“Written from the point of view of one character and then another scene from the another character. Now, we would never shift point of view within a scene, but each scene, each segment of the book is from a different point of view.” - Lawrence ConnollyIn this How To Write the Future episode, “Building Character-Driven Action Adventure Stories with Lawrence Connolly,” podcast host Beth Barany interviews author Lawrence Connolly, where they explore his upcoming exciting projects, including a feature film with his brother and his new novel. They also dive into using deep POV to create characters that are emotionally compelling to draw a reader into the author's world and share advice for writers working on film adaptations.ABOUT LAWRENCE C. CONNOLLYLawrence C. Connolly's books include the collections This Way to Egress, whose titular tale of psychological horror was adapted for the Mick Garris film Nightmare Cinema; and the Bram-Stoker-nominated Voices, which features Connolly's best stories from The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Twilight Zone, Year's Best Horror, and other top magazines and anthologies of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. A third collection, Visions, was praised by Publishers Weekly for featuring an eclectic mix of “entertaining and satisfying” SF. His novels include the eco-thrillers Veins, Vipers, and Vortex. World Fantasy Award winner T. E. D. Klein called Veins “a crime thriller as intense and fast-moving as a Tarantino movie.” This fall, Caezik Science Fiction will release his new novel Minute-Men: Execute & Run, a globetrotting adventure that combines elements of military science fiction, gaming, and medical suspense in a thrilling reinvention of the superhero genre. He is collaborating with brother Christopher Connolly and Academy Award-winning producer Jonathan Sanger to develop a feature film based on Execute & Run. He is also the writer of Mystery Theatre, a podcast produced by Prime Stage Theatre, who premiered his adaptation of Frankenstein in 2022. His newset commission, a play based on the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe, opens in November 2025 at Pittsburgh's New Hazelett Theatre.More at MinuteMenNovel.com. Website: https://lawrencecconnolly.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lawrence.c.connolly.9Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lawrence_c_connolly/SHOW PRODUCTION BY Beth BaranySHOW CO-PRODUCTION + NOTES by Kerry-Ann McDadeEDITORIAL SUPPORT by Iman Llompartc. 2025 BETH BARANYhttps://bethbarany.com/Questions? In this episode of the Movement Logic Podcast, Laurel Beversdorf talks with strength coach James Lederach, MS, CSCS, about the deeper side of coaching and how helping someone get stronger often means helping them grow as a person. Together, they explore the benefits of strength development for adults and kids, training that supports rather than interferes with sport, the downsides of early sport specialization in youth, and the broader life lessons that strength training offers beyond physical health and performance.James and Laurel reflect on how training develops resilience, self-reliance, and emotional steadiness for both kids and adults. They discuss how good coaching balances structure with empathy, how strength training teaches self-trust, and why the most meaningful outcomes of training have less to do with performance and more to do with who we become through the process.SITE WIDE SALE — Save $$ on our Movement Logic TutorialsFOLLOW @MovementLogicTutorials on InstagramRESOURCESBell, 2018; PMID: 30135085DiFiori, 2014; PMID: 24463910Post, 2017; PMID: 28288281Post, 2016; PMID: 27807260VISIT James Lederach's Gym Heavy Athletics FOLLOW @james_lederach on Instagram

Children often feel mixed emotions when a new adult enters their lives. They wonder if they can trust them, laugh with them, or look up to them. A common mistake step-parents make is expecting respect right away without considering how the child feels. My guest today, Brother Harold Gretzky, shares his experience with blending families. He also shares how his experience serving in the United States Navy taught him lessons in honesty, integrity, and transparency that can help anyone navigate relationships and life challenges.Early Childhood Memories (00:06:34 – 00:15:07)· Brother Gretzky shares several memories from his childhood. He grew up near a Cold War missile base and strawberry farms, and he fondly remembers family stories about his grandfathers.· He talks about the family's move from Queens to Michigan, which brought them to an engineering town because of his father's invention in bowling technology with the Brunswick pin setter. · Brother Gretzky recalls riding his red Schwinn bike and attending Catholic catechism, even though he sometimes would have preferred staying home to watch his favorite cartoons.Sailing & Family Bonding (00:19:13 – 00:24:19)· A major part of Brother Gretzky's youth was competitive sailing. His father built a sailboat from scratch, a symbol of both ingenuity and family teamwork. · He describes their weekly Sunday races, his father's growing skill as a skipper, and how sailing became their main outlet. It also taught important life lessons, like sportsmanship and perseverance.Learning Accountability and Command through Navy Life (00:25:44 – 00:41:00)· Brother Gretzky's time at the Naval Academy and on submarines shaped his views on leadership and responsibility. · He shares dramatic moments, including surviving storms at sea, handling reactor crises, and receiving critical instructions from commanding officers. · These experiences gave him a deep respect for command responsibility and the importance of owning mistakes, both in the military and later in civilian nuclear work. The Power of Honesty (00:43:16 – 00:46:38)· Brother Gretzky shares one of his core lessons: when something goes wrong, bring it forward. He learned this principle under high stakes on submarines and in nuclear power.· As he says, "If you're honest with yourself, there's always hope." He applies the same mindset to everyday life, including home mishaps and personal relationships.Stepfatherhood & Parenting Wisdom (00:48:07– 00:49:31)· Reflecting on his years as a stepfather, Brother Gretzky openly shares the ups and downs of blending families. · He advises that the title "dad" must be earned and that stepfathers should not get caught up in labels. · Brother Gretzky expresses pride in his three adult stepchildren's successes, crediting their achievements to a nurturing yet realistic approach to parenting.“Don't get wrapped up in expecting a stepchild to call you ‘dad' because that isn't the truth. The title ‘dad' has to be earned. That was the mistake we made at first. When we first got married, we went through some rough spots. I am so pleased that I now have a great relationship with my three stepchildren, and that they've all grown into such amazing adults.” - Brother Harold Gretzky.

Send us a textWhat if your job title isn't who you are, and the real proof of character shows up in the choices you make when no one is watching? We dig into that question through the lens of recovery, responsibility, and the everyday habits that either build integrity or break it down. From asking for help to making amends, we unpack how sober clarity turns micro resentments into momentum and why quiet, ten-minute pauses can reveal more about your life than an hour of doom scrolling.I share the uncomfortable truths I had to face: fear of rejection, low self-worth, and the cost of not asking for what I need at work and at home. We talk through a simple silence practice to cut through noise, the opportunity cost of social media, and the subtle ways outrage hijacks attention. Then we connect those lessons to sales, where pressure and shortcuts often masquerade as skill. You'll hear a practical script for presenting honest options without manipulation, how to ask better questions when a customer says no, and why feedback—however painful—becomes your fastest lever for growth. This conversation is a call to choose the long game: integrity over shortcuts, responsibility over blame, and curiosity over fear. If you've ever felt weighed down by tiny resentments, stuck in distraction loops, or tempted to sell something you wouldn't sell to your own mom, this is your reset. Listen, reflect, then pick one honest action today—one amends, one ask, one small promise kept in the dark. If this resonated, subscribe, leave a quick review, and share it with someone who needs a nudge toward better choices. Your future self will thank you. Pastor Travis Hearn brings a powerful and cinematic message to Impact Church titled “Living a Life of Sacrifice.” With raw honesty and heartfelt storytelling, he invites us into the legacy of his mother—Toni—a woman who gives up her own dreams, works four jobs, and sacrifices everything just to be present for her son. But this isn't just her story—it becomes a mirror for all of us. In this message, Pastor Travis calls you to something deeper: not just believing in Jesus, but fully belonging to Him. As he unpacks Romans 12:1, you'll be challenged to offer your life—not in part, but in full—as a living sacrifice. Worship, he says, isn't just what happens on a Sunday stage, it's what happens when your life hits the altar on Monday morning. If you've ever felt unseen, broken, or out of place, this message reminds you—you're not overlooked, you're set apart. Through the promise of Psalm 91 and the boldness of Daniel, you'll be inspired to stop conforming and start transforming. Because when you see God's mercy clearly, giving Him everything won't feel like loss—it'll feel like the only thing that makes sense.
