Heyyy, let's talk about JUSTICE! It's been a long day, pour some gin and have a seat. Two girls, working in law, and we want to talk about what really goes on. We’re shedding light on the inner workings of the criminal justice system, and sometimes we just need some gin. Justine and Amanda deep dive into the many perspectives of the criminal justice system giving listeners a look at the system through the eyes of all walks of life. They discuss the successes and many failures of the system allowing listeners to understand the side of justice that’s often not portrayed. Gin & Justice highlights stories that are often forgotten in the "True Crime" category, and that is, views and perspectives from the real criminal justice system. We talk about the impacts the criminal justice system on those who are incarcerated, their loved ones, and especially those who are wrongfully convicted and spend decades imprisoned for a crime they are not guilty of. We also highlight how substance use disorder and mental health are criminalized and have created a system of mass incarceration. Follow and subscribe for weekly behind the scenes look at the American Legal System.
On this episode of Gin & Justice, with heavy hearts we announce that we will be taking a step back from the podcast. For awhile we will not be releasing any new episodes but we will be keeping all prior episodes live. Life has thrown us some wild curveballs this last year and we've both been feeling overwhelmed and that we didn't have the time and energy each of our episodes deserves. We never want to sell these stories short, or as Amanda says "we don't want to ever half ass this, we want to always whole ass it."We are still reachable through our emails and socials. Please continue to reach out, and please don't stop sharing these stories and spreading the information needed to create the change we all need.Farewell for now, not forever.xoxo- G&J Oh, we also talk about Alabama, and their terrible Death Penalty choices.Alabama's upcoming gas execution could harm witnesses and violate religious liberty:https://www.npr.org/2023/12/12/1218591962/alabamas-upcoming-gas-execution-could-harm-witnesses-and-violate-religious-liberAlabama's new execution method could be dangerous for everyone in the room: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/lethal-injection-alabama-kenneth-smith-b2464318.htmlDon't forget to leave us a review and follow us on social media!https://www.ginandjusticepodcast.comhttps://www.facebook.com/GinAndJustice/IG: @ginandjusticepodcastTwitter: Gin_JusticePodTikTok: Gin_and_Justice

It's the last Legal Brief of the month, so you know what that means! Justine and Amanda tell you about all the people added to The National Exoneration Registry."The National Registry of Exonerations is a project of the Newkirk Center for Science & Society at University of California Irvine, the University of Michigan Law School and Michigan State University College of Law. It was founded in 2012 in conjunction with the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law. The Registry provides detailed information about every known exoneration in the United States since 1989—cases in which a person was wrongly convicted of a crime and later cleared of all the charges based on new evidence of innocence. The Registry also maintains a more limited database of known exonerations prior to 1989."For more information of the National Registry of Exonerations:https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/about.aspxRICHARD KWIL:https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/casedetail.aspx?caseid=6581ANTHONY HALL:https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/casedetail.aspx?caseid=6588PATRICK BROWN:https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/casedetail.aspx?caseid=6591BILLY FAIRCLOTH:https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/casedetail.aspx?caseid=6576DAVID WRIGHT:https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/casedetail.aspx?caseid=6578NORBERTO PEETS:https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/casedetail.aspx?caseid=6592Don't forget to leave us a review and follow us on social media!https://www.ginandjusticepodcast.comhttps://www.facebook.com/GinAndJustice/IG: @ginandjusticepodcastTwitter: Gin_JusticePodTikTok: Gin_and_Justice
This week on Gin & Justice, Amanda first tells us about some of the new laws targeting the trans population and youth, including criminal penalties for using bathrooms. Justine then brings us back through a case analysis of the case Kennedy v. Louisiana, 554 U.S. 407 (2008). This is the case which built off of Coker v. Georgia, in which the US Supreme Court held it was unconstitutional and a violation of the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments to sentence an individual to the death penalty for sexual assault of a minor. Despite the US Supreme Court analyzing this, Florida has recently reenacted a statute the provides for the death penalty for sexual battery of a child, a penalty even the Florida Supreme Court has found unconstitutional in 1981. So much for stare decisis.
