the next great story for those who either love Harry Potter, or find the author problematic and want a different path to take. Executive produced by Emmy Award-winner Barry Sonnenfeld and Daniel Handler - the new season of A Series of Unfortunate Events consists of ten cinematic one-hour episodes, and premiered worldwide in the spring 2018, exclusively on Netflix. A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans – Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – and their extraordinary encounters with the devious Count Olaf who will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. In this episode of THE ANNOTATOR, Jim Dooley discusses balancing some of the more menacing and psychological Bernard Herrmann influences with the whimsical nature of the books and series. His latest volume of Palookaville was published last year by Drawn and Quarterly, and while every release of Seth's signature series is worth noting, this one is particularly significant. It wraps up his "Clyde Fans" storyline, one he began in 1997 in Palookaville #10. Derek asks Seth about the process of undertaking this ongoing narrative and the considerations of sustaining it for twenty years. They also discuss the autobiographical "Nothing Lasts," a series that Seth began in volume 21 of Palookaville. Much of the conversation concerns Seth's autobiographical storytelling, or his faux-autobiographical comics (in the case of It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken), and the ways in which the past informs his sense of place and identity. Indeed, memory is a major theme in Seth's stories, and the two spend a good deal of time talking about it as a defining feature of his comics. But while much of the discussion centers on the most recent volume of Palookaville, Derek also asks his guest about the general trajectory of his career. They talk about his sketchbook comics, such as Wimbledon Green and The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists, his evolving illustration style, the creation of Dominion, the melancholy George Sprott: 1894-1975, his rubber stamp diary, his life-defining relationships with Chester Brown and Joe Matt, his design and illustration work for Fantagraphics' Complete Peanuts series and Lemony Snicket's All the Wrong Questions books, his plans for future issues of Palookaville, and his wife's business, Crown Barber Shop.

The first unfortunate event was this movie getting greenlit, and the most recently was our having to watch it.  Hopefully this will put an end to Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.  Actually, it's a pretty entertaining movie, though Bobby disagrees, as he takes the movie--and Jim Carrey--to task.

It's National Geography Week and Children's Book Week, November 12-19. And we have just the tale to celebrate both occasions: Hansel and Gretel (a la Lemony Snicket meets Wizard of Oz). We are back in San Jose, having been to Sacramento to appear on the ABC-affiliated show Sac and Company and to Modesto to perform at the library this week. We'll tell you a bit about the inner workings of a live TV show. And right now Zephyr is helping pull apart Callson Manor, the haunted house he worked at last week, while we babysit the property at night. Nominated for Storytelling Podcast Award! Our story "Simple Ivan" has been selected as one of 12 finalists in the Pickle Tales "Tell Me a Story" Podcasting Competion. Now listener votes will determine if it moves to the next round. Register with Podcast Pickle so you can participate in the voting process November 13-16! And so long as you are at it be sure to add us to your favorites http://activated.podcastpickle.com and leave us your comments. Please check back for more information and links November 13th. Hansel and GretelHansel and Gretel get ditched in the woods and have to escape an evil hag who lives in a sweet house and find their way back home. In our version they meet a few other storybook characters who give them some bad directions along the way. National Geography Week We've been traveling full time since 1992 and have had more than our share of bad directions. Nowadays, we use GPS, computer map programs and Google Maps on our cell phone to get where we are going. But way back when we started touring, we had to rely on people to give us directions. It's amazing we got anywhere! Hardly anyone knows the name of the streets in their hometown. And we have repeatedly scratched our heads after hearing "Well, you turn left at the old Jones place and if you come to the train tracks you've gone to far!". And "Just turn right at the corn field." We'd like to point out that we are in Kansas and surrounded by cornfields but don't have the heart. So bottom line, study those maps and read those street signs so you can help someone find their way. And if you want to get anywhere, learn your geography and how to use a GPS! Or else you will have to leave some bread crumbs! Rescources for National Geography Week Children's Book Week Zephyr has been reading the entire "Series of Unfortunate Events" to mom and dad this month. And in this episode Dennis recounts his encounter with Daniel Handler (a.k.a. Lemony Snicket). Reading out loud is an excellent way to celebrate Children's Book Week. We hope you'll celebrate by following a map to your local library to see what special events they have planned. And while you are there, check out some childrens' books. Especially in the folktale section (Dewey Decimal 398.2). And be sure to get a copy of "Tales from Under the Crevice" or the sequel "Tales from Under the Nook" by our resident young author Zephyr Goza at your library or bookstore, or online at CreviceTales.com.
