Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 23, 2025 is: bastion BAS-chun noun A bastion is a place or system in which something (such as an idea) is protected and continues to survive. // The restaurant is a bastion of the region's ancient culinary traditions. See the entry > Examples: “In 2017, Harlem residents took to the streets to protest Keller Williams after the real estate company began marketing the neighborhood's 15-block southern radius (between 110th Street and 125th Street) as ‘SoHa' (South Harlem) without their approval. The biggest worry? That newcomers would attempt to erase Harlem's history as a civil rights nexus and bastion of Black American culture. In response, then-New York Sen. Brian Benjamin introduced legislation that banned unsolicited name changes and fined real estate firms for using names like SoHa.” — Jake Kring-Schreifels, Spokeo, 26 Mar. 2025 Did you know? Bastion today usually refers to a metaphorical fortress, a place where an idea, ethos, philosophy, culture, etc. is in some way protected and able to endure. But its oldest meaning concerned literal fortifications and strongholds. Bastion likely traces back to a verb, bastir, meaning “to build or weave,” from Old Occitan, a Romance language spoken in southern France from about 1100 to 1500. Bastir eventually led to bastia, an Italian word for a small quadrangular fortress, and from there bastione, referring to a part of a fortified structure—such as an outer wall—that juts or projects outward. Bastione became bastion in Middle French before entering English with the same meaning. You may be familiar with another bastir descendent, bastille, which refers generically to a prison or jail, but is best known as the name of the Parisian fortress-turned-prison stormed by an angry mob at the start of the French Revolution; the Bastille's fall is commemorated in France by the national holiday Bastille Day.

Dante Oganov is getting ready to make another run at Callista to take over her criminal holdings in Lumencia. Dante, with help from Lincoln's friend and former lawyer Dillon Cantrell, set up a bounty to test Lincoln. Lincoln had to defeat a swarm of lagrounes, water-based undead that attacked from beneath the Bendelson Bridge near downtown. Dante is on the run from Vestinian, who once tasked Dante to find Billy Middleton. Dante failed. Vestinian wants payback. He hired famed bounty hunter Icepick to find Dante. Icepick, and his familiar Herbie, a giant, diamond-plated tortoise known as a diamortuga, had an early run-in with Lincoln and Billy at the bridge just before Lincoln & co took out the lagrounes. Now, Lincoln has been summoned to Cordis for a talk with Juanita Socorro, the Clostator of the Bastion. Lincoln does not know what she wants, but he has no choice but to obey her summons. Billy is joining Lincoln on the trip. Together, they will visit the Clearinghaüs pawnshop and find Billy's signature weapon. Lincoln, of course, is unaware that Billy has been sneaking off to Cordis for magical training sessions with Morgan Stone, the former assistant of Kellius Droman and former protector of Droman's daughter, Delilah. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series of series on the independent games of the last couple of decades, starting with 2012's Fez. We set the game in its time, talk a bit about its precedents and the landscape of independent games in the middle of that console generation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Single-digit cubes Issues covered: our real plan or lack thereof, early games, the indie revolution, the influences back and forth, the pressure of the space we're in, a highly visible indie, games from that year, sequels vs the different stuff in the indies, democratization of the market, the console cycle, always online fiasco, getting on the Steam store, opening console store fronts to independents, limitations, the broadband market and bandwidth costs, the publicity on the store, low cost of goods, continuing power of retail, a two dimensional puzzle game in a three dimensional world, charm, great music and MIDI with an unsettling feel, rotating the world, rebooting the game, achieving the effect without perspective, the Trixel engine, having a hard time getting it, trusting the game, having a new lens on a game, taking the time to infuse the whole experience, team sizes, telling a different story with an existing language, having fewer people to get on board, independent publishers and producers, influences, glitch aesthetics, map language, climbing on the sides of things, stopping time while the world rotates, how the editor might work, games from the past, CONFIG.SYS (dang it, could not remember), skipping over generations. Magda successfully operated the Cursed Armor of Sir Arnault the Pure. Will the armor provide a cheat to her agoraphobia? While possessing the armor, can she leave the Old Stone Church for the first time in years? Lincoln's brother Lukas and sister Sophia showed up unannounced at the Old Stone Church and delivered a message — the Clostator, the leader of the Bastion, demands Linc's presence in Cordis. To the Franks siblings, the Clostator is also known as “Aunty Juanita,” as she was once the fighting partner of their father, Jacoby Franks, known as the greatest monster hunter of all time. Aunty Juanita doesn't do things like demand Lincoln's presence — so what is it she wants? Within the metropolitan city of Bastion, three citizens, heavily in debt to Associated Reanimators, are staying at a transient hostel in the Killduck Borough when the collectors come calling. No peaceful resolution is found. Afterwards, the debtors are sent by the nun Sister Seven to meet with an elderly woman named Ladya Hope, who hires them to retrieve the treasure of the deceased famous explorer Percy Butterworth in Plankton Downs. The team starts off right away, headed to an underground electric conveyance, intent on beating their competition, cryptohistorian Ronin Friendly.
The Halászbástya or Fisherman's Bastion is one of the most recognisable monuments in Budapest, and a major tourist attraction, not just for the beauty of the space itself, but for the views of the city it affords. As such, it's buzzing with people, and where there are tourists, there are local musicians, street vendors and so on. This recording captures multiple accordion players playing traditional tunes among the crowds of tourists. Recorded by Cities and Memory. ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights. "I loved the accordion melodies in the field recording so I wanted to use one of those as a basis of the new piece and overlay other instruments over it. I tried to capture the joy of the original recording and add a slightly repetitive bass line to help push it along." Classic (x2). (Warlock #2) In which the Warlock ongoing series is fun, and fun is good; people should maybe leave Doug Ramsey's grave alone; Tony Stark is probably not in touch with the Indigo Girls; the heroes skate awfully close to the “no killing” line; Bastion gets exhumed, rehumed, and re-exhumed; you should really read the Avengers Academy Infinity Comic; and you remain the best listeners of any podcast, ever. About 120,000 Jews live in Toronto, a city of about three million residents. Eight out of every ten hate crimes in this city involve what local officials call an “anti-Jewish occurrence.” Then there is Montreal, with its 90,000 Jews and its total population of about 1.8 million. There, in the three months following October 7, 132 hate crimes were directed at Jews, which is ten times the number of total reported hate crimes as during the entire year of 2022. In fact, there has been, across Canada, a 670-percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents since October 7. This is in a nation of about 40 million, of which just 350,000 are Jewish. These data come from a blockbuster article by Terry Glavin, published last week. In Canada, hardly a week goes by, it seems, where synagogues are not vandalized, burned, or shot at. Moreover, the conventions that predominate elite institutions, government, media, and NGOs all hold as an orthodoxy that Israel is a unique evil, guilty of every modern sin. How did liberal, polite Canada become such a menacing place for its Jewish citizens? Terry Glavin, a columnist with the National Post and a senior fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, joins Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver to discuss his recent article in the Free Press, “The Explosion of Jew-Hate in Trudeau's Canada.” This article tells the story of how a liberal country collapsed into progressive ideological commitments, which, when applied to immigration policy, and laced with the intersectional logic of a racialized social doctrine, lost the capacity to resist institutional capture by the activists who most hate the Jewish people and the Jewish state.
