Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with Elliot James Reay.Elliot James Reay has a genuine, lifelong love for not just the music of the '50s but the entire era, and he has the voice, look, and magnetism to seemingly transport his fans back in time. But a close listen to his intoxicating forays into doo-wop and rockabilly reveals decade-hopping flourishes, knowing nods, and the occasional bent melody or distorted peel of guitar that would've caused uproar in Billy Fury's day. Reay grew up listening to all kinds of music in the town of Bury, outside of Manchester, but he was drawn to the old stuff from an early age and took it farther than most, thrifting for vintage clothes and busking the town center as a teen. Reay's debut single, “I Think They Call This Love,” scored over 10 million views before its full July release and over 10 million plays in its first month on streaming services, not to mention hitting Spotify's Viral charts in over 27 countries while reaching #14 on the Global Viral 50. We had the pleasure of interviewing Elliot James Reay over Zoom video!23-year-old singer, guitarist, and songwriter Elliot James Reay returns with the irrepressibly upbeat new single, “Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin.” The soulful cut is built on an old school premise: Reay's partner fears he's been unfaithful when really he was just out dancing the night away. The song's music video brings that scenario to life and pays homage to the Northern Soul dancing scene still thriving in Reay's hometown of Manchester, UK. “Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin” is available now at via Interscope / Island EMI.For his fourth song to date, Reay reunites with writer-producer duo SOAP (Manchester's Josh Noble and Karl Ziegler) alongside fellow cowriters Annielle Lisiuk and Glen Roberts. With deep bass groove, sharp guitar stabs, jangling tambourine, and driving drums, “Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin” is itself a powerful enticement to dance. Horns and strings only add to the urgency as Reay growls, quavers, and coos out his passion for movement: “It's a shame she doesn't get it, a shame she doesn't see / It don't make me a traitor and it don't make me cheat / You can try to stop the music, but you can't stop my feet / Just give me a bourbon, a bass line, and a beat.”The music video for “Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin” finds Reay in the hot seat after he comes home late. He's suited up and visibly disheveled as a nightgown-wearing woman gives him a piece of her mind. Through thrilling flashbacks, though, we see the truth as Reay cuts a rug amidst a group of passionate dancers kicking, spinning, and shuffling in a red-curtained club.Reay's new tune further leans into the young artist's loving embrace of '50s and '60s music, and follows March's “Daydreaming,” a swooning single infused with cinematic grandeur and eerie longing. Before that came the upbeat and stylish “Boy in Love,” with a video shot on the streets of his hometown, and the massive breakthrough “I Think They Call This Love,” which enthralled millions around the globe with Reay's refreshing revival of a classic rock 'n' roll sound.Influenced from an early age by artists like Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley, Reay now channels that pioneering era of culture into his music to incredible effect. A truly sensational debut, “I Think They Call This Love” has amassed over 150 million global streams, earned 400 million views across 120,000+ TikTok creates, climbed Spotify Viral Charts in over 27 countries, and helped Reay build a loyal fanbase of more than 5 million followers. The song also marked the arrival of a fascinating new talent who, clearly, has much more to share.ABOUT ELLIOT JAMES REAY:Elliot James Reay has a genuine, lifelong love for not just the music of the '50s but the entire era and he has the voice, look, and magnetism to seemingly transport his fans back in time. But a close listen to his intoxicating forays into doo-wop and rockabilly reveals decade-hopping flourishes, knowing nods, and the occasional bent melody or distorted peel of guitar that would've caused uproar in Billy Fury's Day. Instead — and despite those who told him he'd need to change his sound to succeed — Elliot's grown a huge fan base via modern means, organically amassing over 4.7 million followers and hundreds of millions of views across social media platforms.Reay grew up listening to all kinds of music in the town of Bury, outside of Manchester, but he was drawn to the old stuff from an early age and took it farther than most, thrifting for vintage clothes and busking the town center as a teen. As the crowds grew, so did his confidence, and after earning more than £2,000 in a single day fundraising in the wake of the 2017 Manchester tragedy, Elliot realized the power he had to reach others. He was only 15 years old back then, and ever since he's been working on bringing his velveteen voice to an expanding audience whose appreciation for his music transcends generations, time zones and, yes — to see his fans' comments about his work — quite possibly time itself. We want to hear from you! Three researchers with personal experience of anxiety and depression triggered by studying the environmental destruction caused by a changing climate describe the steps they take to protect their mental health.Ruth Cerezo-Mota, a climate scientist based at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City, found herself grieving for the state of the planet through her work for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.Experiencing a panic attack at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a fear of checking emails and a sense of disengagement from work, led to her seeking professional help. “I was in a really dark place,” she tells Adam Levy. Retreating to a “happy place” that combines home, books, yoga, running, cats and wine is a key copying strategy when things get tough, she says.Similar experiences are recounted by Dave Reay, a climate scientist at the University of Edinburgh UK, and Daniel Gilford, a meteorologist who works at Climate Central, a science-led non-profit based in Princeton, New Jersey, that researches and reports the facts about climate change and its effects on peoples lives.Talking to other climate researchers and focusing on positive developments around climate change also helps, says Reay. Gilford, who is based in Orlando, Florida, likens climate change to being in the path of an approaching train: “I can see it coming with all of its weight and heaviness, and I'm screaming ‘Stop. Stop the train. Stop the train.'“By screaming, by saying what is happening, by naming the problem and telling people about it, I think that that can become a solution as well,” he says. Nick shares his top tips and techniques for using three key lure types: metals, soft plastics, and suspending jerkbaits. Metals: Nick explains how to effectively use metal lures, emphasizing the importance of varying depths and retrieval speeds.  Soft Plastics: Discover the versatility of soft plastics as Nick discusses casting into shallow waters during low light conditions and retrieving slowly to mimic natural prey. He touches on the use of a "donkey rig" for added effectiveness. Suspending Jerkbaits: Perfect for colder water or less active fish, suspending jerkbaits require a slow retrieve with pauses to imitate injured baitfish.  Seasonal factors and weather conditions play a crucial role in trout behavior, and Nick emphasizes adapting your techniques based on these variables. He also shares insights into the best tackle and gear. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a beginner, this episode is packed with valuable information to help you succeed in Lake Eucumbene. Tonight, on Trackside with Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin, they talk about Conor Daly and Ryan Hunter-Reay signing to DRR and recap the Kyle Larson test. They talk about how important it is to have Kyle Larson competing in the Indianapolis 500 this year. Kevin discusses the success of crossover drivers from NASCAR in the past, including Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart, and John Andretti. They talked about the financial status of DRR, and the likelihood of the team going full time soon. Curt talks about the possibility of RC Enerson and Abel Motorsports competing at the 500 also.  Later in the first hour of the show, Kevin talks about a controversial topic, a charter system. Kevin explains that owners in other sports can cash out, something that does not exist in IndyCar under the current Leader Circle system. Kevin explains that that is the business of the sport, and how this could lead to guaranteed spots at the IMS. Curt lists some of the most surprising DNQs at IMS, and the importance of a team making the race.  Kevin rounds out the first hour previewing the second hour.   In the second hour of the show, Kevin talks about a new face that will be working for Ganassi next season in the position of lead engineer. Curt talks about a conversation he had with Will Power and how the hybrid engine is coming along, and how far they've come since the earlier tests. Power says that the hybrid engine will not take much adjustment. Kevin brings up F1's rejection of Andretti's team, and how harsh their rejection was. The main reason comes down to not wanting to split the money 11 ways.  During the second hour, Kevin reviews some tweets, and answers questions regarding the charter system. He also talks about some of the drivers he is most excited to see.  Kevin ends the show talking to Jackson Lee about what it's like racing at Daytona on the road course.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Drawing across Games Studies, Childhood Studies, and Children's Literature Studies, Emma Reay's book The Child in Videogames: From the Meek, to the Mighty, to the Monstrous (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) redirects critical conversations away from questions of whether videogames are ‘good' or ‘bad' for child-players and towards questions of how videogames produce childhood as a set of social roles and rules in contemporary Western contexts.  It does so by cataloguing and critiquing representations of childhood across a corpus of over 500 contemporary videogames. While child-players are frequently the topic of academic debate – particularly within the fields of psychology, behavioural science, and education research - child-characters in videogames are all but invisible. This book's aim is to make these child-characters not only visible, but legible, and to demonstrate that coded kids in virtual worlds can shed light on how and why the boundaries between adults and children are shifting. From the 1930s to the 1970s, in New York and in Paris, daring publishers and writers were producing banned pornographic literature. The books were written by young, impecunious writers, poets, and artists, many anonymously. Most of these pornographers wrote to survive, but some also relished the freedom to experiment that anonymity provided - men writing as women, and women writing as men - and some (Anaïs Nin, Henry Miller) went on to become influential figures in modernist literature. Barry Reay and Nina Attwood's Dirty Books: Erotic Fiction and the Avant-garde in Mid-century Paris and New York (Manchester UP, 2023) tells the stories of these authors and their remarkable publishers: Jack Kahane of Obelisk Press and his son Maurice Girodias of Olympia Press, whose catalogue and repertoire anticipated that of the more famous US publisher Grove Press. What did the buffalo say to his son when he left for college… Kara's been galivanting around the country delivering keynotes and Kim has been…editing. It's fine. They're fine. Discussion of the TikTok hearings and positive impacts the app has had on Kim and Kara's lives kick off this episode before Catie Reay joins the conversation.  Don't mind the pitter patter of little feet, and what one child would later describe as "a very big picture" falling down in the background. It's all in a happily chaotic day's work for Catie Reay. Catie is a mother of four from Wyoming and in all of her tons of spare time, is also fielding an internet worth of advocacy. She joins Kim and Kara to share her harrowing tale of surviving a religious cult, enduring years of abuse, and healing her own inner child. Unabashedly taking social media platforms and the U.S. government to task, Catie is leading the way for followers to get involved in legislation benefitting survivors, especially children. She is going places, and she's taking all of us along with her.  Catie is a CSA survivor and advocate to the sexually exploited and human trafficked.  She uses her social media to educate, elevate survivor stories and uses public pressure to invoke change.  Learn more from Catie: Website: https://linktr.ee/catiereay Instagram: @thetiktokadvocate TikTok: @thetiktokadvocate Catie's CTA: Parents--check out BARK to help monitor and protect your children online Learn more about the Earn it act which requires social media platforms be held accountable for CSAM on their platforms (revision to section 230 making it possible to sue a social media platform) Learn about CSOA-Child Safety Online Act  _________ Join Kim and Kara's "Captive Audience" by visiting  https://www.patreon.com/SGTC.  Members gain access to full-length video episodes of weekly podcast, Q&A live streams, discounts on merch, exclusive content, and swag--all interspersed with our signature compassion and a touch of dark humor. Join our Miami Trauma team including Drs. Urréchaga, Neeman, and Rattan as they dive into the literature regarding a topic that has become all too common to the US news cycle- gun violence. They will go over a recent paper from JAMA and include other important literature while trying to understand this complex problem that has been grappling US public policy.  Quick Hits: 1.     Firearm injury is the leading cause death in the US among ages 1-19 2.     For every person killed violently by someone else with a firearm, there are 3 survivors.  3.     Gun ownership triples the risk of homicide 4.     Permit laws and preventing people convicted of a violent crime from owning a firearm decrease firearm-related death and have a positive ripple effect even outside state borders. In short, for effective reductions of firearm-related injury and death, federal legislation will be more effective than state-by-state References 1.     Liu, Y, Siegel, M, Sen, B.
