The doctor is in, please take a seat. We're joined in person by hilarious and universally beloved friend of the show, the wickedly talented vocalist/guitarist of PITY SEX: Dr. Britty Drake. We go into great detail about Britty's expulsion from high school due to a (joke) violent threat on Myspace and the extensive aftermath, her upbringing from young Christian Metalcore fan experimenting with many haircuts in Lansing, MI to Indie Shoegaze pioneer extensively touring the country, taking a break from music to become a literal DOCTOR of the mind, balancing work and home life with her husband/bandmate Mike, playing live with Pity Sex in 2025 & beyond and much, much, more!A truly delightful episode with our great friend that we had as much fun recording as we did watching it back. Pity Sex is here to stay, baby! “Before starting a new AI project, it is really worthwhile defining the business priority first,” asserts Joanna Hodgson, the UK and Ireland regional leader at Red Hat.“What specific problem are you trying to solve with AI? Do we need a general purpose AI application or would a more focused model be better? How will we manage security, compliance and governance of that model? This process can help to reveal where AI adoption makes sense and where it doesn't," she added. In this episode of the Tech Transformed podcast, host Shubhangi Dua, podcast producer at EM360Tech speaks with Hodgson, a seasoned business and technical leader with over 25 years of experience at IBM and Red Hat. They talk about the challenges of scaling AI projects, the importance of open source in compliance with GDPR, and the geopolitical aspects of AI innovation. They also discuss the role of small language models (SLMs) in enterprise applications and the collaboration between IBM and Red Hat in advancing AI technology. Joanna emphasises the need for a strategic approach to AI and the importance of data quality for sustainable business practices. While large language models (LLMs) dominate headlines, SLMs offer a cost-effective and efficient alternative for specific tasks. The podcast answers key questions, like ‘how do businesses balance ethical considerations, moral obligations, and even patriotism with the drive for AI advancement?' Hodgson shares her perspective on how open source can facilitate this balance, ensuring AI works for everyone, not just those with the deepest pockets.Hodgson also provides her vision on the future of AI. It comprises interconnected small AI models, agentic AI, and a world where AI frees up teams to create personal connections and exceptional customer experiences.TakeawaysCuriosity is a strength in technology.AI is becoming embedded in existing applications.Regulatory compliance is crucial for AI systems.Open source can enhance trust and transparency.Small language models are efficient for specific tasks.AI should free teams to create personal connections.A strategic AI platform is essential for businesses.Data quality is key for sustainable business success.Collaboration in open source accelerates innovation.AI can be used for both good and bad outcomes.Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Tech Transform Podcast01:35 Pivotal Moments in Joanna's Career05:12 Challenges in Scaling AI Projects09:15 Open Source and GDPR Compliance13:11 Regulatory Compliance and Data Security17:30 Geopolitical Aspects of AI Innovation22:31 Collaboration Between IBM and Red Hat23:58 Understanding Small Language Models29:54 Future Trends in AI and SustainabilityAbout Red HatRed Hat is a leading provider of enterprise open source solutions, using a community-powered approach to deliver high-performing Linux, hybrid cloud, edge, and Kubernetes technologies. Gahhhhh it's the 100th episode of artchatter. Who knew? So here we are doing something a little different in celebration. Three-ish years, two artists and one question for four (technically five, but for aesthetics) people who inspire us… What's the question? Simple. Did you have a pivotal moment in your career?A significant moment where something clicked, you grabbed an opportunity or had a realisation that you were on to something. Conversely, when you finally decided things had to change. Although everyone had a different story and perspective, there are so many relatable feelings and emotions for all of us.Once again we would like to thank the lovely women who shared their moments. We've watched them online for such a long time, and all feel like we know them, so it's lovely to hear from them

In the summer of 2011, paleontologist and science writer Riley Black was on a mission. Walking through the Montana desert, she was on the lookout for a Tyrannosaurus rex. But that day, she wasn't having any luck. Sitting atop a rock, she pulled out a geological hammer, sometimes called a rock pick, to dislodge a little piece and try to discern its composition. What she saw was a leaf, but upon closer inspection realized it was in fact the fossil of a leaf. As it turned out, finding it likely provided so much more information than if she had come across the dinosaur. In this episode of Tiny Matters, we explore the complex and essential relationship between plants and animals across evolution and some of the pivotal moments that allowed humans to exist and that led to the world we live in today. In this episode, we journey through the fascinating and often surprising history of Scotland Yard, the iconic home of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). Inspired by last week's episode about the haunting tales of the Tower of London, we shift focus to uncover the evolution of law enforcement in London. From the chaotic days of watchmen during the 18th century gin craze to the formation of the Bow Street Runners and ultimately Sir Robert Peel's revolutionary vision for modern policing, we explore how the MPS came to be.But history isn't always pretty, and neither is policing. Alongside the famed rooftop firing ranges and Houdini escapades, we dive into controversies and tragedies, from the wrongful shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes to the horrific murder of Sarah Everard by a serving officer. We discuss how these events have shaped public perception of the force and the reforms still needed today.Along the way, we share quirky anecdotes about Scotland Yard's Black Museum, rooftop firing ranges, and connections to the Beatles. Plus, you'll hear about trailblazing figures like Edith Smith, the UK's first female officer with arrest powers, and the challenges she faced during World War I. Come along with us as discuss:The Origins of Policing in London: From the medieval constables and watchmen to the Bow Street Runners and their drunken escapades.Scotland Yard's Iconic History: Why it's called Scotland Yard (spoiler: it has nothing to do with Scotland), its evolution, and its global cultural impact. The Quirks of Crime Fighting: Tales from the Black Museum and a few blunders, including a painting heist that left Scotland Yard red-faced.Pivotal Moments in Policing: How the world wars, the development of forensics, and societal shifts influenced Scotland Yard's role and structure.Women in Policing: The trailblazing work of Edith Smith and the shift toward gender equality in law enforcement roles.Controversies and Tragedies: The cases of Jean Charles de Menezes and Sarah Everard and their lasting impacts on public trust and police accountability.Whether you're a history buff, a true-crime aficionado, or someone fascinated by the inner workings of iconic institutions, this episode offers a deep dive into the stories that shaped one of the most recognized police forces in the world. Air Date 9/13/2024 We've been living through the modern equivalent of the oil boom, back when poking a hole in the ground would make one of the world's most valuable substances, upon which entire economies would be built. But in our case, it's not oil, it's data. Now we are at a pivotal moment as the old unchallenged master of data, Google, has been found guilty of illegal anti-competitive behavior at the same time as generative AI companies are in a new desperate rush to stake claims on every last piece of data they can find.
