This episode opens with alarming news about Canada's food inflation reaching crisis levels. Charlebois reveals that Canada now has the highest food inflation rate among G7 countries, primarily driven by countervailing tariffs that have backfired on Canadian consumers. The hosts explain how Prime Minister Carney quietly eliminated most food-related tariffs on May 7th, though this decision received little public attention during the election. The discussion highlights how these tariffs made alternatives to American products more expensive, creating a perfect storm for Canadian grocery shoppers. The conversation shifts to emerging issues like "maple washing," where Charlebois shares specific examples of pricing discrepancies between products marketed as Canadian on the shelves versus imported products, urging grocers to exercise greater caution in their merchandising practices.A significant business development takes center stage as Quebec's Excel chicken processing cooperative faces a potential acquisition by Saputo subsidiary Sofina. This $6 billion deal could reshape Eastern Canada's supply chain under supply management systems, potentially leading to higher chicken prices and operational challenges. The interview segment features Dan Sullivan from Rosehall Run Vineyards, one of Prince Edward County's premier wine producers. Sullivan shares his 25-year journey transforming a 150-acre farm into one of Ontario's largest family-owned wineries in the region, producing 9,000-14,000 cases annually. He discusses how Prince Edward County evolved from a drive-through destination to a four-season wine tourism hotspot, emphasizing the region's focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals.Sullivan explains how social media marketing has revolutionized wine sales, moving away from traditional critic-driven recommendations toward peer influence and community building. He describes their dual distribution strategy, selling premium estate wines directly while maintaining LCBO presence with entry-level products that serve as consumer introductions to the brand. The episode explores recent Ontario government support for the wine industry, including Premier Doug Ford's $35 million funding commitment over five years. Sullivan expresses optimism about current market opportunities, particularly given recent trade disruptions that have created space for Ontario wines on retail shelves. We also discuss innovative celebrity food collaborations, highlighting Selena Gomez's partnership with Oreo to create a horchata-flavored cookie. They note Gomez's remarkable success as one of the youngest self-made billionaires at 32, worth $1.3 billion, mainly through her Rare Beauty brand and strategic collaborations. The discussion extends to other celebrity food ventures, including Ryan Reynolds' successful breakfast collaboration with Tim Hortons, which generated impressive lineups and sales. These segments underscore broader themes of food security, consumer choice, and the complex interplay between government policy and market dynamics affecting Canadian food producers and consumers.Premier Doug Ford photo credit: Photo by Ernest Doroszuk /Toronto Sun The Food Professor #podcast is presented by Caddle. There are more comparisons with what Trump and Musk are trying to do now with their war on DEI than you would expect. The problem is they are trying to expand what happened in Prince Edward County to more than just education and also take it nationwide. To finish we hear Sam Cooke's plea for change.

The Sipster's Wine Podcast

Text us your wine questions, craziest wine experiences, or if you just have a comment for us. . This week's guest is Anne Du Bois who own Savon Du Bois in Picton, Prince Edward County, Ontario. I've always wanted to do an episode like this because it is not directly about wine but rather, about aromas almost exclusively. Anne Du Bois is an aromatherapist and perfumer who extracts her own scents and essential elements from botanicals to create a huge array of products from perfumes, essential oils, soaps, lotions, and salts, which is only a small amount of the things that Anne offers in her store. She oversees the production of all of it personally and is passionate about how aromas, and the ingredients that go into producing them, can impact our lives and our health.  I have been to the County many times in the past few years and only noticed her store on Main Street this past November on my last visit. I was walking down the street when suddenly I smelled the most amazing things walking past the door to one of the shops. Walking into her store is like immersing yourself in beauty. I probably spent about a half hour there just smelling everything I could as well as reading the stories on some of the packaging, part of some amazing marketing that she's created on the packaging of her carefully crafted scented products. Thankfully, Anne had time to meet me the next morning - the last morning that I was going to be in Picton - to record this conversation.Visit Savon Du Bois online at savondubois.com. Welcome to the Sipsters Podcast! Episode 199 Details Epic Struggle: Kayak Angler's 11-Mile Battle and Poacher's 24-Year Hunting Ban   Latest News: Outdoors & Western Living Marlin Tows Across Ocean Kayak Angler  Listen to this story - How far would you go?? In early August, California fisherman Kei Vang embarked on a fishing trip with two friends, targeting tuna off the coast of California. They were about six miles out when Vang hooked a massive striped marlin, leading to a dramatic five-hour battle.  The marlin towed Vang's 12-foot kayak approximately 11 miles over 5 hours time across the Pacific Ocean before the striped marlin began to tire, beginning to circle underneath the kayak. It was then the angler was able to grab the leader and finally able to get a good look at the billfish which was longer than his kayak, having him believe it to be 13 feet long and estimated to weigh around 200 pounds. He then managed to cut the line and release the fish. An Epic Struggle! Vang and his friends had to use GPS units mounted on their kayaks to map the distance the striped marlin had taken them, which totaled about 20 miles from shore. They were carrying extra batteries along with VHF radios and other safety gear. As night fell, realizing it would take hours to paddle back, they called a friend with a power boat who rescued them and towed their kayaks back. Vang said every kayak angler's dream is to catch a big fish and have a photo made of it holding it up next to their kayak… That wasn't possible with his Striped Marlin, who didn't get a photo with the marlin, considered having a replica mount made instead. FACEBOOK AIDES IN CATCHING POACHER In December 2023, photos of a famous nontypical Virginia buck, known as the "Hollywood Buck," posted on Facebook led to accusations against Virginia resident Jason Walters for poaching. Walters, who initially claimed to have killed the deer in Prince Edward County, was identified as having illegally hunted the buck and two other whitetails from Richmond, Virginia. Following a thorough investigation by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), Walters pled guilty to 20 wildlife violations. He was sentenced to six months in jail (with three months suspended), fined $2,500, and ordered to pay $11,000 in restitution. His hunting privileges were revoked for 100 years, but with 76 years suspended, leaving an effective ban of 24 years. Walters' accomplice was also found guilty and received a $1,250 fine, 30 days of house arrest, and a six-year suspension of his hunting privileges. The DWR emphasized that these penalties are among the harshest ever imposed and aim to deter future wildlife crimes. Investigations revealed that Walters had previously posted photos of the Hollywood Buck and other deer on Facebook, which were linked to the poaching incident. This case highlights the critical role of social media in wildlife law enforcement. Bison, Buffalo The Rut Is On  For those heading to ANY United States park with Buffalo, Bison… Take this as "You've been warned"… The Yellowstone National Park rangers have a statement for everyone: The bison rut is in full swing. You may see mature males with their mouth open, tongue out and upper lips pulled back. This is how bull bison sniff pheromones and determine whether a female is ready to breed. Bulls will also display their dominance by bellowing, wallowing, and engaging in fights with other bulls. The winners earn the right to mate with receptive females. Bison are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans. Use extra caution and give them additional space during this time. So let us add this, we hit on the topic last week; Please DO NOT become a Touron… A Tourist that is a Moron. A Touron. Don't Be That Guy. This week I finally make it to The County! I am joined by both Sherry Karlo and Saxe Brickenden of Karlo Estates. We talk specifically about P.E.C.'s different varietals and the way The County brings in customers. Plus:I want your wines! In the past, many of you may know I ran an awards and annual report for the Sommelier group S.O.S.A. Well, this fall I'm going about things a little differently. I'm not sure that anyone needs another wine competition, nor all the entry fees that this can lead to. What I'm doing this year is a list of “25 Top Wines of the Year” (the list will be larger in the future but the 25 top entries will be highlighted this year). I know 2020 was a pretty great vintage and after a few consistent years (without having to think of 2022's outcome) it would be great to have entries only from current releases, but I will be open this year to “dealer's choice”.  So far, what I've been doing is growing my audience (and thank you for listening by the way) in anticipation for what will be an annual “best of” list, highlighting chosen wines to round out the “the seven” chosen varietals plus that I'll be looking into. The difference with what I'll be doing this year – what I have not done yet – is promoting specific wines and the wineries from which they hail.  For all 25 wines and wineries chosen:- I will be doing in-depth podcast episodes with each of you, twice throughout the year- the wines chosen later this fall will appear and stay on my website (soon TBA) for the year. - plus promotion tied to your winery for the year you appear on the review.I will not be asking for any entry fees, as this is a waste of good money for those who really can't afford to be entering every single possible promotional venue out there – only to be left out of the list of winners. And also, to be completely transparent, I will be choosing from submissions – not paid submissions. The varietals to be considered this year are:- Chardonnay- Riesling- Cabernet Franc- Gamay- Pinot Noir- Vidal- Baco Noir as well as a general “Sparkling” category. What I'm hoping we can achieve is more of a personal story about all of you and the incredible wines you create. I know this is a "hand sell" and word of mouth business (until things can open up a little more for what we thought we had in the first place, “free enterprise” but that's another story to be continued) but what I'm going to be doing, is what other wine writers have been doing for you day in and day out – only you and I will be talking together so everyone can hear from the winemakers themselves, what went into creating the great wines Ontario has to offer. I will be ensuring that this podcast carries on all year – even when you are all taking a well-deserved vacation at the end of this year or beginning of the next. I firmly believe that continuing the discussion about Ontario wines week in and week out is the key to forcing that door open a little more each week and bringing your message to the people of Ontario and far beyond – but I'd really like to turn all those Toronto folks into mass consumers! If you'd like to send me your wines for consideration (you can enter as many categories as you wish) just respond to this email or you can message me @rockandgrapes on Instagram and we can hammer out all the logistical details to get your wines to my front door. Please remember that I am happy to receive all the wines you wish to submit and they will all be reviewed within their chosen categories. After I have worked my way through them, the chosen wineries will be contacted and we will discuss the coming year's events. I'm very excited and hopeful about what we are doing together.

Sleiman Al Jasem took over the “County Catch” fish processing business from local Prince Edward County fishers in 2021 after arriving in Canada from Syria as a refugee. His focus is purchasing, processing and selling locally caught Whitefish, yellow and White Perch, and Pickerel harvested from the Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario surrounding Prince Edward County. Demand is never an issue, it's the lack of a regular supply that concerns Sleiman. Most of the fish caught in the area are transported whole to a processing plant near Lake Erie where they are processed and exported to markets like China. Sleiman is our guest on the Blue Fish Radio Show where we caught up to him at the Pickton local market.

“We would convince our girlfriends to come down on the weekend, drink some wine with us and learn how to wallpaper all the rooms. Our families and our friends really stepped up and it felt like everyone was really pitching in to help us transform this property. Looking back now, this was such a time of our lives.” To close out our second season as we celebrate the beautiful turning of Spring into Summer, we're in bright company with April Brown & Sarah Sklash, two best friends who share a love for discovering new travel destinations, good wine and creative design, all of which they passionately bring to life as co-founders and owners of The June Motel in Ontario, Canada.  Seven years ago they quit their jobs in Toronto and jumped head first into the world of motels, rolling up their sleeves to renovate a dingy roadside motel and reimagine it as the boutique motel brand it is today. A beautiful space where people can come together with their people and enjoy the good life's simple pleasures for a few days. In this episode, April and Sarah share their story behind their now two motels in Prince Edward County and Sauble Beach, and what to expect soon from a third. While it's not all pretty in pink, it certainly calls for a toast to their perfect blend of naiveté and tenacity, as these ladies know there is always a reason to celebrate with a little bubbly. Top Takeaways [1:40] How 20 years of friendship can evolve from being sorority sisters to city living corporate career women, and how a few girls' trips abroad can inspire this new business brainstorm.  [5:00] What started as a search for a location to host a women's wine retreat quickly turned into the purchase of a dingy roadside hunting and fishing motel with a small budget yet big dreams for what it could become.  [12:50] If “June” were a person…April and Sarah have imagined her to be a young woman from the 60's…fun, trendy, retro, bold, eclectic and confident. [17:20] Shortly after opening one motel, they got the itch to do it again, this time with a whole new set of challenges to tackle along the way and the added pressure of a camera crew filming every move for their Netflix Series, “Motel Makeover.”  [24:45] What makes the Prince Edward County location perfectly positioned for culinary and wine country excursions and how the Sauble Beach location evokes a nostalgic beach town vacation.  [27:10] From buttery lobster rolls to morning yoga in the garden, from a glass of wine around a bonfire to sunset live music on the poolside patio, there's much to “eat, sip and play” at The June.   [33:00] A hint at what is to come as Sarah and April seek out a third location to build upon their vacation experiences for their guests. Sometimes it is hard to put into words what that even means or looks like, and there are a plethora of variables that impact one's unique style. Passionate about the interconnection between food, agriculture, tourism, arts, and culture, Rebecca has been instrumental in developing tourism products, including Prince Edward County's award-winning Taste Trail & Arts Trail and the Culinary Tourism Alliance's Feast On® certification program. In her role at the Culinary Tourism Alliance (CTA), Rebecca manages highly participatory and asset-based community development projects at the local, regional, provincial, and national levels. She oversees programming, partnership development and develops comprehensive marketing partnerships to increase awareness of Canada's food tourism experiences. Rebecca contributes her expertise to a variety of industry boards, including the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO) and the United Nations World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO) Sustainable Development Goals Working Group. She has written the curriculum for Centennial Colleges Food Tourism Post Graduate Program, contributed chapters to the 2nd UNWTO Global Report on Gastronomic Tourism, and produced a chapter on Transforming the Terroir into a Tourist Destination to the Routledge Handbook of Gastronomic Tourism (release date of fall 2019). Rebecca completed a Master of Arts in Global Leadership at Royal Roads University in 2021 with a specific interest in sustainable tourism. She is a part-time professor at George Brown College in their Food Tourism Entrepreneurship program. Born and raised in Toronto, Rebecca spent her summers in rural Prince Edward County. In her grade 12 year, she sailed with West Island Colleges Class Afloat on a 156-foot-tall ship to 20 countries in Europe and Africa – an experience that rooted her passion for travel, adventure, and taste of place! Rebecca continues to split her time between Toronto (week) and Prince Edward County (weekends), sharing her adventures with her husband, two teenage sons, and silver labrador Blueberry. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Rebecca Mackenzie, the President and CEO of Culinary Tourism Alliance. In this enlightening conversation, Rebecca provides insightful definitions for culinary tourism and agri-tourism and shares her expertise on building partnerships and programs that are sustainable and beneficial for all involved. What You Will Learn in this Episode: How destinations can leverage culinary and agritourism to stand out by defining their unique selling proposition and sharing their stories Why successful culinary and agri-tourism programs are grassroots-driven, and DMOs should understand and own their particular taste of place to collaborate and showcase it to visitors What culinary tourism is and how it reflects the history, heritage, and culture of a place How marketing organizations can create a curated culinary tourism experience How the Maple in the County event encouraged collaboration, bringing together five maple syrup producers under one brand and encouraging local businesses to create maple-themed products and experiences Rebecca shares her insights and best practices for initiating and developing partnerships The World of Culinary Tourism In this episode, Rebecca Mackenzie, the President and CEO of Culinary Tourism Alliance, dives deep into the world of culinary and agri-tourism. Mackenzie shares her insights on how destinations can truly stand out by defining their unique selling proposition and sharing the stories of the people who grow, raise and craft their tastes of place. As Mackenzie explains, the reality is that no two ingredients are quite the same, and the way they are processed or celebrated reflects the culture of that place. Successful culinary and agri-tourism programs are grassroots-driven, and business operators must fully understand and own their unique taste of place to collaborate and showcase it to visitors. By executing excellent multi-sensory experiences, destinations can leave lifelong impressions with visitors, ultimately keeping them competitive in a rapidly growing industry. So tune in to learn more about how to make your culinary and agri-tourism program outstanding in your field. History, Heritage, and Culture Rebecca explains that culinary tourism includes any travel experience where a person can learn about and consume food and drink that reflects a place's history, heritage, and culture. While agritourism is primarily focused on the production side of food and beverage, culinary tourism goes a step further by providing visitors with an opportunity to taste the products grown and raised in the area. This immersive experience allows visitors to understand the nuances of grape growing, production processes, and the people involved in the destination. From visiting farmers' markets and specialty food retailers to attending cooking schools and festivals, there are numerous ways to experience the taste of the place. Maple in the County We also discuss the development of the Maple in the County event over 20 years ago in Prince Edward County, Canada. The event brought together five maple syrup producers under one brand, encouraging local businesses to create maple-themed products and experiences. The first year saw almost 100 businesses participate, leading to increased tourism and visitors spending longer in the area. Welcome to February 11th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate amazing inventors and snappy patties. James West was born in 1931 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. As a boy, he loved taking things apart and after an accident involving a radio, he discovered a curiosity for electricity. This led West to obtaining a degree in physics and a position with Bell Laboratories as an inventor. By 1968 his inexpensive, highly sensitive compact microphone was in mass production and the technology is still used in 90 percent of today's microphones as well as telephones and tape recorders. James West was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame in 1999 and today holds over 250 patents for his inventions. He is 91 years old and is currently a professor at Johns Hopkins University. On National Inventors' Day we celebrate the men and women who continue to inspire us with their amazing achievements.  The flavor combination of chocolate and mint has been around awhile. As early as 1840, the Quiggins brothers created a soft mint cake dipped in chocolate. And while the UK based Kendal Mint Cake Company still produces them today, the peppermint patties we love to celebrate got their start in America in 1940. At the York Cone factory inventor Henry Kessler had only one rule; the candy had to pass the snap test. If it didn't snap in two the patties were out! It's estimated that over 1.5 billion are produced each year, proving that this candy is still a fan favorite! On National Peppermint Patty Day celebrate the candy that kids still find cool.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day!
