Drew has been a professional songwriter for about ten years but has recently decided to return to the life of touring and releasing songs as a solo artist. His work has been recorded in many countries including the US, Canada, Ireland, Germany, and Australia, by legends like Merle Haggard, Randy Houser, Rob Snyder, Jason Charles Miller, Kevin Denney, John Schneider, and Australian-Canadian country singer Gord Bamford. Before becoming a full-time songwriter for a publishing house, Drew had it going on as a touring musician. He'd opened for Don Williams, Big & Rich, Lee Brice, and Lady A. He also opened for Merle Haggard at the Ryman Auditorium with industry executives, John Prine, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Keith Urban in the audience. He is the owner of Gray Sound Recording, working as a producer and senior mixing engineer, and the creator of The Before You Record Course. Drew released a song called Exes in September of 2022, which was one of the 15 most added songs for digital radio for multiple weeks following its release. He just dropped three new songs titled The Bottom Of It, Call Me Back, and Don't Wake Me Up. We talk about these songs plus: website platforms (he's used them all), his home base of Nashville, his ties to Fort Worth Texas, growing up in Tennessee, pneumonia, songwriting vocationally, touring, recording, the origins of "Robonzo", some of our favorite legendary drummers, and more. We spent quite a bit of time on pneumonia and Covid, but I only left some of that in the final edit. We may have digressed before ever touching on a music-related discussion. However, I think it was somewhat therapeutic for us both. Please enjoy my conversation with Drew Ryder Smith. Although we'd love to cover it all, we'll have to narrow it down to the news that we think matters most—starting Alex Kurtzman's new 5-year/$160 million contract with Paramount+ to develop not only Star Trek, but other projects as well. The New York Times's Nicole Sperling published an article on August 1, 2021, featuring interviews with Kurtzman and other major players involved. The article explores Kurtzman's past, present, and future projects for the studio and the hopes he has for the franchise. Something particularly interesting though, was the announcement that a “Starfleet Academy” series is in the works which “will be aimed at a younger audience.” Also, according to Sperling: Mr. Kurtzman, who wants to get much weirder with the franchise… points to a pitch from Graham Wagner (Portlandia, Silicon Valley), centered on the character Worf, that he calls “incredibly funny, poignant and touching. If it were up to me only, I would be pushing the boundaries much further than I think most people would want,” he said. “I think we might get there. Marvel has actually proven that you can. But you have to build a certain foundation in order to get there and we're still building our foundation.” Becoming Props of Pure Energy By Cat Hough Announced at Las Vegas, Gene Roddenberry's personal archives are being comprehensively digitized on an unprecedented scale, with plans to do some fancy sci-fi things with the material. The joint effort between the Roddenberry estate, OTOY, and Light Field Lab, hopes to preserve thousands of photos, documents, and physical assets like starship models in extreme digital detail, preserving it for future study and recreation. https://youtu.be/0bDuT-4cFyg The Roddenberry Archives will use OTOY's blockchain-based computer rendering network to extensively digitize the Roddenberry estate's collection from the producer's work on the Star Trek franchise. Long time Trek writers Denise and Michael Okuda, artist Mike “Beeple” Winklemann, and comics legend Alex Ross are also contributing to the project.  Beyond the historical importance of maintaining the extensive archives, OTOY intends to leverage the assets for fan experiences. The company will work with display startup Light Field Lab to recreate a 1:1 scale holographic replica of the U.S.S. Enterprise as seen in the original series. It claims to be able to use the original models seen in filming the series to create a projected replica “indistinguishable from reality” for “one of the world's first fully immersive holographic installation experiences.” What is this, a starship for ants??? The Steel Woods, Out Of The Blue⦁ The Steel Woods, You're Cold ⦁ Jason Charles Miller, Better Late Than Never⦁ Jason Charles Miller, You're About To ⦁ The Lone Bellow, Dried Up River⦁ The Lone Bellow, Count On Me⦁ Margo Price, Long Live The King ⦁ Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real, Perennial Bloom (Back To You) ⦁ Rodney Crowell, Something Has To Change ⦁ Jackson Browne, My Cleveland Heart ⦁ Ted Russell Kamp, Lightning Strikes Twice ⦁ The Rose Petals, Military Man⦁ West Of Texas, Sound Of My Heart Breaking⦁ Blackberry Smoke, Morningside

Jason Charles Miller has come full circle. Formerly the lead singer and front man for the metal band, Godhead, Miller finally returned to Southern Rock and Americana roots.  When the Virginia native was expanding his songwriting chops, he hooked up with great Nashville-based writers such as the late Randall Clay. One of their songs, "Uncountry," describes Miller's individual outlaw heritage.   Miller's latest project, "From The Wreckage - Part One," releases on March 5, featuring the single, "Better Late Than Never." Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jason Charles Miller over Zoom video! Jason Charles Miller is set to release a new album, From the Wreckage – Part One, on Feb. 19, 2021. The first single from the album, “Better Late Than Never,” is available now via all streaming platforms. Straddling the line between rock and country, the new single and forthcoming album will be released through Miller’s own Haunted Mill Music record label, and puts his gritty, passion-filled style on full display.Produced by Jason Charles Miller, Stewart Cararas and Matt Hyde, From the Wreckage – Part One is Miller’s fifth full-length and sixth studio release. The album features several collaborations, including Adam Shoenfeld (Tim McGraw) playing lead guitar and “Cowboy” Eddie Long (Jamey Johnson) playing pedal steel on “Better Late Than Never,” Duane Betts of the Allman Betts Band on “Expiration Day,” and Katie Cole from Smashing Pumpkins on “Day After Day” along with Eban Schletter (film composer) playing the theremin. An accomplished performer with more than two decades of professional experience as a singer, songwriter, producer and voice actor, Jason Charles Miller has quietly established himself as a strong force in the Americana, Country and Southern Rock genres.Released in 2018 by Sony Music, In the Wasteland was Miller’s third full-length solo release. It featured numerous guest appearances, including Rickey Medlocke (Lynyrd Skynyrd), Charlie Starr (Blackberry Smoke), and Dug Pinnick (King’s X). The album expanded on Miller’s roots in Americana and country, dynamically exposing his blues-inspired and southern rock influences. As a solo artist, Jason Charles Miller has performed alongside and opened for country and rock artists including Billy Ray Cyrus, Alan Jackson, Eric Church, Toby Keith, Ashley McBryde, Allman Betts Band, .38 Special, Night Ranger, Gary Allan, Justin Moore, Big Kenny of Big and Rich, and Jerrod Niemann. In 2019, Miller was lead vocalist on the Billboard chart-topping theme song for the ‘Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers’ video game. He has also contributed two songs to the critically acclaimed ‘Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance’ soundtrack and sang backup for Robert Smith of The Cure on the Reeves Gabrels/Robert Smith track “Yesterday’s Gone.”As the frontman and founder of the rock band Godhead, he was the only artist ever signed to Marilyn Manson’s Posthuman Records and sold more than 250,000 albums touring the world with the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Rammstein, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson and Korn frontman Jonathan Davis. In 2004, Miller penned the all-star collaboration "Forever in Our Hearts," a song to benefit the victims of the 2004 tsunami in South Asia, which included Brian McKnight, Mya, Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach), Nate Dogg, and many more.Originally from Clifton, VA, Miller now lives in Los Angeles, CA, where he owns and runs the successful recording complex Central Command Studios. We want to hear from you! Jason Charles Miller grew up in Virginia, the son of 2 writers. He started what I would label a dark, industrial, metal band called Godhead that caught the eyes and ears of Marylyn Manson which resulting in Jason and band toured the world with him for 2 years. 7 Godhead albums later, he started kickin’ out some heavy country/southern rock and has recorded 4 albums and is killin’ it on the road. I’ve seriously enjoyed writing with Jason, and consider him to be one of my most thoughtful, interesting friends. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jason Charles Miller began his career as the singer of a successful hard rock band called Godhead. Just how successful? Godhead has sold over 250,000 records to date - a very healthy sum for an age in which young people just don't buy music anymore. Godhead was the first band signed to Marilyn Manson's label, Posthuman Records; they released several albums, headlined their own tours and shared bills with Manson, Linkin Park, GWAR, Disturbed and others, and Miller reveled in the life of a front man in a rock band. And then things changed when he tested positive for the “C” word - country. There had always been a lot more to Miller than tattoos, attitude and powerful vocals; he had long been a dedicated student of the art of songcraft, and few genres of music celebrate the skill of the pure songwriter like country music. Nashville's Music Row turns out a steady stream of new songs in seemingly perpetual motion, and Miller found that his unique skill set lent itself perfectly to this work ethic. Along the way Miller also learned to diversify, parlaying his successes in music into additional work as an in-demand voice over artist with over 60 credits to his name, with dozens more appearances in video games and live action productions. Unsurprisingly, Miller is a very busy man, and he holds dual citizenship in Nashville and in Los Angeles, where he owns and manages his own recording facility, Central Command Studios.
