On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're joined by writer Rob Williams to talk all about Hidden Springs, his wild new series that blends retired Hollywood legends, a baby kaiju, and a desperate race against the military. It's a fun, heartfelt conversation about building flawed characters, mixing comedy with tragedy, and why stories about second chances hit harder when everything's on the line. Visit our Patreon page to see the various tiers you can sign up for today to get in on the ground floor of AIPT Patreon. We hope to see you chatting with us on our Discord soon! Dave: Absolute Batman #20 (Skottie Young) Chris: Bleeding Hearts #4 (Juni Ba Variant) Interview: Robbie Williams - Hidden Springs - Rend and Tear and Tooth and Claw - Feature film Game 1. Hidden Springs has such a wonderfully strange premise: retired Hollywood legends protecting a baby kaiju. Where did the initial spark for this story come from, and when did you realize this was the right mix of heart, comedy, and monster chaos? 2. The cast of characters is incredibly eclectic, from a rocker reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne to a classic Hollywood beauty, a trailblazing female director, a stand-up comedian, and a career TV star. How did you approach building such different personalities and making them feel like a believable found family? 3. Nil Vendrell Pallach is handling the art. What did Nil bring to the project visually that made them the perfect collaborator for a story that moves between comedy, nostalgia, and kaiju action? 4. There's something inherently funny about ageing celebrities being the only ones capable of protecting a world-ending monster. What interested you about pairing the idea of aging, fading fame, and second chances with something as huge and destructive as a kaiju? 5. With all these Hollywood types, I was reminded of Caccoon, about a group of old folks who encounter an alien eggs that give them youth, with your new series on the way do you think this the old person encountering sci-fi elements is an underused corner of fiction? 6. What made dark horse the right publisher for this? 7. You've written everything from Judge Dredd to Petrol Head. Where does Hidden Springs sit for you creatively? Does it tap into a different storytelling muscle compared to your other work? 8. (Fun question) Your heroes include a rocker, a comedian, a movie star, and a legendary beauty escorting a baby kaiju across the countryside. If you had to add one more retired celebrity archetype to the team, who would it be and what ridiculous skill would they bring to the kaiju babysitting mission?

This week's spotlight interview is with Timmy Heague, co-writer of Lost Fantasy #9, and is especially revealing, not just because of the wild hooks (Nazi dinosaurs, bazooka swords, monster hunting), but because of the unique vantage point he brings as both a writer and a longtime comic shop owner. That dual perspective shapes everything, from how he thinks about audience expectations to how stories are built to connect on the shelf. This interview goes far beyond Lost Fantasy #9. Timmy Heague digs into his unlikely path from comic shop owner to working writer, how collaborations with Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas actually function behind the scenes, and why being on the retail front lines gives him a sharper read on what fans want than most creators. You'll also hear about the realities of breaking in, the push and pull of co-writing, and the mentors who helped shape his voice. It's part origin story, part industry insight, and a candid look at how comics really come together. What interested you most about picking up his story at this breaking point? You're working with Eamon Winkle on the Bombshell story. What makes Bombshell a compelling lens into this world, and how does her story complement or contrast Henry's? You're co-writing this issue with Curt Pires and Franklin Jonas, while also contributing to a backup that ties into Fireborn. How did you all divide the storytelling responsibilities, and what did that collaboration look like on the page? You've recently come off co-writing Archie vs. Minor Threats with Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum, which thrives on tonal contrast. Did that experience influence how you approach tone here, especially with the mix of action, sci-fi, and character work? The solicit teases Henry being pulled into a new case while still recovering. How do you balance forward momentum with giving weight to his injuries and trauma? The issue introduces the “Cyber-Ronin,” which is an instantly striking concept. What was the creative spark behind that character, and how does he challenge the world of hunters in a new way? Lost Fantasy blends genres in a big way, from cyberpunk elements to mythic hunting lore. When you're writing in that kind of sandbox, how do you keep the story grounded and emotionally clear? Fun one: if you had to drop Bombshell into another comic universe for a one-shot, where would you send them and why?

Daredevil is getting a fresh start with a brand new #1 from Stephanie Phillips and Lee Garbett — but after the last run left a lot of fans frustrated, the real question is whether this reset actually fixes what wasn't working. In this review, Jace takes a look at Daredevil #1 and breaks down what works, what doesn't, and whether this new direction brings Matt Murdock back to the street-level hero fans have been missing. From stronger pacing and action to a compelling new villain in Omen, this issue feels like a true return to form — but is it enough to win fans back long-term? Let us know your thoughts in the comments — did you stick with the last run, or are you jumping back in with this new #1?

On this week's AIPT Comics Podcast, we're joined by Matthew Rosenberg to talk about one of the most ambitious creator-owned books on the horizon: If Destruction Be Our Lot. For a story about the end of humanity, this one is surprisingly full of life. We dig into how the series came together, from its strange and instantly compelling premise of a robotic Abraham Lincoln wandering a post-human world, to the deeper themes driving it. Rosenberg opens up about how the book grew out of his own creative evolution, how it responds to the current moment for artists, and why this isn't a bleak dystopia so much as a story about connection, purpose, and trying to find meaning when the system no longer makes sense. We also get into the craft behind it all, including the long development process, the collaboration with his brother Mark Elijah Rosenberg, and why artist Andy Macdonald might be doing some of the most exciting work in comics right now. Of course, we also talk Spawn and what it means to step into that world, but the heart of this conversation is If Destruction Be Our Lot and why it might be Rosenberg's most personal and layered work yet. What drew you to telling a story from that perspective rather than focusing on the fall itself? Can you talk a little about your collaboration with Mark Elijah Rosenberg? Andy Macdonald's art brings a lot of personality to these robots. How closely did you collaborate to shape the look and feel of this world? Abe, a robotic Abraham Lincoln, is such a strange and compelling lead. What made him the right lens for exploring meaning, purpose, and identity in this world? There's a strong theme of searching for connection, even in a world without humans. What does “friendship” look like in a story populated entirely by machines? You've tackled everything from crime to dark comedy. Where does this series sit creatively for you, and does it feel like a departure or a natural evolution? Why do you think themes of thankfulness and simplicity resonate so deeply with children — and adults?Crafting in RhymeThis story uses a joyful rhyming style. What draws you to rhyme as a storytelling device, and what challenges or delights come with writing in verse?Holiday SpiritYou've said you've always loved the holiday season. What specific memories or traditions helped shape the spirit of The Gift of Everything?Mooch & Earl's Timeless AppealMooch and Earl have been beloved characters in MUTTS for decades. What do you think it is about their personalities that allows them to connect so effortlessly with readers across generations? From Page to StageSeveral of your works, including The Gift of Nothing and Me…Jane, have been adapted as musicals at the Kennedy Center. How does it feel to see your stories reimagined in another medium?Visual StorytellingYour illustrations have a deceptively simple elegance. How do you balance keeping the art playful for children while also layering in emotion and meaning for older readers?Longevity and LegacyMUTTS has been running for 30 years and has inspired praise from legends like Charles Schulz and Jane Goodall. Looking back, how do you see your evolution as both a cartoonist and a children's book author?Fun/Silly Question: If Mooch and Earl were invited to a holiday gift exchange in real life, what do you think each of them would bring — and what would they secretly hope to get?

This week on bigcitysmalltown, we examine San Antonio's evolving approach to urban growth and resource management through the lens of the city's deconstruction and circular economy initiatives. San Antonio stands out as the largest city in North America to adopt a deconstruction ordinance, shifting how older buildings are taken down and how building materials are valued, reused, and kept within the community.Cory Ames sits down with Stephanie Phillips, Senior Deconstruction & Circular Economy Program Manager at the City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation, to discuss the origins and aims of this policy, the environmental and community impact of slowing demolition, and the pathways to a more circular local economy. Their conversation offers insight into how these programs seek not only to reduce landfill waste but also to preserve the city's heritage and build social cohesion. In this episode, they cover:• The history and impact of San Antonio's deconstruction ordinance• How embodied carbon and building material reuse are becoming central to city planning• Workforce development and the challenges of scaling deconstruction in a fast-growing city• The potential for both commercial and residential expansion of circularity efforts• How local organizations and residents can get involved in supporting reuse and sustainable building practices• What makes San Antonio uniquely positioned to lead on these issuesStephanie also shares observations on the city's “big city, small town” identity, the importance of community engagement in policy, and what a circular future may look like for San Antonio.RECOMMENDED NEXT LISTEN:▶️ #135. Planting Change in San Antonio through Community Gardens – How can green spaces transform a city's health, safety, and future? Host Cory Ames sits down with Gardopia Gardens founder Stephen Lucke to explore the role of urban agriculture in boosting wellbeing, fostering land justice, and inspiring new generations of community leaders in San Antonio.-- -- CONNECT

Sorry about the delay, but finally, here's the third part of my conversation with Stephanie Phillips. It's a fantastic wrap-up and contains plenty of new info on managing a writing career in comic books. One thing I took away from it was that you need to be prepared to do the work and don't fear that part either. Everyone who is succeeding as a writer finds a way to write their way across the finish line. Without that, you will not have a career. Remember, every completed piece of work starts a conversation that could open another door.

Was it your own writers block? Can you describe the creative journey behind developing Seth Holms as a character struggling to write a happy ending? The comic is described as a "love letter to the Italian slasher genre"—how have films like those of Dario Argento influenced your storytelling and visuals?13How do you balance the elements of horror, gore, and B-horror camp with a critique of our cultural obsession with true crime?I really liked how, in a scene set in the narrative, you call back to the fact we're in the story within the story via lettering, was that in the script or Hassan's idea? With He Came in with a Smile as a backdrop, how does Seth's past impact the unfolding narrative in this new miniseries? What are some of the challenges you faced while infusing both literary and cinematic influences into a cohesive comic book experience? In what ways do you hope readers engage with the commentary on true crime fandom as they dive into this dark, twisted world? If you discovered that your own stories were coming to life, which character from 'You'll Do Bad Things' would you least want to encounter in a dark alley, and how would you try to escape their clutches?

BAM POW Comic Hour

Published by Boom Studios, Grim is a original series created by writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Flaviano with colorist Rico Renzi, imagining the world of the afterlife run by various "Grim Reapers" of all backgrounds featuring the main character Jessica Harrow. She is a young Grim Reaper who is edgy yet caring character that is here to escort the dead to the afterlife. That is until her scythe gets stolen and the people living can see her. However, as we learn quickly this is just the tip of the iceberg. The mystery of Jessica Harrow's origins, how did she die, and how does her lineage end up putting the fate of the world in her hands, is what drives book forward. The pacing on this book is phenomenal, character development of Jessica is earned, the various Grim Reapers in their society are all unique, well developed story and the cliff hangers at the end of each issue made the series amazing. We recommend anyone who likes supernatural, action, drama with themes of horror vibes check out Grim. We read the first Deluxe Edition collecting the first 15 issues of the series, but the book is still ongoing with issues 16- 20 in volume 4 just released.

Could you mention anything specfic you drew from that and where may have diverged?Recently there's been a growing amount of WW/Cheetah shippers, does that influence your use of Barbara Minerva at all?A question from Ryan Perry, you've effectively used hyperviolence so that it's something the reader can't look away from, yet it doesn't feel provocative. Is there a science to balancing a compassionate message with that same hyper-violence?
