Handicapping of Kentucky Derby 2025 qualifiers this weekend and a tribute to the late San Diego columnist Bryce Miller take center stage on the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Del Mar president Joe Harper offers a tribute to Miller, whose turf writing took him from the seaside track to Triple Crown races to Breeders' Cups. Colleagues reminisce about a newspaper career that took Miller from his native Iowa to USA Today to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Former sports editor Jay Posner and podcast co-host and Los Angeles Times contributor John Cherwa share stories about their working with Miller. Highlights of a 2022 interview with Miller will be replayed, including an infamous story about an Iowa man whose embarrassment about something he left in his car led him to a $2.2 million lottery win. Paddock Prince handicapper David Levitch focuses on the Florida Derby and the Arkansas Derby, this weekend's Grade 1 races that are automatic qualifiers for Churchill Downs in May. He also has tips for the Kentucky Oaks (G1) preps at Gulfstream Park and Oaklawn. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 12, 2025 is: multifarious • mul-tuh-FAIR-ee-us • adjective Something described as multifarious has great diversity or variety, or is made up of many and various kinds of things. Multifarious is a formal word and a synonym of diverse. // He participated in multifarious activities throughout college. See the entry > Examples: "Over the course of his multifarious career, [musician Pat] Metheny has led numerous bands, more than a few of whose members later became band leaders in their own right." — George Varga, The San Diego Union-Tribune, 26 Oct. 2023 Did you know? Before the late 16th-century appearance of multifarious, English speakers used another word similar in form and meaning: multifary, meaning "in many ways," appeared—and disappeared—in the 15th century. Before either of the English words existed, there was the Medieval Latin word multifarius, from the Latin adverb multifariam, meaning "in many places." Multi-, as you may know, means "many," and is used to form, well, multifarious English words, from multicultural to multimillion. The word omnifarious ("of all varieties, forms, or kinds"), a relative of multifarious, is created with omni- ("all") rather than multi-.

The Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) has been involved in several prosecutions in San Diego. These cases are often kept low-profile, with limited information available to the public.Key members of CJNG, including leaders of their violent enforcement arm "Los Cabos," have been charged with various crimes. These charges include conspiracy to distribute and import controlled substances, as well as money laundering. Notable figures such as Edgar Herrera Pardo (aka "Caiman") and Carlos Lorenzo Hinojosa Guerrero (aka "Cabo 96") were indicted for their roles in trafficking large quantities of heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine into the United States. The prosecution efforts are part of a broader strategy to dismantle CJNG's operations, targeting both high-ranking leaders and key operatives involved in drug trafficking and associated violence. The cases are often complex, involving extensive coordination between U.S. and Mexican authorities to capture and extradite these individuals for trial in San Diego.(commercial at 11:25)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:San Diego quietly prosecuting high-ranking members of the ultra-violent Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación - The San Diego Union-Tribune (sandiegouniontribune.com)

We catch up with Liz Weston, who retired from NerdWallet earlier this year on how its working for her - and what you can learn from her experience. Liz Weston joins us from California. _______________________ Bio Liz Weston is an award-winning personal finance columnist, speaker, commentator and author of several books about money. That was what I was really worried about - what would retirement be like? So many people are rushing towards it, and they don't really think about what life will be like afterwards. And I was thinking a lot about how I would spend my time, what I would do, what the challenges might be, and what's caught me by surprise is just this feeling of joy. I feel like a kid on the first day of summer vacation, and I know this won't last. Everything changes. This is kind of the honeymoon period, but yeah, it's really fun.Well, I'm incredibly blessed and lucky that the financial stuff was in place. It was taken care of, and it allowed me to retire a little bit earlier than the norm. But again, the other thing that surprised me was how hard that decision was to make, because I really loved what I did...And then a friend and former colleague of mine died in a car accident. And he was only 61 and we'd spent a lot of time talking about what we were going to do in retirement. And it brought home the fact that we don't have infinite time." On Semi-Retirement - and Off-Ramps "I think it's the best option, especially, if you like what you do, and you have skills that can continue on in retirement where you don't need to work full-time. I had really wanted an off-ramp from my job at NerdWallet, and they didn't support working part-time. So that was kind of a difficult thing to wrap my head around and realize, okay, I don't have this option, so this was the next best. A lot of companies, though, do have some kind of off-ramp, and I think it helps people a lot because you keep your foot in the workplace, you can have continuing, you know, because social interaction is so important, you can have that part of your identity still remain intact so you have that sense of purpose. You're making some money, which for a lot of people is really important to make their money last, but you're starting the process of exiting. And just as a rant on the side,

California Father Pleads Guilty to Attempted Murder After Driving Off Cliff with Twin Daughters

A California man is facing a 31-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to a horrific attempted murder-suicide in which he drove off a cliff with his 2-year-old twin daughters in June 2020. Robert Brians, 51, admitted to charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, burglary, child abuse, and domestic violence during a court hearing on Friday, August 9, according to reports from the San Diego Union-Tribune, FOX 5, and NBC 7. His guilty plea is part of a deal that resulted in other charges being dropped in exchange for a lesser sentence. The terrifying incident occurred in the early hours of June 13, 2020, when Brians' wife frantically called the San Diego Sheriff's Department, reporting that her husband had taken their twin daughters and was threatening to kill them by driving off a cliff. Authorities responded quickly, and within hours, they located Brians and his truck at the bottom of a cliff in San Diego. The twins, who were just 2 years old at the time, were rescued by officer Jonathan Wiese, who described the scene to NBC 7: "He had both girls. He was holding them and trying to tread water, but they were all going under. One was awake and crying, the other one was pretty lifeless.” One of the girls suffered severe injuries, including brain damage, as confirmed by authorities during a preliminary hearing. Brians' actions were premeditated, as evidenced by the disturbing text messages he sent to his wife shortly before driving off the cliff. In one of the messages, he chillingly wrote, "The girls are going to Heaven and I'm going to Hell to wait for you." He also posted a message on Facebook just minutes before the attempted murder, stating, "Tonight, I'm sending my babies to Heaven." Following the incident, Brians was arrested and initially pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, after years of legal proceedings, he accepted a plea deal on August 9, 2024, acknowledging his guilt in exchange for a reduced sentence. The girls' mother, who has been a central figure throughout the investigation and court proceedings, expressed her relief during the hearing, saying, "Thank you for the closure." The legal process shed light on the severity of the situation and the premeditated nature of Brians' actions. Authorities revealed that after taking the children, Brians exchanged angry text messages with his wife, outlining his plans and making it clear that he intended to harm both his daughters and himself. In addition to the text messages, Brians' Facebook post, which was made just minutes before the tragic event, further demonstrated his intent. The post read, "Tonight, I'm sending my babies to Heaven," indicating a clear plan to end the lives of his children and himself. Despite the trauma of the incident, the twins have been recovering, with family members expressing gratitude for their progress. A GoFundMe page set up for the girls shortly after the incident indicated that they were receiving the care they needed and were showing signs of improvement. Brians is scheduled to be sentenced in September 2024, where he will likely face 31 years in prison for his crimes. The case has drawn significant attention due to the harrowing details and the ultimate survival of the two young girls. The San Diego District Attorney's Office has confirmed that the sentencing will take place in the coming weeks, bringing some closure to a case that has deeply impacted all involved. The attempted murder-suicide has left a lasting mark on the community and serves as a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and mental health crises. #RobertBrians #AttemptedMurder #TwinDaughters #SanDiego #DomesticViolence #ChildAbuse #JusticeServed Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? When Stephens was still at San Diego State, Nick Canepa of the San Diego Union-Tribune said that Stephens “stands 6'8 but plays 7'4,” which is as good a way as any to summarize his game. Stephens has a 7'3 wingspan, weighs in at 225 pounds, and is as athletic as the day is long – he even has a 2015 Slam Dunk Championship trophy back home. Stephens rarely ventures beyond the three-point arc, but gets plenty of points inside. He's played in Japan, Turkey, France, Italy, Venezuela, and Israel, and has provided inside scoring, rebounding, and shot-blocking wherever he's gone. For decades Sea World has been committed to supporting environmental conservation by providing financial and scientific support to organizations focused on animal rescue and rehabilitation, conservation education, habitat protection and species research. Additionally, the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund has donated more than $19 million in support of animal conservation projects on all seven continents across the globe.  Despite all the good, animal lovers have been asking for years "Is Sea World doing the right thing by their killer whales?"  After one such whale, Tilikum, caused the death of his highly respected trainer, Dawn Brancheau, during a 'Dining with Shamu Show' in 2010, the dangers of keeping such wild and unpredictable animals in captivity were brought to light. The public turned up the heat on the theme park when shortly after it was revealed that Tilikum was involved in two other human deaths.  With the release of controversial films like 'Blackfish", Sea World took a hit and to this day has never fully recovered. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 24, 2024 is: ebullient • ih-BULL-yunt • adjective If someone or something is appealingly lively and enthusiastic, they may also be described as ebullient. // Akua's ebullient personality made her the life of the party. See the entry > Examples: "[Les] McCann, who would later serve as a drummer and horn player in his high-school marching band, soon developed a love for the great symphonies and for distinctive rhythm and blues vocal stylists such as Bullmoose Jackson, Billy Eckstine and Louis Jordan. But it was the ebullient gospel music he heard at his local Baptist church that touched him the deepest. 'That was the foundation, the basis for all of my knowledge,' says McCann, whose rollicking piano work still bears a strong gospel tinge." — George Varga, The San Diego Union-Tribune, 4 Jan. 2024 Did you know? Someone who is ebullient is bubbling over with enthusiasm, so it shouldn't be much of a surprise that ebullient comes from the Latin verb ebullire, which means "to bubble out." When ebullient was first used in the late 1500s its meaning hewed closely to its Latin source: ebullient meant "boiling" or "bubbling," and described things like boiling water and boiling oil instead of someone's bubbly personality. Only later did the word's meaning broaden beyond describing the liveliness of a boiling liquid to encompass emotional liveliness and enthusiasm.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 10, 2024 is: vicarious • vye-KAIR-ee-us • adjective A vicarious emotion or experience is one felt by watching, hearing about, or reading about someone else rather than by doing something yourself. // He felt a vicarious thrill as his daughter crossed the stage to accept her diploma. See the entry > Examples: “That Jagger can still sing and dance up a storm, at 80, is a triumph for him and should provide a vicarious thrill for anyone who attends a concert by the Rolling Stones next year.” — George Varga, The San Diego Union-Tribune, 10 Dec. 2023 Did you know? If you love to read adventure tales from the comfort of home, you're already a pro at living vicariously, so throw on those readers and let us paint a picture. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to study language and share what you've learned with the world. You wake up and pour yourself a strong cup of coffee, and then the work begins. Today, you are tasked with understanding the history of vicarious. Your research confirms that this word originally described something having the function of a substitute—that is, something that serves instead of another thing—and that it comes from the Latin noun vicis, which means “change” or “stead.” What's more, you learn that vicis is also the source of the English prefix vice- (as in “vice president”), meaning “one that takes the place of.” Keeping in mind the most common meaning of vicarious (“experienced through imaginative or sympathetic participation”), you write it all down so others can share in your experience. Mission accomplished!

While most of us were sleeping, the San Diego Padres were kicking off a new season on the other side of the world this week in South Korea. Joining them for the first of 150 baseball games he'll witness this year is seasoned sports journalist Kevin Acee. With over 30 years of experience, Acee remains a road warrior as the Padres beat writer at The San Diego Union-Tribune. Despite his extensive career, baseball remains his true passion, marveling at the privilege of watching, writing, and discussing the game he loves. In this discussion, Acee shares how he churns out 3,000 words a day while navigating the demands of an eight-month Padres season.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 11, 2024 is: refurbish • rih-FER-bish • verb To refurbish something is to brighten or freshen it up, or to repair and make improvements to it. // They are refurbishing the old house with the hopes of selling it for a profit. // The store refurbishes and sells computers that can often meet the needs of those who don't need the latest technology. See the entry > Examples: "The city of San Diego is tasked with completing the building and replanting the interior plants, which are currently in storage. Meanwhile, the city's not-for-profit partner Forever Balboa Park is responsible for financing and completing phase-two improvements. Those include remaking the exterior gardens, improving walkways, reconstructing the pergola that was on the west lawn and refurbishing the fountains." — Jennifer Van Grove, The San Diego Union-Tribune, 17 Jan. 2024 Did you know? As seems proper given how English prefixes work, before you could refurbish something you could furbish it. That shorter word was borrowed into Middle English in the 14th century from Anglo-French as furbisshen; it shares a distant relative with the Old High German verb furben, meaning "to polish." In its earliest uses furbish also meant "to polish," but it developed an extended sense of "to renovate" shortly before English speakers created refurbish with the same meaning in the 17th century. These days refurbish is the more common of the two words, although furbish does continue to be used.

The BYU Cougars saw an great opportunity to spoil senior night and a perfect home record for the Iowa State Cyclones in the Hilton Coliseum go by the wayside after a collective choke job in the final four minutes of their Big 12 conference basketball clash and Jake Hatch is concerned that the BYU men's basketball team may not have the composure they need.Jake then explained what the mindset for the BYU basketball program may be next week in the Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City after their bid for a double-bye was ended thanks to the Iowa State loss and he thinks a quick exit may be the play for Brigham Young University (BYU) ahead of the NCAA Tournament the following week. Finally, the San Diego State Aztecs' fascination with all things BYU reared its comical head once again Wednesday night when San Diego Union-Tribune scribe Mark Zeigler made a weird connection with former BYU baseball coach Mike Littlewood to a technical foul assessed to SDSU coach Brian Dutcher in the Aztecs' loss to the UNLV Runnin' Rebels Tuesday night.Join the Locked On Cougars Subtext Community by clicking here! Since we want everyone to be able to learn from our Patreon series on the 1992 "Titangate" sex and drug scandals in WWE, want to be able to direct everyone to the shows, and don't want to give anyone the idea that we're trying to make money off of the awful new lawsuit against WWE, we're releasing all four Titangate shows for free. Permanently. We're really proud of the work we did on these, and we hope that everyone can learn from them.---Content warning: By necessity of covering this topic, though it is not the sole focus, this episode contains a significant amount of discussion of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse, a non-trivial amount of which is descriptive. If you have any concerns that this content may be triggering or otherwise upsetting to you, then skipping this episode may be advisable. It's April [2022], and you know what that means: Time for a new Patreon-exclusive deep dive. This time, it's part 1 of a series on what became known as Titangate, the overarching collection of scandals that hit the WWF in 1992. We start in February 1992 with the attempted DEA raid of the locker room at a St. Louis house show as well as Barry Orton going public with sexual harassment allegations against Pat Patterson and Terry Garvin, which was actually the first public trace of that side of the scandals. After skipping the first week of March because we just covered it in-depth on the main show (ep. #344), we move on to what are probably the two longest weeks in the history of our Patreon shows to date. The week of March 9,  everything starts to blow up with the Village Voice story that unleashed Murray Hodgson on the world, San Diego-Union Tribune article about drugs and the abuse of ring boys that introduced Tom Cole and Chris Loss, a bizarre WWF press release, the Los Angeles Times story that dwelled on Hulk Hogan's cocaine use way too much, and more, including Vince McMahon heeling on Bruno Sammartino on Larry King Live. And in the week of March 16, we get the legendary Titangate episode of The Phil Donahue Show and all of the related chaos, Phil Mushnick going scorched earth on Vince McMahon in the New York Post while revealing Vince's shocking admission about what he suspected of Mel Phillips, Wade Keller hitting the nail on the head about the direction of the media coverage, and more. And that just scratches the surface: There's tons more, including Hulk Hogan's gun charge, the WWF still using underage ring boys after being contacted for Jeff Savage's Union-Tribune story, how heavily Savage's article was edited before publication, Dave Meltzer spotting Hodgson's true nature early on, tons of media criticism including Alex Marvez's less than ideal handling of a rape allegation blurted out by Orton, Dave Meltzer's handling of the Vince/Phillips stuff, and the degree to which media went way too hard on Hogan/drugs to the exclusion of the more important story, and MUCH more. This is the longest Patreon show to date, and it's a doozy. We put a lot into it, so we hope you appreciate it.Timestamps:0:00:00 Weeks of February 17 & February 24, 1992Check out BTS episode #344 for the week of March 2, 1992, which includes the resignations of Pat Patterson & Terry Garvin and everything else that happened that week in extreme detail.0:58:56 Week of March 9, 1992 3:23:11 Week of March 16, 1992To support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 10, 2024 is: tenet • TEN-ut • noun A tenet is a principle, belief, or doctrine that is held to be true by members of an organization, movement, or profession. // On her first day at the fashion institute, Marta learned the basic tenets of the fashion industry. See the entry > Examples: "Other tenets of sound communication hold: for example, the use of active listening skills to identify the person's underlying needs and drivers of their behavior; and responding respectfully, to demonstrate understanding and acknowledge the impact of what happened and their feelings about it." — Steven P. Dinkin, The San Diego Union-Tribune, 3 Dec. 2023 Did you know? Tenet holds a centuries-long tenure in the English language, but its hometown is Latin. In that language, tenet is a form of the verb tenēre ("to hold") and means "s/he holds." Tenet was borrowed into English around 1600, probably because of use of the word in Latin writings to introduce text giving a principle or doctrine held by a person or group, such as a particular church or sect. The word's English use today seems clearly linked: "a principle, belief, or doctrine generally held to be true, and especially one held in common by members of an organization, movement, or profession." Note that the similar-sounding word tenant is also from tenēre; it arrived in the 1300s and typically refers today to someone who rents or leases a house, apartment, etc., from a landlord. (Be careful not to use tenant where you want tenet.) Tenure is a tenēre descendant too.
