It always lovely to welcome Montreal's Genevieve Racette back to the KKFI studios whenever she can make it to Kansas City; this visit was facilitated by Genevieve's attendance at the 2024 Folk Alliance International Conference. Please excuse some background construction noise that may be discernible while she and I are having our conversation…Both the street in front of the station and our building itself is under some serious reconstruction to accommodate a street car line extension and new tenants. As a woman in the music industry, Genevieve prioritizes surrounding herself with like-minded women-identifying individuals, taking pride in the fact over 80% of her team consists of woman-identifying musicians and industry members. She has showcased at prestigious music events such as Folk Alliance, Folk Music Ontario. Americanafest, Canadian Music Week and more. Her fourth record, “Golden” is set to be released this Fall. Next up in the Folk Alliance 2024 Takeover… Arizona's Remi Goode is a trained classical guitarist and choral singer turned alternative folk/pop singer-songwriter. When she first decided to put her voice and guitar together and write original music, she quickly developed a style that highlights her careful classical sensibilities, pure vocal quality, and the distinctive sound of a nylon-string guitar. With an affinity for small arrangements and modest production, Remi's highest priority is lyricism. She writes with blunt honesty and introspection, searching for the root of the dynamics within a relationship or a deeper understanding of her own self-conception. Although Remi's analysis of herself and others is often unforgiving, her songs always contain a qualifying aspect of emotional ambiguity—an expression of both grief and acceptance at having to navigate a world that isn't black or white. Enjoy these conversations and performances in Episode 1 of the Folk Alliance 2024 Take Over of the Tasty Brew Music Podcast.

Nationally renowned, Québécois folk-pop musician, Geneviève Racette, has captivated listeners with her gentle, yet compelling voice and has garnered impressive industry support for her folk-pop tracks ever since her first EP in 2014. Through her lyricism and ethereal vocals (which you will hear throughout this session), Geneviève has emerged as a rising star in both French and English-speaking Canadian music scenes. I was lucky enough to meet Genevieve early in 2022 and had her on the expanded 4 hour version of the Folk Alliance International Take Over of the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show on KKFI Radio. When she returned to Kansas City in late summer of 2022, I was only too happy to renew the acquaintance as I hosted my monthly episode of the Siren Song radio show. It was enlightening to discover both the differences and similarities of pursuing a lyrical life and surviving a global pandemic in Canada vis a vis the United States and to become familiar with an artist's educational background, collaborative and mentor experiences. Enjoy my conversation with the lovely Genevieve Racette. Photo Credit: Creator: ANNIE DIOTTE Copyright: 5146059015

After losing her job, Bobbie Racette was reminded how tough it is to find work as an Indigenous LGBTQ woman, so she decided to start creating jobs that could be done remotely, flexibly, and for a fair wage. When she started Virtual Gurus, a Calgary-based talent marketplace that matches companies with virtual assistants and freelancers, she made a point of hiring from marginalized groups including single mothers, trans people, Indigenous women and people with social anxiety. It took her 170 rejections before she got her first investor, but now capital is knocking at her door. This impact startup approach isn't just good for representation, it's been successful business strategy - and Bobbie is happy to share why.
In recent years, Didonato, Racette, and Upshaw have all released jazz albums, such as Songplay, Diva on Detour, and Winter Morning Walks. Sometimes we think that singers are either categorized as opera singers, or as singers of popular music, including jazz. However, these two genres are actually very closely linked together and share a lot of similarities. I’m your host, Stuart Holt, and on today’s episode of the Metropolitan Opera Guild podcast, lecturer Diedre Bird will discuss how aspects of jazz, such as improvisation, have also had a long-standing history in other forms of vocal music. This podcast also features Matt Herskowitz https://www.mattherskowitzpiano.com/

In this episode Leah and guest Calvin Racette explore stories of language loss and its impact on Métis Elders and community members. Elder Calvin teaches us about the historical factors that have led to the Michif language becoming endangered today. This episode talks about the Road Allowance experience and how racism and exclusion devalued Michif language retention and fluency. A former Executive Director of the Gabriel Dumont Institute, Calvin's early career was spent as a researcher/curriculum writer for the GDI in Regina. He has written multiple acclaimed books on Métis history and culture. And he has been involved in a number of important Metis history documentaries, including “ La Sawndr akwa Mawtoowin (Ashes to Tears),” the Green Lake story. If your world is Wichita, Kansas, the birthplace of Pizza Hut, White Castle and Kirstie Alley, there’s no more controversial building right now than Century II, a performing arts space built by John Hickman, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, that’s under siege from new development. Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center was built to commemorate Wichita’s 1970 centennial. Designed by architect John Hickman, the very Modernist Century II was built provide a large and attractive civic center with a Concert Hall, Convention Hall, Exhibition Hall, and later an expo hall and an attached Hyatt Regency. Our guest today is one of the best and hardest-working Modern preservationists in the country. With the mind of an auditor, the precision of a concert violinist, and the number-crunching of an MBA, because she is all three, Celeste Bogart Racette leads the movement to save Century II from the bulldozer. She has a personal connection to the building - as her father was Mayor at Wichita when it was built. Later on, a few minutes with Kyle Bergman on the upcoming Architecture and Design Festival, this year online.

Louis Racette was on a long journey before becoming a successful real estate investor. He wasn’t really good at school and actually hated attending to it due to his impatient and serious personality. He feels that he had a lot of challenges around him. After his high school education, he started off working for his dad’s company. His dad was in an insurance agency so he did a lot of investigation into accidents and claims. This kind of job taught him to think and ask questions for seeking a solution to a problem that will satisfy a claimant and the insurance company as well. This led him to become a more analytical thinker. He ended his job from the insurance company and was able to travel the world when he became a pilot. He decided to do something more such as broadcasting and went into actual communication. He was in sales for a CTV camera which taught him communications and marketing. Then after 12 years, he built his own company, an advertising agency, which served national and regional retail clients. The company’s objective was to offer creative solutions to clients. And after finishing his MBA degree he went back to Niagara and decided to do real estate there with the potential from not only being a realtor in helping people but becoming an investor as well - looking at the markets that changes the dynamics of marketing completely. Everything he learned from marketing when he engaged himself with real estate investment needs to be readapted to a new reality. That was the process from the moment he came into the real estate; learning about markets, data, finance, and property appraisal. What You Will Learn: Louis talks about one of the biggest ventures he did. How Louis talks about the best way to learn through early failures. Louis shares one of the easiest deals he ever made. Macroeconomics as a very important factor in dealing with market changes. A completely different tactic to address constantly changing market situations. Why Hamilton becomes the number one investment city in Canada. Why charging too low on people or prospective property buyers can bring you into trouble. How flexible are you looking for different types of opportunities to achieve great deals? Louis shares his contact information with people who might invest around the Toronto area.

Keri Latimer joins us on Episode 489 of Folk Roots Radio to talk about “Citizen Alien”, the second album from Leaf Rapids, the Winnipeg band she leads with her partner, Devin Latimer - and one of our favourite albums of 2019. Citizen Alien is a wonderful recording, and one that uses Keri and Devin's own family history to talk about the nature of identity and reflect on what it means to belong, in a world where more and more politicians are using populist nationalistic rhetoric to separate the ‘us’ from the ‘them’. It’s a really great in-depth interview - and definitely worth checking out. We can actually only share part of our conversation with you on this episode, but we’ll be bringing the full interview to the website and on demand listening very shortly. We wrap up the episode with more of Our Favourite Albums of 2019 and this time we hear from The MacQueens, Lizanne Knott, Geneviève Racette, Justin Rutledge, The Red River Ramblers, Leanne Hoffman, The East Pointers, Catherine MacLellan and Lee Harvey Osmond (Tom Wilson). Renee Racette, Ph.D., is an education professional with 13 years of experience with the St. Louis Public Schools. Starting as a chemistry teacher in 2005, she loved supporting students in learning about acid/base titrations and the periodic table. However, she realized she could make a greater impact in the lives of children outside of the classroom and began her school leadership journey. Spending time in both neighborhood (also known as comprehensive schools) and magnet schools, issues of equity and the unequal impacts of policy were highlighted in real time before her. This proved to be the spark behind her decision to complete a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. The desegregation plans in place in the St. Louis region have created a distinct system of separate and unequal schools that remains deeply entrenched in the status quo. As a school leader, she felt the limits of this system and recognized that it was going to require a different kind of advocacy to make the impact she desired. Dr. Racette is currently serving as a fellow at the Illinois State Board of Education where she works in the Center for Teaching and Learning. She is involved in a multitude of projects there including the Diverse Learner Ready Teacher initiative, the reauthorization of the state Perkins plan, the Equity Advisory Work Group, and supporting the Early Childhood Education Division in writing the FY20 ECE Block Grants.
Montreal's Geneviève Racette has just released a wonderful new album "No Water, No Flowers". A thoughtful and introspective folk-pop release, it's her first bilingual effort, and effortlessly moves back and forward between songs in English and French. The album has a bit of a concept feel to it, as it takes you through songs about life, death, grief, love and travel - almost as if it's exploring the 'circle of life'. Geneviève Racette joined us on Folk Roots Radio to chat about the new album. Music: Geneviève Racette “Les Lignes De Ma Main”, “Margo’s Song” and “Magnetic Love” from “No Water, No Flowers” (2019, Self) CDN.

Get my 5 Tips To Address Implicit Bias Within Ourselves and Others About Renee Racette, Ph.D. Show Highlights Advocacy as a principal Racette’s transition out of the principal role into educational policy initiatives Addressing educational policies Committee work and representation Racette’s local community work After the fellowship is complete Connect with Renee Twitter: @STL_educator LinkedIn: Renee Racette, Ph.D. rlacette@gmail.com Connect with me on Twitter @sheldoneakins www.sheldoneakins.com
