We had the pleasure of interviewing Elliot James Reay over Zoom video!23-year-old singer, guitarist, and songwriter Elliot James Reay returns with the irrepressibly upbeat new single, “Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin.” The soulful cut is built on an old school premise: Reay's partner fears he's been unfaithful when really he was just out dancing the night away. The song's music video brings that scenario to life and pays homage to the Northern Soul dancing scene still thriving in Reay's hometown of Manchester, UK. “Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin” is available now at via Interscope / Island EMI.For his fourth song to date, Reay reunites with writer-producer duo SOAP (Manchester's Josh Noble and Karl Ziegler) alongside fellow cowriters Annielle Lisiuk and Glen Roberts. With deep bass groove, sharp guitar stabs, jangling tambourine, and driving drums, “Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin” is itself a powerful enticement to dance. Three researchers with personal experience of anxiety and depression triggered by studying the environmental destruction caused by a changing climate describe the steps they take to protect their mental health.Ruth Cerezo-Mota, a climate scientist based at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City, found herself grieving for the state of the planet through her work for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.Experiencing a panic attack at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a fear of checking emails and a sense of disengagement from work, led to her seeking professional help. “I was in a really dark place,” she tells Adam Levy. Retreating to a “happy place” that combines home, books, yoga, running, cats and wine is a key copying strategy when things get tough, she says.Similar experiences are recounted by Dave Reay, a climate scientist at the University of Edinburgh UK, and Daniel Gilford, a meteorologist who works at Climate Central, a science-led non-profit based in Princeton, New Jersey, that researches and reports the facts about climate change and its effects on peoples lives.Talking to other climate researchers and focusing on positive developments around climate change also helps, says Reay. Gilford, who is based in Orlando, Florida, likens climate change to being in the path of an approaching train: “I can see it coming with all of its weight and heaviness, and I'm screaming ‘Stop. Stop the train. Stop the train.'“By screaming, by saying what is happening, by naming the problem and telling people about it, I think that that can become a solution as well,” he says. Tonight, on Trackside with Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin, they talk about Conor Daly and Ryan Hunter-Reay signing to DRR and recap the Kyle Larson test. They talk about how important it is to have Kyle Larson competing in the Indianapolis 500 this year. Kevin discusses the success of crossover drivers from NASCAR in the past, including Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart, and John Andretti. They talked about the financial status of DRR, and the likelihood of the team going full time soon. Curt talks about the possibility of RC Enerson and Abel Motorsports competing at the 500 also. Later in the first hour of the show, Kevin talks about a controversial topic, a charter system. Kevin explains that owners in other sports can cash out, something that does not exist in IndyCar under the current Leader Circle system. Kevin explains that that is the business of the sport, and how this could lead to guaranteed spots at the IMS. Curt lists some of the most surprising DNQs at IMS, and the importance of a team making the race. Kevin rounds out the first hour previewing the second hour. In the second hour of the show, Kevin talks about a new face that will be working for Ganassi next season in the position of lead engineer. Curt talks about a conversation he had with Will Power and how the hybrid engine is coming along, and how far they've come since the earlier tests. Power says that the hybrid engine will not take much adjustment. Kevin brings up F1's rejection of Andretti's team, and how harsh their rejection was. The main reason comes down to not wanting to split the money 11 ways. During the second hour, Kevin reviews some tweets, and answers questions regarding the charter system. Drawing across Games Studies, Childhood Studies, and Children's Literature Studies, Emma Reay's book The Child in Videogames: From the Meek, to the Mighty, to the Monstrous (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) redirects critical conversations away from questions of whether videogames are ‘good' or ‘bad' for child-players and towards questions of how videogames produce childhood as a set of social roles and rules in contemporary Western contexts. It does so by cataloguing and critiquing representations of childhood across a corpus of over 500 contemporary videogames. While child-players are frequently the topic of academic debate – particularly within the fields of psychology, behavioural science, and education research - child-characters in videogames are all but invisible. This book's aim is to make these child-characters not only visible, but legible, and to demonstrate that coded kids in virtual worlds can shed light on how and why the boundaries between adults and children are shifting. Have a listen for about 15 seconds to the following mystery sounds, and see if you know what's making the croaks. And here's a hint: what would you get if you combined a male hoofed mammal with a jumping amphibian? SOUNDS - ~16 sec If you guessed a bullfrog, you're right! You heard calls of the American Bullfrog, the largest native frog in North America, with a length typically of 4 to 6 inches and sometimes as much as 8 inches. This large size helps account for the males' deep mating call, often described as “jug-o-rum” and audible over considerable distances. Bullfrogs are found all over Virginia in ponds, lakes, and still-water sections of streams. These kinds of permanent water bodies with shallow water and vegetation are needed for mating, for the laying of thousands of eggs in sheets on the water surface, and for the tadpoles' development period of one to two years. Bullfrog tadpoles feed mostly on algae, aquatic plants, and insects or other invertebrates, while adults feed on insects, crayfish, other frogs, snakes, small mammals, and—according to one source—“anything that is moving and that they can at least partially swallow”. In turn, bullfrogs are prey for various wildlife species and in some states are a game species for humans. The American Bullfrog's native range is from the East Coast to the Great Plains. Some of these native populations have declined due to habitat loss, water pollution, and pesticides, while the species' range has expanded through introductions into several western states. Lengths range from 85-200mm (3.5-6 in). ...Males are generally smaller than females, have a yellowish wash on their throat, and a larger tympanum [eardrum], thumb, and forearm. The male breeding call is a deep, full series of notes best described as “jug-a-rum.”... Reproduction This species breeds from the late spring to early fall. Males are territorial. Mating success is influenced by the quality of the territory. ... Females lay one or two clutches per season. Average clutch size is 12,000 eggs. Clutches are laid in a film on the water surface. Whilst the push for better representation for women and people of colour has become more mainstream, the disabled community are yet to be included to the same degree. This matters hugely when it comes to cinema because of its long-standing problematic history when representing disability. From failing to cast disabled actors, to entrenched tropes where disability denotes evil or societal outsiders to be avoided, we've been drip-fed many taken-for-granted representations that need significant revision. After reading journalist and author Cathy Reay's recent review of the film Champions, which features a supporting cast of learning disabled actors, I was keen to chat with her and hear firsthand the many ways non-disabled critics and filmmakers are failing the disabled community. This is a follow-up to a similar episode from February 2018. SOUND - ~6 secThat sound of a mid-February rainfall in Blacksburg, Va., opens an episode on creatures who show up, sound off, and pair up every year, starting in mid- to late winter, in temporary pools and other water bodies. Have a listen for about 50 seconds to a series of mystery sounds, and see if you can guess what animals are making this variety of peeps, clicks, clucks, and honks. And here's a hint: the first warm rains of each year jump-start these creatures.SOUNDS - ~52 sec If you guessed frogs and toads, you're right! Those were the calls of the following nine frog or toad species: Little Grass Frog; Upland Chorus Frog; Southern Chorus Frog; Coastal Plains Leopard Frog; Green Treefrog; Squirrel Treefrog; Oak Toad; Pine Woods Treefrog; and Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad. These nine are part of Virginia's 28 native species of frogs and toads. Starting as early as January for some species—like the Little Grass Frog—frogs and toads move from overwintering habitats to temporary pools, ponds, streams, marshes, or other wet areas, where males use distinctive calls to attract females for breeding. As spring arrives and progresses into summer, Virginia's aquatic areas attract a procession of species with different breeding and calling periods. They will go over a recent paper from JAMA and include other important literature while trying to understand this complex problem that has been grappling US public policy. Quick Hits: 1. Firearm injury is the leading cause death in the US among ages 1-19 2. For every person killed violently by someone else with a firearm, there are 3 survivors. 3. Gun ownership triples the risk of homicide 4. Permit laws and preventing people convicted of a violent crime from owning a firearm decrease firearm-related death and have a positive ripple effect even outside state borders.
