In our previous study of 2 Timothy 2:1-13, we discovered that the Roman persecution against Christianity created a shortage of trained Bible teachers because of the many who abandoned the Faith. Paul assigned Timothy the task of training up a new cadre of Bible teachers (2 Timothy 2:2). In 2 Timothy 2:14-19 Paul emphasized to Timothy the need to train his students to avoid the practices of false teachers, and to work hard to teach God's Word correctly.

This weekend sees the final Outlaw event of 2022, Outlaw X. To this date, there are only two men who have completed every single Outlaw triathlon starting with the first Outlaw full in 2010. During that time, Gary Goacher and Graham Yare have completed 32 Outlaw races and have become known in the Outlaw family as “The Last Men Standing”. This is no easy task! The series has grown from one event to five and with each passing year the task of staying healthy, training for, racing, and then recovering from each race becomes that little bit harder. Prior to this weekend's event, I took the time to sit down with Gary and Graham to talk about their Outlaw journey and how it has shaped the last 12 years of their life, including: How it all started A growing friendship What happens when the streak is broken Planning family holidays around races Overcoming illness and injury to get to the start line If you're interested in joining Gary and Graham at one of the Outlaw events for 2023, entries are open via www.outlawtriathlon.com. This Sunday at NTC Massena, Pastor Justin Cardinal continues our series on Soul Training! This week we dive into Reading the Bible. When we read the bible, we need to approach it not as an intellectual pursuit, but as a call to action! After reading the Bible, we would be asking ourselves, what should i do about this?
I sat down with my good friend and Training Bible author, Joe Friel, to discuss his latest book Ride Inside. We also discussed Joe's advice for the aging athlete as well as some of Joe's top tips for any endurance athlete looking to optimize performance.Joe's BlogJoe's BooksTwitter @jFriel
It wasn’t long ago that riding inside was something most of us did only when the weather was bad, or the days too dark, or we were pressed for time. Flash forward to today and indoor cycling is quickly becoming a discipline many people focus on for its own sake. It’s no longer a second-rate alternative. And that’s why, today, we’ll focus entirely on indoor cycling and its many nuances. The author of the famous “The Cyclist’s Training Bible,” Joe Friel has now co-written a new book with Jim Rutberg. “Ride Inside: The essential guide to get the most out of indoor cycling, smart trainers, classes, and apps” is the basis for our discussion today. Friel, with decades of experience coaching athletes, indoors and out, and Rutberg, who has long worked with coaches on disseminating their training philosophies, share their thoughts on the future of the sport and why we’re seeing more indoor cycling. They also discuss the specifics of indoor workouts, and why what works outside isn’t always the best practice inside—and vice versa. That and much more from Joe and Jim. We also hear from three riders from Team Saris-The Pro’s Closet. Jennifer Real, Holden Comeau, and Matt Gardiner, all members of this eSports cycling team, have been racing for years almost exclusively on Zwift, and they help us understand the intricacies of this gaming-like platform: How to use the draft; why knowing the courses makes such a difference; how to set up your trainer, and much more. We also touch upon the all-important training aspects of indoor cycling. Time to ride inside. Let's make you fast! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In part four of the "In Training: Spiritual Growth Exercises" series, Pastor Ernie leads a panel discussion Bible Reading and Mediation. What does it look like to hide God's word in your heart? How do you pass on the importance of the scriptures to your children? What difference does the Bible make in the way you live your life? This panel shares their real struggles and honest attempts to grow in their time in scripture. For more information on the Evangelical Fellowship Church in Steinbach, please visit www.efchurch.ca.

I am REALLY excited to say that today’s episode I get to interview the founder of Training peaks, Coach Joe Friel! So this is really cool because if you guys haven’t heard of Joe before, he has been coaching since 1980 and was also the publisher of the Training Bible in the late ’90s, in what has since been used by several national sports federations to train their coaches. Now Joe noticed that in the 90’s that coaches were still using fax machines and writing training plans out on paper and he came up with an idea of the world's first online training log for coaches to work with an unlimited number of athletes. Although Joe currently only coaches a few athletes, he mostly focuses on training emerging top-level coaches on best practices in preparing endurance athletes for competition. Consider him a coach of coaches in endurance sports and we are fortunate to have him on the podcast to talk about his philosophy and methodologies of training! In this episode, you’ll hear about how he came up with the features of training peaks including the Training Stress Scores, the Intensity Factors, and how coaches can maximize its use to track their athletes. We also chat about the Training Bible and dive into his training philosophies and methodologies so that we can take these ideas and incorporate them into our training! We also go over some very practical training advice that we can all start to incorporate into our training plans! It’s an excellent podcast today so sit back, relax, and enjoy the episode!
We all make mistakes. No one trains and races perfectly, which can be frustrating when so often those mistakes are made out of honest effort and a desire to perform at our best. But we have a choice in how we treat our mistakes. One way is to get frustrated and beat up on ourselves. The other is to realize that admitting when we make a mistakes is an opportunity to improve and be a better athlete. With that second perspective in mind, today we’re going to talk about some of the most common mistakes that we see in athletes — even pros. And we’re going to hear from a variety of athletes, coaches, and experts who have been around the block a few times. They know all the mistakes, but more importantly they know what to do about them. A few of the things we will talk about: The one thing that almost all of our guests said was the biggest mistake – hint, don’t try too hard to figure it out. Being coachable, or more generally being willing to listen, know yourself, and identify your mistakes Warm-ups and cool-downs — they can have a big impact if done right, and also if done wrong Nutrition — though you may be surprised by what our guests say is the biggest mistake Too much intensity — do you really think Coach Connor and I were going to have an episode about mistakes and not bring that one up. Bike fit and biomechanical mistakes — one of our guests today is Dr. Andy Pruitt who has made a very successful career of helping athletes find success by fixing these often-overlooked mistakes. Racing mistakes and why one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to never risk making mistakes. And finally, we’ll talk about a more philosophical mistake — not knowing when to move on. Our primary guests today are Dr. Andy Pruitt and Frankie Andreu. By now, you should know who Dr. Pruitt is, one of the foremost experts on cycling ergonomics and medical issues in athletes. Frankie Andreu was a longtime professional, a mentor to many, a team manager and director, a race commentator, and a legend in the sport. Along with our two primary guests, we checked in with several other respected experts including Joe Friel, author of the “The Cyclist’s Training Bible” which was recently updated. Joe has coached over a thousand athletes in his career and has seen it all. So we had to ask him what he thinks are the biggest mistakes athletes make. We also speak with Jared Berg, who’s the head physiologist at the University of Colorado Sports Medicine and Performance Center. One of the issues with making mistakes is we can often convince ourselves that it doesn’t actually affect us. But you can’t fool the physiology and Jared sees that inescapable truth every day. Next we pulled in an old interview with Grant Holicky, formerly of Apex Coaching with Neal Henderson and now with Forever Endurance, who talks about a mistake that we love to harp on — training in moderato. Finally, Trevor touches base with Houshang Amiri, a former Canadian National and Olympic team coach who’s worked with many of the best cyclists in Canada. Like Joe Friel, Houshang has seen it all and had some interesting insights on the importance of being prepared. Now, remember that practice makes perfect. I swear we never mess up in this episode. So let’s make you fast!
In today’s podcast I talk to Michael Ovens (Strava), a 41 year old runner from Jersey in the UK. So far he improved from a 5 hour 15 marathon down to 3 hour 18 marathon, with his eyes set on Sub 3 marathon goal next. I am convinced he will reach this goal as well. I really like how honest Michael was in this conversation. We all learn from our training and racing mistakes and in today’s episode Michael shares several of his painful mistakes and ups and downs in training, starting with his five hour marathon. He hit the wall so hard that he thought he got hit by a bus, several great stories there. This made him relook at his entire approach to training and racing. He is now feeling so much better about his training and nutrition with reduced stress levels. We dive deep into a variety of topics around his training, MAF and low HR, nutrition, racing and more. Many members in the Extramilest Facebook group submitted questions for this podcast, so thanks everyone for your great input! On this week’s podcast, I’m really excited to be chatting with one of the world’s leading triathlon and cycling coaches. In 1996 Joe Friel wrote the Cyclist’s Training Bible and in 1998 he followed that up with the Triathlete’s Training Bible. He also coauthored with Gordo Byrn the Iron distance training book “Going Long”, and more recently he wrote the book "Fast after 50: How to race strong for the rest of your life”. Joe has been instrumental in the development of Training Peaks as the world’s number one online training diary platform (now run by his son, Dirk Friel) and to this day travels the world sharing his coaching philosophy and inspiring the next generation of coaches, including myself. In this conversation, I really wanted to get deep into the subject of how we should all be training once we get past 50. If you haven’t reached that age yet, that’s no excuse to bypass this conversation. I can predict with a high degree of accuracy that you will reach this age at some point so this IS of relevance to you. In this episode you will hear Joe Friel share his thoughts on: Why his inspiration for writing this book was entirely selfish Myths of ageing and why we should ignore them Some of the age changes that WILL happen to you What we must start doing differently as we grow older Key to maintaining performance as we age up past 40, 50 and beyond. I hope you enjoy this conversation. It’s a topical subject and one which I implore you to not only listen to but act upon and then share with your friends. Joe Friel has always given back to the endurance sports community he loves, but it was only when he faced an illness that left him on a training hiatus that he sat down to write the first of his many books. Since then, Joe has dedicated his life to endurance sports as the co-founder of TrainingPeaks and a triathlon and cycling icon. This episode, Dave Schell sat down with Joe to discuss how the story of the Training Bible series and TrainingPeaks began, how endurance sports coaching has evolved since the 1980s, and advice Joe has for coaches.
Cycling can be a fickle sport. Coaches come and go; new, exciting, revolutionary ways of training take the sport by storm then grown stale; riders at the local training race who were once unbeatable age and fade from the front. Few things have permanence in this sport. But there’s been one thing that has stood the test of time, that seems to have been there since most of us attempted our first interval workout: Joe Friel’s “Cyclist’s Training Bible.” For many of us, reading that book was our first step towards more dedicated training. This spring Joe released his fifth, and hopefully not the last, edition of the book. Trevor and I had a chance to talk with Joe about the newest edition. We came to the interview with a list of questions that we felt only touched on the key parts of the book and by the hour mark we were barely a quarter of the way through our list. But what we did talk about was really compelling stuff. We touched on everything from periodization to energy systems, to Joe’s method of research…believe it or not, it has a lot to do with hundreds of 3”x5” note cards. What is the central theme of this podcast? Perhaps we’ll just call it picking the brain of one of the most experienced cycling coaches in the world. Our varied topics included: • How Joe’s philosophy to coaching has changed over the five editions of the book, and why with this most recent edition he decided to completely rewrite the book. • How new technology has changed coaching and why Joe recommends a shift from volume-focused training to a training-stress focus • What we mean by intensity and how both polarized and sweet spot training play in • The three physiological assets that determine our level as cyclists — specifically aerobic capacity or VO2max, anaerobic threshold, and economy • And finally, we touch on periodization. Joe was the one who brought periodization to cycling and unfortunately, we were barely able to scratch the surface on this fascinating subject. Hopefully, we can convince Joe to come back for an entire episode on the topic… (In fact, there is plenty in the book we don’t even mention, but there’s a reason it’s called the Training Bible.) In addition to Joe Friel, our guests include: Frank Overton, the owner of FastCat coaching here in Boulder, CO. Frank has been a part of the history of cycling himself, helping in the early days when they were just figuring out the power-based metrics we now take for granted. But even Frank remembers The Cyclist’s Training Bible influencing him as a cat. 4 cyclist. And we talked with LottoNL-Jumbo rider Sepp Kuss who gives a very modern pro perspective on periodization. It’s not the old school traditional periodization of a dedicated base period and race phase. We, unfortunately, ran out of time to talk with Joe about it, but one of the big changes in the latest edition of the book is an entire chapter on the various periodization alternatives.
Welcome to another episode of the Orange Mud Adventure Channel Podcast. Today your hosts are myself, Josh Sprague and Paul Jesse from Orange Mud. We’re excited to talk today with Adam Zucco. Adam has been coaching triathletes for over 15 years and, along with his partner Joe Friel, founded Training Bible Coaching. Adam has coached countless athletes to PRs, Kona Qualification as well as US Olympians. Today we’re going to dig in to the topic of training with a Power meter. A power meter is a device that basically measures the power output of a rider. Most use strain gauges to measure torque applied and combined with angular velocity calculate power. Adam is an expert in this arena, Paul and I, well, not so much, so we’re really excited to dig into how it can be used to improve your training and racing on the bike as well as the in-roads currently being made in running with power measuring devices. Adam is such a stud that 8 of his athletes have qualified for the Ironman World Championships in Kona this year! Subscribe via iTunes Joe Friel returns to the show and discusses his revamped and just released Triathlete's Training Bible. This is the best selling triathlon book of all time, with roughly 300,000 books sold, and instead of just updating it he started from scratch and rewrote it. We talk about the major revamps to the book. In addition to that we covered a wide range of topics. Near the end of the interview we talked about his career as he went from teacher to running store owner to triathlon store owner to coach to author. Joe started his writing for the Fort Collins newspaper and his column ran every single week for 20 years from 1981 to 2001. He did not like writing when he started and now he has a passion for it. He wrote his first book, the Cyclist's Training Bible, and thought it might sell a few hundred copies total. It sold 1000 copies the first month and 5000 copies the second month and now he's written 16 books. Joe is always a good listen so don't miss this episode.

She's done several marathons and an ultra, and while she's had a desire to do a triathlon for a while, she didn't start training until she recently registered for the race. Topics discussed include: Open water swimming Intervals Pedal stroke Transitions Yoga Eric's Heart Rate Zone Summary An illustration of force applied to pedals, from Joe Friel's Triathlete's Training Bible.
Coach Jim Vance joins the podcast as a repeat guest to talk about his new book, Triathlon 2.0: Data-Driven Performance Training. Jim worked on this book for 4 years before it’s release in early 2016. It’s a detailed book for serious athletes willing to look at their training data and use it to improve. Jim was a former professional triathlete and now, as a well known coach, he has become an expert in analyzing training data. This book builds on concepts in Joe Friel’s Triathlete’s Training Bible and uses charts and graphs to show how to use and understand your data. Even if you don’t use a power meter, and most experienced athletes should, you can still learn how to use data from your GPS unit to improve your running. I feel confident in saying this will be one of the most useful books for serious triathletes. http://www.coachvance.com/ Does Running Shorten Your Lifespan?
Joe Friel has trained endurance athletes since 1980. His clients are elite amateur and professional road cyclists, mountain bikers, triathletes, and duathletes. They come from all corners of the globe and include American and foreign national champions, world championship competitors, and an Olympian. He is the author of ten books on training for endurance athletes including the popular and best-selling Training Bible book series. He holds a masters degree in exercise science, is a USA Triathlon and USA Cycling certified Elite-level coach, and is a founder and past Chairman of the USA Triathlon National Coaching Commission. Joe conducts seminars around the world on training and racing for cyclists, multisport athletes, and coaches, and provides consulting services for corporations in the fitness industry. In this episode of the podcast, Christopher Kelly interviews Joe about a wide variety of topics. It’s a rare glimpse inside the mind of a pioneering coach that you’ll enjoy. Curiosity drives Joe Friel to seek answers for athletes. Joe Friel is a man driven by curiosity. His blog contains thousands of articles he’s written over the years, chronicling his studies of diet, exercise, and everything related to training and performance. He wants to know why things happen the way they do and how to use that knowledge to make improvements in health and performance. That curiosity is what has made him into a world-class coach, and he’s willing to share it with anyone who cares to listen. In this conversation, Christopher dives deep into that knowledge to find some gems. Fast After 50: An instruction manual for masters athletes. In 1998, Joe wrote the book Cycling Past 50. Turning 70 prompted him to revisit the science, and he started writing up his latest findings on the blog. The feedback from that series of posts was overwhelmingly positive, and so Joe was prompted to start work on Fast After 50. The book is well-referenced, accessible and prescriptive. Good coaches bridge the gap between science and experience. “If you don't look good, we don't look good” - Vidal Sassoon. Coaches make recommendations that work, even if they’re not backed up by science. Often, the science is playing catch up. For example, coaches knew that the Fosbury Flop and aerobars worked long before there was science to show why. That’s why it pays to know someone like Joe! Strength training is an incredibly important part of the mix for older athletes. That’s because as we age, we naturally begin to decline in muscle mass and therefore, strength. The right kind of strength training, varied through the year will enable older athletes to maintain their ability to compete at a high level and preserve their health at the same time. Joe Friel recommends working the larger muscle groups during the off season on a regular basis, as much as 3 times per week. Then, during competitive seasons, cutting back on the degree of weight training, but not stopping altogether. When followed, this practice helps older athletes maintain their strength, which impacts endurance and performance. Get the details to Joe’s thoughts about strength training on this episode. Here’s the outline of this interview with Joel Friel: [0:05] Welcome and introduction of Joe Friel - coach and author. Joe Friel Joe Friel recently released his 14th book, Fast After 50. It's geared to all athletes training and competing after age 50. Most, but not all, of the interview is centered around the book, but there is much in here that will apply to all triathletes. Topics discussed include sleep, high intensity training, recovery, and items listed below. Joe also gives some insight into his research process. Joe discusses three key factors in athletic success: aerobic capacity lactate threshold economy As athletes age, economy tends to remain stable, VO2 max suffers the greatest loss, and lactate threshold declines more slowly. Maintaining or slowing the rate of decline in these areas should be a focus of training. Joe talks about three key factors that negatively affect aging athletes. They are: Loss of aerobic capacity/VO2 max Loss of muscle mass Negative trend in body fat percentage Part of the performance loss of the aging athlete is a result of a reduction of high intensity training. This leads to a decline in aerobic capacity. Joe talks about the importance of keeping this in, or safely adding it back into, your training regime. Joe generally defines high intensity as a 9 effort level on a scale of 1-10. It must be added very slowly into a training plan to reduce the risk of injury, starting with short 15 second efforts and gradually increasing the dose. For a more detailed recommendation refer to Joe's book. I asked for a specific example using high intensity training for a 55 year old triathlete training for an Ironman. With a consistent and well planned training schedule, this athlete would include high intensity training throughout the plan, with a peak dose in the Base 3 period. This would be 12-16 weeks before the race. After that it would be reduced to a maintenance level. More From Joe? I asked Joe about future projects, and he just started work on a new book that is slated to be completed in 2016. The project is being kept under wraps, but he said "It'll be my major work of my career as far as writing books." Bigger than The Triathlete's Training Bible? "Yeah." Subscribe via iTunes Big Show! Episode 8 includes part 1 of an interview with Joe Friel. Joe is a long-time and well known coach. His long list of books includes The Triathlete's Training Bible and he is a co-founder of TrainingPeaks.com. We discuss the paleo diet, the importance of training consistency, the key to periodization, and zone 3 training. Before the interview I explain functional threshold power (FTP) and intensity factor (IF), two important concepts covered in the interview. Subscribe to the Triathlete Training podcast by searching Triathlete Training in iTunes. Functional Threshold Power (FTP) Defined as the power you could hold for 60 minutes in a race. To test in training do a 30 minute test on a day preceded by 1-3 easier days. This will approximate your FTP because your output in training will normally be lower because motivation is lower than in a race. Here is a link to an article I wrote about determining heart rate and power zones. Intensity Factor (IF) Intensity Factor, also known as IF, is determined from your FTP. It’s a ratio of your output in a given workout to your FTP. For example, if your FTP was 200 watts, and you did an interval at 160 watts, this would be an IF of .80 or 80%. IF only describes the intensity of a workout or an interval. Duration does not factor into the calculation (there are additional metrics that factor both intensity and duration). From Joe Friel’s Power Meter Handbook, here are some IF guidelines at different distances. The numbers below apply to age group athletes. Elite athletes will race at a higher IF. Ironman: .60 to .70 Half Ironman: .70 to .79 Olympic triathlons, standard distance duathlons, and sprint races: .90 to 1.04 Joe Friel Interview Paleo Diet Joe introduced the paleo diet to triathlon. He became of aware of the paleo diet concepts in 1995 when he met Dr. Loren Cordain. Joe tried it and found that it worked. He now talks about foods we should and should not be eating. He no longer labels it as the paleo diet because people have such strong reactions to diet labels. Dr. Loren Cordain wrote a book called The Paleo Diet. In 2005, Joe and Dr. Cordain wrote The Paleo Diet For Athletes. Here is Dr. Cordain explaining the Paleo Diet in a 51 minute YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52A3ayfxfTs Joe’s thoughts on diet changed recently when he read a piece by Tim Noakes. Joe has been experimenting with less sugar/fruit and more fats, such as olive oil, eggs, avocado, and coconut. He avoids man made fats. Training Consistency Joe has been looking at Chronic Training Load (CTL), a measurement available within the software at TrainingPeaks.com. When people miss a workout they get a 2% drop in fitness, as measured by CTL, which is a measurement of fitness. The takeaway is that missing a workout is a big deal for fitness. For an athlete that trains over 10 hours/week, they get back the lost 2% at the rate of .3% per hour of training. If you miss one hour of training, it requires 6 hours of training to get back the fitness, as measured by CTL. The most important part of training is consistency. It’s more important than hard workouts and and miles. Key To Periodization The closer an athlete gets to their peak race, the more like the race their training must become. The harder those workouts become, the easier the easy workouts must become. Here are examples of specific workouts, based on that premise: Ironman athlete 2 weeks before the race Three hour bike ride. 2 hours at race intensity in zone 3/70% intensity factor (IF) on route similar to the Ironman course. Ironman athlete 5 weeks before the race Anticipated 5-5.5 bike split: 5-6 hour ride with 4 hours at race intensity (70% IF). Anticipated 6-8 hour bike split: 6 hour ride at 65% IF. As anticipated bike split goes up, IF should decrease in the workout. Triathlon or duathlon with 80 minute bike split,
