This case is personal. It happened just months before I began my career with the Atlanta Police Department, and it shaped the way I understood the job, the institution, and the stakes of unchecked power. On November 21, 2006, three Atlanta Police Department narcotics officers executed a no-knock warrant at 933 Neal Street in northwest Atlanta—the home of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston. The warrant was built entirely on fabrication. Officers Jason Smith, Gregg Junnier, and Arthur Tesler claimed a confidential informant had bought crack cocaine from the residence earlier that day. No buy occurred. There was no dealer, no “Sam,” no surveillance. There was only an elderly woman living alone in a high-crime area, protected by burglar bars and an old revolver she kept for self-defense.Around 7:00 p.m., officers cut through the security bars and forced entry. Johnston believed she was being robbed. In the dark, unable to see who was coming through her door, she fired one shot over the intruders' heads. Officers responded with 39 rounds, striking her five or six times. As she lay dying on her living room floor, Smith handcuffed her and then planted three bags of marijuana in her basement to manufacture justification for the raid. The officers also pressured their informant, Alex White, to lie and say he had purchased drugs at the home.White refused to participate in the cover-up and went public six days later. His decision triggered an FBI investigation that uncovered systemic corruption inside the APD narcotics unit: falsified warrant applications, planted evidence, coerced informant statements, and a quota culture demanding nine arrests and two search warrants per officer each month.Officers who failed to hit numbers faced transfers and punishment; those who exceeded them received rewards and incentives. Investigators determined the same marijuana planted in Johnston's home had been used earlier that day to frame another man, Fabian Sheets. Sheets was then coerced into providing the false tip that sent officers to Johnston's address. Every step leading to her death was driven by lies, pressure, and a performance system that valued arrests over truth.The legal fallout was swift but damning. In April 2007, Smith and Junnier pleaded guilty to manslaughter and federal civil rights violations, with Smith admitting to planting drugs and lying on the warrant. In October 2008, Tesler pleaded guilty to federal civil rights charges. Sentences followed: Smith received ten years in federal prison, Junnier six, and Tesler five.The scandal dismantled the narcotics unit, forced policy changes requiring multiple controlled buys before warrants, sharply restricted no-knock entries, and accelerated the creation of Atlanta's Civilian Review Board. The city settled with Johnston's family for $4.9 million in 2010. Her house was later demolished, and in 2019 the Kathryn Johnston Memorial Park opened near the site. Her death became a lasting symbol of the dangers of quota-driven drug enforcement and the human cost of militarized policing—foreshadowing later no-knock tragedies like Breonna Taylor's killing in 2020.This episode examines the full chain of corruption that led to Kathryn Johnston's death, the cover-up that followed, and the institutional pressures that made it possible. Norm Wielsch was a law enforcement officer for over 25 years — 16 of those as an undercover narcotic agent. In 1998, he was diagnosed with an incurable neuro-muscular disease, and after more than 30 surgeries, he became addicted to opioids. Wielsch was diagnosed with PTSD, and then his daughter was diagnosed with a serious illness and given a poor prognosis. In a downward spiral, Wielsch made a series of bad decisions that landed him in federal prison. While incarcerated, he obtained a master's degree in Theology and Counseling, a Doctorate in Christian Counseling, and a Drug and Alcohol Counseling Degree. He currently works at a men's residential treatment facility as a registered alcohol and drug counselor and pastoral care provider. He is a working credentialed chaplain who hopes to one day launch a first responder ministry. H. Lee Barnes, author of ten books, including four novels and four short story collections. His newest, EMERALD CITY BLUES (University of Nevada Press; October 14, 2025), is a searing historical novel set in San Pedro, California during World War II that paints a vivid and memorable picture of forbidden romance, war-time culture, and the human fabric of our shared identities in times that seek to divide us, illustrating the many surprising similarities between then and now. Lee Barnes has lots to talk about. His life before he became a writer was thrilling and fascinating and led to him becoming a writer and professor. He was a Green Beret in the Vietnam War and was honored by the Vietnam Veterans of America with an Excellence in the Arts Award for his Vietnam War books. He was employed as a detective, and then as a sergeant. He worked for Griffin's Detective Agency as a Private Investigator and for the Nevada Division of Investigation and Narcotics. He's even gone undercover. In 2009, he was inducted into the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame. He earned his MFA in creative writing from Arizona State University and taught English and creative writing at the College of Southern Nevada, retiring emeritus in 2017. His short fiction has received the Willamette Fiction Award and the Arizona Author's Association Fiction Award. His last collection, Life Is a Country Western Song, garnered the 2019 New Mexico/Arizona Book Award for Fiction Other. Barnes lives in the Hualapai Valley in northern Arizona.H. The problem was driven by perverse federal, state, and local financial incentives that pushed cops to take shortcuts in procuring warrants for drug raids in order to boost their arrest and seizure statistics. Bill served with the Montclair Police Department for 8 years. In 1990 Bill was hired by the Essex Fells Police Department and attended the Morris County Police Academy where he graduated from the 40th Basic Police Officers Class. Bill served 15 years with Essex Fells rising to the rank of Detective. Bill was assigned as a task force officer with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Fugitive Task Force out of Newark NJ while serving with Essex Fells. Bill later transferred to the West Caldwell Police Department where he finished his career in 2015. While with West Caldwell Police, Bill was assigned to the Essex County Bureau of Narcotics in Newark NJ. Throughout Bill's career of over forty-three years, his work productivity has earned him numerous acknowledgments on his performance including awards and commendations.  He served on the West Essex Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 81 executive board for 12 years. Bill served and chaired on many committees including the scholarship committee and the golf committee. He served two terms as Recording Secretary, one term as Vice President and one term as President. He received the States highest recognition for his service, awarding him the Gold Life Membership award in 2001.After Bill retired in 2015, he took on a new career with the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken as a campus police officer. He rose to the ranks of Detective, Sergeant and Detective Sergeant. Bill has always had the passion for helping others but more so his fellow officers. He got involved in officer resiliency and serves not only the officers of Hudson County but the State of New Jersey.  Bill understands the importance of the role of a Resiliency Officer within law enforcement. In today's profession, officers are not only tasked with upholding the law and protecting communities, but they are also facing increasingly complex challenges, both externally and internally. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Sudanese police interrupt funeral service to arrest 5 Christians Police in Sudan disrupted a funeral prayer meeting last month to arrest five Christians. The Christians are South Sudanese. Police have been targeting Ethiopian and South Sudanese nationals for deportation as civil war rages in Sudan. Muslim extremists in the country are also calling for officials to arrest South Sudanese Christians in particular.  A local church leader told Morning Star News, “There is a growing fear among the South Sudanese Christians. So, they remain indoors in order to avoid being arrested.” Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Sudan. The Northeast African nation is ranked fifth on the Open Doors World Watch List of the most difficult countries to be a Christian.  Sudanese landslide killed 1,000 people Speaking of Sudan, the country suffered one of its worst natural disasters in recent history.  On Sunday, a landslide wiped out the village of Tarasin in the western region of Darfur. Only one person survived, leaving an estimated 1,000 people dead. The landslide came after weeks of heavy rainfall in the mountainous region. Getting aid to the area is already difficult due to the ongoing civil war. In recent years, Sudan's conflict has generated what is considered the world's largest humanitarian crisis.  25.9 million digital Bible downloads in 2024 The United Bible Societies Fellowship reached 240 countries and territories with millions of copies of the Bible last year. The Fellowship of Bible Societies facilitated 25.9 million digital Bible downloads in 2024. This outpaced full Bible printings for the first time. The fellowship distributed 22.5 million printed Bibles last year. It also distributed 8.6 million printed New Testaments and over 118 million printed portions of Scripture.  Brazil led the way in printed and digital distribution, followed by India, China, Nigeria, and the Philippines.  Brazilian homeschool mom lost her case in court Earlier this week, a Brazilian court heard a case of a mom prosecuted for homeschooling her son.   Regiane Cichelero was facing fines of $20,000 and threats of losing custody of her child, for daring to choose home education on religious grounds.   Alliance Defending Freedom International has taken up the case. Her legal counsel, Julio Pohl, points out that “No parent should fear state punishment for choosing to homeschool their child. Regiane made a lawful and conscientious decision to teach her son at home. We are hopeful that the court will affirm her rights and take an important step toward protecting parental rights in Brazil.”   Sadly, Cichelero lost the case.  She was ordered to re-enroll her child in Brazilian public school and ordered to pay the equivalent of $20,000 for not complying. She said, “We will take the case to the Supreme Federal Court and from there, if we continue to receive a ‘no,' we will take it to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.” She had a special message for the Christian homeschoolers who have been praying for her. Cichelero said, “To you who prayed, my sincere thanks. Remember, prayers never return empty. The Lord is sovereign over all things. The Lord has called us for this time, for this cause, for this moment. We are writing history. … He is still the God who controls everything. He has not abandoned us!” US military strike kills 11 Venezuelan terrorists in boat with narcotics The United States conducted a military strike on Tuesday on a drug boat from Venezuela. On Truth Social, President Trump wrote, “The strike occurred while the terrorists were at sea in International waters transporting illegal narcotics, heading to the United States. The strike resulted in 11 terrorists killed in action.” Listen to comments from President Trump. TRUMP: “On the boat, you had massive amounts of drugs. We have tapes of them speaking. It was massive amounts of drugs coming into our country to kill a lot of people. Everybody fully understands that. In fact, you see it, you see the bags of drugs all over the boat. And they were hit obviously. They won't be doing it again. And I think a lot of other people won't be doing it again when they watch that tape. We have to protect our country, and we're going to.” President Trump said the terrorists belonged to Tren de Aragua. The Venezuelan gang is responsible for mass murder, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, and acts of violence.  Trump supports Christian pregnancy centers The Trump administration is supporting Christian pregnancy centers in New Jersey in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. First Choice Women's Resource Centers is challenging New Jersey's unconstitutional investigation into its operations. Erin Hawley, Senior Counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom, said, “New Jersey's attorney general is targeting First Choice—a ministry that provides parenting classes, free ultrasounds, baby clothes, and more to its community—simply because of its pro-life views. The Constitution protects First Choice and its donors from demands by a hostile state official to disclose their identities.” 50% of Congress are people of Biblical principle The Christian Employers Alliance released their new report card on U.S. Congressional leaders. The index scores lawmakers on a 0-to-100 scale based on their alignment with Biblical principles. Republicans tended to score better than Democrats. Of the 535 members of Congress, half scored 50% or better. Margaret Luculano is the president of the Christian Employers Alliance. She told the Washington Examiner, “Our faith is the foundation of how we live and lead, and lawmakers need that same compass as they face complex policies. That's why we launched the Biblical Business Index — a first-of-its-kind tool bringing together theologians and policy experts to connect Scripture with today's legislation.” Wisdom says in Proverbs 8:15, “By me kings reign, and rulers decree justice.” Gen Z & Millennials attend church more often than older Americans And finally, the Barna Group released new research from its ongoing State of the Church initiative. The report found Christians from younger generations are attending church more frequently than before. They also attend more often than Christians from older generations.  Churchgoers from Gen Z attend 1.9 times per month, while Millennials attend 1.8 times per month. The average for U.S. churched adults is 1.6 per month. Also, Gen Z and Millennial churchgoers attend nearly twice as much as they did in 2020. Ep. 76 Andre Lemay's law enforcement career spans 33 years starting in 1991 with the Pittsburg Police Department in the Bay Area of CA and later as special agent for the California Department of Justice, a role he had for 26.5 years.We dive into his early critical incidents on patrol including his first life-or-death fight with a suspect who was not trying to get away, but who intended to do serious harm. Andre also talks about the harrowing experience of coming to the aid of fellow officers engaged in a shooting that nearly took their lives. He discusses achieving his dream assignment in Narcotics and the unique challenges of doing undercover work in the city in which he grew up.In 1997, Andre joined a DOJ Task Force in CA while with Pittsburg PD and then in 1998, lateraled to the California DOJ as a special agent where he continued working in Narcotics. He later moved into the agency's Bureau of Firearms where he investigated firearms crimes at the local, state, and federal levels. In 2011 he created a K9 firearms detection task force that sparked his passion for working with detection dogs. JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Two people were arrested after around 100 pounds of methamphetamine was recovered during a drug bust in Jackson. According to DPS Spokeswoman Bailey Martin, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, with assistance from Capitol Police, made the arrests in early August. During the execution of a search warrant on August 7, authorities arrested Racquel Taylor for aggravated trafficking after finding her in possession of 100 pounds of meth at a home on South Crownpointe Drive in Jackson. On August 12, officials also arrested Tyrone Samuel on charges of aggravated trafficking and conspiracy. Samuel is currently out on bond from Madison County. Authorities recovered approximately 100 pounds of methamphetamine, two pounds of marijuana, 1,000 doses of M30 counterfeit Oxycodone containing fentanyl, a Draco 7.62 rifle, a stolen Ford Bronco out of Kentucky, and a GMC Yukon. More arrests are anticipated.

So anyhow. Well, anyhow, that's a, that was a little aside folks. Uh, we're gonna talk about the Narcotic Syndicate in Kansas City as an example. We got you up to, you know, creating this, uh, uh. Organization to, to fight these narcotics organizations. And, and they were developed with international connections and, and trade routes from Turkey to Sicily to maybe France, uh, um, Canada to the United States. I believe that's the way the French connection kinda was, uh, part of their operation was through Canada, but part of it was directly from Marsai into, uh. To, uh, the port in New York City. And so, but Kansas City had a big piece of that. So, bill, let's talk a little bit about, you know, Harry Anslinger and the Yeah. Early narcotics, uh, uh, bureau and, and fighting, you know, these specific mafia gangs here in Kansas City. Bill: Anslinger is director of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics is going after. The, uh, trade routes. Of course, [00:01:00] they got narcotics agents in the various cities. They're establishing what's going on abroad. And at the same time, the uh, Italian Sicilian group, which is organized into what we call Cora, they're dipping their fingers into the drugs and making it a major operation. Anslinger, uh, his organization is truly the only one, I mean. Some local police departments, uh, uh, were involved certainly, but uh, on a federal basis they were the main stay. So, uh, while, while he's in working, the mob is working, you know, and Anslinger job is getting harder as they get better. What happened in Kansas City is our organization that consolidated during prohibition, seeing the end of prohibition, uh, the powers to be, uh, decide that losing [00:02:00] alcohol. They would replace it by going big time into a drug operation, and it was called the Kansas City Narcotics Syndicate. Our narcotics agent here, who was instrumental in, uh, breaking it up. Uh, he had another name for it, I forget right now, but it was like a, uh, subsidiary of the mob, which is what it was. They appointed one of the original founders of the organization, a guy named Joe DeLuca, and he was given the, uh, job. Of putting this together, he and his brother Frank, they put it together on a ba a criminal, I mean, on a business basis. Uh,

Officials like Harry Anslinger, the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, pushed explicitly racist propaganda against cannabis users, helping transform what was once widely accepted medicine into a demonized drug.Cannabis prohibition was also driven by powerful business interests. Companies like DuPont (developing petroleum-based products like nylon and cellophane) saw hemp as a competitive threat, while William Randolph Hearst wanted to protect his paper mill investments. These business moguls leveraged political connections to criminalize cannabis despite scientific evidence of its relative safety.The Nixon administration weaponized cannabis laws against political opponents. Nixon's domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman later admitted: "We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin ... we could disrupt those communities. ... Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."Cannabis interacts with our bodies through the endocannabinoid system, a biological network that helps regulate mood, energy, balance, and appetite. Our bodies naturally produce cannabinoids, but plant-derived versions like THC are approximately a thousand times more powerful. Importantly, cannabis use during pregnancy or adolescence can be harmful to developing brains, with studies linking early use to depression, anxiety, and even psychosis.The good news? If you're over 25, moderate cannabis use appears relatively safe (unless you're predisposed to mental health issues).
