Send us a Text Message.Waaay back in August of 2018 I was attending a Livingston Taylor songwriting and performing retreat at Boston University. We spent the day working on our songs and performance with Liv, Vance Gilbert and Melissa Ferrick. After dinner we all got our instruments and had an informal song swap in the main meeting room. This was kind of a round robin sort of thing where each of us would play a song and then the next person would play and so on. There was one guy who had been pretty quiet during the workshop, a little standoffish if I'm to be honest. So, I was pretty astonished when it came his turn to play. He pulled out his Martin and sang a great song, well performed. That person is Tod Pronto. I was impressed with Tod and started following his progress as he opened for Liv and Jonathan Edwards and other folk greats. Then, I found his Sunday morning 9am streaming show, Coffee with Tod on YouTube or on Facebook. Then, I found out that he also has a regular cartoon, Midlife Thesis, that is published every week. I mean, what can't he do? I'm Tim Rose and this is the Tim Tunes podcast. In this episode we'll interview dear friend and accomplished singer/songwriter/cartoonist Tod Pronto and listen to three of his songs recorded live during our visit. Support the Show. Please consider making a one time donation via the Paypal link aboveOr, consider becoming a monthly subscribing patron of the show here:https://www.patreon.com/timtunesAnd get lots of extra documentation and music associated with the show.

Wheels Off with Rhett Miller

Singer-songwriter Dar Williams joins Rhett to talk about the process of writing songs that matter, the importance of finding a supportive community, and tells Rhett about the music she's currently writing. The two discuss prioritizing authenticity over algorithmic success in today's creative environment, and Dar offers sage advice for aspiring musicians.  Dar Williams was always in the right place at the right time for the success she's had over a 25+-year career. She rose out of the vibrant mid-90's Boston scene, inspired by the eclectic influences of alt-rockers, Berklee jazz musicians, slam poets, and folk artists, like Patty Griffith, Melissa Ferrick, the Throwing Muses, Vance Gilbert, and Jonatha Brooke. After a year of touring non-stop with her first album, The Honesty Room, in 1994, she was invited by Joan Baez to tour in Europe and The United States. Scott E. Moore is a veteran singer-songwriter and guitarist. He's also an accomplished video producer-director-writer and film composer, which he does through his boutique production company WingTip, inc. He works a lot - on a lot of different things: from performing his own music to playing guitar for others to creating diverse high-end video projects for major clients to scoring other people's film and TV work. In 2013 he co-composed and produced 2 hours of gorgeous meditation music for Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfrey. His business card says "soulful storytelling with pictures and sound," which pretty much sums it up. Scott calls his sound "Americana Soul." His rootsy blend of blues, folk and r&b - as well as his vibe and chops, have made him a comfortable fit performing in venues large and small alongside a diverse group of acts, such as acoustic blues virtusoso Kelly Joe Phelps, Americana crooner Raul Malo (The Mavericks), jazz artists Tuck & Patti, French pop star Tété, folkies Patty Larkin, Steve Forbert, Melissa Ferrick, roots rocker Rhett Miller (The Ol' 97's) and New Orleans band Cowboy Mouth...and even musical comedic legends The Smothers Brothers. And many others.Every few years Scott makes a record. Many longtime fans and followers feel "Home Bittersweet Home" is his strongest. Recorded in East Nashville with producer Neilson Hubbard (Glenn Phillips, Garrison Starr, Stray Don't Sleep), it's a moody, groovy, and lush-sounding collection of Scott's confessional tunes. The songs are driven front & center by Scott's signature sultry, intimate vocal and acoustic guitar, with atmospheric touches of real strings and steel guitar - all anchored by a band consisting of Hubbard's pop-like keyboards and guitar, Marco Giovino (Robert Plant, Patty Griffin, Tom Jones) on drums, James Haggerty (Josh Rouse, The Autumn Defense, Original Blues Brothers) on bass, with Scott adding his bluesy electric playing.__________________Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Prince featured the "Upper Room with Joe Kelley and Gi Dussault" on his official website www.npgmusicclub.com. We had the pleasure of interviewing Liddy Clark over Zoom video! There's a word that comes up whenever Liddy Clark talks about her music – “connection.” Currently based in Los Angeles, the Plano, Texas native relocated with her family to South Florida (Parkland), just before first grade. This was a pivotal move for Liddy, as theatre is very important in the area and the move put her in a position to grow up on the stage. Inspired by artistic family members like her cousin, Drew Womack (formerly Sons of the Desert and writer of Kenny Chesney's first number one hit “She's Got it All”), she amassed the resume of a seasoned entertainer. During her last summer in high school Liddy won a scholarship to join the esteemed Berklee Five Week Summer Program, additionally earning a spot on the coveted Performer Singer-Songwriter Showcase and praise from professors like famed singer-songwriter Melissa Ferrick. But even as she began fronting her own band at 15 – opening for major artists like Scotty McCreery and performing for major radio stations in South Florida – she was searching for something deeper than fame or fortune.Out of the gate, Clark was finding connection through tender, personal lyricism, earning praise from heavyweights like Garth Brooks after seeing Liddy perform at the iHeart Country Music Summit in 2017. In 2018, Liddy contributed a mystical rendition of “Do You Hear What I Hear?” to the Cracker Barrel exclusive Country Faith Christmas, Vol. 2, joining the likes of Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini, Darius Rucker and Brenda Lee on the album's track list. She went on to win a songwriting scholarship with former Senior Vice President of Creative at Warner Chappell Music, Judy Stakee (Katy Perry, Sheryl Crow, and Gavin DeGraw) who quickly identified Clark's talent and invited her to a songwriting retreat in New York's Catskill Mountains. In 2018 the tragic school shooting in Clark's hometown of Parkland, Florida, gave her a sense of clarity about her mission. By then, a freshman at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, she knew many of the families affected, and indeed, her own family still lived just a few blocks from the school.Later that year she was invited to perform at Parkland's Wear Orange gun-violence awareness event. Clark delivered the emotional anthem she had written the week prior at the Catskill Mountain retreat “Shot Down (Stand Up),” boldly speaking truth to power and voicing the concerns of her peers. “This problem has answers that won't be found / If every time we try to stand up, we get shot down,” Liddy has a brand new single, "Potential," out now with plans for a full album out later this year.We want to hear from you! Spotify suddenly deletes comedy albums: Could it be sued for $100 million-plus? (Talking Trends)

Welcome to the latest episode of Talking Trends, the weekly podcast from Music Business Worldwide – where we go deep behind the headlines of news stories affecting the entertainment industry. Talking Trends is supported by Voly Music. This week on Talking Trends, MBW founder, Tim Ingham, explains why Spotify deleted a swathe of comedy albums from its service over the Thanksgiving weekend – and why it might be at the mercy of big-money lawsuits in the weeks and months ahead.Ingham (pictured) explains that two prominent companies now operating in the world of comedy royalty collection and administration – Word Collections and Spoken Giants – are each respectively run by two music industry veterans who are experts in the intricacies of licensing in the US: Jeff Price (Word Collections), the founder of Audiam and TuneCore; and Jim King (Spoken Giants), a former senior figure at US collection society BMI.Spotify has suddenly removed comedy albums by stand-ups ranging from Kevin Hart to Tiffany Haddish, Jim Segura and Robin Williams – as Jim King accuses the streaming company of knowing "they don't have all the rights in place to serve this content".That's a reference to the rights to the underlying lyrical content of each piece of performed stand-up. Spotify has the licenses to the recordings, but possibly not this underlying right – the equivalent of the publishing right in music. In music, such rights are now covered by the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) in the United States, ensuring that Spotify has cleared rights to every song on its platform from the get-go.But this wasn't always the case: In 2016, Spotify was sued by songwriters such as Melissa Ferrick and David Lowery for hundreds of millions of dollars in damages, having allegedly not obtained the mechanical licenses required to host their music. (Spotify eventually settled in a class action case against these and other songwriters, via a $43 million fund.)Comedy routines are not currently covered by the MLC.On Talking Trends, Ingham wonders aloud if Price and King may have spotted an "opportunity or injustice" to discuss a similar settlement with Spotify for these analogous rights in comedy. If a party could prove "wilful copyright infringement" by Spotify on this score, Ingham notes, the streaming company could be on the hook for up to $150,000 in damages for every comedy 'track' infringed.Says Ingham: "The fact that Jeff Price has been able to raise $3.5 million in investment for Word Collections in the in the past few weeks doesn't surprise me. Maybe opportunity knocks here, and his investors can see that."Ingham further suggests that this story could have ramifications for Spotify far beyond comedy: "Jim King's company [Spoken Giants] defines itself as representing rightsholders who make 'spoken word content' – not just comedy content. And spoken word content, whether that's podcasts or the more obvious analogous world of audiobooks, is a big part of Daniel Ek's future strategy for Spotify. "

“I'll Meet You Here” The New York-born Dar Williams has been crafting some of the most engaging music of the last 30 years. A graduate of Wesleyan, Williams got her start in the early '90s in Boston. She had moved there to pursue a career in theater, but inspired by contemporaries like Throwing Muses and Melissa Ferrick, Williams starting writing songs of her own and she hit the ground running, knocking out cassette-only efforts like I Have No History and All My Heroes Are Dead. Her proper full length debut The Honesty Room came out on her own label Burning Field Music and found her a fan in Joan Baez who not only later recorded some of Dar's songs, she invited Williams to tour with her. With almost 20 albums under her belt, including The Green World, Mortal City, My Better Self and her new one I'll Meet You Here, Williams has established herself as one of the most enduring and endearing songwriters out there. She's toured with Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin and Ani Di Franco, recorded with everyone from John Prine to Clifff Eberhart and she formed the group Cry Cry Cry along with Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky as vehicle to honor their favorite folk numbers. An environmental activist, an educator and an author of several books ranging from YA to urban planning—her book The Tofu Tollbooth is an essential directory of natural food store-- Dar Williams kind of does it all. I'll Meet You Here is her first new album in 6 years and it's a refreshing blast of rootsy rock, introspective folk and horn-tinged Americana. This record is a melodic blast of utter musical joy. A playful lyricist who can also be so emotionally exact it's like a direct sucker punch, Dar Williams is one of our very best.

For one night only they will be performing at the Provincetown Art House so get your tickets before they are gone! Mark Cortale Presents the incomparable MELISSA FERRICK for 1 show only for Girl Splash! Melissa grew up in Ipswich, MA during the 70's, playing the violin and going to jazz clubs on the North Shore with her father, who managed local bands. In elementary school, she learned to play trumpet and bass guitar, which led the way to songwriting in high school. At 16, Melissa was accepted into the New England Conservatory's Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble as a trumpet player, giving her the opportunity to tour with the Conservatory's Extension Division, which traveled to perform in California and China. She was accepted to Berklee College of Music on songwriting and trumpet scholarships and chose to continue her music education there from 1988-1990. After two years playing Boston's local rock club scene, Melissa left school and moved to New York City. In 1990, Melissa lived on 14th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, playing at the Bitter End weekly and working at Right Track Recording studios and Chrysalis Records to learn the ropes of the business. In July of 1991, Melissa's phone rang and she was asked to open that night for Morrissey in Boston on his Kill Uncle tour. She was invited to finish the U.S. dates with Morrissey and to continue on to the U.K. as his opening act. When she returned to the States, at 20 years old, she was offered deals with three major labels. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stephanie7502/support

When we first began this podcast and started putting together names of people we would like as guests, Billy Beard was on the primary list. Not necessarily because we had heard him play, but because we saw him playing with everyone else. Billy got his start in Boston with the pop band Face To Face. And not to date ourselves but we totally remember their hit song and video 10-9-8. He has worked over the years with Patty Griffin, Melissa Ferrick, Kris Delmhorst, the late Mark Sandman from the great Boston band Morphine, Rose Cousins, Lori McKenna and Kim Richey to name just a few. Billy is part of the award-winning band Session Americana, and has toured extensively in the US and Europe and is another example of how he continues to draw amazing musicians together. We just caught him recently at the Lizard Lounge playing with some of the same wonderful singer-songwriters with Sub Rosetta – a smaller version of the Sub Rosa collaboration with some of Boston’s great musicians. They will be at the Lizard Lounge every third Wednesday. It is appropriate that Billy won a Boston Music Award for Unsung Hero in 2008 – in celebration of his hard work and commitment to the Boston music scene. Korby Lenker, Megan Slankard, and Alex WongThese three amazing singer/songwriters stopped by CAU on their way to perform at "Space" in Evanston. That was over a year ago and the files were lost, but now found. Check out the Bio on these artists and you can see just how amazing they areKORBY LENKER: Korby Lenker is a sneaky-good songwriter. And singer. And multi-instrumentalist. An abbreviated list of Lenker's achievements so far includes: a significant amount of airplay on the legendary Seattle indie rock station KEXP; a BBC 2 interview with Bob Harris, which is only about the highest honor a rootsy singer-songwriter touring the U.K. can get; opening slots for acts ranging from Willie Nelson to Ray LaMontagne, Nickel Creek, Keith Urban, Susan Tedeschi and Tristan Prettyman; a successful run with one of the hottest young West Coast bluegrass bands of the aughts; and wins in the Merlefest folk songwriting contest as well as the Kerrville Folk Festival's elite New Folk songwriting competition. Lenker's composition "My Little Life" brought him the Kerrville honors this year. It doesn't seem possible that one song could work so well in such disparate worlds, but it also proved its powers as a galvanizing piece of indie-pop, drawing a small army of likeminded, rising Nashville artists and personalities--Jeremy Lister and Katie Herzig to name two--to make lip-syncing, ukulele-strumming cameos in Lenker's music video. MEGAN SLANKARD: "Nearly everyone who encounters this attractive and sophisticated singer-songwriter agrees that she has 'star' written all over her," says Acoustic Guitar Magazine about Megan Slankard. "She forges a distinctive sound with her smooth and courageous vocal dynamics, intelligent and diverse song styles, and sheer infectious enthusiasm." Slankard, who has sold just over 20,000 copies of her three CDs, self-produced her first CD at age eighteen and her third with help from Counting Crow's guitarist Dan Vickrey, and is currently working on a new project. Last year Slankard formed a new alt-rock band, and is already getting industry attention having been selected as a semi-finalist in Discmaker's 2007 Independent Music World Series and a finalist in the 2008 Musician's Atlas/Borders Books Independent Music Awards - even before the official release of her new band's first album, scheduled for mid-2008. Slankard and her music have appeared on TLC's "What Not To Wear", generating purchases by TV viewers after her first appearance that placed her second CD "Freaky Little Story" on the 5 spot on Amazon.com CD sales charts and on the Top-10 Rock Bestseller list on CDBaby.com. Because of the episode's popularity, the show's producers featured her in a follow-up episode, bringing her back onto the Top-10 with "Freaky Little Story". Upon its release months later, "A Little Extra Sun" also reached the Top-10 sales chart. Her songs have also earned over 175,000 plays on MySpace.com, and "Freaky Little Story" remains a Top-20 all time Rock Bestseller on CDBaby.com to this day. Slankard's music has also been featured on San Francisco AAA station KFOG's compilation CD and has been spun over 500 times on Modesto, CA. She has been featured in Rockgrl Magazine, Owl Magazine, The Synthesis, and online sources Fresh Tracks and Women In Rock, in addition to Acoustic Guitar magazine, whose editors named "Freaky Little Story" one of their top albums of 2005. She was a final selection artist for RPM Direct Presents: Unsigned Artists Volume 3 compilation CD; an A&R Online featured artist; a Song and Film Spotlight artist; and, an Acoustic Cafe featured artist on the "One to Watch" syndicated radio program (sponsored by the USA Songwriting Competition). Slankard also co-wrote and performed on the title track of Dire Straits founding member David Knopfler's new record, "Ship of Dreams". Megan has performed in over 200 cities in five different countries, including at showcases in Boston (NEMO) and Toronto (NXNE), on three tours as support for David Knopfler (Germany and England), and at the international festival InGuitar in Zurich (Switzerland). She will resume touring after the completion of the new CD. ALEX WONG: Alex Wong is a Brooklyn-based producer, writer and performer whose signature sonic style resonates in all he creates-from cinematic pop soundscapes to electronic tinged theater scores to his honest, direct songwriting. He has produced recordings with leading artists such as Delta Rae, Ari Hest, Elizabeth and the Catapult, Melissa Ferrick, Vienna Teng and Grammy nominee Ximena Sarinana. Alex has garnered critical acclaim for his songwriting collaborations with recording artists Amber Rubarth (The Paper Raincoat), Vienna Teng, Paul Freeman, Elizabeth and the Catapult and Alex Berger (Independent Music Award winner). His songwriting has been heard in film and television projects such as "The Last Song" (Disney/Touchstone), "One Tree Hill," and "The Lincoln Lawyer" (Lion's Gate). So I talked about the implications of marriage equality, and what that's going to mean for marketing going forward. So since then we've heard from Jeremy Wallace, Alice Derock, Bryce Summers, Rolla Selbak, Ann Townsend, Diane Conklin, Michele Wierzgac, and Melissa Ferrick. So we've had some pretty awesome lineup, if I do say so myself, of guests that I've had on the show. So I'm definitely planning on having more guests coming in the next few months or so to kind of wrap up the year. But today I wanted to talk with you one-on-one in response to a reader's question. So this question is really lengthy, and it's really, really astute and I think requires a podcast response versus me trying to create a blog out of it, or just email them back. Because there's a lot in the question itself, and I think that it's probably a little more common of a thought process than we might want to believe. So I really wanted to take time today to dedicate answering this question in as much detail as I can. And I'll read the entire question first, and then I'm going to break it up not necessarily line by line per say, but I'm definitely going to break it up so that way I can address very specific points that have been brought up in that question. So before we get into answering this question, which I'm hoping is going to be very informative for you, I do want to bring up a couple of things, because we are at the end of October, and we are on episode number 70,

Thanks for listening to episode #69 of the podcast. Today’s guest, Melissa Ferrick, is a master of many trades – an acclaimed performing artist (currently listed as #20 of the top 50 women in indie music), a record label owner as well as a professor at Berklee College of Music. She shares her take on the evolution of the music industry in the digital age, her ups and downs and the lessons she’s learned as a business owner as well as the new music venture she started. I’ve been a fan for over a decade and I know after hearing her insights, you will be too. I hope you enjoy the episode. As always, feel free to leave your feedback! AUDIO TITLE:  Episode #69 – Melissa Ferrick Interview Jenn T Grace: My first question that we just kind of briefly went over would be how did you become to the place that you are today? Like what was the path that led you to being on your twelfth album for example that you are in the process of releasing now? Melissa Ferrick: Sure. Really started in 1991. I had an opportunity to open for Morrissey, the former lead singer of the band called the Smiths. And I was signed to a major label deal at that time, I was signed to Atlantic Records. So my first album came out in 1993, and I had an incredible opportunity to be an artist on a major label, which not a lot of people have that. It was really the hay day of the music industry. You're talking about Nirvana, and Jewel, and Hootie and the Blowfish, and Sound Garden; it was a great time to be putting records out. And in '95 I put a second record out with them, and didn't sell enough records. I did have some success in Europe on those two albums, and some success in the states too, as far as just name recognition and having the ability to get on some pretty cool tours. Particularly Weezer I think for me was the coolest one I got to be on. And then that started my path of independent record labels, and DIY, and cell phones came out, and AOL started. So I really was one of these people- I am one of these people that had survived a lot of changes in the music industry. So I signed an Indie deal with a label in Boulder, Colorado and made three records for them. And that was a pretty standard 50/50 deal at the time. That was- from a business perspective anyway, that was the new thing. Look we're going to give the artist 50% instead of 10% which is what major labels gave them. However you were going from a budget of a major label of $150,000 to make a record to a budget of $5,000. So the numbers didn't really make a lot of sense. So that 50% back actually wasn't as great as it seemed. However I do still get royalty checks from them, so that's great because you recouped. You made the $5,000 back, and at Atlantic it was hard to make the $150,000 back. So that was really- after I finished working with Warp Records and Rob Gordon in Boulder, that was in 1999 I gave him the record 'Freedom' which the song 'Drive' is on, which is like my most popular song. And that was when I realized that I should be doing this on my own and putting out records on my own label. Certainly at that time Ani DiFranco, she was huge at that time, and she was owning her own record label and putting records out. And then this other woman named Amiee Mann that I'm a huge fan of had this record called 'Magnolia' and it won an Oscar, and the label that she had bet on didn't want to put the record out. So everything was really, really changing and I thought, 'Well I've got to just open up my own label.' So I did, and I started my record label in the year 2000 with an $8,000 credit card,

By Adam Renn Olenn May 21, 2014 Deni Hlavinka and Chris West had never met at Berklee, even though they’d been collaborating for years. These songwriters found each other online and mailed half-finished mp3s back and forth to finish each other's songs. Together, they make up the Western Den. At Berklee they added musicians to the lineup, and perform regularly with Tim Reynolds on violin and Ro Rowan on cello. Their EP Battle Hymns was released in 2013 and was followed by Midwinter, an EP which raised more than $1,000 for victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. They opened for Melissa Ferrick on the Northeast leg of her national tour. This summer they’ll be gigging regionally, including a featured performance at Symphony Hall with the Boston Pops, and working on their first full-length album.

THE BARN BIRDS are a collaboration between veteran North Carolina Americana songsmith/guitarist Jonathan Byrd and Northwest singer/fiddler/guitarist Chris Kokesh, known for her work with Misty River. Jonathan and Chris Kokesh met in 2007 and dubbed themselves the Barn Birds when they made their first recordings together. The duo's self titled album is an album about romantic love expressed with sophisticated musicality, smart songs and great sound. Byrd and Kokesh include songs written with and by Amy Speace, Anthony da Costa, Carey West, Corin Raymond, Anais Mitchell, Rob Vaarmeyer, Luke Dick, and the late Jack Hardy. MELISSA FERRICK signed to Atlantic Records in the mid-90s. Ferrick was part of a new wave of alt-rock femalesincluding artists like Liz Phair, PJ Harvey and college-mate Paula Colewho sang about womanhood with sharp, unchecked honesty. Morrissey proved an early champion when he personally invited her to tour as his opening act, and Ferrick eventually went on to found her own label and release a string of albums and EPs (more than 16 to date) in which she played almost every instrument herself. She tours regularly and plays to packed houses across the U.S. Her latest is 'the truth is' on MPress Records.
