Here's part two of my conversation with Stephanie Phillips and Will Dennis.
Even though there has been a bit of a gap between episodes, I've been hard at work getting interviews. In fact, I have a new three-part interview with Stephanie Phillips, with Will Dennis co-hosting. We spent our time talking about how to approach building and maintaining a writing career in comic books.
As Phoenix, Jean Grey has faced endless cosmic mysteries, but nothing like this. Her sister, Sara, murdered by the Phalanx years ago, has inexplicably returned. How? When? Why? Jean should be asking… but if she did, this would be a very different story. Stephanie Phillips brings back Sara Grey this June! Join us LIVE Wednesdays 7 PM EST, for our takes on the week's comic book news, rumors, & leaks. Check out our creator interviews & join the Discord!

Was it your own writers block? Can you describe the creative journey behind developing Seth Holms as a character struggling to write a happy ending? The comic is described as a "love letter to the Italian slasher genre"—how have films like those of Dario Argento influenced your storytelling and visuals?13How do you balance the elements of horror, gore, and B-horror camp with a critique of our cultural obsession with true crime?I really liked how, in a scene set in the narrative, you call back to the fact we're in the story within the story via lettering, was that in the script or Hassan's idea? With He Came in with a Smile as a backdrop, how does Seth's past impact the unfolding narrative in this new miniseries? What are some of the challenges you faced while infusing both literary and cinematic influences into a cohesive comic book experience? In what ways do you hope readers engage with the commentary on true crime fandom as they dive into this dark, twisted world? If you discovered that your own stories were coming to life, which character from 'You'll Do Bad Things' would you least want to encounter in a dark alley, and how would you try to escape their clutches?
Published by Boom Studios, Grim is a original series created by writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Flaviano with colorist Rico Renzi, imagining the world of the afterlife run by various "Grim Reapers" of all backgrounds featuring the main character Jessica Harrow. She is a young Grim Reaper who is edgy yet caring character that is here to escort the dead to the afterlife. That is until her scythe gets stolen and the people living can see her. However, as we learn quickly this is just the tip of the iceberg. The mystery of Jessica Harrow's origins, how did she die, and how does her lineage end up putting the fate of the world in her hands, is what drives book forward. The pacing on this book is phenomenal, character development of Jessica is earned, the various Grim Reapers in their society are all unique, well developed story and the cliff hangers at the end of each issue made the series amazing. We recommend anyone who likes supernatural, action, drama with themes of horror vibes check out Grim. We read the first Deluxe Edition collecting the first 15 issues of the series, but the book is still ongoing with issues 16- 20 in volume 4 just released.

Can you talk about what went into making such a bold decision?Exploring Diana's LossThe solicit for issue #4 mentions that Diana pays a price she can't bear. Without giving away spoilers, how does this loss shape her emotionally and strategically moving forward?Collaboration Between Writer and ArtistHow do you work together to bring Diana's sacrifices and triumphs to life, especially in such emotionally and visually impactful moments?Building Diana's AlliesAllies play a crucial role in Diana's journey in issue #4. Can you tease any new or returning characters and their importance to the story?Balancing Epic and Intimate StakesAbsolute Wonder Woman balances large-scale conflict with deeply personal stakes. How do you ensure both aspects feel equally significant? You've said that Historia is sort of part of the DNA of the book even if it's not cannon. Could you mention anything specfic you drew from that and where may have diverged?Recently there's been a growing amount of WW/Cheetah shippers, does that influence your use of Barbara Minerva at all?A question from Ryan Perry, you've effectively used hyperviolence so that it's something the reader can't look away from, yet it doesn't feel provocative. Is there a science to balancing a compassionate message with that same hyper-violence?

Stephanie Phillips leads the City of San Antonio's Deconstruction & Circular Economy Program. Housed in the Office of Historic Preservation, the program prioritizes building material reuse as a tool for affordable housing repair, traditional trades revival, economic innovation, equitable access to high-quality resources, and cultural and community resilience. Her work contributes to nonprofits and coalitions that focus on embodied carbon and circular economy policy and advocacy, including the Climate Heritage Network and Build Reuse. She is the co-founder of Circular San Antonio and is a 2023 J.M. Kaplan Fund Innovation Prize awardee. Her work aims to foster collaborative partnerships that get us closer to creating a regenerative built environment. Part of Stephanie's story is about how she came to think that “design is everything” and how she has translated that to a career that sees repair, reuse, and stewardship as key elements of community benefit. “What we are doing can happen anywhere,” Stephanie says. “It requires a silo-busting, transdisciplinary mindset. Bringing everyone to the table is how you effect change.”

To start, Napalm Lullaby…what a killer title. How did you come up with it?This series plays around with theocracy and societal decay, what made these themes important for this series? You and Bengal have worked together before, what made them right for this project? While this is a sci-fi story with some incredible world building going on, it also opens with a flashback that features an origin that has a familiar ring to a certain superhero. Is this where the bud of the story germinated for you? There's some high-tech sci-fi stuff going on in Napalm Lullaby, do you ever craft future tech with the thought this could be our future, or is it about achieving something in the story more than anything? There are some sexual scenes in the first issue, which reminded me of the UCLA report saying Gen Z wants less sex in TV and movies, and comics tend to lack them, where do you stand when it comes to sexual themes in their comics?I understand you just signed a 3-year deal with Image and your company Giant Generator. Aside from say, number of titles released, is there a goal you're trying to reach by the end of the 3 years, or a credo you follow with each project?
