It's notable whenever the International Brotherhood of Teamsters elects a new president, but it was especially notable last month when Sean O'Brien soundly defeated a rival backed by the union's outgoing president, James P. Hoffa. During the campaign, O'Brien portrayed himself as an outsider and said the Teamsters should take a more aggressive stance—particularly toward Amazon Inc. O'Brien granted a post-election interview to Bloomberg Law's Ian Kullgren. And in this episode of our weekly legal news podcast, On The Merits, Kullgren asks O'Brien about his plans to take on the e-commerce giant and his relationship to Labor Secretary, and fellow Bostonian, Marty Walsh. President-Elect O'Brien will lead the union starting in March 2022. Have feedback on this episode of On The Merits? Give us a call and leave a voicemail at 703-341-3690.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters just held a pivotal leadership election that will set a new course for one of the most storied unions in existence. The election officially marked the end of the Hoffa era—James P. Hoffa, son of Jimmy Hoffa, retired as Teamsters General President. In a major shift that will have significant ripple effects within the Teamsters and the labor movement writ large, members elected the Teamsters United reform slate headed by incoming president and Hoffa critic Sean O'Brien. As journalist Indigo Olivier wrote for Jacobin, “With 1.4 million members, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) election results have implications not just for the massive upcoming United Parcel Service (UPS) contract, but for organizing Amazon and pushing labor-friendly legislation like the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. The election marks the first time that a coalition backed by Teamsters for a Democratic Union, a rank-and-file reform caucus, will head the union since former IBT president Ron Carey was removed from office on false corruption charges in 1997.”We will bring you a rank-and-file breakdown of the election in the coming weeks, but for now we are publicly releasing one of our recent Working People bonus episodes so listeners can have some context to understand the importance of this election. In this episode, recorded in October, we talk with Indigo Olivier about the Teamsters leadership election and the 46th annual Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU) convention, which was held in Chicago on Oct. 1-3. Olivier is a 2020–2021 fellow with In These Times' Leonard C. Goodman Institute for Investigative Reporting and her writing has been featured at outlets like Jacobin, In These Times, and The Nation. Dixon Center on Facebook Dixon Center on Twitter Dixon Center on Instagram The International Brotherhood of Teamsters Tweetables and quotes: “A career is what provides competitive wages or salaries that allow you to build a future for you and your family. A career provides access to affordable healthcare for you and your family and benefits that will allow you to invest in your future, while a job does not provide any of these and it does not take into account the skills and experience you have developed in the military.” “A third of job-seeking veterans are underemployed, a rate that is 15 times higher than the nonveteran population.” “Teamsters provides the opportunity for veterans to use the skills they have acquired during their military service.” “What better people than the military? The military workers are used to getting up early and they are used to working all day. The military teaches that kind of discipline.”
Stocks wrap up a record shattering week with a turbulent couple of days ahead of the three day Labor Day holiday weekend. The week wrapped up with a better than expected August jobs report showing the economy regained 1.4 million jobs and the nation's unemployment rate dropped to 8.4% from 10.2% in July. Stocks initially reacted positively to the report and moved higher at the opening bell following the worst one day market plunge since June which sent both the Nasdaq and S&P500 off record highs. But the market saw another burst of volatility Friday with the Dow closing down 159 points, rebounding from a drop of more than 600. Analysis on the markets and the economy from Dr. Mohamed El-Erian, Chief Economic Advisor, Allianz, former PIMCO CEO, Newport Beach, President-Elect, Queens College Cambridge, Joseph Lavorgna, Chief Economist, National Economic Council, Special Assistant to the President, Kevin O'Leary, a.k.a.
