WELCOME to the 5th Season & 5th Anniversary for A News You Can Use Podcast. Thank you so much for being apart of our journey. Today's episode, we go live to the Dallas Catalyst Project event in Dallas, Texas in the Sunny South Dallas region. South Dallas is where I grew up and was raised as a child. Sunny South Dallas is MY HOOD. Celebrating today because of all of the awesome 22 projects that are underway with vital funding revitalizing this part of the city. Here is more information on the Dallas Catalyst Project: In 2018, we introduced the Dallas Catalyst Project (DCP) as a place-based neighborhood revitalization initiative among TREC Community Investors and three nonprofit partners: St. Philip's School & Community Center, Cornerstone Baptist Church, and Forest Forward. These organizations continue to team up to help make a difference in South Dallas' Forest District. Throughout the initiative, TREC members have served as project managers for the three community organizations and provided pro bono professional services, technical assistance, and fundraising support. After having served in various capacities as a speech-language pathologist for 40 years, Leiana J. Thomas Gary retired officially in 2019. Always a crafter and amateur gardener with an in-born entrepreneurial spirit and raised by a mother of the Renaissance kind, Leiana tended to look at things a little differently. During one of the last outdoor walks with her mother Alva prior to her passing in 2007, Leiana, made the snide remark “Someone should do something about these nasty looking planters” and her mother responding quietly later said, “And who might that someone be?” After 2 years of trying not to remember that conversation, Leiana founded the Cottage Grove Planters Society. She dug up all the hostas and day lilies out of her garden and began transplanting them with the help of family and friends into the planter pots one at a time. After two years of tending the planters, she began to look at the blank concrete planters as canvases to display student artwork. In 2009, the Cottage Grove Planters Project began, placing framed versions of local student artwork on the then 24 planter pots, using donated funds and materials. In 2012, the Cottage Grove Planters Project was awarded a Pepsi Refresh Grant to complete the installations. The project has continued since then and has been supported by numerous individuals and organizations such as My Block, My Hood, My City. The CGPS was recently awarded a Neighborhood Access Program (NAP) grant from the City of Chicago — Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events to replace the artwork with new designs by more local school children in addition to refreshing the plants and flowers. Also, to learn more about her forthcoming book covering the history and beauty of decorative drink ware, contact her at ltgary@sbcglobal.net. NOTE: Although we didn't cover this during the interview, along with Leiana's other gifts, she transforms magnets into brooches. While wearing her mother's favorite brooch that was lost forever because the clasp opened, Leiana decided that would never happen again. Having created refrigerator magnets in the past, she began adapting brooches that would adhere to clothing without pins using magnets instead. Ladies of Attraction was born in 2009. Massive delay in uploading this show, almost a month in fact. Been in London 5 weeks now didn't anticipate how much of a set back these things can be and although I do live by consistency being key, sometimes its just not possible. But anyway I got my shit back in order, Im real happy to be in London and I can't start doing some real life shit for the whole genre. I appreciate your patience and support. For this show I had to get my longest running friend involved who I met though the phone genre. Ive been chatting to Nitay for a good few years now and despite being flights away from each other, have stayed in contact. He flew out to the UK and we had a crazy time touring the place. Anyway very soon Ill be announcing my next guest he's one of the founders of purple posse and has created some of the most iconic tracks in the game, but for now here's 2 of the hottest mixes in the genre right now. This is Unsung, our podcast with Sonos Radio where the world's greatest artists reveal their heroes who never caught the spotlight. To round off the series, we're touching base with a true musical innovator. Dizzee Rascal is one of the most influential British artists of the 21st century. Born and raised in East London, his musical journey started aged 14, rapping over jungle and drum ‘n' bass on London's pirate stations. In 2003, Dizzee released his debut album, 'Boy In Da Corner'. Capturing the tension and isolation of inner-city life through lucid lyrical storytelling and a groundbreaking production style now known globally as grime.Dizzee's Unsung choice is Memphis rapper Project Pat. First making waves through collaborations with Three Mix Mafia, the hugely influential rap trio founded by his brother Juicy J, Pat's distinctive flow, playfully irreverent lyrics and his taste for minimal, lo-fi beats gained him cult status and helped anoint the South and the new capital of US rap. It's also a sound which, in the 90s, captured the attention of a young Dizzee Rascal, then a schoolboy in Tower Hamlets.Dizzee talks to journalist and documentary maker Kieran Yates about discovering Pat, his affinity with Southern hip-hop which led to a 2007 collaboration with Pimp C and Bun B of UGK and what it means for music to be a product of its environment. The series is produced by Eliza Lomas and mixed by Becky Street. The series leads are Duncan Harrison and Luke Sutton.Project Pat: If You Ain't from My Hood (feat. This episode of #BTLRadioShow takes us from the social consciousness of A TINY RIPPLE OF HOPE in Chicago to the wild and wacky world of WILLY'S WONDERLAND. First up is our exclusive conversation with director KEVIN LEWIS going in-depth on the wild and wonderful world of WILLY'S WONDERLAND starring Nic Cage! Who doesn't love a Nic Cage film – especially when he's being Nic Cage at the top of his game. And that's exactly what we get from him in WILLY'S WONDERLAND. Listen as Kevin talks about his attraction to G.O. Parson's script, working with Cage in developing the character of "The Janitor", Molly Coffee's detailed production design, cinematography and developing extreme dutched angles and explosive use of color and light in collaboration with his cinematographer David Newbert, scoring by Emoi, and so much more. Then we shift gears as director/producer JASON POLEVOI joins us live talking about his documentary A TINY RIPPLE OF HOPE which had its world premiere at the virtual 2021 Slamdance Film Festival. Focusing on the story of Chicago native, Jahmal Cole and his My Block, My Hood, My City organization which brings hope and opportunity to teenagers across Chicago's segregated South and West Sides, the film follows a formative year for Jahmal as he makes the hard decisions and sacrifices for the community over himself. Listen as Jason talks about the genesis of the documentary, the multi-year course of shooting, shifting through-line of the film's focus, narrowing the scope of story to one year and making the decision as to which year would be the focus, the lengthy and challenging editing process, and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Jahmal Cole is the confident and charismatic leader of My Block, My Hood, My City: an organization that brings hope and opportunity to teenagers across Chicago's segregated South and West Sides. Away from the spotlight of his important work though, Jahmal is in the fight of his life as he battles to keep his home out of foreclosure, his marriage alive, and himself out of harm's way. A Tiny Ripple of Hope follows a formative year for Jahmal as he struggles with everything he must sacrifice so that the people and the city he loves can prosper. About the Director: Jason Polevoi is a founding partner of the Chicago-based production company One City Films and the first-time feature Director and Producer of the Slamdance Film Festival premiering documentary A Tiny Ripple of Hope. Jason’s previous credits include the Chicago/Midwest Emmy-winning documentary F*** Your Hair, the Independent Lens series The Calling, and A Regional Taste, a first-of-its-kind docuseries for the James Beard Foundation. About Jahmal Cole: A champion of social justice, Jahmal Cole’s mission is to build a more interconnected Chicago on the pillars of service and education. As the founder and CEO of the city’s fastest-growing social impact organization, My Block • My Hood • My City, Jahmal is the creator of an exposure-based education program for teens and a network of volunteer initiatives that serve Chicago communities year-round. In 2018, Jahmal was named a Chicagoan of the Year (http://go2.mailengine1.com/click/fcoj-2czupr-ypn3sx-gewyggp8/) by Chicago Magazine, in 2019, he was named to Crain’s 40 under 40 (http://go2.mailengine1.com/click/fcoj-2czupr-ypn3sy-gewyggp9/) , and in 2020 he was awarded the American Red Cross Community Impact Hero Award.
The inspiring, gritty documentary, A TINY RIPPLE OF HOPE, focuses on Jahmal Cole with his My Block, My Hood, My City: an organization bringing hope and opportunity to teenagers across Chicago's segregated South and West Sides. Cole is charismatic and charming, and the beating heart of his community –because he does care so very much (his home mortgage is used to fund his organization!). This aspirational feature film documentary A TINY RIPPLE OF HOPE from award winning filmmaker Jason Polevoi will make its world premiere at this year’s Slamdance Film Festival (February 12th – 25th, 2021) as a Competition Documentary and the film follows a formative year for Jahmal as he struggles with everything he must sacrifice so that the people and the city he loves can prosper. Director Jason Polevoi joins us to talk about the complex and occasionally chaotic life and work of Jahmal Cole as well as documenting the systemic barriers that far too many people living in Chicago’s poorest zip codes are forced to navigate and the joy of watching so many, including Jahmal, forge their way towards a better future. Jahmal Cole thought his only career options were to be a basketball player or a rapper because that's all he could see in the neighborhood where he grew up. It wasn't until a Greyhound bus trip to Texas took him outside the city that he realized there was a great big world out there waiting to be discovered. Decades later, Cole is a multiple award-winning youth mentor, author and community organizer who has been named “Chicagoan of the Year” and one of the “20 Most Inspiring Chicagoans.” His organization My Block, My Hood, My City takes youth from under-resourced Chicago schools on field trips around the city in order to overcome isolation, boost educational attainment, and open them up to new possibilities for their lives. In one of our most inspiring interviews to date, Jahmal Cole tells the Creative Muscle his harrowing story of overcoming obstacles, using creativity to beat seemingly insurmountable odds, the importance of mentors, the need for the long game, and power of goals.
