In this moving episode of Talking Insomnia, we meet Zach, who shares a powerful transformation from a state of "enormous struggle" to a life where insomnia is simply no longer on his mind. Zach's journey is a profound example of what happens when we move beyond traditional "sleep hygiene" and standard CBT-I—which Zach found actually made his situation worse—and instead move toward true Insomnia Immunity. What you'll learn in this episode: The "Acceptance" Paradox: How Zach achieved one of his biggest life goals (getting into a special army unit) while in the midst of his struggle, proving that life doesn't have to stop when sleep is difficult. The Definition of Recovery: Zach explains the moment he realized he was recovered—not because he was sleeping perfectly, but because he "lost interest" in the topic entirely and stopped asking the question, "Am I better yet?" Facing the Root Cause: Why facing the fear of insomnia gave Zach the tools to face almost any other fear in life. Beyond the Struggle: How Zach went from feeling like a "different person" back to his true self. Zach's story is a testament to the fact that when you stop running and start meeting your fears differently, the thoughts that once consumed you eventually leave your mind completely. Berger highlights a pivotal moment in 2012 when SpaceX combined two test missions (C2 and C3) to save time, a risky move that required rewriting flight software while the vehicle was near the International Space Station to fix a sensor glitch. Simultaneously, the company faced an "existential" crisis following the 2015 CRS-7 launch failure. The conversation covers the historical emergence of Algeria as a political and territorial unit, starting in the Ottoman period in the 16th century. Key pivotal moments in Algerian history are highlighted, including French colonialism beginning in 1830, which led to a settler colonial project, the rise of the modern mass nationalist movement in the interwar period, the War of National Liberation (1954–1962), and the decade of violence in the 1990s. The latter half of the conversation focuses on the "Worlds of Islam," emphasizing a polycentric history with no single center. A historian, professor at the University of Oxford, and author of books "A History of Algeria" and "The Worlds of Islam: A Global History", James McDougall details the diverse "technologies" of Islam's spread, including its compelling initial mission, the appeal of social mobility for non-Arabs, trade networks, and the influence of Sufism. He also discusses the historical roots of Islamophobia, which is traced to the 19th-century colonial moment. He discusses why he was drawn to studying Algeria, a country he notes is often ignored in Middle East studies and is known as "the land of a million martyrs" for its iconic history of resistance to colonialism.  0:00 Introduction2:08 Intellectual Curiosity and Addressing Poor Understanding of the Region7:37 When Did Algeria Begin to Exist? One of the things I love most about building a brand is the opportunity to explore creative projects beyond my core offering. Whether it's a podcast, a book, or a YouTube channel, these projects allow us to share our work in new and exciting ways.  That's why I'm so excited to share my conversation with Izzy Poirier and Caroline Sarrette, the brilliant minds behind the Ottawa and New York Design Clubs. In this episode, we go behind the scenes on their latest collaborative project: a beautifully designed zine. We discuss the entire process, from the initial idea during the pandemic to navigating difficult printers and securing sponsorship. Izzy and Caroline share candidly about the struggles of managing a huge project with lots of collaborators, but also the incredible benefits and sense of community it has brought them. If you've ever thought about launching a creative project to showcase your work, you're going to love this episode.  Key Takeaways Passion Projects Fuel Your Brand: Running the design club and creating a zine has been a huge undertaking, but it has directly influenced Izzy's business, helping her define her niche in community building and bringing her new client work. Embrace the "Silent Work": A finished zine or a successful event looks effortless, but it's built on a mountain of unseen work, from endless email outreach to speaker rehearsals and logistical planning. It's the underlying passion for the project that keeps you motivated through the long hours.  Challenges Build Resilience: Every hurdle, from finding the right speakers to navigating a tense negotiation with a printer that changed a quote by 50%, is a lesson. Overcoming this friction is what improves your processes and makes you stronger. Print Creates Tangible Community: The zine began during the pandemic as a way to archive creativity happening during lockdown. It has since become a tangible way to showcase artists, create conversations, and even help contributors land jobs. Episode Highlights 05:47: Izzy explains how starting the Ottawa Design Club at the exact same time as her freelance business was a strategic move to build a network and find her niche. 10:04: Discover how the zine began during the pandemic to create a repertoire of the amazing creativity happening in isolation, and how the first edition sold out in just three days. 17:10: Caroline discusses the specific challenges of building a community in a city like New York, including cutting through the noise to find speakers and sourcing affordable venues. 27:53: Izzy shares the incredibly intense story of a sponsorship deal with a printer going wrong, how she navigated a tense negotiation, and the importance of standing your ground for your community. 34:59: Learn about the theme of the latest zine, "Pivotal Moments", which explores the career-defining shifts that creatives experience and aims to inspire readers to embrace change. Justin Bieber BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Justin Bieber finds himself at a pivotal moment both professionally and personally as summer 2025 closes. The release of his seventh studio album Swag continues to make waves, debuting last month at No 2 on the Billboard 200 and spawning hit singles like Daisies and most recently Yukon. According to WAVT, Bieber just dropped the much-anticipated black-and-white music video for Yukon, which was shot across Spain and Italy and prominently features his wife Hailey and their infant son Jack Blues. Directed by Cole Bennett, the video is already fueling a new TikTok trend and turning up across Instagram, highlighting Bieber's knack for staying on top of social culture. While fans are eager for a supporting tour, media outlets like Us Weekly and 6PR Perth report persistent rumors of a possible Australia leg—yet, Rolling Stone confirms that Bieber's camp has not announced tour dates and that previous health concerns, specifically his Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis, still loom large when it comes to live performances. His last world tour was famously canceled, and a number of sources close to the singer told Page Six that he faces a crossroads deciding whether to return to global touring or focus on family life, especially as Hailey's Rhode Beauty was just acquired for $1 billion, solidifying her status as a major business force.Offstage, Bieber made headlines by reaching a substantial $31.5 million settlement with former manager Scooter Braun, ending years of reported financial dispute catalyzed by the cancellation of the Justice World Tour. People confirmed that Bieber's payment covers both tour advances and unpaid commissions. This settlement punctuates broader reporting, including a spring documentary and comments from sources close to the star, emphasizing that the past two years have tested Bieber's financial management and strained some of his inner circle relationships. In the world of fashion, the singer is turning heads with his upcoming brand Skylrk, teasing bright apparel and accessories across his social media—with notable nods to Hailey's Rhode phone cases. Bieber was also seen courtside with Hailey at The League X Blem basketball event late in August, with Just Jared chronicling their affectionate appearance and the buzz it sparked online, from candid PDA to Justin sporting Skylrk-branded gear. Together, they've re-emerged as pop culture's most-watched power couple, their collective worth soaring after Hailey's mega-deal.As the Yukon video racks up streams and Skylrk speculation mounts, it looks like Bieber's next chapter may be as much about family, fashion, and social reinvention as music—though with him, nothing ever stays static for long.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

"When things are going well, it's exciting. When they're not, you don't know where the bottom is."In this episode, entrepreneur, author, and developer Jose Berlanga and I discuss navigating complexity and leadership lessons learned from childhood adversity and many years of leading through high-stakes moments. We specifically discuss the importance of calculated risk-taking, building resilient teams, creating contingency plans, and the difference between leadership under pressure and micromanaging out of fear. In high-stakes moments, success often hinges not on avoiding risk, but on knowing which ones are worth taking, and leading with conviction when the path forward is unclear.Key Takeaways:--> Discomfort is ConstantLeading through difficulty isn't an exception—it's the norm, especially in entrepreneurship.--> Risk as a Way of LifeEarly adversity can build resilience; successful leaders develop a tolerance for discomfort and pressure.--> Preparation > PredictionContingency planning is critical. Leaders can't afford denial or false optimism in crisis moments.--> Delegation is a SkillLet go of tasks incrementally, starting with repetitive, non-critical areas. Avoid micromanaging.--> Team PowerBuild a proactive team that can think and act independently. Leadership shifts you from doing to coordinating.--> Short-Term vs. Long-Term ThinkingIn crises, long-term strategy narrows to survival mode—prioritize urgent, essential tasks. This episode will help you navigate those complex, high-stakes moments with more clarity, confidence, and ease. Are you living your career by design—or just letting it happen to you? Do you know what your ideal day as a dentist looks like? What about your ideal week? In this episode, Jaz is joined by Dr. Andrea Ogden to explore how you can design a career—and a life—in dentistry that feels purposeful and fulfilling. They dive into why many of us get stuck on autopilot, chasing goals we've never truly chosen, and how to break free by aligning work with your values.  Andrea also shares practical techniques to help you fall back in love with dentistry, so you can build a career that energises you—inside and outside the surgery. https://youtu.be/XDxlUFeEpbw Watch IC060 on Youtube Need to Read it? Choose Variety & Joy – Build a mix of roles that energise you, not just ones you're good at. Ditch the Comparison Game – Your journey is unique; stop measuring it against 15-year veterans on Instagram. Guard Your Values – Burnout often comes from a mismatch between what you believe in and where you work. Align the two. Create Space to Reflect – Slow down, think, and use SMART goals to plan your next step.  Find Your Tribe – Mentors, colleagues, and community will keep you inspired and resilient. Celebrate the Wins – Small or big, they're proof you're moving forward. Loved this conversation? Send us a textHave you ever faced a moment when everything you were working toward seemed to hit a wall? That intersection of disappointment and decision is exactly what we're diving into today as we explore the powerful concepts of pivoting and rebounding.Life rarely follows a straight line. Dreams get derailed, plans fall apart, and sometimes what seemed like the perfect path suddenly becomes impassable. But what if these moments aren't failures but invitations to something better? Drawing from our own journey through cancer, ministry transitions, and business pivots, we share how to discern when it's time to change direction versus when to push through resistance. The principle is simple yet profound: evaluate fruitfulness. Has what you've been doing produced the results you hoped for? If not, perhaps it's time for a strategic pivot. This doesn't mean abandoning your vision—it means finding a better route to get there. As we discuss in this episode, sometimes what appears to be a roadblock is actually divine redirection toward something greater than you initially imagined.Equally important is the art of rebounding after failure. Your past is just a chapter, not your whole story. Many of the most successful people attribute their greatest achievements to lessons learned through their biggest disappointments. What if your current setback is actually setting you up for your greatest comeback? The enemy of both pivoting and rebounding is a victim mentality. When we see ourselves as victims of circumstances rather than overcomers through Christ, we surrender our power to write the next chapter. Developing what we playfully call a "Scrappy" mentality—that determined spirit that refuses to stay down—positions you for victory regardless of what you're facing.Whether you're considering a change in your career, ministry, relationships, or personal development, this conversation will equip you with practical wisdom to navigate life's inevitable transitions with courage and faith.
