As a second-generation Teamster from Atlas Warehouse, a third-party logistics company that services Kroger, Josh has been a Teamster for over 22 years and is currently based in Arizona. He has played a key role in securing some of the union's strongest contracts at Sysco, most notably the recent agreement at Local 690 in Washington, which provided Teamsters members with a wage increase of over 30 percent. In a wide-ranging conversation, Leslie and Josh dug into what has quietly become one of the most consequential labor stories in the country: the growing power of the Teamsters at Sysco, one of the nation's most profitable food service giants. The discussion began with a recent win in Spokane, where drivers represented by Teamsters Local 690 ratified a four-year contract delivering major gains, including significant wage increases, lower health care costs, stronger pensions, and more vacation time. Graves emphasized that those gains were driven by workers' willingness to authorize a strike, a show of unity that forced Sysco back to the table. On June 13, military veterans and their families and supporters protested in front of the US Supreme Court in Washington, DC, demanding that taxpayer dollars for Donald Trump's ill-fated military parade and his decision to send troops to Los Angeles should be used instead for housing, healthcare, food, and taking care of veterans. Around 60 demonstrators were arrested by Capitol police. In this episode of The Marc Steiner Show, Marc speaks with veterans Michael  T.  McPhearson, Kevin Benderman, and Amber Mathwig, two of whom were arrested on June 13, about the duty they feel to oppose the Trump administration's actions and the vital role veterans have to play in the larger fight against the Trump agenda.Guests:Michael T. McPhearson enlisted in the US Army Reserve while in high school at age 17 in 1981. A distinguished military graduate, McPhearson received an ROTC commission from Campbell University. He served five years on active duty as a field artillery officer in the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division during Operation Desert Shield/Storm (the Gulf War). McPhearson separated from the US Army as a Captain in 1992. He is a member and the Executive Director of Veterans for Peace. He lives in Seattle, Washington.Kevin Benderman served in the US Army for ten years of active duty, eventually reaching the rank of E-5. He deployed to Iraq in 2003. He became opposed to the continued occupation of Iraq after his initial deployment, and he filed for conscientious objector status and was eventually court-martialed. On this FreightWaves morning minute, hear updates on a major labor dispute and a system outage impacting the logistics sector. A lengthy ⁠Teamsters strike against 10 Roads Express may be nearing an end⁠ after several months of negotiations. A representative from Teamsters Local 79 in Tampa, Florida, indicated that talks are in the final stages of settlement for the walkout, which began in February and involved over 500 Teamster drivers across 10 states for the U.S. Postal Service contract carrier.  Additionally, ⁠United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) was hit with a cyberattack⁠ over the weekend, causing some of its systems to be temporarily taken offline. The wholesale food distributor reported finding unauthorized activity and has notified law enforcement, with social media showing that receivers were unable to scan delivered goods since Sunday.  In Canada, ⁠DHL Express locked out 2,100 delivery drivers, warehouse workers, and customer service personnel⁠ on Sunday due to a failure to reach a collective bargaining agreement.
