The Apple store in Downtown Detroit is opening Friday. So if you're going to the opening - or frankly, on any Friday night - where should you get dinner or go out downtown? Get a bite to eat? Have a fun time? Norris and Jer have some thoughts. Plus, Jer went out to Belle Isle to get an idea of what's happening with the Belle Isle Commons project that's ahead. It's still in early stages and looking for a lot of community feedback. The City of Detroit ended the fiscal year with a surplus.. but there are economic storms nationally and locally, and thae administration is getting ready for it. #FactsMatter, the Citizens Research Council of Michigan podcast
Guy Gordon chats with Citizens Research Council president Eric Lupher about his study examining how an admissions tax on sports and entertainment venues could help offset some of the costs of providing public services that support these venues and their visitors. The study, commissioned by the City of Detroit's Legislative Policy Division, focuses not only on Detroit but also on several other Michigan cities that could benefit from revenues generated by an admissions tax. These revenues could be used to provide benefits such as property tax relief and to invest in attracting future national events to Michigan. Among the many issues the report, Evaluating Local-Option Admissions Taxes in Michigan, examines are the economic impact of events, admission tax revenue estimates, tax design and policy considerations, revenue generation from comparable cities, the advantages and disadvantages of local-option taxes, and the viability of Michigan having an admissions tax. In a Nutshell: Detroit is one of the few major cities in the U.S. that does not levy an entertainment/amusement/admissions tax. While this means the city is not taking advantage of a revenue source commonly used by other cities, it also means that the city can learn from the processes and experiences of others. Depending on how an authorizing state law would define the base and the tax rates authorized, Detroit could yield upwards of $50 million from an admissions tax. Revenue from an admissions tax could be used to enhance city services, diversify the city's revenue streams, provide property tax relief, and put into a fund that could be used to draw major national events to the city. “Several Michigan cities serve as regional hubs for culture, commerce, sports teams, concerts, and conventions,” said Eric Lupher, president of the Research Council, adding there are even more that host events that, relative to their size, similarly incur service costs. “Detroit stands alone as the largest city in this role, with four major professional sports teams, concert halls, theatres, and other venues that attract attendees from throughout Southeast Michigan and beyond.” The study concludes that while a new state law would be needed to authorize local admissions taxes, the state legislature should consider allowing cities to impose an admissions tax to enhance revenue streams, help cover costs associated with hosting events, and provide property tax relief.

Linda writes “I wanted to share my experience I had back in April of this year. This was in a large natural area in Southeast Michigan. I was suppose to meet up with my research/ investigating friend on a Friday night in May at a camp. The weather was not so great on the way down. It was storming off and on throughout the afternoon. When I got to the camp nobody was there. My friend Gabe was still working and had not been able to come yet. It wasn't dark yet but raining so I stayed in my van. Finally after texting back and forth, we established that He would come out the next morning because the radar showed a huge storm approaching and there were already flash flood warnings out. So as twilight approached I decided to go outside even though it was sprinkling and load up on my drinks for the night so I would not have to get out again after dark in the storm approaching. I did not have a fire going didn't see the sense in that. After grabbing two pops from my cooler I approached the opening of my van the slider door on the side. I had miscalculated my timing and now it was fairly dark with almost no light..I looked toward my left out into this neighboring field there were 4 sets of eyes kind of greenish, and they were heading right at me. Now I figured they were about the right height for coyote or deer but I was a bit confused as to why they were coming at me. I grabbed my little flashlight from behind the seat and turned it on the eyes and yelled out in a very stern voice “Whatever you are that's far enough!” The creatures stopped and I realized now they were whitetails. All adult deer no fawns or bucks with them. In that second I thought to myself Why are these deer running up to me that's not normal behavior, light went off in my head, they were trying to escape a predator. Soon as I thought that they all raised their heads and looked back at the wood line on the other side of the field. Then bolted across the field taking off and away to the left. I started panning the wood line and bingo there about 7 or 8 feet ( a guess) up in the air were two huge round forward facing eyes set wide apart..And NOW its watching me instead of following the deer. I called out “I see you” in a casual voice but loud enough to let it know I knew it was there. It kept watching me, I grabbed my bigger flashlight thinking i would light this thing up with my 1500 lumen but no all I could see was the eyes watching me still. Now its very dark and sprinkling harder. I decide to get into my van and get my thermal out thinking Im going to try and thermal this thing. Its still standing in the tree line. I step up into my slider door turn around and sit down on my bed, grab my key fob thinking id shut the slider door while its raining and I'm getting my thermal out..now I hit the keyfob and as the door slides shut I hear this very loud growl/roar and it sounds like it is 6 feet from my van!! The door finishes shutting I hit lock and alarm. I am in shock now and sitting inside in the dark thinking no way am I going back out there and am I going to have to climb over the middle console to jump in the drivers seat to escape?! I listened intently waiting to see if my door was going to be torn off or what this thing was going to do and then the torrential storm hit …I was not going to turn on any interior light and would just keep quiet..even though it rained most of the rest of the night i could hear screams and howls throughout the night. Something screamed and the coyotes sounded off going nuts…Gabe showed up next morning and crossed over there and found suspicious tracks…upon his return to camp he was going to go back and cast the one but it had been scuffed out, very strange. I was happy to not be alone anymore at camp Ill tell you that! Then in June in a different area I was attempting to hike a trail but stopped on top of a berm to look at a print and got charged from behind in the woods behind me but I couldn't see it..you are welcome to call me if you want the rest of that experience. Since I have talked to you on the phone years ago.”

This week, Ryan, Bob, and Jason swap stories from their latest fishing trips—but of course, it doesn't take long for things to go off the rails. Ryan unleashes a classic rant about googans, lake etiquette (or lack thereof), and how Southeast Michigan feels more packed than a Walmart parking lot on Black Friday. Somewhere between the complaints and the chaos, the guys get weirdly philosophical as Ryan hits Bob with some deep questions that nobody saw coming. Jeffrey Mosher welcomed Butch and Niki Irwin, the father-daughter team behind the Comfort Keepers of Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio. He had several questions for them in this interview just ahead of Fathers Day: The Origin Story: "Butch, your pitch mentions your grandfather as a key inspiration. Can you tell us more about that memory and how it shaped your understanding of care and led you into this field?" Father-Daughter Dynamic: "Niki, how has working with your father, Butch, influenced your professional path? What are the unique strengths each of you brings to running Comfort Keepers as a father-daughter team?" Defining "Care": "Your pitch states you're 'redefining what it means to care.' In your own words, what does that mean to you, and how does Comfort Keepers of Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio embody that philosophy?" Clinical vs. Personal: "You emphasize a 'clinically informed, deeply personal approach.' Can you give us an example of how those two elements come together in the care you provide?" Building a Legacy: "Butch, as a multi-generational business, what does 'building a legacy' mean to you in the context of senior care? What hopes do you have for the future of Comfort Keepers?" Challenges and Triumphs: "What have been some of the most significant challenges and, conversely, the most rewarding triumphs you've experienced in nearly a decade of running this business?" Community Impact: "How do you see your presence impacting the communities of Monroe and Brooklyn, Michigan, and Perrysburg, Ohio? Are there specific needs you address in these areas?" The Caregiving Industry: "From your perspective, what are the most pressing issues facing the senior care industry today, and how is Comfort Keepers adapting or leading the way?" Family Involvement: "Beyond the two of you, how have other family members become involved, and what roles do they play in the operation?" Future Vision: "What's next for Comfort Keepers of Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio? Jez Vedua-Cardenas currently resides in Southeast Michigan, where she was born and raised. Jez is a Registered Dietitian (RD) and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and works with WIC (a supplemental nutrition program of the USDA for Women, Infants, and Children.) Through her work, Jez realized there was a knowledge gap among many health and wellness professionals working with immigrant communities. Drawing on her own experiences growing up as a Filipino-American, and surveying the experiences of others–mothers in particular–she created educational materials for nutrition professionals that highlight traditional Filipino foodways. She emphasizes the connections between food, identity, and what it means to nurture and show love, and examines how assimilation pressures and modern food practices can impact eating patterns and health issues.

I would consider today's guest, Kate, a born caregiver. I could sense her caring spirit immediately. Before losing her 12-year-old son, Ephrem, Kate worked as a birth doula and was in training to be a midwife. She loved supporting new young parents as they welcomed their new babies into the world. After Ephrem died suddenly from complications from an aortic dissection, Kate no longer felt like she could continue working as a birth doula so she became a home health aide. One evening, Kate was assigned to be with an elderly man who was nearing the end of his life. Instead of offering support as a family welcomed new life, she sat with them as they prepared to say goodbye. Kate realized something that night - Ephrem's death had unveiled a new calling for her. She knew that hospice work was now what she was meant to do. Instead of supporting families as life entered the world, Kate would help people and their families at the end of life. But hospice work was not Kate's only new calling. After Ephrem's death, Kate attended Luella's Lodge (a place near and dear to my own heart) for a retreat for bereaved parents. Kate found herself signing up for retreat after retreat. Each one gave her more strength. During one such retreat, Kate sat down with Carrie, co-founder of Luella's Lodge asking what she thought of the idea of Kate starting her own retreat center, fashioning it after Luella's Lodge. Carrie was thrilled. Kate and her husband founded The Beekeeper's Well to offer support to bereaved families. Kate's dream is to eventually have a physical retreat center for bereaved parents in Southeast Michigan, but that will take time. For now, Kate offers weekly Sunday night drop-in Zoom support groups as well as grief coaching. Kate also hosts 'Home Retreats' anywhere in the US or Canada. These retreats are meant for smaller groups. Kate goes to a home (or often a weekend rental) and brings the retreat center experience to the bereaved. Kate finds local experts in yoga, breath work, massage, and other healing modalities and brings the magic of a grief retreat to grieving parents wherever they need it.
