The first time I saw these guys was in the documentary The Kid after finishing Tahoe 200 — and I immediately thought:“Who are these dudes?”There was something different about them. The energy. The edge. The authenticity. Then I started seeing more about HyperlyteNot just as another nutrition company… but as a movement. And then I saw them at the races.I saw Jeremy at Leadville.Emory out there racing the mountains himself. Then Jeremy lining up at Run Rabbit Run.That's when it clicked:They aren't just building products for ultrarunners. They ARE ultrarunners. In this episode, we dive into:• Jeremy's journey from addiction and thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail to crushing 100-milers like Run Rabbit Run, Bear 100, Cruel Jewel, and Rim to River• Emory's path from 300-lb college football lineman to Leadville, Wasatch, High Lonesome, and The Bear• What 100-mile racing teaches you about life, fatherhood, and staying present• The biggest mistakes ultrarunners make in long races• How to balance business, family, and high-level training• Why they built Hyperlite differently (and what was broken in endurance nutrition)• The philosophy behind simple fueling: 100g carbs, 1,000mg sodium — done right• Building a brand that actually reflects trail cultureThis one is raw. It's real. And it's about more than just nutrition. It's about identity, resilience, and building something that actually matters. If you care about ultras, performance, community, and pushing your limits — this one will fire you up.Let's ramble on.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Opening Weekend Is Upon Us + What Happened To Remco?! | The Race Communiqué

Life in the Peloton

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2026 70:41

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP   Here we go, guys, we're just a few sleeps away from Opening Weekend! Just thinking about these races gets me absolutely pumped. I can smell the Belgian chaos already; the embrocation, the frites, the beers! What better way to prepare for the return of proper bike racing than sitting down with my old mates Tom Southam and Luke Durbridge for this month's episode of The Race Communiqué.   Before we jump into a quick preview of Omloop and Kuurne, we look back on the early season races that give us a good insight into who's going well, and who's got work to do. Of course Remco Evenepoel won't be racing this weekend, but we discussed what on earth happened to him in the UAE! He had such a strong start to the season, to see him burst like that on the steep desert climbs was pretty surprising!   Omloop kicks off the classics season this Saturday, and it is set to be an absolute pearler. The start list is absolutely stacked with talent, but there are two big names still waiting to start their road season; Pogi and Van Der Poel. Without these big five star favourites, the race is actually pretty open. I go through my picks in the preview, so have a listen and send me some praise when one of the twelve or so riders I mentioned probably does OK.    My favourite thing about Omloop is the finish; the Muur - Bosberg double that used to be the finale of the Tour of Flanders, but was dropped years ago in favour of the Kwaremont - Paterberg combo we see today. These climbs have everything; double digit gradients, brutal Belgian cobbles, and - most importantly - atmosphere. I can't wait to see throngs of Belgies at the roadside soaking it all in (along with Life In The Peloton's Race Radio p/b SHOKZ's own Harry & Stu recording their first episode of the season!)   In this month's Talking Tactics, Southam gives us the lowdown on his opening weekend; Faun-Ardèche Classic and Faun Drome Classic. These are new-school French one day races that are a notch below Omloop, but still absolutely stacked with big name riders looking to start their seasons; Jorgenson, Simmons, Skjelmose, Morgado, Bernal, Healy, and - the best rider in the world - Scaroni.   Durbo's Pelochat has some great insight this month. He's been keeping a close eye on some of the new tech nuggets from inside the Pelo, as well as how the new UCI rules on things like aero helmets are going down.    Guys, this month I wanted to introduce a fun new segment I've called “Yeah…Nah.”. You know when you hear something, and you think it sounds like a good idea at first…then you give it a bit of thought and - actually - na.  “Hey Mitch, you gonna go to Durbo's party on Saturday?”  “Yeah…….nah”   You get the idea. I give the boys a few ideas to get their take. Breakfast beers? Working the gate in the echelon? Sitting on in the Grupetto?    Of course, we wrap things up with the CommuniQuiz. It's Southam's turn to be quiz master this time, and he's written his quiz on his absolute favourite topic - something he's totally, unequivocally obsessed with; UAE Team Emirates. It's a great one and I actually learnt a thing or two about the history of the best team in the bunch right now.    Guys get yourself a few Trappist beers out the fridge to come up to temp, make sure you've got plenty of mayo ready for your frites, and get ready for the classics to begin; I know I'll be watching.    Until next month,   Cheers! Mitch P.S.  Don't forget you can also watch The Race Communiqué over on our Life In The Peloton YouTube channel. You won't want to miss the reactions to Luke's Pelo Lingo in this one!   The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! Track, plan, and train smarter - just like the pros. Fitness doesn't guarantee success on race day.You can have the highest VO₂ max in the field…You can run insane workouts…You can show up tapered and ready…And still fall into the mental traps that sabotage your race.In this episode, I break down the biggest mental traps ultrarunners face — from going out too hard, to walking when you should be running, to not eating when you don't feel like eating, to letting negative self-talk take control. These are the exact lessons I've learned from my own 100-milers, 200-milers, Cocodona, Tahoe, Javelina — and from coaching hundreds of athletes on the Everyday Ultra Racing Team.We cover:• Why “what is predictable is preventable”• How to pace properly using RPE (and avoid blowing up early)• The trap of thinking you're fitter than you are (and how to ground belief in data)• When to push late in a race• Why walking when you don't need to is costing you HUGE time• How to stay disciplined with fueling (even when you're sick of gels)• The power of breaking races into small chunks• Why you need a deep toolkit of mental strategies• How to handle negative self-talk when it shows upThis episode is about building discipline.Because discipline doesn't care about feelings. It cares about execution. If you want to race smarter, stronger, and more confidently in your next ultra — this one is for you.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Caleb Swartz started racing cyclocross when he was eight years old, but the discipline has been dwindling in the US since the 2010s, and the writing has been on the wall for any American racers wanting to make a sustainable career from it. Last year, Caleb started branching out into a few gravel events just to see where it would take him, and he ended up with two standout performances at Grand Prix races — 11th at Little Sugar and 6th at Big Sugar. This year, he's going all-in as one of the new faces on the GP roster. Payson sat down with Caleb after a surprise encounter in Girona to talk about how he's navigating training for a season unlike any he's ever done, how his years of hardscrabble work behind the scenes as a privateer have set him up for this moment, and the tough industry realities that have led him to transition away from cyclocross. They also talk about his collegiate racing days at Marian, graduating during the pandemic, and the high-speed crash he had at Big Sugar that didn't stop him from nearly making the podium. This episode was brought to you by Osprey and TrainingPeaks. Is fasted running sabotaging your performance? Are you accidentally under-eating on your hardest training days? This week, we break down the seven most common nutrition mistakes runners make, from calorie restriction at the wrong time to blindly copying elite protocols, and explain why the science says you probably need to eat more, not less.We cover why your gut issues might actually be a training problem, not a food problem. We talk about why "clean eating" is often just restriction in disguise. And we explain why doing what Kipchoge does probably isn't what you should be doing.Plus, we answer listener questions on accountability and whether high-carb fueling causes diabetes (spoiler: it doesn't). And Coach James Nance joins to talk about coaching multi-sport athletes, helping runners recover from overtraining, and his TrainingPeaks hot take that might surprise you.In this episode:Why restricting calories on training days backfiresThe truth about fasted running and morning workoutsHow to actually fix gut issues during exerciseWhy "clean eating" can become problematicWhat 90-120g of carbs per hour actually means for recreational runnersHow to evaluate nutrition advice and follow the moneyStudies and resources mentioned are linked below.Get involved: Join our Foothills coaching community—one-on-one coach access, twice-monthly roundtables, and a supportive crew of runners. $10/month with code FOOTHILLS10 at microcosm-coaching.com.Questions? microcosmcoaching@gmail.comREFERENCES:Burke, L. It's been a long winter, but here we are, guys, the first podcast from Life In The Peloton of the season and oh man, is it a good one. I got in the booth LIVE with Tom Southam and Luke Durbridge at the Tour Down Under to unpack the Aussie national champs, talk a little bit about the TDU, and have a look ahead to what we can expect this racing season.  We kick off with the man himself, Turbo Durbo, giving us the inside line on the Aussie National Champs. If you watched the race, then you'll know Luke came pretty close to bagging himself the top step, but it didn't quite work out that way. He gives us a bit of insight into how the race unfolded and how Jayco AlUla reacted to the final result.  In this month's PeloChat, Luke goes through every single Aussie in the men's World Tour bunch. From neo pros to old hands, Luke shares a bit of info and his thoughts on all the riders to see who's representing the land Down Under overseas in 2026.  Southam's Talking Tactics takes a deep dive into the rest of UAE. Away from Pogačar and his Tour de France A-Team, what are the rest of the team going to do? That squad is stacked with absolute hitters, so how are they going to manage themselves and make sure everyone's happy? Tom gives us his thoughts.  You know what's coming next, we round it out with a classic CommuniQuiz. We're honouring the soon-to-retire Aussie legend, Simon Clarke, with a quiz all about his awesome 17-year career. How many Grandys did he race? Which monument did he only do once? What teams has he ridden for in his pro career? You'll have to listen to find out!  Guys, I'm so excited to kick off the 2026 season. I'm on the ground at the TDU picking up heads of eps with some really special riders so keep your eyes peeled for those dropping soon.  Cheers, Mitch P.s. This year, he'll be racing alongside Keegan Swenson and Matt Beers as part of the new Specialized off-road team. Mads joined Payson in Girona to talk about his reluctant departure from the WorldTour, how becoming a dad has changed everything, and why he prefers doing heat training to altitude training. This week James (and Will at the beginning) is joined by Hunter Allen, co-founder of Training Peaks, long-time elite level cycling coach to pros and US national teams, and the man who literally wrote the book on power meters back when torque measurement was just a twinkle in an SRM engineer's eye. That book was, prosaically enough, called Training + Racing With A Power Meter, and it put Hunter at the pioneering frontier of what would become the gold standard in cycling metrics: watts.Last year Hunter was back with his new book Training + Competing With A Continuous Glucose Monitor, and in this episode we discuss why continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are set to become the new power meter and how they and the sports science involved are already behind the uptick in speeds in the pro peloton. In short, CGMs can help a rider and coach work out precisely when to fuel, and to what extent, for maximum performance, and that means Pogačar and co are breaking more records.Hunter also talks about how to understand training data, the relationship between heart rate and power, managing training loads and fatigue, and how to develop better nutrition strategies to ride faster. It's a get the kettle on kind of pod, plus maybe fetch a pen and paper, because Hunter knows his stuff and he goes pretty deep.Find out more about Training + Competing With A Continuous Glucose Monitor hereInterview begins at 9.59------------------This episode is brought to you by the Hammerhead Karoo GPS bike computer. When Kevin Vermaak left his job in IT to found a brand-new type of bike race, he had no idea how much money he'd lose up front or how successful the resulting event would become. 20 years in, and the Cape Epic is one of the most famous bike races in the world. After leaving it behind in 2016, Kevin began mulling over a new idea — a gravel stage race that explored a completely different part of South Africa. This year, he launched Gravel Burn, a seven-day event in the Great Karoo. It took years for Cape Epic to grow into what it is today, but Gravel Burn attracted some pretty fierce competition from year one, including Tom Pidcock, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, Matt Beers, and Lauren Stephens. In this episode, Kevin tells Payson about how a series of globe-trotting adventures in the early 2000s inspired him to start the Cape Epic, why he thinks Gravel Burn has the potential to be even bigger, and the logistics of planning such a remote, multi-day event. He talks about the things he hopes to do better next year, why he's actually glad that the infamous stage six of the race had to be neutralized, and why he needed nearly twice as many staff members as there were race participants in order to pull the whole thing off. This episode was brought to you by TrainingPeaks and Osprey. Instagram: @withpacepodcastYouTube: Payson McElveen Email: howdy@withpace.cc

Katie shares guidance on aligning training with purpose, taking unstructured time when needed, and exploring new modalities or distances instead of forcing an event. We then dive into the main topic: how to build a repeatable, low-friction Basic Week using principles from James Clear's Atomic Habits to make training obvious, attractive, easy, and satisfying. We cover practical strategies for habit formation, systems that support consistency for time-crunched athletes, and why sustainable routines matter more than intensity. We also discuss winter training tools like uphill treadmill, how time off during the holidays can unexpectedly boost fitness, and why fitness metrics on Strava, TrainingPeaks, and Garmin should be interpreted cautiously. Scott Bowden set out two weeks ago to tackle a 580km route across Tasmania. His goal was to beat Payson's FKT from 2021, but most importantly, he just wanted to finish. With 11,000 meters of elevation, multiple river crossings, all types of weather, and punishing terrain, the route is brutal to say the least, and when Scott found himself struggling to keep his body temperature, he thought about pulling the plug. In the end, he did finish, and he joins Payson to swap war stories. Before discussing the ride, however, they talk about how Scott got there in the first place. Send us a textWhat does it take to chase Ultraman while working 12-hour shifts in emergency care? We sit down with Erica Riley—critical care nurse, coach, and multi-time ultradistance triathlete—to unpack the systems, habits, and mindset that make high performance sustainable in a busy life.  From 3 a.m. Zwift rides to meticulous time boxing, she shows exactly how to build consistency without sacrificing your health, your job, or your relationships.Erica takes us inside the toughest days of lockdown, when PPE, quarantine hotels, and strict radius rules forced radical creativity: ocean swims inside a five-kilometer bubble, stacked run commutes, and eight-hour trainer marathons. That crucible led her to Ultraman and a new goal—to not only finish but compete—under coach Tim Franklin of KOA Sports. We explore the art of crew selection, live-stream storytelling, and keeping a tight bond with the UM Australia Ohana.Nutrition and strength become Erica's quiet superpowers. Longtime plant-based, she refined protein intake, embraced whole foods, and saw clear changes in lean mass and visceral fat. Race fuel is simple and effective: Infinite custom blends, salty chips when the gut turns, and a well-timed orange Fanta for mood and carbs. Off the course, her secret weapon is reformer Pilates—45 minutes that deliver strength, mobility, posture, and injury prevention for time-poor athletes who need durability as much as speed. We also dig into coaching. With Synergy Sports Coaching, Erica builds plans for real people—shift workers, parents, and professionals—using TrainingPeaks as a living diary. She treats sessions like meetings you won't miss, teaches sleep hygiene around rotating rosters, and helps athletes fit training into life, not the other way around. Along the way, she shares favorite races (hello, Cairns and Nha Trang), a brutal and beautiful lead-in at Alpine Ascent Extreme, and the mindset work that turned perfectionism from procrastination into fuel.If you want practical tools to train smarter, eat better, and perform under pressure, you'll find tangible tactics you can use today. Long before Sweet Spot Training was mainstream, it was developed inside a secret, private beta group of coaches and sport scientists that I was part of. We were testing a new power-based performance model that would later go on to become the Performance Manager Chart inside TrainingPeaks. And what we discovered & developed changed endurance cycling training forever: there was a  training intensity that built the most fitness for the least fatigue. And that this type of training enabled time crunched athletes to develop a massive aerobic engines that previously weren't possible with Zone 2 training. That discovery became Sweet Spot Training. I'm joined by EF sports director, Tom Southam, and Jayco Alula pro cyclist - and Aussie national road champion - Luke Durbridge, for one last Race Communique to wrap up the podcasting year.  I wanted to kick off by running through the season we've just witnessed. There's so much racing going on from January at the Tour Down Under right the way through to Lombardia just last week, it's easy to forget just how great the racing has been. Durbo, Southam, and I discuss our favourite wins of the year - some quite obvious ones and some that you might have forgotten about. Then, we go through some quick-fire awards: best kit, worst kit, most overhyped rider, biggest loss to the peloton, and more!  Of course, we've got our regular PeloChat - where Durbo rounds up all the retiring riders this year - and Talking Tactics - where old mate Southam gives us the final scores on the doors for this year's relegation battle, which was thrilling right down to the final day of racing. The Vuelta is over and the world champs is well underway, which means we're nearly at the end of the 2025 racing season! It's really crept up on me, I can't believe it! On one hand, it feels like it's flown by, but on the other - the Spring Classics feel like forever ago.    This month's communique focuses on the World Champs over in Rwanda. It is an absolutely brutal course this year; almost 270kms with over 5000m of climbing. Whoever wins this is going to be a thoroughly deserving winner. Remco's already got himself a rainbow jersey in the TT; can he double up with another road race title?    What about Pog? He looked pretty knackered in the TT at the world champs, didn't he? Still cooked from the Tour or just reaching the end of his rope? I can't quite believe I'm saying this, but there's a big question mark over him ahead of the road race! But just watch him make me look like a cock knob and win by 9 minutes solo now.    There's some strong looking underdogs in the mix too; Del Toro, Healy, Carapaz, McNulty, Pidcock, and loads of other in form hitters that could spring a surprise and overcome the two main favourites. We discuss all the favourites as well as make our predictions.    In this month's PeloChat, Turbo Durbo gives us some insight into the end of a pros season - limping or striving through the last few races. Usually, a rider gets their provisional calendar at the start of the year, and it runs through to the Vuelta. After that, it's a case of “we'll see”. There's still races to go, but so many riders are sick, injured, or just cooked - so pulling together a decent squad to knock out the last few races of the year becomes a tricky task. Riders have to be adaptable throughout the whole season.    Southam's talking tactics dives into UAE's record breaking season - the most wins in 1 season by any team ever. How have they managed this? How does the team manage so many world class riders? How have they won so much but still lost the Giro on the last day, and seemingly piss the Vuelta away by hunting stages? Tom shares his take on UAE's questionable tactics at points throughout the year that still haven't stopped them winning almost everything.    The quiz this month is all about the world's TT. I'm quiz master, and the boys go head to head. Brace yourselves, I'm thinking next month's season finale is going to be a bumper CommuniQuiz edition.    Guys, I hope you like listening to this month's communique as much as I love recording it.
