Does Being a Jesus Follower Embarrass You? Are the Holy Spirit and the Gospel on Your Life's “Back Burner” to Be Warmed Up Only in a Life Crisis? MESSAGE SUMMARY: Living in the Holy Spirit sets us apart from our fellow human beings who are living without the Christ. Most of us had great passion in our lives as we approached the age to get our driver's license or the age of eighteen when we would be an “adult”. Why don't we have the same kind of passion about our spiritual life? Why don't we want to grow up and mature in the Lord? As Paul tells us, in Titus2:11-13, we must focus on living a Godly life while, also, living our life in the Holy Spirit: “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.”. We have the capacity to live like no one else because we have presence of God in our lives through the person of the Holy Spirit and the gift of a personal relationship with God, the Creator of the Universe.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Abba Father, I admit that I am often afraid and embarrassed to openly tell you all that is going on inside me — even though I know you know it all anyway. Teach me what boldness in prayer looks like as I draw near your throne of grace. In Jesus' name, amen.         Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 112). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Resentment. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Compassion. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). The furore that has erupted over the impending budget cuts to basic education has uncovered how this will disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, exacerbating existing inequalities and undermining South Africa's Constitutional guarantee of the right to basic education. The major concerns highlighted so far include critical issues such as teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, and inadequate scholar transport and infrastructure. Little has been said about how the move will negatively affect the school nutrition programme. The Healthy Living Alliance - HEALA - is concerned for the programme, which provides 9 million school-going children with meals in poorer primary and secondary schools. The Alliance is now convening a conference to come up with solutions on how to strengthen and expand the school nutrition programme and ensure food justice for all children. Bongiwe Zwane spoke to HEALA head of communications, Zukiswa Zimela

Hey Friend,   Do you have a creative passion project?  You know... the one that's been sitting on the back burner, collecting dust, waiting for the right time to begin again?  The one that's been on your heart for quite some time now, but you keep pushing it aside for someday? Yeah, that one… I know because I have one, too!        Well, what would it be like to take it off the back burner and bring it into focus, into the foreground, and simply begin? Or begin again? Or just to get moving in that direction, gain some momentum, breathe new life into your sails?   If there has been something on your heart that you're wanting to create, my hope is that today's episode will serve as a catalyst for you to get moving again.  I pray that it will leave you with the inspiration you need to take that creative passion project of yours off the back burner so you can begin again with a renewed sense of vision, clarity, and strategy to make it happen.

Their voices were not popular, but were necessary. That was true then, and is still true today. In this final episode of Season Two, I work with Sarah as she explores the impact motherhood has had on her self-esteem and her career. Trained, as many women are, to put others first she now finds herself with an increasingly empty nest, time to spend on creative projects but a part of her that seems to sabotage this time. She has a novel to write but a mind full of limiting beliefs that stop her from being able to sit down and write.  With themes of co-dependency, empty nest adjustments and conflicting priorities this coaching conversation challenges the validity of the “shoulds” we live by and shows what happens when we start to see ourselves and our time in a new light. If you are struggling to give yourself time for creative projects here's what I suggest: 1. Put creative time in your diary, tell your family what you're doing and guard that time like you would a small baby 2. Do business with the part of your brain telling you that you're wasting time - you're a human being, not a human doing 3. Be accountable to someone for your creative progress - get a mentor, join a creative group etc. 4. Enjoy the process and remember this is far more about enjoying the experience of being creative than it is about the output.5. If you need to, take a class to improve your skills and confidence

Please don't go, Joe.  Please... just stay in the race until November!  America needs you to hang in there, stumble, bumble get angry and confuse world leaders.  Please scare us all and botch the border and don't worry about inflation until you're retired.  Please Joe, we're ok with a "well intentioned elderly man with poor memory."  What an historic day in America as we are watching a presidency crumble in real time.    The down side?  There's an easy plan for Obama and company to execute in the next few weeks that would almost certainly save the White House for them if they just want to do it.  I'll explain.    The Supreme Court heard the ridiculous argument from official in Colorado to keep Trump off the ballot and it did not go well for the Dems.  This could be headed for a 9-0 decision to KEEP Trump on the ballot.    Amazingly, Tucker Carlson's interview with Putin was only the third biggest story of the day... but it's a doozy.    And Lee Sterling of www.paramountsports.com joins us with all the fun Super Bowl prop bets including his daughter's money pick on the Star Spangled Banner.

No matter how hard we try to keep up with all of our commitments, things always end up on the back burner. Sadly, our relationship with God tends to be one of the first things we put on the back burner when life gets busy.   So what can we do to make sure God remains a priority in our lives when life gets busy? We can slow down and remember who God is.

Have you ever had the pleasure of waking up in a cozy cabin…after you've let the fire go out from the night before? If you don't get out of bed and put more wood in that furnace, the squirrels or raccoons aren't going to do it for you!   Much more serious is the tendency to get lazy about the fire inside us to share the love of Christ. After so many years of being a Christian—especially living in a free country—sharing the Gospel can be put on the back burner.   Romans 12:11–12 says, “Never let the fire in your heart go out. Keep it alive. Serve the Lord. When you hope, be joyful. When you suffer, be patient. When you pray, be faithful.”   Do you see what God is urging us to do in Scripture? He says to never let the fire go out! Never doesn't mean sometimes, when we're tired or annoyed about something. This is too important to mess up. Remember—Jesus saved you; more than likely, through someone keeping their own inner fire going, they saw you through the eyes of compassion.   Let's pray.   Lord, give us a passion for the souls of all people, at all times. And help us be ready to share Christ with them. In Jesus' name, amen.

DSO addresses a common issue faced by many men in long-term relationships: feeling neglected and pushed to the back burner after having children. He explains that this shift in attention and priorities is a natural result of motherhood and the demands of raising children. However, he acknowledges the valid need for intimacy and connection in a relationship and offers advice on how to address this issue.DSO emphasizes the importance of understanding the biological and societal factors at play, such as hormonal changes and cultural expectations. He suggests that creating a supportive social circle and seeking outside influences that prioritize maintaining intimacy can be beneficial. DSO also highlights the need for open communication and a willingness to address the issue as a couple. He cautions against relying solely on time to resolve the issue, as the demands of parenting and life can continue to impact the relationship. Instead, he encourages taking proactive steps to bridge the gap and reconnect as a couple. DSO advises men to assess their own behavior and ensure they are fulfilling their role as a supportive partner and co-parent. He also emphasizes the importance of championing the effort to rebuild intimacy and seeking professional help if necessary.Key Takeaways:The transition from being a partner to becoming a parent often leads to a shift in priorities and attention, which can leave men feeling neglected.Understanding the biological and societal factors at play can help navigate the challenges of maintaining intimacy in a long-term relationship.Building a supportive social circle and seeking outside influences that prioritize maintaining intimacy can be beneficial.Open communication and a proactive approach are essential in addressing the issue and rebuilding intimacy.Taking responsibility for one's own behavior and role as a partner and co-parent is crucial in bridging the gap and reconnecting as a couple.Quotes:"You are basically identifying something that a lot of men, myself included, have seen in relationships with women who become mothers to our children.""Guys that I speak to in my own personal family friend circle and guys I speak to in the dad starting over world. Backburner issues: those little things we're annoyed about but feel too small or irrelevant to discuss. So we put them on the backburner where they keep growing and growing until they become this big issue in our relationship. Sounds familiar? In this second part of my interview with Tanya Hale, who's an incredible mid-life relationship coach, she shares her formula for talking about backburner issues. Because here's how she sees it: We don't want to be mean. We want to be peacekeepers. But we don't realize that by adopting this peacekeeper's mindset, we're working against our relationship. The solution? Instead of blaming and attacking, we have to learn how to bring up those backburner issues in a loving and kind way. Tanya's formula is going to help us bring up backburner issues by owning it and still honoring what's going on for you while communicating it to your loved ones.In this episode on how to bring up backburner issues, we discuss:Are you lying to your spouse?;Learning to bring up backburner issues in a loving and kind way;Acknowledging there's an issue;Recognizing and communicating that your feelings, thoughts, and points of view are not facts; And more!If you'd like to connect, you can find me on Instagram (@bethhillmancoaching) or go to my website www.bethhillmancoaching.com. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of November 27 and December 4, 2023. MUSIC – 8 sec – Instrumental. That's part of “Backburner,” by The Faux Paws.  It opens Virginia Water Radio's annual episode on winter-weather preparedness.  Have a listen for about 30 seconds to some of the song's lyrics to set the stage for talking about cold times. MUSIC – ~32 sec – Lyrics: “I put my heart in the freezer, I put my love on ice,  I tell myself I don't need her, wouldn't that be nice?  I put my heart in the freezer, I put my love on hold, I tell myself I don't need her, and then I wonder why I feel so cold.  I wonder why I feel, I wonder why I feel, I wonder why I feel so cold.” All Virginia residents, whether or not they've tried to put their heart in the freezer, will soon have no wonder about why they feel so cold: winter astronomically begins in Virginia on December 21 at 10:27 p.m.  That's the Eastern Standard time of the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, when that hemisphere is at its maximum tilt away from the sun.  From well before the December solstice, all the way through the season's conclusion in March, winter can bring cold temperatures, hazardous roads, power outages, fire hazards, and other concerns.  To help you be prepared, here are 10 tips compiled from information provided by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 1. Avoid traveling in winter-storm conditions if you can.  If you must travel, get road-condition information from the Virginia 511 telephone system, mobile app, or Web site, and carry in your vehicle an emergency kit, including jumper cables, blankets, a flashlight, food and water, and other items. 2. Have battery-powered sources of lighting and information, along with enough batteries to last through a power outage of several days. 3.  Develop and practice a family emergency plan that covers sheltering; escape from a home fire; emergency meeting places; communications; a supply of food, water, and medications; and other factors specific to your circumstances. 4.  Get fireplaces, wood stoves, and chimneys inspected and cleaned. 5.  Install a smoke detector in every bedroom and on every floor level; test them monthly and replace the batteries at least annually.  6.  Install a carbon monoxide detector in your home and check or replace the battery every six months. 7.  If you use electric space heaters, make sure they'll switch off automatically if the heater falls over; plug them into wall outlets, not extension cords; keep them at least three feet from combustible objects; don't leave heaters unattended; and check for cracked or damaged wires or plugs. 8.  Generators, camp stoves, and other devices that burn gasoline, charcoal, or other fuels should be used outdoors only. 9.  Learn where to shut off water valves in case a pipe bursts. And 10.  Be careful of overexertion during snow shoveling. More information on preparing for winter weather, fires, and other emergencies is available online from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, at vaemergency.gov. Next time the forecast calls for snow, freezing rain, or other wintry weather, here's hoping that you can stay warm, dry, and safe. Thanks to Andrew VanNorstrand for permission to use this episode's music, and we close with about 20 more seconds of “Backburner.” MUSIC - ~20 sec – Instrumental. EXTRA INFORMATION ABOUT WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS The following information is quoted from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, “Winter Weather,” online at https://www.vaemergency.gov/threats/winter-weather, as of 11-6-23. “Winter storms can range from freezing rain or ice to a few hours of moderate snowfall, to a blizzard that lasts for several days.  Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures, power outages, and unpredictable road conditions. Before, during, and after a winter storm, roads and walkways may become extremely dangerous or impassable.  Access to critical community services such as public transportation, child care, healthcare providers and schools may be limited.  Preparing your home, car, and family before cold weather and a winter storm arrives is critical. *During a winter storm, stay off the roads as much as possible and only drive when absolutely necessary.  Always give snow plows the right of way.*Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning device inside your home, garage, basement, crawlspace, or any other partially enclosed area.*Snow shoveling is a known trigger for heart attacks!  Always avoid overexertion when shoveling.*When severe weather occurs, plan to check on elderly or disabled neighbors and relatives.*If you must travel, know the road conditions before you leave home.  Visit 511Virginia.org or call 511 for road condition updates.*Protect yourself from frostbite!  Hands, feet, and face are the most commonly affected areas so wear a hat, and mittens (which are warmer than gloves) and cover your mouth with a scarf to reduce heat loss.*Keep dry!  Change out of wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat.*Wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer or heavy clothing. Winter Storm Watch – Be Aware Severe weather such as heavy snow or ice is possible in the next day or two. Winter Storm Warning – Take Action Severe winter conditions have either begun or will begin soon in your area. Prepare Your Home *Make sure your home is properly insulated.*Check the weather stripping around your windows and doors.*Learn how to shut off water valves in case a pipe bursts.*Have additional heat sources  on hand in case of a power outage.*Keep a fire extinguisher accessible.*Replace the batteries in your carbon monoxide detector annually. Prepare Your Car *Batteries lose power as temperatures drop, be sure to have yours tested.*Check your car's antifreeze level.*Have your radiator system serviced.*Replace your car's windshield wiper fluid with a wintertime mix.*Proactively replace your car's worn tires and wiper blades.*To help with visibility, clean off your car entirely – including your trunk, roof, windows, and headlights. Include a Car Emergency Kit Tailor your winter car emergency supply kit to you and your family's needs.  Here are suggested items: blankets;drinking water and snacks for everyone in the car, including pets;boots;basic first-aid kit;warm coat and insulating layers (sweatpants, gloves, hat, socks,);rags, paper towels, or pre-moistened wipes;basic set of tools;car emergency warning devices such as road flares or reflectors;ice scraper/snow brush;jumper cables/jump pack;fire extinguisher;cash;items for children such as diapers, baby wipes, toys, etc.;flashlight, with extra batteries;hand warmers;paper map;portable smartphone power bank;extra medication;garbage bags;traction aid such as sand, salt, or non-clumping, cat litter;tarp, raincoat, and gloves;shovel. Did You Know? *Dehydration can make you more susceptible to hypothermia.*If it's too cold for you, it's too cold for your pet!  Don't leave pets outside for prolonged periods of time and have plenty of fresh, unfrozen water on hand.*It can snow at temperatures well above freezing.*Temperatures do not have to be below zero degrees to cause harm.” SOURCES USED FOR AUDIO AND OFFERING MORE INFORMATION Timeanddate.com, “December Solstice: Longest and Shortest Day of the Year,” by Konstantin Bikos, Aparna Kher, and Graham Jones, online at https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/december-solstice.html. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Inadequacy. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Abundance. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Titus2:11-15; 2 Timothy 3:2-7; Mark 11:15-19; Psalms 35a:1-14. A WORD FROM THE LORD WEBSITE: www.AWFTL.org. We had the pleasure of interviewing NIKI over Zoom video!Jakarta-born, LA-based singer-songwriter, and producer NIKI releases the visual for her track “The Apartment We Won't Share.”Directed by Isaac Ravishankara, the new visual for “The Apartment We Won't Share” compliments the nostalgic track that reflects on what could have been with a past relationship. NIKI is contemplative as she strolls through her apartment alone before picking up her guitar to craft the introspective song. Most recently, NIKI made her NPR Tiny Desk debut where she delivered a carefully crafted & stripped-back performance of a handful of songs from her sophomore album Nicole, before closing with her hit single “Every Summertime."Following her sold-out North American headlining tour last fall, NIKI will be bringing her live show to cities across the globe with her 2023 world tour which will span across North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. The run also includes performances at festivals including Head in the Clouds NYC & LA, Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands. The full list of dates is below; please visit https://nikizefanya.com/ for more information.Previously, NIKI released the music video for her track “Backburner.” The video is deliberate and intimate, taking viewers into her world as she watches old footage recorded on her camcorder and re-lives fond memories of a past relationship.Last summer, NIKI released her sophomore album Nicole, a project that sees her where she shines, returning to her singer-songwriter roots in a carefully crafted coming-of-age juncture that sees present-day NIKI meet with her teenage self. The album was released to critical acclaim by the likes of NPR, Billboard, Vanity Fair, and V Magazine, who hailed Nicole as “NIKI's piece-de-resistance that kicks off an exceptional new chapter for the burgeoning songstress.” NIKI also released her live album Live at the Wiltern last month, which features live recordings performed at the final show of NIKI's sold-out headlining tour at the Los Angeles venue last October.NIKI has had an impressive career thus far, amassing over 2.1 billion streams worldwide and opening for Taylor Swift on tour when she was just 15. In addition to performing at Coachella and embarking on her headlining North American tour last fall, she has also headlined at 88rising's Head in the Clouds Festival in Los Angeles, New York, Manila, and Jakarta.ABOUT NIKISince breaking through with her 2018 EP Zephyr, NIKI has made a powerful imprint on the pop scene, amassing a devoted global fanbase with over 2.1 billion streams to date and making history as the first Indonesian artist ever to perform at Coachella. But after delivering her critically acclaimed debut album MOONCHILD, the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter felt compelled to completely reexamine her artistic process—a move that found her revisiting the vast catalog of unfiltered and indie-folk-leaning songs she'd created in high school. As she returned to the stream-of-consciousness approach to songwriting that defined her earliest material, the 23-year-old musician soon arrived at her sophomore album Nicole: a boldly self-possessed body of work written entirely by NIKI, spotlighting her finespun storytelling and warmly expressive vocals more fully than ever before. With the album's first half comprised of new or never-before-heard songs and its latter half featuring her favorite tracks from her widely beloved YouTube channel, NIKI imbues her songs with the kind of lived-in specificity that immediately reconnects the listener with the rush and devastation of their own first love.We want to hear from you! Hard Weeks, Integration, and The Gift Of Rest

My last couple of weeks, two weeks really almost at the mark right now, have been turbulent; I would say they'd been rough. But that's mostly just been turbulent. It's been hard. Not because I wasn't a part of and doing some really great things, I was. I had a wonderful time in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and I was in Santa Cruz with Young Life staff. And I was doing things that were wonderful. I was only somewhat present in some of those things. Because internally, I was really having a hard time. And while there are a number of factors to that, one of the main factors is the two weekends ago was Father's Day weekend. And it's almost always a tricky, sticky, and other kind of icky weekend for me; as a dad, I love being celebrated. Obviously, I like being with my kids. But man, as time has passed, I just miss my dad more on those days. The older I get, the closer I get to his age; when I lost him, the harder it is to miss him when I miss him. So it happens more. It happens less frequently than it used to happen. But when it happens, and it's exacerbated by an entire holiday celebrating fatherhood, woof. That was a predominant factor. So in the meantime, I'm having these incredible experiences. And I get to do this incredible work. And I'm with these wonderful people. And I'm living in some form of disintegration, not terrible. And this is part of how we live a lot of the time. I didn't have space. I didn't have room, and I didn't really want it to. I didn't. I didn't have space; I didn't have room to actually deal with all that was going on in me. I needed to be present for what was in front of me. That's part of how we live; that's kind of unavoidable. I can have internal struggles; I can be doing something really incredible and wonderful, but I have to be in both places and both things at the same time. So I live a little bit divided. But I didn't have time to let my soul catch up with myself entirely. This brings me to this; my friend Daniel introduced me to this John Dewey quote, the reads; We do not learn from experience; we learn from reflecting on experience. So I don't learn from experience; the thing I'm in doesn't really teach me anything directly. I can have all these experiences; I can receive all this data. I can have all these feelings. And then, at some point, the gift of rest as a practice is I let my soul and my experiences catch up with me. And intentionally, we call this the examine, look through what's going on in me. And then I can learn I just had not until a couple of days ago had the time to let my life catch up with me so that I could be integrated and be whole, which is one way to talk about belovedness. In the book Sacred Strides, in the introduction, I lead out with this story, this image about jogging with my dad for the last time. Their story reads like this from the book. Running together with my dad was a key connection point until I lost him to depression and suicide in 1998. To this day, I still remember our last run. It was really hard. It was hard for him physically; it was hard for both of us emotionally. We barely got into the four miles that we planned to run before he started falling apart. His left knee hurt from a foul he'd taken a few months previously, and he couldn't maintain his rhythm or his pace. He limped back to the car. And I remember him trying to hide his face. So I couldn't see that he was crying. I'm sorry, I can't keep up. He said. I was in my mid-20s At the time, and I was in decent running shape. But I didn't need him to keep up. I just wanted him to be with me. Because I loved him. I know now how hard it was for my dad to believe the simple truth that he was just playing loved. I moved around to his weak side, lightly grabbed his wrist, and threw his arm over my shoulders, and we finished the last half mile that way, arms around each other. Walking step by step together, his weakness meant room for strength in me, which meant connection. And that's all they ever wanted. Wholeness and integration is one of the gifts of the practice of rest that I can let my whole life catch up with me, including the things that are tearing me apart inside. I don't have space for that, and most of my life, I actually have to be present in what's in front of me. And sometimes, if not oftentimes, especially if I'm having a rough time internally. I've got to put that somewhere close to a backburner so that I can be present to the people to the job that I'm doing in front of me, which means that rest gets to be a place where I catch up with my whole self or my whole self catches up with me and I can look at the whole of my life, my victories, my successes, my positive and negative experience and let me be entirely myself and know that I am loved in every square inch of my whole life.
