This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit groundeddaily.substack.comWhy Belief Must Come Before Practice: Introduction to Imam Al-Ghazali's 40 PrinciplesUnderstanding the foundations of Islamic knowledge requires more than memorizing rulings or performing rituals. It demands a systematic approach to learning that begins with certainty in belief before moving to practice. This article explores the framework laid out in Imam Al-Ghazali's The 40 Principles of Our Religion, examining why aqidah (creed) forms the essential foundation upon which all other religious knowledge is built. The Three Dimensions of Islamic PracticeThe Islamic tradition recognises three fundamental dimensions of religious life: Islam, Iman, and Ihsan. This framework, derived from Hadith Jibreel (known as Umm al-Sunnah), provides the organisational structure for understanding our religion.Islam: The Science of PracticeIslam encompasses the ritualistic and practical aspects of religion, which later developed into the science of fiqh (jurisprudence). While four major schools of Islamic law are widely recognised today, the historical reality reveals far greater diversity. Scholars document more than 80 madhabs during the early period of Islamic intellectual development. The survival of a legal school depends not on the Imam's knowledge alone, but on the continuity of transmission. Consider the madhab of Imam Al-Layth ibn Sa'd: despite Imam Al-Shafi'i's assertion that he was “afqahu min Malik” (more knowledgeable in fiqh than Imam Malik), his school did not survive because his students failed to continue the work. The Importance of Unbroken TransmissionContemporary practitioners receive their understanding of Islamic law through an unbroken chain of transmission (isnad) extending back to the founding Imams. For Shafi'i scholars, this means a documented chain of teachers and students from the present day all the way to Imam Al-Shafi'i himself. This chain preserves not just the rulings, but the contextual understanding and technical terminology. Without this living transmission, legal texts become increasingly difficult to interpret accurately. Imam Al-Shafi'i's magnum opus, Al-Umm, illustrates this challenge. Despite its importance, this foundational text is rarely taught in traditional Islamic circles today because the specific terminological framework has not been preserved in the same way as later works.Legal terminology evolves across generations. Early scholars often used cautious language when discussing prohibitions, preferring phrases like “I dislike this” rather than definitively declaring something haram. This reflected both their taqwa (God-consciousness) and their reluctance to claim authority over matters of divine law. In communities with high levels of religious commitment, such subtle expressions were sufficient to guide behavior. As communities changed, scholars adapted their pedagogical approach. The terminology became more explicit and categorical, even as the underlying rulings often became more accommodating. Imam Al-Nawawi's strict position on Fatiha recitation—invalidating prayer for mispronouncing even a single letter—was later moderated by scholars like Imam Al-Haythami, who recognised that people from certain linguistic backgrounds might be physically unable to produce specific Arabic phonemes. This adaptation reflects not inconsistency, but the dynamic nature of fiqh as a living discipline that must address the reality of Muslim communities. A contemporary example: visiting a remote fishing village in Malaysia, one encounters Imams who are part-time dive masters or boat captains, leading congregations where the recitation quality varies significantly. The fiqh tradition accommodates this reality while maintaining standards appropriate to each context.Iman: The Science of BeliefIman addresses matters of belief, formalized into the science of Aqidah. Within this domain, several schools of thought emerged:Athari (textual): This approach relies primarily on scriptural authority. The Quran commands belief, therefore one believes. This circular reasoning functions effectively in majority-Muslim contexts where baseline assumptions about God's existence and the Quran's authority are shared cultural knowledge.Ash'ari and Maturidi: These schools, founded by Imam Abu Hassan Al-Ash'ari and Imam Mansur Al-Maturidi respectively, integrate revelation with rational argumentation. This synthesis became necessary as Muslims encountered diverse philosophical traditions and needed to defend their beliefs through reasoned discourse.Ihsan: The Science of Spiritual ExcellenceIhsan developed into the science of tasawuf (Islamic spirituality), which also encompasses multiple approaches:The Salaf approach emphasizes wara' (scrupulousness) and zuhud (asceticism). Note that “Salaf” refers to a historical period—the first three centuries of Islamic history—rather than the modern movement called “Salafism,” which emerged several centuries later.Imam Al-Ghazali championed tazkiyah (purification of the soul), focusing on removing spiritual diseases from the heart and cultivating praiseworthy character traits. The Falsafah (philosophical) school, represented most prominently by Ibn Arabi, engaged with metaphysical questions and influenced Islamic mystical thought, particularly in Ottoman territories. This study focuses primarily on the tazkiyah tradition, as it addresses the practical work of spiritual development most directly applicable to contemporary Muslims.

Repentance/Tauba In The Modern Age | Unseen Signals | Shaykh Saqib IqbalThe Concept of Unseen Signals (0:00 - 3:20)Early Reminders: In childhood, sins often met with immediate consequences—like failing an exam, getting caught, or falling ill (0:09 - 0:25). These served as signals to repent. The Danger of Silence: Over time, these signals may stop. A person might continue sinning in private while maintaining a high social or religious status (like an Imam or businessman), leading to a false sense of security (0:29 - 1:30).Divine Neglect: The absence of punishment isn't necessarily a sign of pleasure; it can be a sign that one has been removed from the list of beloveds (3:02 - 4:10). This is described as a major trial where worldly doors are opened while spiritual ones close. The "PRAN" Method of Repentance (19:37 - 24:00)To make repentance effective and sustainable, the Shaykh introduces a simple four-step acronym: PRAN.1. P - Past: Acknowledge and confess past sins with the belief that Allah will forgive (19:55 - 20:45).2. R - Remorse: Feel true shame and embarrassment for the actions committed (20:46 - 21:12).3. A - Allah's Sake: Repent solely to please Allah or out of fear of the hereafter, not for worldly reputation (21:15 - 22:36).4. N - Never Again: Make a firm, sincere intention to never return to that sin in the future (22:54 - 23:12).

This episode uncovers a hidden pattern that connects the crucifixion of Jesus, the tragedy of Karbala, and the knowledge of the prophets themselves. Drawing directly from the Bible, early Christian sources, Islamic narrations, and esoteric traditions, it explores why Adam, Moses, and Jesus were aware of Karbala long before it occurred, and why events surrounding Jesus and Imam al-Hussain may not be as they appear on the surface. This is not speculation or symbolism, but a deep theological investigation into substitution, divine protection, and the way truth can be concealed in plain sight. Viewers are invited to question inherited narratives and examine what scripture actually says when read carefully.

Beginning a New Text with Imam al-GhazaliAlhamdulillah, this session marks the beginning of a new text in our weekly Ratib & Reminders gathering. For those based in Perth, you're warmly invited to join us live at Qaswa House every Thursday from 7:00–9:00 p.m. The gathering is open to everyone — men and women, young and old. After returning to Perth, it was a joy to be back at Ratib and to see the continuity of the program while I was away. We recently completed Arba‘ina Shamil fi Insanil Kamil, the 40 hadith on the perfection of Rasulullah ﷺ, and many were able to join the khatam we did live from Madinah. With that chapter completed, we now move into a new phase of study. The most common request I receive is to study the works of Imam al-Ghazali. While his magnum opus Ihya' ‘Ulum al-Din is one of the greatest works in Islamic scholarship, it is also vast — effectively forty books in one. For this reason, rather than beginning something we may struggle to complete, we've chosen a shorter, more focused text that reflects Ghazali's core project.Over the next two sessions we'll introduce this new book and begin exploring its themes. After that, we'll pause for Ramadan, as Ratib will be replaced by nightly taraweeh at Moresby Street Hall, Kensington, where we'll be reading and briefly reflecting on Surah al-A‘raf. After Ramadan, inshaAllah, we'll return to the text and continue the journey.Imam al-Ghazali had a unique way of teaching. He often wrote large, comprehensive works, then summarised them into medium-length texts, and finally into concise versions meant to be memorised. His belief was that knowledge only truly becomes yours when it is internalised — when you live with it, not merely read it. This approach shapes the book we'll be studying together. The text we've chosen is Al-Arba‘in fi Usul al-Din (The 40 Principles of the Religion). Interestingly, it did not begin as a standalone book. It was originally written as an appendix to Jawahir al-Qur'an (The Jewels of the Qur'an). After guiding readers on how to approach and understand the Qur'an, Imam al-Ghazali addressed the next essential question: How do we live the Qur'an? These forty principles were his answer. Recognising their importance, he permitted the work to be published independently. For many, especially those who went through traditional Islamic schooling in places like Malaysia, the content of this book will feel familiar. Much of classical Islamic education has been shaped, directly or indirectly, by Imam al-Ghazali's framework. To understand his project, we stepped back and looked at the foundation of Islamic scholarship itself — Hadith Jibril, often called Umm al-Sunnah. This hadith presents the religion through three inseparable dimensions: Islam, Iman, and Ihsan.Islam refers to the outward actions of the religion — prayer, fasting, zakat, and hajj — which later became formalised as the science of fiqh. Iman addresses belief, engaging the intellect before settling in the heart, and developed into the science of ‘aqidah. Ihsan focuses on spiritual refinement: worshipping Allah as though you see Him, and knowing that He sees you even when you do not.Over time, each of these dimensions developed its own sciences and terminology. These terms did not exist in the Prophet's time, but they were created to preserve clarity and make learning accessible. Tasawwuf, when understood correctly, belongs firmly within this tradition — addressing the heart and soul, not as a replacement for fiqh or ‘aqidah, but as their completion.Imam al-Ghazali lived during a period of deep fragmentation in the Muslim world — politically, intellectually, and spiritually. His life's work was to bring these dimensions back together, showing that a sound religious life cannot survive on law alone, belief alone, or spirituality alone. Each needs the others. It was during a profound personal crisis, after reaching the peak of his academic career, that Ghazali withdrew from public life for years of spiritual seclusion. From this period emerged Ihya' ‘Ulum al-Din, the first work to systematically unite belief, practice, and spiritual purification into a single guide for living Islam.Al-Arba‘in fi Usul al-Din is the distilled essence of that project. It is organised into forty principles: foundations of belief, guidance on practice, dangers on the path, and the means of salvation. This is the text we'll be walking through together, slowly and practically, inshaAllah. This session served as an introduction to both Imam al-Ghazali and the book we'll be studying. We'll continue next week, before pausing for Ramadan, and then resume the journey together. This is a public episode.

The Supreme Court on January 5, 2025, declined to grant bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, notwithstanding their incarceration for nearly six years without the commencement of trial. The court held that the constitutional guarantee of personal liberty is not “absolute”, and remains subject to the stringent bail regime prescribed under special statutes such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). A Bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria, however, granted conditional bail to five other co-accused, observing that the allegations against them indicated conduct of a subsidiary or facilitative nature, thereby warranting differential treatment. What are the implications of the ruling? Does the ruling depart from settled bail jurisprudence? Does treating allegations of road blockades as “terrorist acts” risk emboldening governments to weaponise the law to criminalise dissent? This week, an interview we just conducted with Madeleine Wattenbarger and Axel Hernández of the Cooperativa de Periodismo in Mexico and Ambar Ruiz of Radio Zapote about the case of autonomous resistance and repression in the Mazateca community of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón in Oaxaca, Mexico, so named for being the birthplace of the Cipriano Ricardo Flores Magón, revolutionary Mexican anarchist who was murdered by medical neglect by the US prison system in 1922 (check out our 2022 episode on the history). We talk about the rise to economic and political power of the family of Manuel Zepeda and his daughter Elena, their weaponization of the judiciary against community defenders resisting a hijacking in 2014 of the traditional community assembly and the years of organizing by Mazateca women whose loved ones face long prison sentences. We also speak about the case of Miguel Peralta, a Mazateca anarchist challenging his 5 decade sentence related to this case, as well as the recent murder by medical neglect while in prison of militant anarcho-punk Yorch Esquivel at the hands of the Mexican state at the behest of UNAM. He's still lacking access to an ADA-accessible bathroom and shower unit and has not had his property or commissary card returned. According to his supporters, Xinachtli is still experiencing weakness in his legs and has now been forced back into a completely inaccessible space, where he faces a serious risk of another life-threatening fall or injury. Xinachtli's supporters demand remains: Xinachtli must be moved out of McConnell into an ADA-accessible facility that can address his medical needs. McConnell has already proven it can't and won't provide adequate resources to care for Xinachtli in his current state. They are putting his life in danger. What does it mean to follow God today—not in history, but in the present moment? In the first episode of The Mahdi's Manifesto Podcast, Abdullah Hashem (Aba Al-Sadiq) explains the purpose, origins, and mission of a growing faith community built around the belief in a living, divinely appointed guide in every age. This episode addresses the questions many are afraid to ask: Why do believers gather around a living Imam? Is community life an obligation or a choice? How did prophetic societies function in the past—and can they exist again? What separates a divine community from cults, extremism, or political movements? Drawing on the lives of the Prophets and Messengers—from Adam, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad, to the Apostles and the righteous of every nation—this conversation explores the timeless pattern of believers withdrawing from corruption to establish justice, brotherhood, and shared responsibility. The episode also speaks directly to modern concerns, clarifying the community's firm commitment to peace, legality, compassion, and non-violence, while responding to media myths and public misunderstanding. At its core, this is not a call to fear—but a call to conscience. A call to reconsider what faith looks like when it is lived fully, openly, and together.

In this unforgettable episode of Shoulder to Shoulder, Pastor Doug and Rabbi Pesach sit down with Dr. Michael Brawan of Kenya and Rev. Adam Hajj Muhammad of Somalia, a former imam whose decision to follow Jesus cost him almost everything. Adam describes his childhood in a radically devout Muslim family, his rise as a respected Islamic judge and mosque builder, and the moment a divine encounter shattered everything he thought he knew. From that point on, his life became a dangerous walk of faith.  Adam shares how his public declaration of Christian faith triggered a violent backlash: his mother and wives were murdered, early converts were slaughtered, and there was a price on his head. Dr. Brawan recounts the extraordinary rescue operation that smuggled Adam out of Somalia in a coffin, and Adam explains why he later chose to return and plant underground churches despite the constant threat of torture and death. Recorded in Jerusalem while leading an African Christian delegation through Israel, this conversation shines a piercing light on the brutal persecution of Christians in Africa — and on the kind of courageous faith that refuses to back down.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. New York correspondent Luke Tress joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. Last Wednesday, roughly 200 rowdy protesters disrupted an Israel-immigration event outside the Park East Synagogue. Tress was there and paints a picture of the events and the evolving responses from Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. Days after US pro-Palestinian protesters shouted chants including “Globalize the Intifada” and “Death to the IDF” outside the Upper East Side synagogue, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who is Jewish, apologized to the congregation during Shabbat services. Is this allaying the community's fears? We then dive into the question several lawfare groups are now asking: Can a US law protecting abortion clinics push back against protests at synagogues? This week, anti-Zionist activist groups in New York City backed a Muslim leader who led a walkout from a college interfaith event last week after decrying a fellow panelist as “Zionist.” We learn how the mass exodus was basically shrugged off by those in attendance -- but why it is important to illuminate this and other similar events. Jewish groups at the University of Pennsylvania have expressed concern after federal authorities pressed the university in recent days to provide personal information about Jewish staffers in an investigation meant to combat antisemitism on campus. Tress untangles this saga. Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Every Muslim tries to make sense of life's mistakes, its setbacks, and the moments that test patience and character. The Prophet ﷺ didn't leave us to figure these things out alone. His short, comprehensive words teach us how to walk through life with clarity, balance, and wisdom. In this fourth part of Jawami' al-Akhbar by Imam al-Sa'di, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explains ahadith that speak directly to your daily reality: reminders that shape the way you think, react, and grow as a believer. This episode explores: - How a believer learns from painful experiences instead of repeating the same mistakes. - How planning, discipline, and self-control protect your time, your focus, and your worship. - How to recognise arrogance before it settles into the heart. - How contentment turns even limited provision into sufficiency. - How certain doors of good open or stay closed, depending on the choices you make. - Why temptations feel strong, and how to meet them with strength. - How simple acts of goodness carry weight with Allah and reshape your character. - How to guard your salah, hold your tongue, and control your anger, especially when it's hardest. - How to treat people with fairness, even when emotions run high. These ahadith aren't theoretical. They're practical guidance for anyone trying to live with sincerity, protect their habits, and build a character that will stand firm on the Day they meet Allah.
