In this episode I sit down with Grigore Roșu (Grigore Rosu), former NASA researcher and computer‑science professor, now building the Pi Squared Network. We dive into what Web3 really means (hint: it isn't just blockchains). Grigore explains why the conventional blockchain model is inefficient, how his team is creating a parallel settlement network that scales, and what this could mean for everything from payments to gaming to AI‑agent economies. Whether you're a founder, developer, or curious about the next wave of crypto infrastructure—you'll get fresh insights plus a roadmap of what's coming next.Key Learnings[00:00:00] The common idea that Web3 = blockchain is flawed — blockchains are one implementation, not the only way.[00:05:00] How good academic ideas at university can migrate into startup innovations (Rosu's lab → Runtime Verification → Pi Squared).[00:06:00] The core scalability problem in Web3: transaction throughput and cost. Why traditional chains struggle.[00:08:00] The paradigm shift: dropping “total order” of transactions across the network and moving to parallel, independent settlement.[00:09:00] How the original blockchain design (chain + blocks + ordering) addressed double‑spending, but introduces a scalability ceiling.[00:12:00] The potential: with massive parallelism, transaction cost could fall to “a hundredth of a cent” and throughput could reach millions per second.[00:15:00] What this means for layers: If the infrastructure supports massive parallelism, the whole stack changes (Layer 1, Layer 2, app chains).[00:21:00] Why the language ecosystem matters: restrictive smart‑contract languages (e.g., Solidity) limit developer adoption.[00:30:00] Why it's taken a decade for this to shift: new scientific results, protocol research, and building the infrastructure take time.[00:36:00] Pi Squared's roadmap: upcoming network launch, opening to validators, then expanding languages, reaching decentralization at scale.[00:40:00] The “north star” metric: 1 million organic transactions per second. Makes everything else fall into place.[00:43:00] Real use‑cases unlocked: Web3 gaming, AI agents interacting at speed, truly low‑cost settlement for mass‑market.DisclaimerNothing mentioned in this podcast is investment advice and please do your own research. You might want to think of this totally gonzo episode as the 3WHH-Squared, as it was taped live during happy hour Friday night in a very noisy Washington Hilton Hotel at the annual conference of the Federalist Society, where John and I are present and making a general nuisance of ourselves. Lucretia was supposed to be in Hawaii this week on some kind of junket or super-secret mission, but the government shutdown interposed itself.) As we did last year, we simply invited a handful of legal luminaries to drop by our not-so-quiet corner, with cocktails in hand, to kick around whatever is on our mind. We were delighted to have Judge William Pryor of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals drop by briefly before having to run off to host a dinner for his clerks; Roger Pilon, long-time director of constitutional studies at the Cato Institute, hung around to heckle everyone; Ilan Wurman, one of the rising young stars of the conservative legal academy, fell into our snare as well, and Hadley Arkes, who needs no introduction here. (Would any such gathering be complete without Hadley dropping by? To ask the question is to answer it, of course, as any disquisition on necessary truths from Aristotle to Kant would know.)The highlight of this gaggle was Akhil Reed Amar, Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale University (and one of John's principal mentors at Yale Law way back when, which may explain a few things), to talk about his brand new and highly readable book, Born Equal: Remaking America's Constitution, 1840-1920. Since we were recording out in the open at the Washington Hilton, this episode is a bit . . . authentic, to so speak. We ask the indulgence of listeners to its many irregularities.

Welcome to another Market Dominance Guys episode, and today we're trying something completely different. What happens when you spend four hours in a studio recording sales training content, and then someone creates an AI version of you? Well, you're about to find out. Our Chris Beall recently worked with Alex Kutsishin from myfuel.io to create AI-powered training experiences. The result? An AI Chris that sounds remarkably like the real thing – maybe a younger version – and knows everything Chris teaches about cold calling, market dominance, and the psychology of trust. In this experimental episode, the real Chris interviews his AI counterpart, diving into First to Converse principles, list-building strategies, and how to master the emotional journey of cold calling. It's enlightening, it's creative, and yes, it's a little weird hearing Chris talk to himself. But it showcases an efficient new way for sales teams and enterprises to access expert training 24/7. Let's listen in as human meets algorithm in the pursuit of sales excellence. Alex Kutsishin, Chief Executive Officer Alex Kutsishin is co-founder and CEO of FUEL !nc, the world's first Performance-as-a-Service platform for sales teams and leadership designed to redefine business education and performance standards. With an entrepreneurial spirit evident since his youth, he has co-founded ten companies — from pioneering medical offices in Washington, D.C. to introducing the first American-based low-code, no-code platform for custom mobile websites. Kutsishin has won numerous awards, including EY Entrepreneur of the Year.

Beginning with Henri Becquerel's accidental discovery in 1896 Paris, Close explores the unlikely origins of the nuclear age through the chain reaction of scientific breakthroughs and personal obsessions that set the stage for the splitting of the atom. It is the ultimate story of how pursuit of this hidden source of nuclear power, which began innocently and collaboratively, was overwhelmed by the politics of the 1930s, and following devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki opened the way to a still more terrible possibility: a thermonuclear bomb, the so-called “backyard weapon”, that could destroy all life on earth – from anywhere. Frank Close is a Fellow of the Royal Society, Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Physics at Oxford University and Fellow Emeritus in Physics at Exeter College, Oxford. His new book is Destroyer of Worlds: The Deep History of the Nuclear Age: 1895-1965. But what picture of the continent emerges when we do away with making the story of Africa so anchored in European colonialism? In July 2025 award-winning broadcaster Zeinab Badawi returned to the Intelligence Squared stage to tell a new history of Africa – in all its shades and complexities – without the stifling gaze of Europe. Drawing on the themes of her latest book, An African History of Africa: From the Dawn of Humanity to Independence, she discussed the origins of humankind, the emergence of ancient civilisations and empires, and the joys and thrills of Independence. Having visited more than thirty African countries to interview countless historians, anthropologists, archaeologists and local storytellers, Badawi explored a gripping new history of the oldest inhabited continent on the planet, told through the voices of Africans themselves. --- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. We have ourselves a snappy title for snappy times. This past week we caught ourselves in the middle of the Donald Trump/Elon Musk falling out. That's right two grown men of unimaginable privilege calling each other names in public. Insanity on all fronts and we all need to figure out how to lessen our exposure to it all because we all know it's bad for us. While an ill-advised gameshow pitch about immigrants is a terrible way to do that, perhaps you take a hint from Lewis and just get a dog.
