Buz McKim, formerly historian at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC, is a distinguished figure in the motor sports world and a much sought-after speaker at motorsports gatherings. Buz served as director of archives for International Speedway Corporation and as coordinator of statistical services for NASCAR. He is the author of The NASCAR Vault: An Official History Featuring Rare Collectibles from Motorsports Images and Archives. Buz's presentation explores the racing career of NASCAR's iconic founder William “Bill” France and the origins of NASCAR in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Mr. Kim served as director of archives for International Speedway Corporation and as coordinator of statistical services for NASCAR. He is the author of The NASCAR Vault: An Official History Featuring Rare Collectables from Motorsports Images and Archives. Mr. McKim's presentation explores the origins of modified stock car racing in the illegal distribution of untaxed adult beverages, or "moonshine." He recounts the development of NASCAR in 1949 and its evolution in the 1950s from a truly "stock" competition to a manufacturer-supported testing ground for advances in the engineering and design of American automobiles. Mr. McKim's talk describes the irony of how the automotive engineering modifications inspired by "wild country boys" led to all-around improvements in automotive technology. Join my discussion with Dennis Bickmeier, who became the third President of Richmond Raceway in July 2011. Prior to joining Richmond, Bickmeier spent nearly four years as the Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing at Michigan International Speedway, where he oversaw communications, corporate partnership sales, ticket sales and operations. His career with International Speedway Corporation initially began in 1999 as the Public Relations Director at Auto Club Speedway. During his time at the Southern California-based speedway, Bickmeier became an adjunct faculty member in the University of San Francisco’s Sports Management class teaching the Strategic Communications and Sports Public Relations elective. Over his 26-year Sports Management Career, Bickmeier spent time with the former Anaheim Angels, now the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, both Walt Disney Company-owned franchises at the time. He has also held positions with the Big West Conference, Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bickmeier has also served as a sports public relations and marketing consultant for clients like the AT&T Champions Classic, Phoenix International Raceway and Brener, Zwikel and Associates. A native Ohioan, Bickmeier is a graduate of the prestigious Ohio University Scripps School of Journalism. Michael Barnes has become the oldest winner in the 75 year history of the 75th Daytona 200! There were many fancy transporters and well funded teams in the event. Barnes arrived with his Yamaha in the back of a pickup truck and took home the lions share of the $175,000 purse and a new Rolex plus Yamaha contingency. His story is one we can't wait to hear! Arthur Kowitz was a true privateer when he went up against the factory giants in AMA Superbike in the 80's. In the 75th Daytona 200 he became the oldest known rider to ever qualify/start and finish the 200! In between he has done many things on the racetrack but most notable is his influence in the electric motorcycle road racing sport! Art joins us with his story in this edition of Talking Motorcycles. Kevin Elliott is the President of the American Sportbike Racing Association who conducted the Daytona 200 at the World Center of Racing. Working closely with International Speedway Corporation and Daytona International Speedway the75th Daytona 200 happened and the total purse was $175,000 plus over $80,000 in contingency funds for the riders.
