Decades before Miami became Havana USA, a wave of leftist, radical, working-class women and men from prerevolutionary Cuba crossed the Florida Straits, made Ybor City the global capital of the Cuban cigar industry, and established the foundation of latinidad in the Sunshine State. Located on the eastern edge of Tampa, Ybor City was a neighborhood of cigar workers and Caribbean revolutionaries who sought refuge against the shifting tides of international political turmoil during the early half of the twentieth century. In Ybor City: Crucible of the Latina South (University of North Carolina Press, 2023), Historian Sarah McNamara tells the story of immigrant and U.S.-born Latinas/os who organized strikes, marched against fascism, and criticized U.S. foreign policy. While many members of the immigrant generation maintained their dedication to progressive ideals for years to come, those who came of age in the wake of World War II distanced themselves from leftist politics amidst the Red Scare and the wrecking ball of urban renewal. This portrait of the political shifts that defined Ybor City highlights the underexplored role of women's leadership within movements for social and economic justice as it illustrates how people, places, and politics become who and what they are. What if illness wasn’t just something to endure — but a sacred space where God does His deepest work? In this episode, Bill sits down with Dr. Robert Marks, a practicing gastroenterologist, and Dr. Dana Blake, a physical therapist and professor, to discuss their powerful book Crucible of Illness. Together they explore a radical biblical perspective: that life-threatening illness, pain, and suffering are not the end of the story, but a portal through which faith matures and grace is revealed. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, a student, a resident or someone walking through your own valley, this conversation will challenge, encourage, and reframe the way you think about suffering, hope, and the God who meets us in the middle of it all.

During the Cold War, hearings led by U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy soon turned into a witch hunt, as paranoia and political opportunism destroyed the careers (and lives) of actors, directors, singers, filmmakers, writers, and prominent scientists who were accused of disloyalty, subversion, and treason. But even as the accusers cited poems, plays, novels, and song lyrics to bolster their attack, literature mounted a counteroffensive, striking back at the powerful in what Marjorie Garber has termed "poetic revenge." In this episode, Jacke talks to Garber about her book A Treacherous Secret Agent: How Literature Spoke Truth to Power During the Red Scare about the long reach of authors like William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Thomas Kyd, John Donne, and others, whose works exposed the lies and hypocrisies of one of America's darkest periods. PLUS Jacke takes a look at Arthur Miller's late-in-life reflections on his own work of poetic revenge, the great anti-McCarthyist play The Crucible. Revolutionary New York: 250 Years of Social Change (SUNY Press, 2026), edited by Bruce Dearstyne and published by SUNY Press, examines what the volume calls the “unfinished revolutions” of the Empire State. In sixteen essays by a varied cast of authors, the book explores efforts to achieve what the editor describes as the full promise of the revolution. Central to the book are ordinary New Yorkers who faced great challenges, such as the Oneida who tried to maintain sovereignty in the era of the American Revolution, women winning the vote, and African American soldiers who served in the United States Army in World War I. Together, Dearstyne writes, they tell a story of “the two-and-a-half century struggle to realize the Revolution's ideals and bring increased freedom and opportunities to marginalized populations.” Dearstyne is the editor of this volume and the author of several books, including The Spirit of New York: Defining Events in the Empire State's History and The Crucible of Public Policy: New York Courts in the Progressive Era. Robert Snyder, interviewing for the New Books Network and the Gotham Center for New York Cit History, is professor emeritus of Journalism and American Studies at Rutgers University. Ep 427 When One of You Is the Problem (And It's Both of You) w/James & Molly

Marriage Therapy Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2026 41:05

Zach sits down with James and Molly Christensen, a married couple and fellow therapists based in Sacramento, who spent more than six years in couples therapy before it actually worked. They burned through eight therapists, logged over a hundred sessions, and came within reach of a marriage that had been quietly failing for years. The fact that they are now both practicing couples therapists themselves makes this conversation something rare: a behind-the-curtain look at what the struggle actually looks like from inside. The conversation gets honest fast. James names what he had to face: narcissism, manipulation, a sense of superiority, and an inability to take feedback without it threatening his identity. Molly describes her own side of the dynamic, a deeply people-pleasing, avoidant woman who had been raised to see relationships as transactional, and who spent years wondering whether her instincts about James were accurate or whether she was the one losing her mind. The turning point for both of them came in the form of an intensive with a therapist who was finally skilled enough to hold them both, call them both out in the moment, and care enough about James to be blunt with him without losing him. James started recording every session and listening back four times. By the fourth listen, he could hear himself clearly. That's when things shifted. What runs underneath this whole episode is a conviction that most couples are doing "recovery lounge" therapy, showing up, going through the motions, and feeling okay about it, without ever actually growing. James makes the case that conflict is not the problem in most marriages. Avoidance is. The goal, for both of them as clients and now as clinicians, is more conflict with less anger, which means developing the capacity to say what you actually think, to your spouse, with genuine care behind it, and to hold your ground when they push back. That's differentiation. That's the work. And if you get through it, Zach notes, the intimacy on the other side is real.Key TakeawaysFiring your therapist is sometimes the right call. If you're not making progress after significant time, the fit may be the problem, not the process.Being resistant to therapy is often not about therapy. Molly's refusal to engage was partly a refusal to let James dictate her path. Understanding the resistance tells you a lot about the relationship dynamic.Narcissism has four components worth knowing: fragility (inability to take criticism), a sense of superiority, indifference to others, and manipulation as a means of protecting a false self. The breakthrough often requires a therapist who combines genuine care with genuine bluntness. Truth without love is abusive. Love without truth is just convenient. Both together is what actually moves people.Conflict is not the enemy. Avoidance is. Couples who never fight aren't at peace, they're just not saying what they really think, and it costs them.Differentiation is the ability to stay grounded in yourself when your partner is not okay. It's not about getting them to back down. It's about whether you can hold your own truth without crumbling under pressure. The tools from research-based approaches like Gottman are only as useful as the people holding them. If underlying traits like narcissism or avoidance are untreated, the tools won't stick. When couples heal, families heal. James and Molly both note that their children have noticed the difference, and that the work they've done has changed the floor their kids are jumping from.Guest InfoJames Christensen Licensed couples therapist based in Sacramento, California. You'll want to pay special attention to the three in the middle, which in our discussion we shorthand into Think It. Plan It. And Do It.  What is it?That's the fun part. SESSION RECAP: CROWN OF THE KOBOLD KING - Mythical Oklahoma has a Lich Problem

I love kobold adventures because they always lie to you. They start with the same sales pitch every time. Oh, it's kobolds. Funny little lizard guys. Maybe some traps. Couple slings. Tiny crown. Cute little dungeon crawl. And then six sessions later you're dealing with ancient dwarven grudges, undead labor theology, emotional damage, cursed relics, fantasy Vecna, and one kobold who should have died three times but keeps showing up because sheer pettiness has apparently made him immortal. Kobolds are never the adventure. Kobolds are what the adventure uses to lure you into the basement. Show Notes This week we did a full postmortem on Crown of the Kobold King and dug into one of Pathfinder's earliest adventures revisited for Second Edition. What starts as a straightforward kobold dungeon crawl quickly turns into a surprisingly layered story full of ancient dwarven vaults, undead corruption, cursed relics, and one increasingly unfortunate kobold king. We broke down the setting of Darkmoon Vale and Falcon's Hollow, the lumber town run by a spectacularly terrible administrator, before diving into the dungeon itself and the history behind Droskar's Crucible. The adventure piles old Torag worshippers, fallen dwarven cultists, Tar-Baphon lore, and necromantic experiments on top of each other until the kobolds become almost incidental to the chaos. The campaign also delivered some incredible table moments. A near total party kill was saved by remembering a forgotten +1 bonus at the last possible second. Sir Thanah evolved from heal bot NPC into one of the emotional anchors of the campaign. Cap Mech somehow transformed from random kobold encounter into recurring rival, revenant menace, and eventual ally. Meanwhile Kirby continued solving problems the traditional way by casting Brick. We also spent time talking encounter design, what worked, what absolutely did not, and why some dungeon sections deserved immediate deletion. Looking at you, anti gravity hallway. By the end, the adventure became less about stopping the Kobold King and more about the people trapped inside the dungeon's history and deciding who deserved saving. Key Takeaways Crown of the Kobold King works well as an introductory Pathfinder 2 adventure and offers more narrative depth than its classic dungeon crawl structure initially suggests. Darkmoon Vale embraces classic fantasy adventure design with starting town, wilderness, and dungeon exploration. The dungeon layers multiple factions together including kobolds, fallen dwarf cultists, undead servants, and Tar-Baphon corruption. Small Pathfinder bonuses matter. A forgotten +1 attack bonus completely prevented a TPK. Sir Thanah evolved from support NPC into one of the campaign's strongest emotional story threads. Cap Mech became an accidental standout character through repeated appearances and escalating rivalry. The adventure benefits from adding consequences and time pressure rather than treating events as static. Some encounters are excellent while others feel dated and benefit from modification or removal. Commanders continue proving they are extremely effective force multipliers. Brick remains a valid tactical solution. Welcome to the RPGBOT Podcast. If you love Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and tabletop RPGs, this is the podcast for you. Fresh off his trip to the Crucible to see the snooker, Ed Balls brings a question for him and George Osborne to answer on just how similar politics and snooker are. Is it all about the long game? Or do you take the risky shot when the opportunity arises? Are the two even similar? And do Ed and George know enough about the sport to say for certain?Sunday Times columnist Charlotte Ivers then asks whether politicians are just copying TV shows like The Thick of It and The West Wing in their communications. George explains the truth in this, while Ed argues The West Wing displays an idealised version of politics and that the script writers often draw from the real life drama in politics. Former Tory Chairman Andrew Feldman and one of our listeners then ask a pair of questions related to the public acceptance of AI, with our own guru George explaining how companies can sell the public on the benefits of AI and bust some of the myths around job losses caused by AI.Finally, Ed and George answer the biggest question of all: do podcasts like this one influence voters? They explain how it's been seen to happen already in the US, what things might look like in the next general election, and even manage to discuss Celebrity Traitors…We love hearing from you, so please don't forget to send all your EMQs to questions@politicalcurrency and make sure to include a voice note of your question or send a question to our social media handles:
