This episode covers a lot of ground. On the heels of last week's episode where we had to edit out our discussion of women in special operations, that's exactly where our conversation this week starts. We originally connected with our guest because of his LinkedIn post about a woman in her senior year at the Naval Academy who has been selected to attend BUD/S, but we quickly move on to focus on how mindfulness fits into human performance. Jon Macaskill is a retired Navy SEAL Commander turned consultant and mindfulness and meditation teacher. He was born in South Africa but grew up in Ruston, Louisiana. After graduating high school, he served briefly as an enlisted sailor in the US Navy before receiving an appointment to the US Naval Academy and graduating from there with a BS in mathematics 4 years later. He also has a Master's degree in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School.During his 24-year Navy career Jon served in Iraq, Afghanistan, off the coast of Somalia, and in Panama. After retiring, he served briefly as the Deputy Executive Director for the veteran nonprofit, Veteran's PATH. He now runs a podcast called Men Talking Mindfulness; does keynote speaking engagements on developing leadership, grit, and resilience; and owns his own consulting company, Frogman Mindfulness. In all three roles, his desire is to improve cultures and individuals through mindfulness, meditation, vulnerability, and compassion.Jon's wife, Beka, also served in the Navy and is now a civilian Orthopedic Physician Assistant. Together, they are the proud parents of three children, and after an adventurous 6 months as a family in an RV, they have settled on a small farm in Colorado Springs.

CLOs today must ask: Is our work building lasting, relevant skills right now? Are we delivering business impact? Is the work building or diminishing L&Ds effectiveness and credibility? If the answer to any of these questions is no, then perhaps it is time for a skills accelerator approach. This is the title of a CLO Lift report and in this episode, we unpack what it means and why it's critical to us, in L&D, but more importantly to our organisations and employees. KEY TAKEAWAYS L&D professionals need to become true business partners instead of just trainers and focus on the development aspect of their role. When you focus on data you are effective, and the rest of the business understands that data. Leverage AI and simulations to deliver fast.  Understand the relevance of each skill. What is it about that skill or new technology that will enable the learner to do their job better? When your business does something new, be a part of the rollout so truly relevant learning is available from the start. BEST MOMENTS “Capability building can't just be through learning programs. It needs to be truly employee-centric.” “If we can spend less time churning content, we'll be able to spend more time developing people.” “The scope of an L&D leader can no longer be just what training program.” Heather Stefanski Heather Stefanski is a Partner and Chief Learning and Development Officer at McKinsey & Company, overseeing Learning & Development for 45,000+ global colleagues and leading the People Data and Analytics Teams.  During 28 years at McKinsey, she has held various roles in talent acquisition, professional development, and learning. She has an MBA and MA in Education from Stanford University, and a BS in Engineering and Operations Research from Princeton University. Bjorn Billhardt  Bjorn Billhardt is co-author of The 12-Week MBA and CEO of Abilitie which has trained 100,000 learners in 50 countries, including rising leaders at Fortune 500 companies like Coca-Cola and GE. He also co-founded Enspire Learning a custom e-learning development company and was a consultant and corporate trainer for McKinsey & Company. Bjorn holds a BA from the University of Texas and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has served on multiple boards, including The Magellan International School, Spa Partisan, the Advisory Board of the University of Texas at Austin School for Undergraduate Studies and the UT-HDO Program. He emphasizes the importance of starting small and continuously enhancing strategies through data-driven approaches. It also explores the differences in B2C and B2B pricing, the impact of AI on supporting salespeople, and the challenges of misaligned incentives in achieving business success.   Why you have to check out today's podcast: Understand the need for compensation structures and incentives to align with business objectives that support desired outcomes Discover how AI is impacting the way salespeople handle pricing and negotiation Learn how to leverage both science and machine learning to make more informed pricing decisions   "If you're new to the journey, start small. You don't have to go and build a transformer network on day one. Even a simple EDA, Exploratory Data Analysis, can give you a ton of insights than just a guesswork." - Vivek Anand   Topics Covered: 01:19 - What paved his way into pricing 03:26 - How credit risk and interest risk influence pricing derivatives 04:37 - Thoughts on quantifying risks 05:36 - Data science in relation to AI advancement 07:39 - AI capabilities in capturing contextual and temporal information and other pricing techniques using AI 11:30 - Talking about AI and extrapolation 12:47 - B2C pricing versus B2B pricing and the significant difference in data availability between the two 18:38 - How AI can be utilized in the B2B world to assist salespeople in pricing and negotiation 23:57 - Vivek's one best pricing advice   Key Takeaways: "B2C is mostly, pricing is a lever to generate demand. Whereas in B2B, it's more of a lever to gauge the willingness to pay from the customer's standpoint.” - Vivek Anand "I think data science is a big tent, and AI is a part of it." - Vivek Anand “The way I think about AI is like, instead of making it heuristics, it learns from the data or it just comes up with a mechanism that just translates input to the output, more systemic, faster learning and can be deployed at scale.” - Vivek Anand   Connect with Vivek Anand: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/va2260/   Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mark@impactpricing.com
