The Problem With Religion | Losing My Religion | Week 1 by Elevate Church

Leise, […]

America is a deeply spiritual nation. Over 70% of us say that we feel spiritual in some way. But – at the same time – we're getting less religious. So for people who are spiritual-but-not-religious – what's replacing organized religion? What do they believe – and where does that show up in their day-to-day lives? In Brittany's series called Losing My Religion, It's Been a Minute is going to find out. In her final episode of the series, Brittany is investigating so-called manifestation. It's this popular belied that if you want something badly enough, it'll come to you. You might know this idea by other names, like The Law of Attraction, or The Secret. Manifestation spiked in 2020, according to Google Trends, and it's still riding that wave online. Brittany calls on with Tara Isabella Burton, an author and journalist, and New York Magazine's Rebecca Jennings to get to the bottom of this trend: the appeal of manifestation, its symbiotic relationship with the internet, and why it might make us less aware of our humanity.Want to get to know Brittany? So for people who are spiritual-but-not-religious – what's replacing organized religion? What do they believe – and where does that show up in their day-to-day lives? In our new series called Losing My Religion, It's Been a Minute is going to find out. This week, we're getting into psychedelics. That's an umbrella that includes the drugs LSD, magic mushrooms, peyote, and often ketamine and MDMA too, among others. And some of these drugs have a history of spiritual practice spanning millennia. But there's a new group that's really taking on the psychedelic mantle: tech bros and CEOS. Brittany is joined by Maxim Tvorun-Dunn, PhD candidate at the University of Tokyo, and Emma Goldberg, business reporter at the New York Times, to discuss what it means that these drugs are getting championed – and sometimes financially backed – by the tech elite, and how might that affect our culture's relationship to psychedelics as spiritual tools.Support public media and receive ad-free listening & bonus content. Church was never meant to be something you simply attend...it was always intended to be a family where you belong. In Part 4 of Losing My Religion, we're diving into what makes church more than just a religious obligation. It's about community, connection, and discovering your place in something much bigger than yourself. Learn why church is less about attendance and more about actively participating in life-changing relationships in this week's message!

In our new series called Losing My Religion, It's Been a Minute is going to find out. This week, we're getting into wellness. It's a global industry worth 6 trillion dollars that's starting to encompass all kinds of things – including spirituality: from the spirituality of wellness practices like yoga and reiki, to treating wellness itself like a religion. Brittany is joined by Alyssa Bereznak, wellness editor for the LA Times, and Rina Raphael, author of the book The Gospel of Wellness: Gyms, Gurus, Goop, and the False Promise of Self-Care, to get into what people get out of a wellness-based spiritualism.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

(Galatians 1:6-10) Paul contrasts our need for the approval of others with the favor that we already have from Jesus.

(Galatians 5:7) What does it mean to run the race of our life, in such a way that we win.

This weekend, Dan Hamrick, our Director of Family Ministry, shared a powerful message for the final week of our "Losing My Religion" series. He unpacked the deep forgiveness and grace at the heart of our faith—how, because we're forgiven, we can extend that same grace to others, even in tough situations. This kind of forgiveness keeps us rooted in a genuine relationship with Jesus instead of just going through religious motions. Catch the message to see how this shift changes everything!

In this one-off drop, Candice offers a summary of recent content, sharing why she's taking sides in the upcoming U.S. general election and offering perspective re: the cognitive dissonance that reluctant-yet-resigned MAGA voters are likely experiencing in the final weeks leading up to Nov 5th.And then, politics aside, you'll hear last week's unscripted drop from over on Patreon, where she shares more personally about:New age apostasy - the liberating (and terrifying) feeling of life without dogma; and why 'healing' from moral injuries is never really done.Spiritual high-talk - it's moving into the mainstream & despite the sugar-coated lip service, is it demonstration of true unity? Not so much. The power-player problem - it won't be remedied with whack-a-mole focus on leadership alone; we've got to re-invent the systems that breed them.Is Social Media radicalizing us? - Candice shares how she's been losing agency to the high-demand influence of her smartphone & what she plans to do about it.Patrons of The Deeper Pulse have unlimited access to over 70 hours of bonus content in exchange for their support of the podcast. The Apostle Paul's powerful letter to the churches of Galatia
(Galatians 5:1-14) Religion is an endless list of things that we must add, achieve, improve upon and acquire.
When proposing an episode for this week's show, the goal was to put focus on a tour that we haven't discussed a whole lot on this podcast - the 2011 Canadian tour. The question here was which show would be the one to cover. So we crowd sourced it and got some great answers, but the best answer was a suggestion to do the episode in tribute of former Calgary Flames star, Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who were tragically killed recently. This made the Calgary 2011 show a no brainer to talk about. There is a big storyline that looms over this show. This happened to be the same day that R.E.M. called it a career. Hearing the band react to the news and play a very impassioned touching tribute to them with the song It Happened Today has been the consensus call back moment from this show. Pearl Jam could have made a decision to play one of their more well known radio singles like Losing My Religion, Everybody Hurts or Man On The Moon, but we'll talk about how they selected the right song for the right moment. There are also songs in this setlist that connect to something that the band has done recently such as Brain Of J, Rats, Crazy Mary and even something relevant in concerns to Johnny Guitar!
