In this engaging episode, hosts Tom and Simon begin with light-hearted banter about their current locations—Simon in Singapore overlooking Marina Bay and Tom dealing with a grey afternoon in Scotland. The conversation takes a turn towards serious matters as they delve into the ever-growing problem of digital crime. They discuss the Pegasus spyware and emphasize the importance of basic online safety measures like two-step verification and VPNs. Simon suggests bringing in a tech expert to explain these concepts in layman's terms for their listeners. The duo then shifts their focus to historical assassinations, exploring the deaths of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. They delve into the societal impact of these events, the subsequent conspiracy theories, and the importance of following evidence over speculation. Tom and Simon also touch on the Watts Riots of 1965, debating whether it should be termed a 'riot' or a 'rebellion,' and highlighting the role of community policing in preventing such occurrences. The conversation progresses to a cold case involving Innes Stewart, found dead in a London car park under suspicious circumstances, and the hosts express their skepticism about the official ruling of suicide. They then ponder the role of global law enforcement agencies like Interpol in combatting digital fraud and discuss the EncroChat case, which exposed a vast criminal network but also raised significant legal questions.Throughout the episode, Tom and Simon weave in anecdotes and personal reflections, offering a balanced mix of humor and serious analysis. In The Mysterious Case of the Victorian Female Detective (Yale UP, 2024), Sara Lodge tells stories of women who brought 19th century criminals to justice, in real life and popular culture, as unacknowledged crime-fighters and feminist icons.  On stage and in fiction, women detectives were sensational figures who fascinated the public with cross-dressing, fist-swinging heroines who captured thieves, flushed out cheats, and solved murders. Few people realize that these characters were based on real women who were active as detectives in private agencies and in the Victorian police force. Far from the mythology of an all-male world, women were a daily presence in police activity, although often underpaid and overlooked. They did important and dangerous work in a variety of roles both openly and as undercover agents.  While the fictional characters were heroic figures who always saved the day, these morally ambiguous real women were sometimes paid to betray, deceive, or entrap in the murky underworld of Victorian society.  Related resources: The interest in Victorian women detectives continues into the present with dozens of contemporary novels, film, and tv featuring Victorian female detectives.  Miss Scarlet on PBS is an original series by Rachael New. The Enola Holmes and Enola Holmes 2 films on Netflix are based on the original Enola Holmes books written by Nancy Springer. More Sherlock Holmes adjacent charaters are Mary Russell by Laurie R. King and Lady Sherlock by Sherry Thomas. While many actual female detectives were working class, fictional portrayals often feature upper class heroines as private detectives such as Lady Darby by Anna Lee Huber, Lady Emily by Tasha Alexander, and both Veronica Speedwell and Lady Julia Grey by Deanna Raybourn.  Author recommended reading A Flat Place by Noreen Masud Hosted by Meghan Cochran  Learn more about your ad choices. So What Is?" by Emily Baumgaertner I have some mixed feelings on this article that I share. I chose to read it because not everyone has subscriptions to the NYT or even gets the paper. I feel like it highlights some decent data but misses a huge opportunity to reframe the rise in diagnoses as a positive shift. *** Email: autisticang38@gmail.com Online Course: angela-walker-s-school.teachable.com/p/adultautism101 Public Journal series: https://www.amazon.com/author/autisticang Substack: https://autisticang38.substack.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/autistic-ang-87494030a/ Quora: https://adulthoodwithachanceofautism.quora.com/ Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/autisticang38/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@autisticang Threads: https://www.threads.net/@autisticang38 Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/autisticang38.bsky.social --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/angela-n-walker/support

Apprehending thieves in the street. Disguising as housemaids to spy on adulterous husbands. Investigating and exposing child abuse. The exploits of women detectives in the Victorian era were dramatic, secretive, and often dangerous. Author and historian Sara Lodge tells Ellie Cawthorne more about these sleuths and the roles they played in 19th-century crime fighting. The investigation revealed evidence suggesting she may have planned to enter the wilderness with the intent to die. Her remains were eventually discovered nearly a year later, leaving the community haunted and her family searching for closure. Four detectives stood in the rain, wearing their suits and ties. It was late September 2002 in Grand Haven, Michigan, and the gray skies matched their somber mood.  They'd just arrived at a cemetery near the shores of Lake Michigan.  It was time to bury the body of a victim they'd spent the past four months trying to avenge. But so far, it had all been in vain.  The detectives watched as the Minister conducted the service with no family, relatives or friends present. Because absolutely no one knew who the victim was. In Sussex, in 1912, men quarrying in a gravel pit near Piltdown village turned up a human skull. According to Charles Dawson, a lawyer and amateur archeologist with a remarkable track record for finding ancient treasures, it belonged to a palaeolithic man, possibly millions of years old, and was therefore the earliest trace of mankind ever found in England. Greater still, Piltdown man as he came to be known, seemed to be the ‘missing link' between apes and men. The discovery inflamed and delighted British society, confirming and buttressing dearly held beliefs about the evolution of modern Europeans, and radically transforming understandings of the origins of humanity. In the wake of the find and the widespread corroboration of its authenticity by some of the best academics of the age, further digs were conducted in the area, which unearthed even more wondrous discoveries - a jawbone, primitive tools, and strangest of all, a cricket bat; perhaps the first hint that all was not as it seemed…was the greatest discovery of all time nothing more than an audacious and extraordinarily skilful hoax? And if so, who was the culprit in this grand mystery?  Join Tom and Dominic, as they describe the most mystifying archaeological discovery in English history, and one of the most unscrupulous tricks of all time, revealing as they do the truth behind the history of mankind. _______ *The Rest Is History LIVE in the U.S.A.* If you live in the States, we've got some great news: Tom and Dominic will be performing throughout America in November, with shows in San Francisco, L.A., Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Boston and New York.  *The Rest Is History LIVE at the Royal Albert Hall* Tom and Dominic, accompanied by a live orchestra, take a deep dive into the lives and times of two of history's greatest composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. (Dark Mass) *** If you were to drive from New York to Sacramento, California, it would take you close to 45-hours, non-stop.  If you were to fly? That strips off 40 of those hours – it'd only take you about five hours to fly from New York to California. But one person did it even faster than that… almost instantaneously.  (The Mysterious Case of the Teleporting Skier) *** A simple case of a man making angry threats at another man who had made a pass at his wife goes to court – and that's when and where it gets really ugly, murderously so.  (Disorder In The Court) *** A man finds out that you don't necessarily have to believe in ghosts in order to be terrified by them. (The Ghosts of Crosbie Towers) *** Reports are pouring in from all over the world with people claiming to have had an encounter with a Shadow Person. They react to the viral interview between Megyn Kelly and Bill Maher, where Kelly fact-checked Maher on Hillary Clinton's post-2016 election behavior. Kelly highlighted Clinton's questioning of Trump's legitimacy, a point Maher initially contested but conceded after Kelly presented specific quotes. Brunt praised Kelly's professionalism in handling the correction, while both speakers critiqued Maher's partial recognition of political realities and discussed the broader implications of ongoing legal battles on Trump's political prospects.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
