The Holiday Season is upon us! In Episode 222, we continue our annual tradition of sharing bookish holiday gift ideas. We've given these items to loved ones or treated ourselves to them (or received them as gifts!). We hope you find our ideas helpful. Since our last episode, we've had some fun biblio adventures. Two highlights: Chris took a leisurely drive through the back roads of Connecticut to Hickory Stick Bookshop in Washington Depot (the town that inspired the Gilmore Girls), and Emily participated in the Cherry Bombe member book club discussion of Ina Garten's memoir Be Ready When the Luck Happens, featuring Ina's co-writer Deborah Davis. In our “Just Read” segment, we discuss a gardening book, a YA novel, two picture books, and two novels, one a suspense thriller, the other literary fiction: Complete Starter Guide to Bonsai: Growing from Seed or Seedling--Wiring, Pruning, Care, and Display by David Squirer When We Flew Away: A Novel of Anne Frank Before the Diary by Alice Hoffman Fight of the Century: Alice Paul Battles Woodrow Wilson for the Vote by Barb Rosenstock, illustrated by Sarah Green I Am Book by Joren Cull Trouble Island by Sharon Short The Weekend by Charlotte Wood Emily also discusses two short stories she's read, “Johnny Christmas” by Ivy Pochoda from Eight Very Bad Nights: A Collection of Hanukkah Noir edited by Tod Goldberg and “Cat Brushing” from the collection Cat Brushing by Jane Campbell. Chris hasn't read Gregory Magquire's novel Wicked, but she's curious about it after seeing the new Wicked movie. Have you read it? Thanks as always for listening!

Amy has a lot of energy this week. Also, she spent all day yesterday at the emergency vet with her cat, Johnny Christmas, who was feeling under the weather! The ladies discuss how vets always want your pet to have a last name. It's a cat - it doesn't have a birth certificate, last name, or a pension! Next, Amy and Maya's taste test from a new place called Bella's Coffee Shoppe ends in an unexpected twist. This week's Animal Report features various office dogs, leading Amy to contemplate adding a new dog to the fam. Maya is jazzed about the show Song Exploder featuring REM's Losing My Religion. Take a deep dive into what Licorice Pizza means. Finally, Progressive Insurance has blatantly stolen the patented SOSS Approved/Denied segment for their new ad campaign. Amy & Maya open the show with a slightly shady improvised campaign pitch for the Florida Tourism Board. Maya suggests a pet psychic for Amy's angsty cat, Johnny Christmas. The ladies revisit a TEEN Magazine from 1990, reviewing 30-year-old quiz answers, scrutinizing questionable advertising, and falling in love with a very rude stranger. Lastly, Approved/Denied shines the spotlight on a waterskiing baby, the Tesla Cyber Truck, and 50-foot Japanese robots. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-spirit-of-77/message
Hello people welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, happy new year to you all, I hope you’re all very well and have had a lovely start to 2020. This is episode 34 and features my conversation with Matt Appleton and Johnny Christmas who make two thirds of the brass section inzaza ska punk band, Reel Big Fish. I met Matt and Johnny at the o2 academy in Leeds on their tour which had previous guests Lightyear supporting. As with chatting to other guests who’s music I’ve listened to for nearly 2 decades, it’s great to find out how they got into music, both writing and performing and it’s brilliant when they show that they still have the passion for music - I know reel big fish have had multiple line up changes and these guys weren’t the founding members but they’ve done their time and covered the globe a few times over, which I’m sure is exhausting. We cover how the guys came to play their instruments and how they joined RBF and was great to get an insight into the workings of the band. They are a lot of fun to watch and for anyone who hasn’t seen them, they are coming back to not only the U.K. but Yorkshire as part of the punk in drublic stage at slam dunk festival 2020 which has a ridiculous line up already so make sure you get tickets for that it looks ace. As always, I have added a few of my personal favourite tracks to the wiypodcast playlist on Spotify so check that out if you’re looking for some fun time dancing music with slightly darker undertones than your standard ska punk band. https://www.facebook.com/ReelBigFish/
