Let's get grim and dark with Lord Grimdark!   Perhaps the greatest benefit of having a book podcast like mine is the opportunity to speak to my very favourite authors. I've been reading Joe Abercrombie's violent, world-weary dark fantasy for TWENTY years! And now he's on the show.   Consider me excited.   His new book may be called The Devils, and it may contain werewolves, vampires, necromancers and oceans of blood – but it's quite a cheery affair for Joe. I have never laughed so much in preparation for an interview.   We talk writing the most anti of antiheroes, gender-flipping the catholic church, and why you shouldn't sleep with people who own swords.   It's a lot of fun.   Enjoy!   Other books mentioned:   A Game of Thrones (1996), by George R. R. Martin Wizard of Earthsea (1968), by Usula K. Le Guin LA Confidential (1990) by James Ellroy Blood Meridian (1995), by Cormac McCarthy   Support Talking Scared on Patreon   Check out the Talking Scared Merch line – at VoidMerch   Come talk books on Bluesky @talkscaredpod.bsky.social  on Instagram/Threads, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Learn more about your ad choices. Leslie is joined by Sean O'Brien, General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. They begin the interview by acknowledging the accomplishments that President O'Brien and General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman have helped their Union to achieve during their three years heading the organization. With 80,000 new members organized, great successes at the negotiating table including many of their best contracts ever like at UPS and Anheuser-Busch, an empowered rank-and-file membership that has waged over 250 strikes and led bargaining themselves against some of the world's largest employers, the O'Brien-Zuckerman administration has charted one of the most defining and positive chapters in Teamsters history. Next, Sean shares with the audience the Union's contract campaign with their 10,000 Teamsters aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs). They're fighting for a fair contract with United, who raked in over $4 billion dollars in profits last year, but is lowballing the Teamsters at the bargaining table. At the same time, the airline wants to outsource maintenance to communist China and South America. Sean explains how United Airlines Teamsters are ensuring safety in the skies, and that Teamster members will not accept anything less than a strong new contract with the industry-leading wages and job protections they have earned. Lastly, Leslie and Sean discuss how, following a credible strike threat, more than 1,000 newly organized drivers and warehouse workers at United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) in Florida, Georgia, and Illinois have ratified their first Teamsters contracts. Represented by Teamsters Locals 26, 79, 728, and 769, UNFI workers have secured agreements that deliver significant wage increases, improved benefits, and a defined benefit pension plan.  Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million hardworking people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. No judgments, of course, but let's say you were trying to shed a few pounds for summer — you don't have to refuse the next offer of dinner at your favorite red sauce local, the experts say. You just have to look at the menu in a new way — and follow a whole new set of rules according to dietitians Melissa Rifkin and Kelsey Hampton Abdullah, writing for Eat This, Not That! In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Thursday, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters said workers at seven Amazon facilities will begin a strike, an effort by the union to pressure the e-commerce company for a labor agreement during a key shopping period. A former top aide to Mayor Adams is expected in court to face corruption charges in the latest blow to an administration beset by searches, resignations and the mayor's own indictment. And in Washington, President-elect Donald Trump delivered a likely death blow to bipartisan congressional budget negotiations, rejecting the measure as full of giveaways to Democrats after billionaire ally Elon Musk whipped up outrage toward the bill and cheered on Republican lawmakers who announced their opposition.

He left school at age 14, worked as a stock boy and warehouseman for several years, and began his union-organizing activities in the 1930s. Initially the business agent for Local 299 in Detroit, Hoffa by 1940 had become chairman of the Central States Drivers Council and by 1942 president of the Michigan Conference of Teamsters. In 1952 he was elected an international vice president of the Teamsters, and five years later he succeeded Dave Beck as international president.Known throughout the trucking industry as a tough and knowledgeable bargainer, Hoffa successfully centralized administration and bargaining in the international office of the union. He also played a key role in the creation of the first national freight-hauling agreement. His efforts helped make the Teamsters the largest labour union in the United States.Known to have long associated with organized crime figures, Hoffa nevertheless survived a series of governmental prosecutions until 1967, when he entered the federal prison in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to begin a 13-year sentence for jury tampering, fraud, and conspiracy. Hoffa refused to resign as president of the Teamsters while in prison and kept his position until 1971. U.S. Pres. Richard M. Nixon commuted Hoffa's sentence in December 1971, stipulating that he could not engage in any union activity until 1980. Hoffa, however, fought the restriction in court and was widely believed to have covertly continued his efforts to reestablish a union position. On July 30, 1975, he disappeared from a restaurant in suburban Detroit under circumstances that have never been fully determined. He was said to have had an appointment at the restaurant with Anthony Provenzano, a New Jersey Teamsters official and former Mafia figure, and Anthony Giacalone, a Detroit mobster; both later denied having encountered Hoffa, who was never seen again. He was legally declared “presumed dead” in 1982.Tags#hoffa#kennedy#mccarthyhearings#teamsters#truecrine#vanishedBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

He was legally declared “presumed dead” in 1982.#hoffa#kennedy#mccarthyhearings#teamsters#truecrine#vanishedBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Jimmy Hoffa, born James Riddle Hoffa on February 14th, 1913, in Brazil, Indiana, was a prominent American labor union leader. He was president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) from 1957 until 1971. Hoffa was known for his tough negotiating skills and efforts to centralize the union's administration and bargaining power. However, his career was also marred by allegations of ties to organized crime. Hoffa's life took a dramatic turn when he was convicted of jury tampering, attempted bribery, and fraud in 1964, leading to a 13-year prison sentence. He was released in 1971 after President Richard Nixon commuted his sentence, but he was prohibited from engaging in union activities until 1980. On July 30th, 19 75, Hoffa mysteriously disappeared from a parking lot in Bloomfield Township, Michigan, after a supposed meeting with mob figures. Despite extensive investigations, his body has never been found, and his disappearance remains one of the most famous unsolved cases in American history. Hoffa was declared legally dead in 1982. #Hoffa #jimmyhoffa #history #Beverly #mafia #beverlyhils #truecrime #tedbundy #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #truecrimememes #killers #killer #murder #mindhunter #murderer #kansas #icp #ouijamacc #juggalettes #juggalo #bondage #twiztid #thegathering #murdermuseum #eldorado #odditiesandcuriosities #caveman #oddities #rare #parkcity #death #charlesmanson #jeffreydahmer #edgein #crime #horror #darkart #richardramirez #halloween #criminal #horrorart #creepy #btkart #truecrimeart #truecrimepodcast #cannibal #albertfish #r #thriller #netflix #truecrimejunkie #horrormovies #history #selfie #truecrimefan #homicide #mystery #truecrimeobsessed #scary #serialkillerart #truecrime #truecrimecommunity #truecrimepodcast #crime #murder #podcast #truecrimeaddict #serialkiller #serialkillers #truecrimejunkie #horror #unsolved #murderino #podcastersofinstagram #truecrimeobsessed #mystery #ssdgm #truecrimefan #killer #truecrimememes #unsolvedmysteries #creepy #paranormal #podcasts #history #tedbundy #criminal #scary #podcasting #coldcase #murdermystery #bookstagram #death #buzzfeedunsolved #crimescene #truecrimepodcasts #missingperson #missing #halloween #crimejunkie #news #myfavoritemurder #spooky #supernatural #truecrimestories #homicide #ryanbergara #shanemadej #murderer #podcaster #truecrimebooks #memes #spotify #podernfamily #boogara #shaniac #jeffreydahmer #police #s #justice #history #ww #travel #art #photography #architecture #love #culture #nature #travelphotography #photooftheday #s #historia #instagood #historical #worldwar #heritage #india #instagram #museum #italy #war #vintage #memes #picoftheday #ig #europe #photo #explore #ancient#germany #historymemes #usa #beautiful #travelgram #follow #historic #france #music #military #italia #castle #historylovers #a #medieval #life #education #like #facts #landscape #storia #world #old #city #historyfacts #archaeology #upsc #america #wwii #Podcasthost #Aftermath #aftermathpodcast #podcast #binge #bingepodcast #podcasttips newpodcastalert #Hudson #aftermath #history #storiesyouforgotabout #attack #terrorattack #nostalgia #truecrime #truecrimecommunity #truecrimepodcast #crime #murder #podcast #truecrimeaddict #serialkiller #serialkillers #truecrimejunkie #horror #unsolved #murderino #podcastersofinstagram #truecrimeobsessed #mystery #ssdgm #truecrimefan #killer #truecrimememes #unsolvedmysteries #creepy #paranormal #podcasts #history #tedbundy #criminal #scary #podcasting #coldcase #murdermystery #bookstagram #death #buzzfeedunsolved #crimescene #truecrimepodcasts #missingperson #missing #halloween #crimejunkie #news #myfavoritemurder #spooky #supernatural #truecrimestories #homicide #ryanbergara #shanemadej #murderer #podcaster #truecrimebooks #memes #spotify #podernfam #history #Beverly #mafia #beverlyhils #truecrime #tedbundy #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #truecrimememes #killers #killer #murder

It was the former president's first event since the assassination attempt on him Sunday afternoon. 3:15pm- According to internal polling, members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters heavily favor Donald Trump over Kamala Harris—58% to 36%. On Wednesday, union leadership announced they would not be endorsing either candidate. It's the first time the International Brotherhood of Teamsters has opted out of endorsing a presidential candidate since 1996. In 2020, they supported Joe Biden—and have historically endorsed Democrats. 3:20pm- While speaking in Flint, Michigan on Tuesday night, Donald Trump vowed to bring automotive manufacturing back to the United States. During the event, one Michigan automaker hilariously told the former president he had been to a Trump rally before and that he didn't leave early, and no one fell asleep—refuting baseless claims made by Kamala Harris during last week's debate. 3:30pm- Doug Collins—Former U.S. Congressman and Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee—joins The Rich Zeoli Show and reacts to news that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters will refuse to endorse a presidential candidate. Plus, Collins says he doesn't trust Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to protect the U.S. Southern border or former president Donald Trump—particularly after two assassination attempts in roughly two months. He notes that the Biden Administration should have fired Mayorkas long ago. Collins now serves as a Senior Advisor for the America First Policy Institute (AFPI). You can learn more about AFPI here: https://americafirstpolicy.com/about 3:50pm- Brand New Polling Data: One new poll from Gallup indicates Donald Trump has an advantage over Kamala Harris in favorability—46% to 44%. He also has an edge on favorability with Independent voters specifically, 44% to 34%. However, a new Quinnipiac poll shows Harris is beating Trump 51% to 46% in Pennsylvania—though, it seems to be an outlier. 4:05pm- Fed Cuts Interest Rates by Half a Percentage Point. Nick Timiraos of The Wall Street Journal writes: “The Federal Reserve voted to lower interest rates by a half percentage point, opting for a bolder start in making its first reduction since 2020. The long-anticipated pivot followed an all-out fight against inflation the central bank launched two years ago. Eleven of 12 Fed voters backed the cut, which will bring the benchmark federal-funds rate to a range between 4.75% and 5%. Quarterly projections released Wednesday showed a narrow majority of officials penciled in cuts that would lower rates by at least a quarter point each at meetings in November and December.” You can read the full article here: https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/fed-cuts-rates-by-half-percentage-point-03566d82 4:20pm- While speaking to the press after announcing a 0.50% interest rate cut, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said: “The U.S. economy is in a good place and our decision today is designed to keep it there.” Though, he stopped short of saying the Fed was ready to declare victory over inflation. 4:30pm- Dr. EJ Antoni—Research Fellow in The Heritage Foundation's Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget—joins The Rich Zeoli Show and reacts to the Federal Reserve slashing interest rates right before the presidential election. Was it done for political reasons? And will it have an impact on the 2024 election? 4:40pm- The ladies of The View have suggested Brittany Mahomes is racist for expressing support for Donald Trump. Plus, on CSPAN's Washington Journal a viewer named Willie, from Louisiana, outlandishly advocated for assassinating Donald Trump. 4:45pm- Linda Kerns—Attorney & Election Integr ...
