Adopting our youngest son through the foster care system ten years ago was truly one of life's greatest gifts. But one thing we didn't fully understand as we looked forward to a bright future with our beloved little boy was just how much trauma a child suffers when they're separated from their birth parents. Like many foster and adoptive parents, we are on a constant learning journey and are always looking for better ways to support our son through the unique struggles he experiences. That's why we're so grateful that Jenni Lord was able to join us for this candid conversation.Jenni founded Chosen—an organization committed to empowering parents and fostering children's trauma recovery. “Who is with them long term?”This is the question that Jenni Lord started asking after her organization helped fund hundreds of adoptions. What she realized is that the breakdown of these adoptive families often stemmed from the parents not being equipped to handle the behaviors and challenges that came along with trauma.Today, Jenni Lord is a resolute advocate for fostering family healing through the power of genuine connection. Her journey blends personal experiences with a visionary commitment to transforming the child welfare landscape. In 2008, she established Chosen, a trailblazing nonprofit dedicated to nurturing children's recovery from trauma by empowering their families. In this episode, Jenni shares her firsthand experience with trauma through her adoptive brother, why many parents and caregivers are ill-equipped to handle trauma behaviors on their own, new initiatives to meet practical needs in the system, and more!Find the show notes and links to anything we discussed here: https://riversideproject.org/jenni-lord-18Connect with us!Website: https://riversideproject.orgInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/the.riverside.projectFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/riversideproject.htx
Welcome to the SYNC Your Life podcast episode #87! On this podcast, we will be diving into all things women's hormones to help you learn how to live in alignment with your female physiology. Too many women are living with their check engine lights flashing. You know you feel "off" but no matter what you do, you can't seem to have the energy, or lose the weight, or feel your best. This podcast exists to shed light on the important topic of healthy hormones and cycle syncing, to help you gain maximum energy in your life. In today's episode, I'm interviewing Jenni Lord, founder and CEO of Chosen. Jenni first encountered the child welfare system in 1995 when her foster brother entered their family as a toddler. His story and five-year adoptive journey had a profound impact, and she has had a desire for systemic transformation since. After several years in the business sector, the road for professional advocacy opened up in 2008 when she had an idea of how to help children who needed loving and safe families. Subsequently, she founded Chosen. Jenni has a background in Communications, Psychology, and Counseling. She has extended her professional training with a Nonprofit Management Certification, along with certifications in Leadership and Fundraising. Part of her role is advocating for systemic policy reform, and she is active in both federal and state affairs. Chosen‘s mission has evolved with her at the helm to fulfill a unique need in the childcare welfare continuum. Jenni recognized that there is a real deficiency in long-term support of families impacted by the grief and loss associated with foster care and adoption. She is extremely passionate about children healing from the trauma of abuse, neglect, and abandonment, which is the agency's primary focus today. Equally, she is dedicated to strengthening families as agents of healing for their children. In 2017, Jenni led the organization through self-implementation of the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) from Traction to break through to a next level for Chosen. She is intentional about leading a culture of empowerment and accountability to most effectively serve the vulnerable. She has regularly been summoned to teach others about EOS's impact on growth and organizational change. Jenni has served in multiple board and leadership roles locally and nationally, including most recently as Texas Chair of the national Family Focused Treatment Association (FFTA). She is a founding member of the Family Coalition's church movement for More than Enough in New Braunfels, TX, and is intimately involved in Unicity's Decade of Family in San Antonio. Jenni Lord, the CEO & Founder of Chosen, first encountered the child welfare system in 1995 when her foster brother entered their family. Her brother’s story had a profound impact on her life, and she has had a desire for systemic transformation since. In this week’s episode, we learn more about Chosen’s transformative work, take a deep dive into how trauma care can transform foster care and adoption, and we discover ways for our listeners to get engaged.
Jenni Lord is a friend that I met through the organization CHOSEN CARES that she founded. We became fast friends while we were in the process of adopting Zoe. She and her family have loved on us in every stage and we are so thankful for them! I love Jenni’s heart for the vulnerable but also her heart for families and the desire to make sure families are whole, healthy and intact. She started this non-profit CHOSEN over 10 years ago starting as a race (Marathon and Half Marathon) to provide aid to families adoption. I love how Chosen has evolved over the years and while their main focused used to be helping others in the process of adoption now they walk alongside families that are both in process of fostering, adopting and once your family is home doing the hard work of connecting, bonding and becoming a family. You can still run the race for a family but it has become so much more than that! I also just LOVE that Jenni is from the REAL LIFE Friday Night Lights high school and I cannot believe she never mentioned that to me! I love friends like Jenni that have so much heart and are giving it all for the Lord! She models this clearly in her work but she is also shining a BEAUTIFUL example of this to her girls and sweet son! Jenni Lord fell in love with running when she had her first “runner’s high” in her late teens. When she was at the start line of her first half marathon, she realized that she needed to run for something more than herself. This was the genesis of Chosen, which is an organization that provides adoptive families financial, educational, and mentoring services. Additionally, they are involved in orphan and foster care around the world. We talk with Jenni about her running past, what motivated her to start Chosen, and also talk about some amazing stories that have resulted from their efforts. Jenni describes that the connection between adoption and running is quite natural, as they both take a lot of time, training, sacrifice, perseverance, and endurance. One way Chosen advocates for vulnerable children in need for homes is by organizing what has been called the “Prettiest Race in Texas”, which in it’s 7th year will be a 5K and half marathon. This year’s race is on November 19, 2016 in New Braunfels, TX. Use the discount code AB16MS for $5 off. Episode sponsored by goodr, use code “runified2016” for a special Runified discount!
