Today's guest is Avital Miller. We are talking about HABITS or at least that's how we start. This is my fourth and final episode in a special mini-series on habits. I personally think that habits are one of the most important skills that we can work on to improve our training and sometimes our lives. Today I share 2 tips that I see get in the way of changing behavior and setting up desired habits. They are when you actually don't want to do the thing you think you want to do and when you are unaware or unclear of the benefit you are getting from the current behavior. Avital Miller is an Alternative Healer. What does that have to do with habits? Give this episode a listen and let me know what you think. Today's guest is Andrea Liebross. We are talking about HABITS. This is my third episode in a special mini-series on habits. I personally think that habits are one of the most important skills that we can work on to improve our training and sometimes our lives. There is one big mistake that I see my clients repeat over and over when they are trying to change a behavior and today I share what that is. It's being honest about your current state and behavior. Andrea is a coach and she shares some of the common behaviors clients work with her to change and how she helps them. She also shares a few amazing books that she finds helpful. Today's guest is Julie Lamb. We are talking about HABITS. This is my second in a special mini-series on habits. I personally think that habits are one of the most important skills that we can work on to improve our training and sometimes our lives. When we talk about habits we often think of them in terms of good or bad. In this episode we talk about whether that's accurate and whether we really can change bad habits. Today's guest is Cathy Sirett. We are talking about HABITS. Why? Great Question. What I have noticed is that the people who are able to make their workouts into habits are much more successful than those who don't. This is true for people who are taking up a walking routine or training for an Ironman. This is why we are doing not just one but a series of interviews about habits. Enjoy! My guest today on the Mile after Mile podcast is Nycole Jones. Nycole is a Tricologist who works with many different textures of hair. She calls herself a Glammother. In this episode we talk about hair care. I learn about different hair textures because I only know my hair. We talk a little bit about the some of the culture behind the idea that women who take care of their hair don't exercise. So that you don't think I made this up here is a link to a research article about black women, hair care and exercise. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/236916832_Hair_Care_Practices_as_a_Barrier_to_Physical_Activity_in_African_American_Women Articles like this were common in the early 2000's which is also when I found my way to endurance sports. Nycole shares that in her experience women and men will adjust their workout schedule to maintain certain hairstyles and how she suggests making it work because exercise is a part of a healthy lifestyle. She teaches me that I may be washing my hair … pretty much incorrectly. Nycole shares with me her thoughts on Swim caps from the perspective of a person who cares for hair and not necessarily the person wearing the cap. Nycole introduces me to the idea of a “protective style” or a hair style that we choose to work with different parts of our lifestyle. Nycole educates me on other parts of exercise that may exercise may impact. This is a solo episode from Amy with a quick motivational coaching tip. I ask you, the listeners a question and I do hope that you'll share your answers with me.
Today’s guest is Angie Dye. Angie is a business owner, part of a busy household with a spouse, teenagers and several pets and she enjoys a hobby of triathlon training including usually at least one 70.3 distance triathlon a year. In this episode of the podcast we talk about how she got her start in triathlon. How she decided that she was ready to step up to a longer distance race. Then we talk about how she and her family worked together to make that work. Finding the time to train and race is a pretty popular question when we start talking about longer races. That’s where the idea for this topic of conversation came from. If you have been thinking you’d perhaps like to train for a longer race having the opportunity to hear from people who have made it work in a variety of situations will hopefully relieve some stress, inspire and motivate you that it is possible. We share some racing stories and even talk a little bit about how she has managed her training during the pandemic. She shares that she and some friends did a special 2020 challenge which I think is really creative. You have to listen to hear the details. Angie Dye is a Registered Dietician specializing in Sports Nutrition, Digestive Health and Intuitive Eating. This is a solo episode with the host Amy. These are my thoughts and opinions about some stuff I think I'm seeing in the business of endurance sports - specifically my thoughts on what I think is a consolidation within the magazines published in the world of hobby enthusiast endurance sports including triathlon. These are my opinions. I do make mistakes. If there are mistakes in this let me know. I do try my best to get the information as correct as I can and I specifically report a bit of historical subscription data for Triathlete Magazine. Here is my source for that information https://3cv17g24bm2c1nem9g2xlfw7-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/TRIATHLETE-2019-Media-Kit_web.pdf I also share what I think is perhaps a sign of the future of media for endurance sports ... maybe - but it's a guess. An opinion. Thank you for listening - Amy Stone

Quick solo episode to update you on what I'm up to as your host. In this episode I talk about the Miami Virtual Marathon and the American X Heritage Run. I also share my possible event schedule for 2021 and I share that I'm moving. I'm literally moving from one house to another and there is a chance that the podcast release schedule would be a little bit unpredictable in the next few weeks.
My guest today on the Mile after Mile podcast is Eric Winter and we talk about Ironman VR races. You might be familiar with what Ironman VR is but if not we do explain what they are. Many people have done a few virtual races during the pandemic. Eric Winter started to do the virtual Ironman races and he went on to do each and every one of them. Some are long and some are short. Eric talks about how he’s gotten them all done. The virtual races from Ironman started at the beginning of the pandemic lock down and they just kept going. I recorded this interview a few weeks before it aired but Eric and I know each other in real life. I can tell you that as far as I know the streak is still alive. As everybody knows there were very few live triathlon events during most of 2020. In Florida we did have a couple of race directors who did find a way to hold events. One of those companies is Game On Race Events. Today I chat with Willie Savoie from Game On Race Events to go behind the scenes and hear how they made it happen. Willie shares her history in event production in Florida and the story of Game On Race Events. We talk about what events they put on. What rules they put in place. I ask how they figured out what to do and whether they had any help or guidance along the way. We chat about who came to these events and from where. Willie shares some tips for participants who are headed out to races with new rules and precautions in place for what you might expect. Being in the live event business is never easy but in 2020 it was extra challenging. Thank you to all the race directors who gave it the extra effort to make it happen including Willie and the team at Game On Race Events. My guest today on the Mile after Mile podcast is Jaimie Monahan. Jaimie is an endurance athlete. She’s completed Ironman triathlon including Ironman Louisville and many adventures including the NYC Marathon. These days her focus is on marathon swimming and even ice swimming. We each have had our own ways of filling time during the pandemic and Jaimie created some unique swimming adventures for herself which we chat about. This is an interview that even after it was completed has stuck in my mind. I was inspired while chatting with Jaimie and every time I think back to our discussion that feeling grows. Jaimie loves to swim around the island of Manhattan. Yes, that island. New York City. We talk about how long that is and the challenges that go with it. Then we chat specifically about two separate achievements she has made this year. First, she swam a lap around Manhattan each day for seven consecutive days. Then in the fall she put together a marathon swim of 4 non-stop laps around the island of Manhattan. Both of these - we think are first time achievements. I ask Jaimie where she came up with these ideas and how she stays motivated. What she shares is applicable to lots of other parts of our lives. I also ask her about many different specific details of the logistics of her swims. You can find Jaimie Monahan on instagram @jaimie.monahan and at www.jaimiemonahan.com Thank you Jaimie for being a guest on the Mile after Mile Podcast. My guest today on the Mile after Mile podcast is Corey Harrington. Corey and I connected on Facebook which is how we do things in 2020. Corey shares with us where he calls home and some of his adventures before he was chasing Ironman Triathlon. Corey was a professional baseball player and we do talk about that because it’s not everyday that I get to interview a former pro athlete. Corey raced Ironman Florida which was the only full Ironman to happen in the US in 2020. We talk about that and his training. Part of Corey’s path to Ironman includes beating a long time opioid abuse cycle. Corey had kept this personal story to himself but he hopes that by sharing his journey he can inspire others along the way. There is a strong connection between clean living or sobriety and endurance sports and we talk about that. Corey takes us through his training. He trained almost entirely by himself. We talk about his race day and how his race went. I ask Corey if he now has the Ironman bug and whether he’ll do another Ironman race in the future. You can reach out to Corey Harrington on Instagram @coreyharringtonnew Thank you Corey for being a guest on the Mile after Mile Podcast. _________________________________________________ Information about the Mile after Mile Podcast and all episodes of the show can be found at www.mileaftermilepodcast.com Keep up with the host Amy Stone at www.amysaysso.com Looking for Podcasting Gear? This is the story of an epic adventure in the Grand Canyon. I chat with Cathy Yndestad about hiking rim-to-rim-to-rim. Which is sometimes abbreviated r2r2r. We are going to talk about hiking in the Grand Canyon and how and why Cathy did that in 2020. Cathy shares how she planned her trip including all the important details. We talk about Phantom Ranch. She shares what gear she took. She shares how she prepared for the hike. It can be hard to find information about planning this hike and Cathy shares a lot of important details that she learned in planning and then executing the plan for this hike. We talk about how long the entire trip took and what her recovery was like after. Thank you Cathy Yndestad for being a guest on the Mile after Mile Podcast. Today on the Mile after Mile Podcast is race director Fred Sommer. Runners and Triathletes in Florida may recognize the name Sommer and Sommer Sports Events. We talk about how Fred got his start in racing and producing races. He’s been producing events for 37 years. One of the fantastic things about this interview is that Fred Sommer has been a part of triathlon since pretty much since the beginning of the sport. He shares a story about setting up the tri club Central Florida Triathletes (CFT). And working with Tri Fed which existed before USAT. He also talks about the USTS series. Putting together races before there were even bike racks or chip timing. He describes it as the “wild west” but says that it was fun. We talk about what races used to cost in the 1980s. We chat about many of the races that Sommer Sports produces which includes the Great Floridian which has been around since 1990 Florida Challenge which includes the Intimidator which started in 1985. Florida Xtreme Triathlon which is a multi day triathlon that goes from coast-to-coast in Florida. He shares a lot about what makes Clermont, Florida a special racing destination. The Great Floridian is what we call an Independent Full or Iron Distance triathlon and there aren’t very many of these that exist in the US. Fred and I chat about this and it’s a wonderful discussion about the growth of his races and the sport of triathlon overall. We talk about how the business of race production and event promoter has changed over time in terms of customer expectation and logistics like permits and even how customer complaints have changed over the years. Like all events in 2020 Sommer Sports had to cancel and/or defer a lot of events in 2020. But Sommer Sports was able to hold some events and we talked about what some of the challenges Sommer Sports faced were and how they were able to resolve them. Fred shares an inside look to how this worked for him for a variety of events over the spring and summer. Sommer Sports was able to hold the Great Floridian including the full-distance event. We talk about some of the ways they changed things up to keep it safe. I want to thank Fred Sommer for being my guest on the Mile after Mile Podcast. Frankie Ruiz is born and raised in Miami and if you don’t know him let me share that he’s passionate about running. He is one of the founders of The Miami Marathon, he coaches a local high school cross-county team and he leads a large group of very popular community run clubs, AND he’s the Chief Running Officer at Life Time Fitness. We go back in time and chat about Frankie’s start as a runner and how it came to be that he was part of the team that started the Miami Marathon. He also shares some of the local Miami Marathon history which is fun for any locals. We recorded this episode in November 2020 and it’s been a very challenging year for people who plan live events. In this episode we chat about some of those challenges from the perspective of an organizer who is managing the expectations of a vibrant running and triathlon community and trying to balance that with being a race director in charge of a major marathon and other live events in Miami all of that during this crazy year filled with uncertainty and the unknown. We also talk about virtual races and some of the things that were considered in deciding not to hold a live 2020 version of the Miami Marathon. Frankie Ruiz explains the many options with the Virtual Version of the 2020 Miami Marathon. He shows the prototype of the medal which you cannot see in the audio version but you can find in the video of the interview. There’s a lot more in this interview that you’ll enjoy. My guest today is a running friend of mine in Miami. Miami is a city famous for its large and vibrant international community and our very close proximity to Cuba. I found out about this story when somebody posted a photo of Alexis Garcia in a kayak. It’s an amazing story and one that I’m happy to be able to share with you today. Alexis and I discuss how he traveled from Cuba to the United States. We talk about his start in running. We discuss how he moved up to distance running and ultra marathons. We chat about how he got the idea to go back to Cuba and run across Cuba. I interview Alexis in this podcast but you will hear him speak often of his wife Marlene who is a big part of his story of running across Cuba. We also talk about what big goals and challenges Alexis Garcia has coming up. After listening to this interview it is almost definite that you will want to see the movie they created about his run across Cuba. It is named Run Across Cuba. Please reach out to them at runacrosscuba.com and they will arrange a way for you to see the movie. My name is Amy Stone and my pronouns are she/her. My guest on this episode is Patti Flynn (she/her). The first time somebody asked me my pronouns I thought I had accidentally scheduled myself onto a grammar class show. Grammar is not actually my favorite thing. In fact, I have a lifelong aversion to using commas correctly. After a moment of scrambling to remember what pronouns were and how we are supposed to use them I stammered something for an answer that I don’t remember now. Fast forward a few years and I’ve learned some since then including why not making assumptions about pronouns is significant. In this episode of the Mile after Mile Podcast I interview Patti Flynn who is a transgender runner and triathlete. Patti shares her background in sport. We talk about favorite races and what makes them favorites. We talk about inclusivity and safety. We talk about representation. This is an amazing conversation.
