The new President of Joni and Friends, Shawn Thornton, joins Wayne Shepherd to discuss bringing Gospel hope to people with disabilities around the world. (click for more)Website: joniandfriends.orgShawn Thornton shares the deeply personal story behind his memoir All But Normal: Life on Victory Road. His mother suffered a severe traumatic brain injury in a car accident at age 14, and without adequate therapy available in 1962, she spent the rest of her life struggling with physical limitations, emotional instability, and periodic institutionalization. Growing up in this environment of "private pain" gave Thornton a lifelong heart for disability ministry — though he kept his story private for many years, believing it didn't matter. The conversation reveals a remarkable full-circle moment: Joni Eareckson Tada had been a source of hope and strength for Thornton's mother throughout her struggles. When Thornton arrived at his new pastoral position in California, he discovered a welcome note on his desk signed by Joni and Ken Tada — completely unaware of his family connection. That encounter moved him to tears, and eventually led him to share his story publicly, first at a Joni and Friends donor event, and later in his book — encouraged by both Joni and author Max Lucado. Now one year into his role leading Joni and Friends, Thornton is energized by the organization's mission to equip and mobilize local churches worldwide to welcome people with disabilities. He notes that only about 10% of U.S. churches are fully accessible, and that embracing disability ministry tends to open a congregation's heart to other marginalized groups as well. He describes the "Wheels for the World" program, which restores used wheelchairs in U.S. prisons and ships them to remote communities in countries like Thailand and Ghana, where recipients also receive Bibles, the gospel message, and a connection to a local church — often breaking longstanding cultural superstitions about disability. The interview closes with Thornton expressing deep enthusiasm for his new calling. C.S. Lewis (The Problem of Pain)Home Church Questions1. Temporary SufferingPeter says that we “suffer for a little while.” Share a story or two of people whose suffering puts your own suffering in perspective as “for a little while.” Think about missionaries in persecuted areas who live theirwhole lives under threat, or someone like Joni Eareckson Tada, who has walked faithfully with the Lord for 76 years now, almost 60 of those years as a quadriplegic.2. Restored, Established, Strengthened and GroundedGod has a purpose for our suffering, and it is not always to alleviate it. How has God used suffering in your life to accomplish the purposes set forth in this passage? How have you been equipped, solidified, bolstered, and grounded?3. To Him be the “power” forever, Amen.Usually, we would expect the word “glory” where we read “power” or “dominion.” Why is “power” appropriate? Karen Jobes claims that God's eternal might “makes Roman glory look like a withered flower.”When have you experienced this?4. Stand Fast in the True Grace of God.Peter says his purpose was to encourage his readers. Have you been encouraged by this book? How? How do we “Stand fast in the true grace of God?”5. A Final Look Back:As we finish the book of 1 Peter, think back over the messages and flip through the passages. What encouragements have you taken with you? In what way does 1 Peter provide a unique message that you need?UPG FOCUS: The Amma Kenanga in India The Amma Kodaga are a small Hindu people group living in the hilly regions of southern India, where they farm crops like coffee and spices and live in close-knit, tradition-rich communities. Joni's Secret #RTTBROS #Nightlight(Biographical, based on Joni Eareckson Tada's contributions to the Soul Care Bible and her life story) "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." — 2 Corinthians 12:9In the summer of 1967, a seventeen-year-old girl dove into the Chesapeake Bay and in an instant, her life changed forever. The water was shallower than she knew. She hit the bottom and came up paralyzed from the shoulders down. Her name was Joni Eareckson, and what happened in the years that followed is one of the most remarkable stories in modern Christian history. Now, I could tell you the triumphant version, the one where she becomes a celebrated author, artist, and speaker, and all of that is absolutely true. But I want to tell you the part that doesn't always make the highlight reel. Because Joni has been remarkably honest about it.In the early years, she went through profound depression. She begged friends to help her die. She wrestled with God in a way that was raw and desperate and real. She has written about lying in her hospital bed, unable to move, and thinking that the God she had grown up believing in must have abandoned her.And then, slowly, something shifted. Not the circumstances. She is still in that wheelchair today, more than fifty years later. What shifted was what Joni describes as learning to receive grace. Not just believe in it theologically, but actually receive it, moment by moment, as the only thing sufficient for what she was carrying. She became one of the contributors to the Soul Care Bible precisely because of what she walked through, because she knows firsthand what it means to need soul care. And she has said that her disability, the very thing she once begged God to remove, became the thing through which she found God most deeply. That doesn't mean suffering is good. It means God is. There is a difference.Paul wrote, "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." Joni's life is living proof that this is not just poetry. It is a promise with skin on it.If you are struggling tonight with something that has not changed despite your prayers, I want to offer you Joni's secret: God's sufficiency is not measured against your strength. It's measured against your weakness. And it is always enough.Let's pray: Lord, we thank You for the witness of lives like Joni's. For the testimony that Your grace holds when nothing else does. Meet each person tonight in their weakness, and let Your strength be made perfect there. In Jesus' name, Amen.#SoulCare #MentalHealth #JoniEarecksonTada #Grace #ChristianLiving #HopeInSuffering #RTTBROS #NightlightBe sure to Like, Share, Follow and subscribe, it helps get the word out.https://linktr.ee/rttbros

What we consume shapes our hearts, minds, and overall well-being. As we study Psalm 119, we see a deep love for God's Word and a reminder that His commands are not restrictive, but life-giving.While our culture often resists authority and elevates personal independence, Scripture teaches that true freedom is found in loving and following God's ways. His Word equips us to fight lies, guides us through all circumstances, and helps us know Jesus more deeply.Through personal stories and fresh data, this episode invites us to ask the Lord to cultivate a hunger for the scriptures, trusting that He uses His Word to restore, shape, and bring us back to life.Scriptures:Psalm 119John 1:1Matthew 5:17-20Psalm 1:1-3Ephesians 6:17This episode cites data from Gallup's 2026 World Happiness Report and quotes information from CountryReport's driving in the Dominican Republic. Share a commentWhat proves God worthy when the gifts are gone? We open with catastrophe compressed into seconds, then step behind the curtain of Job to hear the ancient accusation that still haunts modern faith: people only honor God when life is easy. From there, we follow the raw grief, the unanswered questions, and the stubborn worship that refuses to quit. Alongside Job's story, we share the remarkable journey of Joni Eareckson Tada—paralyzed at seventeen, honest about despair, and courageous enough to pray, “If I cannot die, show me how to live.” Her path from a dark hospital room to global ministry reframes pain as a stewardship, not a sentence.Across the hour, we examine why suffering is not a detour from God's will but often the very road where faith learns its strength. We outline five hard-won insights: Satan is on a leash; brilliance is not omniscience; power is bounded by God's plan; no pain arrives outside divine permission; and God is most clearly honored when we choose to trust him through tears. These aren't clichés—they're anchors for nights when sleep won't come and prayers feel small. We also look at how the “abundant life” gets confused with the American dream, and why that mix leaves us brittle when loss hits. You'll hear how Joni turned lament into action—painting with a brush held in her teeth, building Joni and Friends, and placing hundreds of thousands of wheelchairs and Bibles into waiting hands. A phone call to a fellow quadriplegic becomes a turning point, proving that hope can be handed from one wounded pilgrim to another. If you're carrying fresh grief, chronic pain, or quiet fear, this conversation offers sturdy language, real examples, and a clear invitation: get busy living by trusting a worthy God.If this episode steadied you, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs courage today, and leave a review so others can find it. Today, Francis Chan sits down with Joni Eareckson Tada for a deeply personal conversation about perseverance, joy, and enduring faith in a life marked by suffering. Joni shares how nearly 60 years in a wheelchair, seasons of pain, illness, and discouragement have become the place where Jesus meets her most intimately, strengthening her to “fight for joy” day after day. Together, they talk about what helps believers endure to the end: partnering with the Holy Spirit, building a “repository” of Scripture to combat lies, and learning to see hardship as an invitation to know Christ more deeply (Philippians 3:8–10). Joni also reflects on the beauty of community that grows organically around weakness, the joy of serving “the least of these,” and the hope of heaven that shapes how we live now. If you've been discouraged, tired, or tempted to give up, this episode will strengthen your faith and remind you that Jesus is near and worth holding onto. And we encourage you to dive deeper into a revelation of the love of God with Francis' latest book, “Beloved.” It's available now wherever books are sold.

Share a commentA smear campaign can travel faster than truth, and the first Christians felt it—accused of treason, atheism, immorality, even cannibalism. We open that history not to chase outrage, but to ask a harder question: what profile should the world see when it looks at followers of Jesus today? Rather than staging a public-relations blitz, Peter writes to scattered believers with a steadier strategy—endure with joy, live with integrity, and let the gospel rewrite minds one person at a time.We walk through Peter's surprising claim that Christians can “greatly rejoice” even while distressed by trials. That joy isn't a mood hack; it's rooted in a living hope, a living Lord, and an inheritance that can't fade. We draw a sharp line between happiness and joy, share Joni Eareckson Tada's vulnerable morning prayer, and name four truths that reframe suffering: trials are not eternal, never wasteful, always painful, and relentlessly refining. From helicopter parenting to the goldsmith's fire, the pictures are plain: God doesn't swoop in to spare us from every hardship; he forges endurance and maturity through them. The heart of the conversation lands here: loving an unseen Christ. You haven't seen him, yet you love him; you don't see him now, yet you believe and rejoice. That unseen loyalty is the test—do we love Jesus or just the good life we hope he gives? By holding joy and sorrow together, Peter offers a resilient, hopeful profile for a skeptical age: gracious, grateful, future-focused people who endure with courage and reflect the face of Christ through the heat. As 2025 wraps up and 2026 gets started, we thought we'd take a look back on all the great conversations we've had over the past year and pick a few of our favorites to share with you. Whitney and Content Producer Eric Case talk through their reactions to episodes with guests Marcus Buckingham, Joni Eareckson Tada, David Ashcraft and Gabe Salguero.
Have you ever found yourself asking, "Why is this happening to me?" or "How do I keep going when the road ahead feels impossible to overcome?" Maybe you're in a season where the prayers feel unanswered, the pain feels unrelenting, and hope seems just out of reach. Today, we're re-releasing one of our favorite episodes with Joni Eareckson Tada, whose life was forever changed in an instant at the age of seventeen. A reckless dive into shallow water broke her neck, rendering her young, athletic body a quadriplegic, wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life. But instead of wallowing in misery, Joni found God in her disappointment and has lived a life of faithful triumph over pain and suffering, pointing others to a God of hope and love, ever since. Over fifty years after her accident, Joni is still impacting the world in extraordinary ways through her speaking, writing, and ministry, Joni and Friends. She joins us to talk about how she finds strength and joy for each day, the hope of heaven, and what it means to her to be fearfully and wonderfully made. Joni's story will give you the faith and courage to overcome the unthinkable in your own life and inspire you to press on with joy and perseverance. In this episode, Swamiji shares the inspiring story of Joni Eareckson Tada, who became a quadriplegic at 17 after a diving accident. Her journey from anger, depression, and suicidal thoughts to becoming an acclaimed author, artist, and founder of a global disability ministry illustrates the power of resilience. Joni explains that her secret lies in disciplining herself to give thanks in all circumstances — gratitude became her reflex reaction. Swamiji connects this attitude to Krishna's wisdom in the Bhagavad Gita (5.1), where He teaches Arjun that yogis renounce attachment and perform actions with body, senses, mind, and intellect solely for purification. True success, Swamiji explains, is measured not by external achievements but by inner purification. Elevated yogis welcome adversity as opportunities to cleanse the heart, remaining equanimous in success and failure, fame and infamy, comfort and discomfort. This teaching matters because it reframes setbacks as divine gifts for growth. By cultivating gratitude and focusing on purification, seekers can rise stronger from adversity, awaken their inner power, and progress steadily toward liberation. About Swami Mukundananda: Swami Mukundananda is a renowned spiritual leader, Vedic scholar, Bhakti saint, best‑selling author, and an international authority on the subject of mind management. He is the founder of the unique yogic system called JKYog. Swamiji holds distinguished degrees in Engineering and Management from two of India's most prestigious institutions—IIT and IIM. Having taken the renounced order of life (sanyas), he is the senior disciple of Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj, and has been sharing Vedic wisdom across the globe for decades.
On today's edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson concludes his awe-inspiring discussion with Joni Eareckson Tada about her latest book, The Practice of the Presence of Jesus. Joni shares the trials and difficulties she has endured throughout her life, and explains how God took her pain and transformed it into a place of resurrection and hope. 2 Corinthians 4:11 says, “For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that His life may also be revealed in our mortal body.” To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/707/29?v=20251111
You've most likely heard of Joni Eareckson Tada, but for those who have not, at the tender age of 17, she had a diving accident that left her as a quadriplegic. Now at age 76, Joni has faced and overcome so many obstacles, including cancer. God has used her mightily! On today's edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson talks with his dear friend about the life lessons the Lord has taught her. What happens when a 17-year-old's dive into the Chesapeake Bay changes everything—and the healing never comes? Watch the full conversation on YouTube. Fifty-seven years later, Joni Eareckson Tada sits across from me with an answer that might undo everything you think you know about strength, suffering, and the strange mercy of God. In this conversation marking the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we go where few dare: into the raw, daily reality of quadriplegia, chronic pain that would break most of us by breakfast, and a two-time battle with breast cancer. But this isn't inspiration porn. This is Joni—unflinching, funny, and fiercely honest about what it means when "I can do all things through Christ" meets 4 a.m. despair. We talk about the crushing loneliness of being the only wheelchair in a room full of chairs. The rage when well-meaning Christians promise healing that doesn't come. The particular exhaustion of advocating for your own existence. And why she tells God some mornings, "I have no strength for today. Can I borrow yours?" But we also discover something unexpected: how limitation becomes liberation. Why the disabled community might be the most honest place in America. And what happens when churches stop trying to "fix" people and start making room for them. Fair warning: Joni doesn't do platitudes. She'll tell you exactly what not to say to someone in chronic pain (spoiler: "everything happens for a reason" isn't it). She'll explain why she's terrified of a world that's editing out Down syndrome. And she'll make you rethink whether your church's "all are welcome" sign means anything if there's no ramp to the door. This is for anyone who's ever wondered where God is when the miracle doesn't come. For those caring for someone who's suffering and don't know what to say. For all of us who suspect our obsession with optimization and control might be making us miss the point entirely. Come for the practical wisdom. Stay for the kind of hope that only comes from someone who's been asking "How long, O Lord?" for nearly six decades—and still believes the answer matters. Paul's words in Philippians 4:6-7 invite us to bring our worries to God — not to control outcomes, but to open our hearts. John shares how Jerry Hawthorne, Dallas Willard, and Joni Eareckson Tada each taught that prayer is a conversation with a Person, not a formula for results. Through Joni's example, John introduces the 80/20 rule of prayer. True peace comes not from fixing every circumstance, but from the peace of God guarding the heart that lets go.Become New is here to help you grow spiritually one day at a time.TEXT US at 855-888-0444EMAIL US at connect@becomenew.comGET OUR WEEKDAY EMAILS WITH EXTRA GOODIES at becomenew.com/subscribeGET A TEXT REMINDER FOR NEW VIDEOS: text BECOME to 855-888-0444SEND US PRAYER REQUESTS: via text or email; we'll send you a written prayer from our team
“Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength. They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised as spiritual bodies. For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.” (1 Corinthians 15:43–44 NLT) When you get to Heaven, God will give you a brand-new body. But the blueprint for your glorified body is in the body you now possess. In other words, there will be a connection between the you of earth and the you of Heaven. The apostle Paul wrote, “Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength. They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised as spiritual bodies. For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies” (1 Corinthians 15:43–44 NLT). That means our new bodies will, in some ways, be the same as our old bodies, but at the same time, they will be different. Without question, they will be radically improved. No more physical disabilities. No signs of age. No sinful tendencies. Joni Eareckson Tada, who was left a quadriplegic after a diving accident, wrote a book called Heaven: Your Real Home. In it, she talked about the new bodies we will receive. “No more bulging middles or balding tops. No varicose veins or crow’s feet. No more cellulite or support hose. Forget the thunder thighs and the highway hips. Just a quick leapfrog over the tombstone and it is a body you have always dreamed of. Fit and trim. Smooth and sleek.” Our new resurrection bodies will resemble the resurrection body of Jesus Christ. Jesus appeared to His disciples in the flesh after He rose from the dead. He ate. He invited Thomas to touch the wounds from His crucifixion. Yet He could appear in a room without using the door. And He ascended to glory. The Bible doesn’t tell us whether we’ll be able to do the same things. But it does say, “Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is” (1 John 3:2 NLT). That’s an exciting prospect. And Paul wrote, “For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies. While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life” (2 Corinthians 5:1–4 NLT). In other words, our heavenly body will be familiar, yet amazingly different from our current body. Reflection question: What do you look forward to most about your heavenly body? If you've ever wondered how to hang on—much less laugh—while caring for someone you love, this episode of Hope for the Caregiver is for you. I recently joined Dr. Jessica Peck, known to her listeners as Dr. Nurse Mama on American Family Radio, for a conversation about faith, humor, and the realities of caregiving. We talked about my new book, A Caregiver's Companion: Scriptures, Hymns, and 40 Years of Insights for Life's Toughest Role, and the lessons Gracie and I have learned through her 98 surgeries, chronic pain, and the daily challenges that come with four decades of caregiving. You'll hear how I've found strength in Scripture, laughter in the hardest places, and peace in trusting God when nothing makes sense. We discussed what it means to be healthy while caring for someone who isn't—and why I believe healthy caregivers make better caregivers. I also shared one of the most powerful moments of my life: Gracie singing “In My Life, Lord, Be Glorified” while nurses worked on her open leg wound—and later, singing hymns with Joni Eareckson Tada over FaceTime. Those moments reveal what the world can't understand but what believers know deeply: even in the ICU, there is hope. I close the program at the Caregiver Keyboard with one of my favorite hymns, “Near to the Heart of God,” and the story behind its writing—a reminder that even in sorrow, there is a place of quiet rest near to His heart. If you're a caregiver—or love someone who is—I invite you to listen, share, and visit HopefortheCaregiver.com for more resources, music, and encouragement.

Send us a textGUEST: MATT MACARTHUR, eldest son of Pastor John MacArthurThere are several common terms for the ceremony that takes place after death—funeral, celebration of life, memorial service. You can tell a lot about the deceased by the manner and mood of their service. Some are focused on how accomplished and full of good works the person was. Others are about happy memories and photos. Still others are like a dirge, full of grief over the loss. The Bible says, “But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep [dead], so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14).To be sure, there should be grief over the loss of a loved one, for we will never see or speak to that person again in this life. Jesus Himself wept when seeing the family and friends of Lazarus lament over his death, not because they wouldn't see him again (He was about to raise him from the grave) but because death is the ultimate enemy and reality of our sin-corrupted world. But the passage above says believers shouldn't “grieve as do the rest who have no hope” because of the promise that God will bring true believers into His presence in heaven to live for eternity, where there is no sin, pain, or death. This is why for the believer the service following death should largely focus on the greatness of God and how He brings the believer into an infinitely better eternity. Instead of a memorializing or celebrating this life, it really should be a worship service of God for this life, and even more, the next.I attended the memorial service for pastor John MacArthur this past weekend at Grace Community Church in Los Angeles, MacArthur went to heaven back on July 14 at age 86 after nearly three years of health problems.Outside my parents, MacArthur has had the most important influence on my life, through his preaching and character. So my older brother and I traveled to the church, as we have done many times over the years for the Shepherds' Conference, an annual convergence for men in ministry. Only this time, we wouldn't be hearing MacArthur preach. We would be hearing others praise God for the grace and gifting he showered on MacArthur's life and the eternal reward he is now receiving.Scripture was read by MacArthur recorded from a past sermon. John Piper offered a personal reflection. Alistair Begg prayed. Joni Eareckson Tada sang and spoke. MacArthur's two sons, Matt and Mark, offered personal perspectives. Sinclair Ferguson preached. Christ-exalting hymns were sung by the Gettys, soloists, choir, and congregation. It was two hours and forty-five minutes of worshiping God for the good work He did in the life and ministry of John MacArthur.MacArthur's eldest son Matt joins us today on the program. Matt and his wife have been married for 40 years and are the parents of three adult children and grandparents of seven. He works in the investment management business and also serves as the president of Grace to You. Matt will offer unique insight into his dad and what the family was aiming to accomplish in the service.---------------------------------Watch John MacArthur's Memorial ServiceJohn MacArthur biography by Iain Murray
Q: Do you have a book, sermon, or other resource to help Christians to maintain their faith as they go through chronic suffering? My daughter has a debilitating disease that she got in her early 20's and it has progressively got worse in 3+ years. She says she can't forgive God for not healing her and even if he healed her now she asks why he didn't heal her before. She's so angry with God she's giving up on a relationship with Him and ready to completely walk away from any faith. Please help. Summary In this episode, Dr. E offers wisdom to a father whose daughter is wrestling with debilitating illness, anger at God, and a fading faith. Dr. E shares that while he's never asked God “why,” he's often asked Him “how” — how to live well through pain, how to endure with grace, and how to resist bitterness. Drawing from his own chronic suffering journey, Dr. E unpacks the difference between entitlement and surrender, encouraging listeners to reframe suffering in light of God's sovereignty. He offers gentle but clear guidance: some “why” questions may never be answered this side of heaven, and continuing to ask them may only deepen bitterness. Instead, he urges us to ask “how” — how can I respond faithfully today? Recommended resources like A Place of Healing by Joni Eareckson Tada and How Long, O Lord? by D.A. Carson offer paths to healing and spiritual perspective. Ultimately, Dr. E reminds us that we can't carry others' faith, but we can lead, love, and trust that God is still writing the story — even in the pain. Takeaways Asking “how do I live?” leads to faithfulness; asking “why did this happen?” can lead to bitterness. Chronic suffering may never come with clear answers — but God offers sustaining grace. We cannot force someone else's faith, but we can lead them gently through love. Surrendering our sense of entitlement is key to enduring trials with spiritual maturity. There are some “why” questions in life that will never be answered — and that's okay.
