In this episode of the Pulse podcast, we’re discussing shared decision-making in healthcare with Dr. Jeffrey Kline, researcher and emergency physician at Indiana University School of Medicine. We met with Dr. Kline at the American Academy of Emergency Medicine Scientific Assembly to discuss how evidence-based medicine has changed the transforming role of shared decision-making as well as his thoughts on the future of healthcare. “Evidenced-based medicine used to be a cabinet that was full of old textbooks whose spine was falling apart, and you would go pull the textbooks off the shelf, and there'd be one on dermatology that was the most torn up because everybody would be looking at it to find a picture of a rash to figure out what the patient had.”

Jeffrey Kline is a lifelong runner, multisport coach and most recently retail store owner in Portland, Oregon. We chat about a recent run that he did as a fundraiser for his Patagonia Expedition Race. It's interesting because it's a 12-hour treadmill run. Yup 12 hours on the same treadmill. Jeffrey Kline also has stage 4 prostate cancer which he speaks about. Clinicians use nonverbal cues from patients, including their facial expression content and variability, to make inferences about how ill a patient is. However the diagnostic accuracy of facial expressions as a method of physical diagnosis hasn't previously been scientifically examined.Research just published in EMJ is the first to examine this question, and provides proof of concept that patients with serious cardiopulmonary disease processes manifest facial expressions with decreased variability and emotional content than patients with no serious cardiopulmonary diagnosis. EMJ editor Ellen Weber discusses the findings with lead author Jeffrey Kline, professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine.Read the full paper: http://goo.gl/MFvaxC
