We're so grateful Janos Marton joined us on the podcast this week! “Janos Marton is a born and raised New Yorker. He has spent his career fighting for racial justice and taking on corruption – as a civil rights lawyer, special counsel to the Moreland Commission to Investigate Corruption, and as attorney investigating police misconduct for the City of New York. In 2016 he was named the first advocacy director of JustLeadershipUSA, where he managed the historic #CLOSErikers campaign. He then ran criminal justice programs across the country for the ACLU. As a candidate for Manhattan District Attorney in 2020, Janos ran on a bold platform to use prison as a last resort, receiving praise for groundbreaking policies that became the gold standard in the race.” You're going to love this amazing, damn-giving human. As an experienced civil rights lawyer and long-time humanizer, Janos Marton is an influential and respected leader in safety and justice work nationally. His commentary on the discussion between reform and abolition is an excellent way to better understand the complexity of the issue. But don't let it be the whole story for you. Juan José Gutiérrez, immigration lawyer, executive director of the Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition, talks to us about how the Biden administration is punting on immigration reform, how it did not feature prominently during his speech, whether it is still a priority for this administration, and whether the initial positive steps taken will survive in Congress. We also talk about a Supreme Court case that resulted in a small victory for an undocumentent immigrant and whether this could have a larger effect for other immigrants in the country.Erin Kirk Cuomo, co-founder of Not In My Marine Corps, joins us in a conversation about annual defense policy in the Senate that will likely be vehicle to enact an overhaul of how sexual assault is handled within the military, whether its proposals will have a real impact on the issue, whether there is a cultural component in the military that enables theses assaults, and whether the pandemic is a factor in the rise of sexual assaults in the military. Janos Marton, National Director of Dream Corps Justice, tells us about the inhumane conditions and overcrowding of inmates at the St. Louis jail in pre-trial detention with some detainees spending years in jail without a court hearing, the structural and political foundations for indeterminate detention, how the voices of detainees are not heard in the mainstream media, and what other alternatives could be available to mass incarceration for individuals awaiting trial. Ted Rall, award winning political cartoonist, columnist, and author, joins hosts Michelle Witte and Bob Schlehuber to talk about how basic goods are becoming more expensive as we get out of the pandemic, and how corporations justify these price increases without taking into account the financial toll on working families. We also talk about how federal aid to renters is being held back due to bureaucratic roadblocks, how Amazon is raising some wages for workers and still fear the threat of unionization, and revelations that the USAID humanitarian relief provided to Venezuela in 2019 was intended to bolster the opposition led by Juan Guaidó.

Running for any public office feels terrifying. It's a motivation made for a very special type of human. A dash of madness, coupled with an unyielding call to fight for what is right + need for little sleep, seems the fate of candidates running for any office. Running for district attorney in one of the world's most scrutinized cities a.k.a Manhattan, is next level gutsy. It requires the stealth of a madman, driven by the lifeblood of virtuosity. In a city as fiscally conservative as it is left-wing progressive, a candidate certainly has their work cut out for them to read the proverbial room and walk with the desires of a myriad of stakeholders. Enter in Janos Marton who has spent his career as a NYC civil rights attorney, activist and organizer, pushing for the hand of true justice. He rose to prominence through his work with the ACLU, working to shut down Rikers and in the mix during the Occupy Wall Street movement. Driven by his passion for equity, criminal justice reform and taking a progressive lens to current approaches, he comes with a much needed proactive point of view. Janos took on Gov. Cuomo a few years ago when he tried to shut down an internal investigative commission aimed at slashing corruption. He's ready to take on long-term incumbent Cy Vance and the other 8 candidates heavily eyeballing this coveted spot. Why? Because Janos has constructed a plan to address mass incarceration in Manhattan and systemically gut it from the inside out. On this episode, we discuss many of the hot-button topics surrounding the 2021 primary. We discuss slashing upcoming DA budgets in a post-Covid world, de-carcerating Manhattan by 80% during his potential term, approaches to drugs, sex work and low-level crime prosecution, gun control and campaign financing. All areas that hit Manhattan, but have firm tentacles throughout the US. Janos breaks down what it means to be a DA, from the day-to-day issues, to scoping near and long-term strategies that will make Manhattan a better place to live and work. Host, Rae speaks with candidate for District Attorney of Manhattan, Janos Marton on the topic that the entire country is talking about right now (whether you like it or not)...Defunding the police. Janos also talks on things such as police reform, prison reform, his current campaign and much more. Note from Host: Hello from the past - in the year 2020, despite the world being on lockdown due to a global pandemic, people all around the country (self included) finally left their homes to fight against racial injustices in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement. No but really, these past few months have seemed like something out of a movie, and definitely not a rom-com. But the sad truth is that Black people and BIPOC have been fighting this fight all their lives. I hope if you're white and you're reading this, your ill informed brainwashed AP History teacher hasn't fooled you, America has never not been racist. Just about every institution this country has built, was built on a racist system. If you don't believe me please refer back to the episode before this one entitled "Are All White People Racist?". Now let's talk "Defunding the Police". Listen, what's going on right now isn't about you're friendly uncle who's a cop. To be frank with you, it took me a second to get that out of my head because guess what, I have a friendly cop uncle. This is about the racist institution and system the Police force was built on in the first place. As of today, June 12th, 2020, Breonna Taylor's murderers are still on active duty as cops. If you don't know, Breonna Taylor was in bed, sleeping, when three cops murdered her in her own home. As Keith Ellison, Attorney General of Minneapolis said after the murder of George Floyd "There needs to be deep systemic change." That change comes from the very top (and protest of course), with voting for people like Janos Marton. I wanted to thank him for speaking to me in these trying times, and wish him the best in his campaign (he has my vote). Janos Marton is taking on longtime Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance who has served as DA for over a decade. He has led the effort to close the infamous Rikers Island jails and referring to his opponent as ‘the city’s leading jailer.’ Marton is a leading organizer in the New York City decarceration movement. This week he has joined the call for Mr. Vance to resign in light of criticism for decisions by his office that seemed to favor powerful defendants such as Jeffrey Epstein and Harvey Weinstein. Mr. Marton has an ambitious goal of reducing the number of citizens in Manhattan jails by 80 percent while also ending the war on drugs, creating fairness in sentencing and protecting immigrants. Janos Marton talked with Everyday Injustice this week about progressive prosecution and what he would add to the growing movement across the nation. The nationwide prison strike that began August 21 is ongoing, and it comes at a moment when Americans are perhaps primed to hear demands from prisoners and consider them in a new way. Protests and uprisings in recent years have called attention to the rampant inequality perpetuated by prisons, jails, arrests, and prosecutions, and as prisoners coordinate with each other to resist their conditions on the inside, Janos Marton of the ACLU's Smart Justice program joins me to talk about what people on the outside can do to support the strike and the demands of the prisoners.  People have been asking me what they can tangibly do. The organizers made clear in the lead-up to this strike that they weren’t expecting people on the outside to be able to do a whole lot to actually support the strike as it is happening because it is something that is facility specific and driven by and organized on the inside. But they made a few exceptions. One is to the extent that there are protests being held outside of facilities, they said that it not only gives them energy and hope when they see people protesting in solidarity outside of their own facilities, but it also generally causes Corrections to think twice before retaliating, which is a major concern we had as an organization in the lead-up to the strike--that the organizers of the strike are going to be retaliated against either during or after the strike is over. The people can participate in local actions, that makes a big difference. There is a Twitter account @IWW_IWOC which has been posting updates from the strike and occasional calls to action, usually around this issue saying something like, “Call such and such facility to make it clear to them not to retaliate against people participating in the prison strike.” Just continuing to amplify these messages. I think the idea that there is a prison strike and what the demands of the prison strike are are still not well understood to the broader public. So, the more people who are aware of these issues can do to amplify the ten demands and the fact that the strike is happening, then that is helpful, too. On a final note, when people read through the ten demands they may be surprised to see how many of them they already knew about and agreed with. Even though this is a radical act to strike in a prison setting and that is why we have to show such solidarity to these brave men and women, at the end of the day what they are asking for is very much in line with what people have been demanding for a very long time outside of prison walls, as well: an end to racist policing, investing in rehabilitation in the system rather than punishment, reducing the length of sentences, and ultimately this right to vote, this right to participate in democracy for all people.
