In September 1777, just fourteen months after declaring independence, Philadelphia fell to the British Army. For nearly nine months, the new nation's capital was occupied territory. But what did that actually mean for the people who lived there? Not the generals, not the Congress: ordinary Philadelphians who had to decide whether to flee or stay, share their homes with British officers, watch their fences get chopped up for firewood, and figure out which neighbors to trust when it was all over. In this episode, Aaron Sullivan, a professor of History at Rider University, George Boudreau, a public historian and Executive Director of the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion Museum in Germantown, PA, and historical interpreter Kalela Williams, now the Director of the Virginia Center for the Book, take us inside occupied Philadelphia. Together, they reveal how a city that was never fully committed to independence experienced nine months of British rule, and what the occupation cost everyone who lived through it: Quaker women negotiating with soldiers at their back gates, merchants whose fortunes rose on British hard currency while their neighbors went hungry, and Black Philadelphians who looked at the upheaval and asked whether it might open a door to freedom. Plus: the most extravagant party thrown in eighteenth-century America, staged while the city's almshouses overflowed. Show Notes: https://www.benfranklinsworld.com/332RECOMMENDED NEXT EPISODES
When Dylan Carnahan interviewed Marvin Cotton Jr., an exoneree little did he know it would lead to an interest in criminal justice, righting wrongs and the creation of an app aimed at helping those wrongfully imprisoned. It was that interview on Dylan's Carnahan's Simple Questions podcast, that Marvin explained he spent 20 years in prison for a murder he did not commit and the tough road that exonerees face when they are finally released from prison. That led to not only a friendship with Cotton, who is the founder of the Organization of Exonerees, but also a collaboration with Carnahan's brother, Alex Provenzano, a software engineer, to develop an app aimed at easing the transition from prison life to civilian life for those wrongly incarcerated. Cotton was arrested, charged and received a life sentence in 2001 for first-degree murder—a crime he did not commit. When he was exonerated, he was released into a completely new world that he didn't know how to navigate. Dylan and Marvin kept in touch for months after they recorded the episode, texting and calling each other frequently. As he and Cotton got closer, Carnahan came up with the APP idea. Dylan explains, "When you hear Marvin's story and you hear the story of the other exonerees, it's a very compelling call to action," he says. Other exonerees that they collaborated with are Kenneth Nixon, Eric Anderson, Anthony 'Ace Law' Legion, Darrell Siggers, and Leon Benson The picture includes from left to right Alex Provenzano (Dylan's brother) Marvin Cotton Jr. and Dylan Carnahan

The British Army is at your door. They need a room. What do you do? For thousands of civilians living in cities occupied during the American War for Independence — Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Newport, Charleston, Savannah — this wasn't a hypothetical. It was a reality that upended daily life and revealed a side of the revolution we rarely talk about. Lauren Duval, author of The Home Front: Revolutionary Households, Military Occupations, and the Making of American Independence, joins us to explore what the War for Independence actually looked like from inside the household. Women who negotiated quartering terms and held their ground. Men who came to blows over who controlled the parlor. Enslaved people who used the chaos of occupation to reunite families and reach British lines. The revolution didn't just happen on battlefields. It happened at kitchen tables, in back gardens, and on doorsteps.Lauren's Website | Book |Show Notes: https://www.benfranklinsworld.com/403 EPISODE OUTLINE00:00:00 Introduction00:01:38 The Home Front of the American Revolution00:05:24 The Gensis of the Revolutionary Household00:10:49 Why Focus on Urban Port Cities00:19:46 The British Occupation's Impact on City Life00:25:55 Quartering a British Officer: The Drinker Household00:33:38. In Round 103 of the Tactical Transition Tips on the Transition Drill Podcast, some mornings you wake up and you're already behind, not on tasks, but in your head. The list isn't a list anymore. It's a pile. Career decisions collide with money decisions. Money decisions collide with family pressure. Family pressure collides with location, timing, and the question you keep dodging: what happens when your current lane ends. This episode is about transition overload, what it actually is, how it sneaks in, and why it's dangerous even when you're still performing well. Transition overload isn't being busy. It's too many major decisions competing for the same mental space at the same time. When that happens, you don't just feel tired. Your judgment gets less accurate. You start bouncing between tasks, chasing quick relief instead of clear outcomes. You either rush decisions to collapse the pile, avoid decisions by staying in research mode, or do a little of everything and finish nothing. The point here isn't to grind harder. It's to protect decision quality. Because the quiet risk of overload is the quiet decision. The one you make just to reduce uncertainty. The one that turns into a path you didn't fully choose. This episode breaks down the difference between pressure with order and pressure without order, and why the second one feels endless. It also gives you three practical moves based on your timeline, so you can keep your transition deliberate instead of reactive.Close Range Group (transitioning within a year): Sequence Your Transition, Don't Pile It.Pick one primary lane for the next 60 to 90 days and put everything else in maintenance mode so you stop burning bandwidth on competing priorities.Medium Range Group (transitioning in 3 to 5 years): Reassess Your “Wish” List.Write out the expectations you've been carrying and renegotiate what still fits so you don't build a future plan around an outdated version of yourself.Long Range Group (transitioning in a decade or more): Put Buffers in Place to Avoid Panic Choices.Build financial, skill, and personal buffers now so future decisions don't get made under threat when timelines change fast.If you've felt friction instead of focus, this episode will help you spot what's happening and slow the pile down before it shrinks your options.Get additional resources and join our newsletter via the link in the show notes.CONNECT WITH THE PODCAST:IG: https://www.instagram.com/paulpantani/WEBSITE: https://www.transitiondrillpodcast.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulpantani/SIGN-UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER:https://transitiondrillpodcast.com/home#aboutQUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:paul@transitiondrillpodcast.comSPONSORS:Frontline OpticsGet 10% off your purchaseLink: https://frontlineoptics.comPromocode: Transition10GRND CollectiveGet 15% off your purchaseLink: https://thegrndcollective.com/Promo Code: TRANSITION15
This episode pulls back the curtain on daily life inside a country under siege. From a darkened apartment in Kyiv, Ukrainian Member of Parliament and mother Halyna Yanchenko describes nights without electricity, heat, water, or internet. Elevators stop. Food cannot be cooked. Homes go cold. This is not a war fought only on front lines or maps. It is a deliberate campaign aimed at civilians, families, and children, designed to exhaust, frighten, and break a society from the inside out. In her own words, Yanchenko explains what it means to raise children in darkness, and why Ukraine says this is not just war, but an attempt to erase civilian life itself.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

How have young people in rural areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo invented new forms of radicalism in response to the impact of new flows of foreign investment and the inability of normal national and international politics to serve their needs and interests? Zachariah Mampilly explains how rural and urban spaces have seen a complex transit of peoples and funds that complicate politics, and emergent forms of radical activism have taken root and spread in many African countries. These forms display important re-imaginings of power sharing and revolutionary praxis.Zachariah Mampilly is the Marxe Endowed Chair of International Affairs at the Marxe School of Public and International Affairs, CUNY and a member of the doctoral faculty in the Department of Political Science at the Graduate Center, CUNY. He is the Co-Founder of the Program on African Social Research. Previously, he was Professor of Political Science and Director of the Africana Studies Program at Vassar College. Service members encounter major challenges when transitioning to civilian life, such as identifying transferable skills and experiencing a loss of purpose. The shift from a structured military environment creates confusion and uncertainty about the future. Many seek further education for clarity, but this often only postpones the inevitable. Adjusting expectations is crucial, as civilian jobs typically do not replicate the excitement of military experiences.https://greencastleconsulting.com➡️ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/greencastleconsulting ➡️ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/1997GACPhiladelphia, Malvern, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Atlantic City, Wilmington, Washington D.C.

In Part 3: Kyle Steiner explains how "Comfort and Progress, don't live in the same home." Combat, war and pushing your body to the extreme may seem uncomfortable to most, but were areas where Kyle felt at home. With retirement from the Army fast approaching, Kyle opens about what he finds uncomfortable in civilian life and how he needs to push past that initial hesitation in order to be the man that his children will be proud to call their father. There are no excuses for mediocrity and in this final installment of The Present Father's Interview with Kyle Steiner, he explains that he plans on taking on civilian life, fatherhood and any other future challenges with the same gusto that he approached his time in the military. About Kyle Steiner: Kyle is a husband and father, a U.S. Army Green Beret, Chief Warrant Officer, and the founder of Operator Mindset—a leadership and coaching platform helping highly successful men reclaim discipline, presence, and purpose in their lives. Shortly after joining the Army in 2005, he served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in what is widely regarded as one of the most kinetic deployments ever during the Global War on Terror and was featured in the acclaimed documentaries "Restrepo" and "Korengal." Kyle was actually shot in the head on this deployment but survived the harrowing experience. Since then, he has completed multiple missions to the Middle East, Central America, and South America with U.S. Special Operations teams. He is the recipient of 2 Purple Hearts and 3 Bronze Stars as well as an ARCOM with V Device. He is Ranger-qualified, Combat Diver-qualified, HALO-certified, and a graduate of the Special Forces Sniper Course. Beau Hughes – HF Sinclair: Corporate Procurement Leader It was an absolute pleasure to have my good friend, Beau Hughes, join me on the PCS to Corporate America Podcast. Beau works for HF Sinclair as a Procurement Supervisor in their Corporate Procurement team. Find out how Beau went from JMO to Corporate Procurement Leader in our latest podcast. Beau was one of the first JMOs I had the opportunity to work with when I joined Cameron-Brooks in 2023. Since then, we've grown close, and I've enjoyed watching him build a successful life and career after the Army. A former U.S. Army Logistics Officer, Beau launched his corporate career in November 2023 with HF Sinclair in Tulsa, OK. Right after accepting the offer through the November 2023 Career Conference, Beau and his wife welcomed their son into the world. Since then, things haven't slowed down. Within his first year, Beau earned a promotion and returned to a Career Conference as a hiring manager, where he hired another Cameron-Brooks Alumnus. Beau's transition from the Army to a rising leader in corporate procurement is full of lessons for junior military officers. His story is inspiring, practical, and worth hearing. Transitioning to Civilian Life with Purpose With a baby on the way and a strong desire to be more present at home, Beau made the decision to leave the Army in early 2023. Like many officers, he started the job search on his own and quickly saw how challenging it can be to navigate the civilian hiring process. That's when a friend pointed him to Cameron-Brooks. After connecting with our team in August, Beau attended the November 2023 Career Conference and landed a Procurement Specialist role with HF Sinclair. “Cameron-Brooks made the process easy. I just had to show up prepared.” Redefining Procurement: Strategy Over Purchasing At HF Sinclair, Beau learned quickly that procurement is far more strategic than most people think. “I get a little offended when people call it purchasing. We're building partnerships to achieve the lowest total cost of ownership, not just buying stuff.” His responsibilities include managing sourcing events, writing contracts, and being a strategic partner to internal teams. He found success quickly, even leading one of the smoothest refinery turnarounds in the company's recent history. Earning a Promotion and Managing Life Transitions The first year wasn't easy, but it was worth it. In March 2025, a little over a year after starting, Beau was promoted to Procurement Supervisor and relocated to El Dorado, Kansas. Despite a steep learning curve and the demands of a new role, Beau felt supported throughout the process. “You're not just thrown to the wolves. You're challenged, yes, but supported the whole way.” During this time, Beau also navigated becoming a new dad, moving states, and buying a home. He also mentioned the value of having more predictability in his schedule. He's not necessarily working less, but he has more control. Beau's Advice for JMOs Beau had some solid advice for fellow officers considering a move to business: Be hungry and humble – Learn fast, ask questions, and show up ready to work. Own your learning – No one's handing you a manual. Be proactive. Stay authentic – Companies want the real you, not a script. Trust the process – The Cameron-Brooks program works if you do the work. “It's not instant gratification, but it works. You just have to grind, learn, and grow.” What Makes Cameron-Brooks Candidates Stand Out? Now that Beau is a hiring manager, he sees firsthand the quality of Cameron-Brooks candidates: They're prepared. They present themselves well. They're confident, not arrogant. They're genuine. Beau shared a story about a candidate who wore a suit to a casual interview. He didn't have to, but it made a lasting impression. Final Thoughts: Growth, Grit, and Giving Back
