Jean-Michel est un homme sensible et qui a une volonté de toujours apprendre et de se dépasser. Retirement has been anything but quiet for Jean-Michel Blais. He left his post as the Chief of Halifax Regional Police in 2019, after a six year term. Before that, he'd spent 25 years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. His career highlights have included three tours with the United Nations in Haiti. And he's also found and developed another passion on the ice as a hockey referee. He says all of his experiences have been distilled down to the characteristics a good leader needs to be able to lead well in these challenging and complex times. The result is his new book “Working the Blue Lines: Lessons in leadership from hockey and policing".

Pulsations , the new record from Canadian violinist Angele Dubeau , infuses time, rhythm and heart. The music (coming from modern composers like Olafur Arnalds, Jean-Michel Blais and Craig Armstrong) was selected by Dubeau, and strives to evoke imagery and emotional intensity. The contemporary sounds of these composers could fall into the post-minimalist movement, but putting the works into a box of genre or group could take away from the experience that the album (and the singular works) aim to instill. Classiclectic host Kurt Hauswirth had a chance to speak with Angele by phone, where they discussed the importance of modern composers, as well as the challenges and rewards of working as a classical violinist:

By the time he was studying for his bar mitzvah, he was molested by a second perpetrator. Both men were members of staff at his school - the Yeshiva Centre in Melbourne, Australia.In this searingly honest, compelling and sometimes angry conversation with Olly, he recalls how he was groomed, abused, disbelieved, and shunned - and recounts the moment he decided, aged 18, to turn his back on Hasidic Judaism for ever - and join the Israeli Defense Force.(In 2013, Manny's second abuser, David Cyprys, was sentenced to eight years for sexually abusing Manny and eight other boys. Manny is now CEO of Kol v'Oz, established in Israel in 2016 to prevent child sexual abuse in Jewish communities globally. While I didn't get to go to SXSW this year, I still enjoyed the heck out of listening to all the amazing music. Last week saw a featuring Halifax police chief Jean-Michel Blais. The forum, held at the North Branch library, was meant to address recently-released data that showed that Black Haligonians are subject to street checks at three times the rate of whites. While the intention of the meeting was ostensibly to mend fences, it went quickly off the rails - to put it mildly. Former poet laureate and Halifax Examiner columnist El Jones was at the meeting and will join us in a bit to discuss what went down. Plus, the Cornwallis Baptist church will soon become the , city council pushed 's proposed 20-storey apartment building (aka. 'the student craphole of the future') to a public hearing, and city staff recommending public consultation on campaign finance reform.
