In Australia, alcohol is often portrayed as part of social life—especially at BBQs, sporting events, and public holidays. Customs like BYO, where you bring your own drinks to gatherings, and 'shouting' rounds at the pub are part of the culture. However, because of the health risks associated with alcohol, there are regulations in place. It's also important to understand the laws around the legal drinking age, where you can buy or consume alcohol, and how these rules vary across states and territories. - Možda ste čuli da Australci vole konzumirati alkohol, osobito tijekom velikih sportskih događaja ili državnih praznika. No to je samo dio slagalice. Razgovor o alkoholu u Australiji uključuje i ozbiljnu štetu koju on može prouzročiti pojedincima i obiteljima.

Send us a textHi lovely, and welcome back to Sober-ish Sparkle! I'm Belinda Stark, and in this bite-sized solo episode, I'm diving into something so many of us sober and sober-curious women struggle with: socialising without alcohol.Recently, I attended a business retreat – almost two and a half years into sobriety – and I found myself experiencing some serious social anxiety. I share what came up for me, how I unpacked it, and why it's so important to challenge the internal stories we tell ourselves when we're in social settings where alcohol flows freely.Whether you're newly sober, curious about cutting back, or simply want to feel more confident navigating nights out without alcohol, this episode is packed with practical, real-life tips to support you. Here's what I cover in this episode:Why it's totally normal to feel socially awkward when you're not drinkingHow to reframe social anxiety as a cue - not a cravingMy personal reflection from a recent retreat and what it taught me about mindsetThe difference between urges and discomfort (and how to recognise both)10 actionable, easy-to-implement strategies to help you show up confidently in drinking environmentsKey Takeaways & Actions:Have a Script Ready – Learn polite, assertive (and even funny!) ways to say "no thanks" when offered a drink.Plan Your Drink – Scope the bar or drinks menu ahead of time or BYO alcohol-free bubbles.Avoid the Rounds Trap – Don't get caught in shout culture if you're trying to moderate or stay dry.Use the Bathroom as a Reset – Step away, breathe deeply, and recenter when it all feels too much.Reframe the Moment – Recognise social anxiety and shift the focus from fear to curiosity.Play the Tape Forward – A powerful mental strategy to help you visualise how you'll feel tomorrow.Create an Exit Plan – Have a graceful excuse ready to leave early if needed (no guilt!).Keep a Glass in Your Hand – This simple trick helps avoid awkward questions and blends you in.Use Affirmations & Mantras – "I choose clarity over cocktails" is one of my faves.Remember Your Why – You don't have to justify it, but you can celebrate it.Whether you're sipping sparkling water or a beautifully garnished AF mocktail, your presence and clarity are the real party starters. If this episode gave you even one helpful tip, I'd love you to screenshot and share it, leave a review, or send it to someone who's exploring sobriety or moderation.

This is John VK4JPM, secretary of the Darling Downs Radio Club with our contribution for Sunday 6 July 2025, and firstly a bit of sad news. About two weeks ago Philip Webb, VK4HPW and VK4APW late of Warwick, went silent key. Philip was a longstanding member of the Darling Downs Radio Club and the Boarder Rangers Radio Club. Those who knew Philip have commented that he was a trainer, a listener and an encourager - all great attributes. The next meeting of the club will be held on 14 July at the regional scout HQ in Victory Street Newtown (Toowoomba Newtown) and will be on Zoom. The link is on the calendar entry on our homepage where it's easy to find and where it can be changed quickly if something goes wrong. Details of the meeting are in the calendar entry. Our feature guest is Peter VK4EA and we're looking forward to a better understanding of how our electricity supply grid works and is controlled, along with some information on what might be coming down the track Greetings from The Redcliffe & Districts Radio Club VK4RC Robert Thomson VK4TFN here. 11:00am Saturday 13 July The Redcliffe Club will host a Family Day Fox Hunt. This event is for the children. It all starts at 11:00am at our club house. To find us go to redclifferadioclub.org.au VK4TAA will provide more information on the day. Spare fox hunt "sniffers" are available. Picnic and BBQ facilities at the destination. BYO picnic. At the Picnic area there will be pedestrian fox hunts for the children. This will be a family day out. The bigger the turn out the greater the fun for everyone. Thank you RRT VK4TFN Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. The crazy weather has been taking a toll along the Pacific Coast of the continent and I have felt empathy for the Inuit tribes of North America. Sadly my imagination has run amuck with this analogy but the cold slicing breezes seemed to find the porosity of my sub-tropical attire and chill the skin to the tips of the fingers. None the less, I have been wondering just which roads we need to travel to align our wish for growing the hobby with the changes in technology and attitudes in the 21st Century. Once it seemed that most people, entering the amateur radio family, looked for some suitable tools under the Christmas tree. You know, pliers, soldering irons and screwdrivers with perhaps a book on a special topic thrown in for good measure. The time moved on and with it the access to very esoteric equipment which most of us take for granted now. The ease with which global communications and broadcasting happens is the outcome of the “digital revolution” and some very imaginative minds. So we have to recognise that the ease with which we can hold a video chat on the internet depends on an amazing wealth of engineering and unimaginable amounts of money invested in the machinery, both hardware and software. This is the point where we need to put our critical thinking to work because as much as we can enjoy the simpler aspects of being a ham, we have to be able to distinguish between what can be accomplished from our home station and what is available via modern technology and the internet. I am not saying we individuals should be the ones to try and design the next iteration of entry qualifications but surely it is up to us to be able to explain in plain, simple words what makes amateur radio different yet similar and successful when the powerful systems fail. Like in the heydays of the great races on the Bathurst Mt. Panorama circuit, the track-side enthusiasts could delightedly distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of the contesting super cars, I would like to think we nerdy types whether playing digital modes, contesting or rag-chewing could hold a sensible discussion around the barbecue with their friends. So it is over to you to give this topic a red hot go and see if you have some answers which can help us. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and that's what I think, how about you?

Những phong tục như BYO (mang theo đồ uống riêng đến buổi tụ họp) hay việc thay phiên nhau mời rượu tại quán bar là một phần trong văn hóa nơi đây. Quinn's in Beacon hosts monthly open mic Aside from local celebrity Mary Poppiins playing the spoons and Beacon High School junior Teo Fairbanks sitting in on drums, the house band and most of the visiting musicians at Quinn's monthly jazz jam in April came from afar. Pianist Elliot Steele, who drove 75 minutes from Catskill, has attended every first Monday session for the past three years. (It happens again at Quinn's on May 5.) Trumpet player Josh Economy trekked across the river from Walden, and drummer Jeremy Holman bopped down from New Paltz to check out the vibe and socialize. "I'm way out of practice," he says. Steve Scholz, a piano player who lives an hour away in Germantown, says it's worth the trip - not so much to jam along on two songs, but because "there's a big sense of community." Horns, guitars and spoons are BYO. Chris Talio (bass) and Matthieu Carvin (electric keyboard) offer their instruments to regulars and strangers alike as host Bryan Kopchak reads the room to assemble compatible combos. Most participants play piano or drums and the house set, a compact vintage Ludwig model, is well-suited for jazz. Because no other bass players showed up at Quinn's on April 7, Talio put in yeoman's work. During his dinner break, Poppiins pulled out the spoons and improvised with Kopchak, who lives in Central Valley. "This is the bestest place to be on a Monday night in Beacon," said Poppiins, who established the rhythm. Kopchak started on brushes, then picked up the sticks and hit the drums' metal rims. Sounding like tap dancers, they created enough variation to keep things interesting. According to Kopchak, the jazz cats began hanging at Quinn's about 10 years ago, took a hiatus during the pandemic and returned in February 2022. The forum gives younger students a chance to mix it up with experienced musicians in a real-world setting. Fairbanks plays trumpet with the high school big band and a smaller group, but he is also adept behind the drums. Anticipating his turn at Quinn's, he took a seat near the stage, bobbing his head, tapping his feet and staring at the kit. After Kopchak counted off "one, two, you know what to do," Fairbanks locked in with Steele on piano as they exchanged improvised call-and-response riffs. When Talio took an experimental flight, Fairbanks kept pace, incorporating the tom-toms into beats that complemented the tune. Fairbanks' parents, professional trombone player Jeff and cellist Choi, instilled a love for the form. His younger brother, Kyle, plays alto sax and would have shown up to the jam but got bogged down with homework. Teo would like to study jazz in college. "There's nothing else like it; you can be creative with the dynamics of the solos and slip in your own material on the fly," he said. "It's where the unexpected happens." Jazz also fosters communication onstage and off. "I can have anxiety speaking with people sometimes, but when I play, it's like me talking and it's not as awkward," Teo says. "I've made a lot of friends through this music." Quinn's is located at 330 Main St. in Beacon. The music begins at 8 p.m. There is also a jazz jam on the third Wednesday of each month at The Falcon in Marlboro.

These are confusing times, and hard times to work in a small business. As Bart Watson of the Brewers Association recently said, beer makers really dislike uncertainty. So, how can anyone plan when the global supply chain is changing minute by minute? On this epidode we talk about how to budget for the unknown. The last few months have seen a fire hose of news coming out of Washington D.C., a lot centered around tariffs and global trade. Admittedly, it's difficult to do a show on the topic because of the chaotic nature of the rollout from the White House and how seemingly concrete plans crumble minutes after they are announced. This obviously creates uncertainty in the markets and on main street. This episode features two conversations that center around what might be coming and how to best prepare. Bart Watson the president and CEO of the Brewers Association talks about the bigger picture and then Audra Gaiziunas of Brewed for Her Ledger tells us how you can best budget for uncertainty. The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 64  is sponsored by:RahrBSG / Gambrinus IPA MaltGambrinus IPA Malt possesses an elusive color falling between very pale pilsner and golden pale ale malt. He has developed and operates seven restaurants and breweries on West 25th Street in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland's Near West Side. Three of these concepts are brewpubs of vastly different scale: One a nano brewery where experimental beers are concocted, while another is a brewpub restaurant with close to five hundred seats, and in 2016 he rebuilt a 43,000 square foot warehouse that dates back to the 1800s and launched a full-scale production brewery sending Market Garden Brewery beers out across Northeast and Central Ohio.He has lived largely car-free in Ohio City for the past 20+ years. And one of his guiding investment principles is to nest his businesses within a 15-minute bicycle ride from the Market Garden Brewery. As one of his former professors once said: “Sam is a beer entrepreneur fermenting the rise of a post-industrial frontier with opportunity galore. Sam is building on the Pride of Cleveland.”The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 63  is sponsored by:FermentisHow can you make your beer stand out? While it is rewarding and exciting to own a small brewery, there is also a lot of worry that comes with it. Over time things can snowball, accumulate, and become a burden. Regular check-ins on mental health are important, and no matter who you are in the brewing space, or your role, taking care of yourself is paramount. That's the focus on this episode. Everyone is feeling the stress these days. From outside influences to internal worry, everyone is carrying a lot of weight on their shoulders. If you're running a small business, the worry of your staff is on you as well. While there are many things in our control, there are also a lot of things that are simply not easily dealt with. Finding balance from within and managing what you can is important to mental health. Being pulled in a dozen different directions all at once rarely brings calm, but by focusing on what you can control and finding the moments - or longer - to take a break adds up to a better human experience. Of course there are other considerations to mental health in the beer space, and other challenges to navigate. To get a better understanding on what is available out there and how to best access it, we're pleased to be joined by J Jackson-Beckham, the Director of Member Resources for the Brewers Association, better known in the industry as Dr. J.A former professor of Communication Studies, Dr. J dedicated her academic career to the study of American beer. She is an author, speaker, vocal advocate for the craft beverage community, homebrewer, and Certified Cicerone. In 2018, Dr. J was named the Brewers Association's first-ever Diversity Ambassador. In 2020, she was named Imbibe Magazine's Beer Person of the Year. Today, she helps craft beverage organizations develop practices that drive success, build communities, and empower individuals as the Brewers Association Director of Member Resources. The BYO Nano Podcast Episode 62  is sponsored by:RahrBSG / Gambrinus IPA MaltGambrinus IPA Malt possesses an elusive color falling between very pale pilsner and golden pale ale malt. This is always a good time to reflect and get excited about a new calendar year. To help put the industry into perspective and to think about how to strengthen beer in the year to come, I've asked three smart and plugged in folks to share their insights, knowledge, and even offer some homework. If you're a small brewer navigating these tough craft beer waters, there's a lot you can learn and hopefully take to heart. Guests:Steve Parkes. He is the owner and lead instructor at the American Brewers Guild Brewing school in Vermont. He graduated from Heriot-Watt University, with a degree in Brewing Science in 1982 and has spent the last 42 years working in small and medium sized breweries on both sides of the Atlantic. He has built breweries from scratch using both used and new equipment, and has years of experience in practical problem solving. He has been a regular speaker at the annual Craft Brewers Conference, is a veteran GABF and World Beer Cup judge, held office at the regional level with MBAA, and at a national level with the AOB board of advisors. In 2009 he was the recipient of the Association of Brewers Russell Scherer award. He is also the owner of Drop In Brewing in Middlebury Vermont.Laura Lodge began her craft beer journey in the distribution tier in the late 1990s working with a small, independent distribution company in the mountains of Colorado. Free to the public, StartABrewery.com divides the daunting process into phases and breaks it down by category, further augmented by a library of information. Start A Brewery has turned out to also be a resource and connection hub for her participation the Brewers Association Mentorship Program. Leveraging our powerful software tool, Chart-Reuse, we were able to crunch the numbers to create localized data and show that, for example, $32000 could be saved in waste hauling and 350 tons of trash prevented from landfills if foodservice businesses refrained from handing out unnecessary single-use utensils, napkins, straws, etc. Yayoi and guest host Cerise Bridges discuss the power of good data in influencing businesses and legislators—plus insights into the ongoing barriers and challenges in making change.Resources: Zero Waste IthacaCampaign against artificial turf at Cornell BYO-US ReducesChart-ReuseZero Waste ChefSkip the Stuff campaign materialsEpisode 160: From cafeteria to community: students launch reuseChart-Reuse Case Studies
