One of my favorite books when I was young was titled "Joni: An Unforgettable Story". It chronicled the life of Joni Eareckson Tada after she broke her neck in a diving accident at the age of 18 and became a paraplegic. Joni is now 74 years old, and has battled breast cancer, and endures chronic "jaw-splitting" pain. Yet she continues to serve God faithfully from her wheelchair. In today's episode, I discuss another brief excerpt from another one of her books which has been an encouragement to me as I ponder the mysteries of God's sovereignty. It's excellent!Thank you for joining me for another bonus episode of the While We're Waiting podcast in this year-long series in which I share our family's experiences as our teenage daughter Hannah battled glioblastoma brain cancer from February 2008 through February 2009. "When pushed up against a dead-end wall, the only option is to trust God." In this special episode, best-selling author and disability advocate, Joni Eareckson Tada celebrates the 45th anniversary edition of her book- Joni: An Unforgettable journey. Joni shares beautiful and intimate details of her journey with God after breaking her neck in a diving accident and becoming completely paralyzed at age 17. Her determination to trust the faithfulness of God - even now, in the midst of chronic pain and a battle with cancer - has turned a tragedy into a powerful tool God continues to use in thousands - if not millions - of peoples' lives. If you're struggling to find hope and meaning in your painful trial, don't miss this episode. And be sure to share it with a friend! Important Takeaways from Show We encounter the Lord from deep places - in the vulnerable and the unknown. When you're pushed up against a dead-end wall, the only option is to trust God and cast your cares on Him. Melt yourself into the circumstance as if walking through a dead-end wall - enter your pain and find Jesus there. If you think God is asking too much, remember with His grace you can do it. Trials were intended to completely flatten our self-sufficiency. If we are still putting up a fight, there is a crust of pride that needs to be peeled away. God wants to be the first thing we think of when we wake up and the center of our universe. In the midst of the trials, talk to the pain and situation; give yourself a good talking to. "We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed." 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 Like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, as we walk into the flames, Jesus will meet us there. Make the suffering useful as you come in agreement with the Lord; doing the hard thing with patient endurance. "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." Genesis 50:20 Take the trial and use it as a platform of ministry to comfort others in their hurts. Don't worry about the breadth of your ministry, worry about the depth of your life with Christ. Remember what it means that Christ died for you - sit with your justification and go deep. Fall in love with Jesus - He wants to build His Kingdom in us more than through us. As we think about God's attributes, we are more aware of our sin - which makes us quicker to repent. Think magnificently about God and see Him in His majesty. Trust in the Lord at all times Psalm 62:8 "Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God." “Perseverance is so key. It means staying the course, not deviating, holding fast…and especially remaining patient. Patience over time leads to perseverance. And perseverance leads to character.”When it comes to character-building, wouldn’t we all love to have a quick fix? But that’s not the way God works. It is a slow process. Through a series of small victories in suffering, our perseverance is strengthened and character is built. Today on the podcast Crystal is sitting down with Joni Eareckson Tada to talk about patience in suffering that leads to perseverance. As Joni celebrates a ministry milestone – broadcasting 10,000 episodes of the Joni and Friends radio program – she’s sharing about the long, slow road of endurance. Through quadriplegia, two rounds of breast cancer, chronic pain, and now a pandemic, hear where Joni finds the strength to continue rolling up to the microphone decade after decade to share encouragement with others in need of hope in their hardship.More from Joni:Perseverance in SufferingJoni: An Unforgettable StoryFinding God in Hidden PlacesA Place of Healing: Wrestling with the Mysteries of Suffering, Pain, and God's Sovereignty Questions or comments? “God has taught me that he wants to display his power in my life in far more glorious ways than if I were to jump out of this wheelchair.” -Joni Eareckson TadaToday marks an extraordinary anniversary for Joni Eareckson Tada: 53 years since she took a dive that redirected the course of her life. Becoming a quadriplegic without the use of her hands at age 17 brought unexpected struggles… a battle with depression, suicidal thoughts, and desperate prayers for healing. Do I not have enough faith? But as Joni has trusted God over the past 5 decades, he’s been faithful to heal her in another way, a more important way. Because the good of the soul is more important than the good of the body. Today on the podcast, Crystal is sitting down with Joni to have an honest conversation about healing and why God allows hardships and pain to remain in our lives. Even though Joni hasn’t received physical healing, she shares about God’s unmistakable power in the deeper way that she has been healed. Are you are struggling with a disability or illness? Do you feel like your prayers for healing have gone unanswered? Be encouraged today as you listen to this powerful conversation about finding a deeper healing.
