There are warnings that an increase in the amount of sugar cane that can be imported into the UK tariff-free will impact British sugar beet farmers, who are already getting a lower price for their produce because of an oversupply of sugar. The government has announced that 325 thousand tonnes of raw cane sugar, sourced from anywhere in the world, will be tariff-free from 1st January 2026. That's a 25% increase by volume on previous years. Campaigners have warned a huge oversupply of battery storage sites for renewable energy is threatening to blight Scotland's countryside. The charity Action to Protect Rural Scotland, or APRS, says a study it's publishing today shows there is four times as much battery storage planned as we are likely to need for the transition to green energy. That, it says, means unnecessary damage, planning blight and lost farmland across the country. And we attend the sale of an unrivalled collection of vintage farm wagons and horse drawn carts - amassed over 40 years - which went under the hammer at an auction in Dorset. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Sally Challoner.

Led by President Donald Trump, Republicans in Congress are solidifying their opposition to extending pandemic-era subsidies for Affordable Care Act plans and seem to be coalescing around giving money directly to consumers to spend on health care. Meanwhile, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. continues to leave his mark on the agency, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention altering its website to suggest childhood vaccines could play a role in causing autism. Paige Winfield Cunningham of The Washington Post, Joanne Kenen of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Politico Magazine, and Shefali Luthra of The 19th join KFF Health News' Julie Rovner to discuss those stories and more. Simon and Mackelly hope she's packed her thermals.Chapter Review:Stannis Baratheon's army winds out of Deepwood Motte. Among the baggage rolls Asha Greyjoy, fettered and guarded by Alysane “She-Bear” Mormont. Asha is Stannis's living trophy for the lords of the north. The king plans to march 100 leagues through the forest in 15 days to Winterfell. A feat many of his followers claim his brother Robert would have done in 10 days. But this king is not his brother.Asha watches Stannis's grim procession with a broken ankle and a sharper mind. She recalls kneeling before him to save the last nine of her men and finds no mercy in the king, only duty. The southrons doubted the march but the northmen insisted.Snow begins on the fourth day and never stops. Wagons vanish through ice, men freeze or simply sit down to die. The queen's men call for a sacrifice to please their red god. “Pray harder,” Stannis tells them. Each night brings a smaller campfire and a growing list of losses. By day 20, Asha's cart horse dies. Her shackles come off, but she must walk. The food's gone, the grain's gone, and hope is dwindling. Only the northmen seem unaffected by "autumn's kiss."At last they find a crofter's village. An opportunity to fish the frozen lake and huddle in the storm. Come morning, there are no trumpets, no warhorns, only white silence. Now that it's finally aired on the Hallmark Channel, we're re-releasing our full review for everyone to enjoy! Season 2 kicks off soon! ABOUT MISTLETOE MURDERS: POISON IN A PEAR TREEChristmas shop owner Emily Lane investigates a murder at a tree farm.AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR MISTLETOE MURDERS: POISON IN A PEAR TREEOctober 31 2024 on Hallmark+, October 17 2025 on Hallmark ChannelCAST & CREW OF MISTLETOE MURDERS: POISON IN A PEAR TREESarah Drew as Emily LanePeter Mooney as Sam WilnerBRAN'S  MISTLETOE MURDERS: POISON IN A PEAR TREE SYNOPSISThe episode kicks off with Emily Lane waking up from a nightmare. She runs a Christmas shop, Under the Mistletoe, in the small town of Fletcher's Grove. She brings her cat to see her friend, local vet June, and learns that her ex-husband, Marcus, proposed to June again. Part deux, if you will. June and Marcus go on a romantic carriage ride, but Marcus is acting strange and says he's just working on a surprise. Later, we see him meeting a man named Gordon and telling him he's done what he can for him and to just be patient. Gordon does not seem pleased. The next day, the police show up at Under the Mistletoe. A detective informs Emily that a man named Marcus is dead and that a cookie wrapper from her store was found at the crime scene. He insists on taking all the cookies from the shop. June shows up and fills Emily in—Marcus was found dead. She suspects his ex-girlfriend, Lizzie Cline, who he was seeing until shortly before getting back together with June, might have been on the wagon ride that night.Emily immediately gets to work, tracking down Lizzie at her job and asking hard-hitting questions—like, “Wagons?!” Speaking of wagons, Emily visits the owner of the wagon rides, Gordon. Something seems to be bothering him, and Emily suspects it's a hangover.Later, Emily heads into the woods and finds scuff marks on a tree, almost as if someone recently climbed it. Sneaky as ever, Emily snaps a picture of the list of everyone who was on the wagon that night. There's one person she can't track down—a man named Joey. While Emily and June are at the diner, June gets arrested. Emily confronts Detective Sam, who refuses to confirm or deny whether they found the poison that killed Marcus in June's house, but his terrible poker face says it all.Emily discovers that Marcus denied Gordon a bank loan, leaving Gordon's business in serious trouble. When Emily breaks into Marcus's home, she finds a USB drive and a bookmark tucked into a pregnancy photo album. The USB contains a document for the sale of Gordon's farm—but it's unsigned. When she confronts Gordon, she spots some suspicious men leaving his house. Gordon reveals that Marcus asked for more time. Before Emily can leave, Gordon collapses. While waiting for the police, Emily has a flashback to a high-stakes moment from her past, where a building explodes behind her. It's clear she moved to Fletcher's Grove to lay low.Detective Sam arrives, suspicious when he finds out Emily called in Gordon's collapse. She insists she's just trying to help her friend. Sam reluctantly asks her to keep him in the loop because, well, it's Hallmark—amateur sleuths and cops have to work together. It's practically a law.Emily teams up with a local informant named Ray, who knows all the town gossip. He reveals that Gordon recently had his gambling debt paid off, though it's unclear by whom. Emily also grows suspicious of Marcus's co-worker, Rowan. When she confronts him, he has an explanation for everything. Under pressure, she convinces him to share Marcus's bank statements, which reveal a $40,000 withdrawal just before his death.Emily forms a theory: Marcus paid off Gordon's debt as a down payment for the farm, but Gordon had second thoughts because his daughter believed the farm was hers. Emily pitches her theory to Gordon's daughter, Anna, but it doesn't go over well. One night, Emily confronts Lizzie, who admits she didn't mean for Marcus to get hurt. Lizzie reveals that she's pregnant with Marcus's baby. She wanted to tell her boyfriend, Trent, but couldn't. When she told Marcus, someone must have overheard. Lizzie then received a text demanding $40,000. Marcus got the money and met her in the woods, where they shared a cookie. Emily realizes the cookie couldn't have been poisoned and goes to the police to secure June's release.Emily deduces that Gordon wasn't the blackmailer—he doesn't even know how to text—but Anna does. Anna confesses to the blackmail but denies being involved in the murder.Emily discovers that Rowan was secretly sleeping in Gordon's barn. In his bag, she finds the poison that killed Marcus. Rowan knocks Emily out, and when she wakes up, both she and Anna are tied up. Rowan admits he wanted to kill Gordon to stop the sale of the farm. He poisoned Marcus's flask, which Marcus drank from before confronting the blackmailer. Rowan plans to poison Emily and Anna and frame Anna for everything.Emily reveals that she hid her phone and has been recording Rowan's confession. While he searches for the phone, Emily and Anna spook a horse to knock him out. They escape, call the police, and Rowan is arrested.Detective Sam tells Emily they'll discuss everything soon but is relieved she's safe.In the end, Gordon survives, Lizzie tells Trent about the baby, and Sam and his daughter sing Christmas karaoke. Everything seems fine—until the final scene, where Emily opens a black box from her old life and smirks, hinting at secrets yet to come. With SUVs now commanding 60 percent of the market station wagons have fallen from favour. One that still finds favour with buyers is the Skoda Octavia. The Skoda Octavia recently received an update, both liftback and wagon now available in three grades, a new entry Select grade plus Sportline and sporty RS. I tested the Octavia Select wagon at $43,990 drive-away, a nicely styled European wagon with a sports flair powered by a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine driving the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic. The whole package freshened on the outside with new LED headlights and taillights, inside, gaining a bigger 13-inch touchscreen with upgraded software, a 10-inch digital instrument display and the latest active safety elements. The package roomy and comfortable in a well sized body on fabric seats with synthetic leather accents. The second-row well served by air vents and a pair of USB ports while the cargo bay gains welcome tie down points, hooks and cargo nets. You even get an umbrella in the driver’s door. Wagon buyers have very few options these days, the Skoda Octavia a fine choice offering a lot of features for the money, but it’s in the driving where it really excels. Excellent Warranty at 7 years/unlimited kms.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

✦ Produced at Assembly Studios in Atlanta, CBS's "Beyond the Gates" follows the relationships, rivalries, and secrets that follow the residents of the fictional gated community of Fairmont Crest. The fall season of the first African American daytime soap opera kicked off on Monday and features a diverse lineup of veteran talents and fresh faces. Two of the latter include actors Colby Muhammed and Ambyr Michelle, who play rival sisters Kat Richardson and Eva Thomas. The two burgeoning scene stealers recently spoke with City Lights Collective member Kenny Murray about their personal career journeys and what's ahead for the freshman daytime drama. ✦ We love hearing from our artistic community In Their Own Words. This is where they tell us who they are, what they do, what they love, and a few things you might not see coming. What things? Who knows, there's only one way to find out. Today, we hear from Atlanta artist Demetri. ✦ 23-year-old singer ivri has carved out a distinct place for herself in the internet's hyper-saturated music scene. She made her debut at the age of 15, posting faceless snippets of her singing on Instagram that garnered hundreds of thousands of views and a dedicated fanbase that has stuck with her for the better part of a decade. Now a seasoned musician with millions of monthly listeners worldwide, Ivri released her debut album, "Tower of Memories," last month, and is embarking on her first headlining tour across the country. Ahead of her Atlanta performance at Masquerade on September 16, she spoke with City Lights Collective member Jacob Smulian and began by explaining what it was like to take a leap of faith and move to New York City, by herself, at only 18 years old. ✦ Starting in the 1880s, each year on September 1, every single lease in the City of Atlanta—yes, the entire city—expired and renters moved out and into new homes…on the exact same day. Wagons jammed the streets. Furniture everywhere. Tempers flaring. Back pain? Guaranteed. From utility workers following behind to reset phone lines and gas, to real estate tycoons begging for more rental properties. So how did it all work? And when did it finally disappear? City Lights Collective member and self-proclaimed history nerd Victoria Lemos has more. ✦ Atlanta's first-ever full-time string quartet is celebrating 20 years with a free concert tomorrow, September 12. WABE arts reporter Summer Evans shares more about the Vega Quartet. ✦ There are not many places and productions where Orisha Mythology, Caribbean folklore, dance, and Black Punk music all come together to create an artistic gumbo that is sure to stick to your ribs and blow your mind. In Atlanta, we are in luck because F.Punk Junkies is such a production, and 7Stages is the place to see it. From wagon crashes to mob justice, Barovia trades one fallen paladin for a halfling with a grudge — and nothing is ever as simple as it seems.Barovia wastes nothing. Not even grief. Barely half an hour after Sören Ironwood, our radiant paladin, was executed by Vallaki's Reeve, the survivors were forced to stagger forward without him. Traxidor the Cleric, Radley the Eldritch Knight, and Daermon the Arcane Trickster retreated to the Blue Water Inn, once a lively place but now silent under Lady Wachter's curfew. They tried to distract themselves by debating Madam Eva's fortune-telling. The cards — the Tax Collector, the Bishop, the Executioner, the Mercenary, the Seer — dangled in memory, half-cryptic, half-ominous. Traxidor obsessed over the Amber Temple, Radley mocked fate, Daermon played catch-up. But amid their grief, Daermon had a rogue's realization: the Reeve's men were hauling Vallakovich possessions by wagon. Maybe the Abbot's wedding dress was already on one. Why storm another fortress when you could steal a cart?Daermon sprinted after a passing wagon, vaulted onto the tailgate, and wedged himself underneath. To panic the teamster, he cast Minor Illusion, conjuring the roar of a bear. The horses bolted. A spectral Mage Hand released the brake, and suddenly the cart careened through Vallaki's streets, bouncing furniture and paintings into the mud.For a few glorious seconds, the trick worked. Then Daermon miscalculated. He locked the wheels too hard, and the wagon jackknifed. Horses tumbled and broke bones. Daermon rolled out battered but intact. Amid the wreckage, lying improbably untouched, was Lady Vallakovich's wedding dress. He grabbed it and vanished before the townsfolk could swarm. A grim prize, bought with shattered animals. While Daermon played daredevil, another soul entered the stage: Urihorn Tenpenny, a halfling Beastmaster ranger from Falkovnia, accompanied by his loyal beast. Halflings are often underestimated — hobbit-sized, quick-footed, more grit than glory. Urihorn had no illusions about Barovia. He bribed his way through Vallaki's gates, ignored mockery, and walked into the Blue Water Inn.There he met Rictavio, the eccentric entertainer. Except Rictavio shimmered into his true form: Rudolf van Richten, the legendary vampire hunter. Van Richten warned Urihorn that Strahd was no ordinary vampire — he was bound to the land, necromancer and tyrant both, aided by beasts and Vistani alike. He handed Urihorn a potion of greater healing and one warning: avoid a band of adventurers suspected of serving Strahd. Of course, those adventurers were Radley, Traxidor, and Daermon. Fate laughs loudest in Barovia. While Daermon slinked back with the dress and Urihorn sized up new allies, Radley and Traxidor drew too much attention. Townsfolk spotted them and shouted: “Those are the strangers Lady Wachter wants!” A mob surged, guards in tow. This was not a duel against monsters but a nightmare of pitchforks and fists. Radley fought with steel and firebolts, Traxidor blasted Thunderwave to scatter attackers and poured healing magic to keep them standing. They even flung coins into the dirt as bribes. Nothing worked. Every guard cut down was replaced by half a dozen zealots. Numbers crushed them. The mob swarmed, bodies pressed in, and the two heroes were beaten into submission. Captured, trophies for Vallaki's new order.Back at the inn, Daermon and Urihorn shook hands, unaware their friends were already in chains. If Session Sixteen was gothic tragedy, Session Seventeen was chaos wrapped in cruelty. Daermon's runaway wagon gambit gave us comedy; the mob gave us horror. The party lost Sören but gained Urihorn. They recovered the wedding dress but lost Radley and Traxidor. They met Van Richten, but under suspicion of being Strahd's spies. In Barovia, victory is always poisoned.
