In this Week 40 edition of the GMS Weekly Podcast, we review the latest movements across global ship recycling. As October begins, markets reflect a sharp slowdown with weaker currencies, falling oil, and softer steel prices across India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Turkey. Global Market Overview • Global trading indices fell by about sixteen percent, marking the sharpest weekly decline since January. • Oil prices eased to around sixty dollars per barrel, about twenty percent lower than the same time last year. • Currencies remained under pressure, with the Indian rupee near eighty-nine, the Pakistani rupee around two-hundred eighty-three, and the Turkish lira at forty-one point seven to the dollar. • Steel prices stayed mixed. India slipped to about four-hundred and two dollars per ton, Bangladesh held near five-hundred and twenty, and Pakistan stayed firm around six-hundred and twenty. Regional Highlights Bangladesh: Activity remained limited as local yards stayed mostly idle. The market continues to absorb the impact of HKC upgrades, limited supply, and political uncertainty. Steel prices held steady near USD 520 per ton. India: Alang faced another difficult week. The rupee reached a record low of eighty-eight point seven-four, and domestic steel fell to about USD 402 per ton. One sale was reported, the Bow Cedar from Odfjell, at USD 940 per LDT supported by strong stainless-steel content. Pakistan: Prices remain the highest in the region at roughly USD 620 per ton, but large LDT units remain scarce. Inflation increased to 5.4 percent and HKC approval work continues at Gadani. Turkey: The Turkish lira weakened to about TRY 41.7 as inflation crossed thirty-three percent. Local recyclers continue to face tight financing and limited tonnage availability heading into the fourth quarter. Market sentiment stayed weak through the start of October as declining fundamentals, currency pressure, and limited supply weighed on all major recycling destinations. Markets sold off after testing all time highs. The S&P has now set a "double top," and markets are now consolidating in a very narrow channel. Meanwhile, markets are doing well with a bullish trend still in place. However, there also remains a negative divergence with money flows going into the market are weakening, as well as a negative divergence in momentum and relative strength. Underneath the surface, there is some deterioration in the markets. Such are not immediate threats, but are a prelude to an eventual market correction. And with level of deviation, a price correction of between 3% and 5% at some point is not out of the question. About half of its land holdings are cattle ranchlands east of Orlando — where the the church has long-term plans to build the equivalent of a new city of 500,000 people. But voters in Orlando recently approved new rules meant to slow suburban sprawl on rural land. So the Mormon Church turned to Florida's Republican-controlled Legislature to step in. 'The Big Beautiful Bill') has raised eyebrows due to its implications for federal court contempt powers. The bill, which passed the House by a narrow margin, includes a provision that could severely limit federal courts' ability to enforce temporary restraining orders (TROs) & injunctions, in contrast to most new legislation it is written to be retroactive affecting previous rulings issued by federal courts. Specifically, the provision states that no court may use appropriated funds to enforce a contempt citation for failure to comply with an injunction or TRO if no security was provided when the order was issued. This change could have far-reaching consequences, particularly in immigration cases and other areas of law where TROs are commonly sought. Jack explains the mechanics of Federal Rule 65C, which requires parties seeking injunctions to provide a surety bond to cover potential damages if the injunction is later found to be wrongful. The discussion highlights the potential chaos that could ensue if existing injunctions without bonds become unenforceable, particularly in cases involving civil rights and government actions.We then shift focus to the use of pseudonyms in litigation, and the delicate balance between the public's right to access judicial proceedings and the need for individuals to protect their identities in sensitive cases. Our Chief Fixed Income Strategist Vishy Tirupattur explains why credit markets have held firm amid macro volatility, and the scenarios which could hurt its strong foundation.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I am Vishy Tirupattur, Morgan Stanley's Chief Fixed Income Strategist. Today, I will talk about why credit markets have been resilient even as other markets have been volatile – and market implications going forward. It's Tuesday, March 18th, at 11 am in New York. Market sentiment has shifted quickly from post-election euphoria and animal spirits to increasingly growing concern about downside risks to the U.S. economy, driven by ongoing policy uncertainty and a spate of uninspiring soft data. However, signaling from different markets has not been uniform. For example, after reaching an all-time high just a few weeks ago, the S&P 500 index has given up all of its gains since the election and then some. Treasury yields have also yo-yoed, from a 40-basis points selloff to a 60+ basis points rally. Yet in the middle of this volatility in equities and rates, credit markets have barely budged. In other words, credit has been a low beta asset class so far. This resilience which resonates with our long-standing constructive view on credit has strong underpinnings. We had expected that many of the supporting factors from 2024 would continue – such as solid credit fundamentals, strong investor demand driven by elevated overall yields rather than the level of spreads. While we expected the economic growth in 2025 to slow somewhat, to about 2 per cent, we thought that would still be a robust level for credit investors. These expectations have largely played out until recently. While we maintain our overall positive stance on credit, some of the factors contributing to its resilience are changing, calling the persistence of credit's low beta into question. While we did anticipate that sequencing and severity of policy would be key drivers of the economy and markets in 2025, growth constraining policies, especially tariffs, have come in faster and broader than what we had penciled in. Incorporating these policy signals, our U.S. economists have marked down real GDP growth to 1.5 per cent in 2025 and 1.2 per cent in 2026. From a credit perspective, we would highlight that our economists are not calling for a recession. Their growth expectations still leave us in territory we would deem credit friendly, although edging towards the bottom of our comfort zone. On the positive side of the ledger, cooling growth may also temper animal spirits and continue to constrain corporate debt supply, keeping market technicals supportive. Also, while treasury yields have rallied, overall yields are still at levels that sustain demand from yield-motivated buyers. That said, if growth concerns intensify from these levels, with weakness in soft data spreading notably to hard data, the probability of markets assigning above-average recession probabilities will increase. This could challenge credit's low beta, that has prevailed so far, and the credit beta could increase on further drawdowns in risk assets. Thanks for listening.
