In our second installment of Surviving the 90s, we're revisiting one of the hitmakers from the first half of the 80s - Billy Squier. Responsible for such hits as The Stroke, Lonely Is The Night, Everybody Wants You, My Kinda Lover, and Rock Me Tonite, to name a few, Squier was all over radio and early MTV. Albums like Don't Say No, Emotions in Motion, and Signs of Life each went Platinum, and while musical trends changed, Squier still managed radio airplay into the early 90s. But by 1998, he was done, releasing his final record, Happy Blue, an all acoustic affair. We revisit his greatest hits, his 90s releases, and try to determine if Billy Squier thrived, adapted, or died in the 90s. Songs In This Episode Intro - The Stroke (from Don't Say No) 10:32 - 42nd Street by Piper (from self-titled) 17:41 - The Big Beat (from The Tale of the Tape) 28:19 - Rock Me Tonite (from Signs of Life) 38:28 - Young at Heart (from Creatures of Habit) 1:02:42 - Happy Blues (from Happy Blue) Outro - Angry (from Tell The Truth) Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 547 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - New year, new gear, someone has been imitating Brian, and the scent of John Petrucci The band is back together and they chat about the Christmas break, Blake's jerk boss, and why Brian has been swinging a hammer in anger. Brian received some ire from the internet (shock horror) about an Ai advert and it upset Richard but made Brian happy. A video comparing every current Wampler drive pedal has been put up on YouTube and the guys discuss it.Richard built a guitar over Christmas by taking a Squier donor and it didn't go quite according to plan so he tells us about it in quite a bit of detail. There are some great tips for anyone wanting to build a guitar - namely by doing the opposite of some of the things Richard did. Brian tries to lead Richard into more gear purchases. The guys then look at a response to Behringer about their LM Drum from one of the pioneers of music synthesis. The debate about budget pedals rolls on as Keeley announces some wallet friendly pedals so the guys talk about it before lamenting one of Brian's less successful pedals. Richard has some of John Petrucci's cologne and the guys discuss their signature scents. Brian had a tip off from one of our good friends and he discovered someone has been ripping him off.270 degrees of tabs, Special pyjamas, Hammer talk, Terrible jokes, Codpasting, James Walkenlots, Bert Weedon...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
We kick off the episode with a coronation of the one man who had the most hit songs (5) as the lead singer for five different groups, plus a solo act... he's the lead singer version of Michael McDonald. Then, it's the Billy Squire game! The interim producer thought he only knew The Stroke, and we make bets on how many Squier songs he'll actually know. Finally, the main attraction... an analysis of the top 5 songs on each of our Spotify Wrapped lists for 2024.

When CBS sold Fender to a consortium of employees, the US factory was not included in the sale. So, while the new owners figured out where their new home would be built, production moved to Japan. That was when the Contemporary Series of Stratocasters and Telecasters was introduced - the first set of Japanese instruments to bear the Fender name on the headstock, instead of Squier. Enjoy! Back in 1954, Leo Fender once again created a guitar that would revolutionize popular music. Although many changes have occurred over the last 7 decades… at the heart of it… the Stratocaster is still just as revolutionary today as it was back then. Of course it has been a long journey since then. In 1965 the headstock was enlarged. In 1971 the 3 bolt neck began. In 1977 the 5 way switch became the stock design. In 1982 they began releasing Squier versions. In 1985 Japanese Strats started getting a humbucker in the bridge. In 1997 the US made, double humbucker, “Big Apple” Strat was created… and the story goes on and on and on. But… what makes a strat a strat? Should we call similar designs an S-style guitar? Which is better, rosewood or maple fretboards? Can you call it a strat if it has humbuckers? What about a 5 switch? Should the tremolo be floating? Why do they call it a tremolo if its really a vibrotol? Is it really a strat if its a hardtail? What mods are worth the time? And sounds… what or should I say who makes the best “strat tone”? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Chris, on the Tweed Couch. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tweedcouch/support

In the early 1980s Fender briefly found itself without a factory. The company had been bought from CBS by a consortium, and the factory wasn't included in the deal. So, they set up shop in Japan. The Uncommon Deeds Podcast was created as an homage to Kenley Dean Squier, who taught us, Tom Corbett and Justin St. Louis, how to work effectively in sports media and give audiences a reason to care. When we lost Ken in November, the only thing for us to do was once again shine a light on him. Join us as we recount memories of the voice of American motorsports, the founder of Thunder Road, Catamount Stadium, and the Motor Racing Network, the guiding force of Radio Free Vermont at WDEV, and - all at once - a common man from Waterbury, Vermont, who made a habit of doing uncommon deeds. Hear memories and thoughts from Ken's daughter, Ashley Squier, and her husband, Robbie Crouch, along with Kevin Lepage, Dave Dion, Brian Hoar, and Aaron Maynard, sprinkled in with select audio clips from our previous shows and some of Ken's memorable calls. We thank you for your continued support of the Uncommon Deeds Podcast, and we hope that this show brings you as much joy and comfort as it did for us. --Tom & Justin
