It's a special Throwback Thursday edition of Chris DeMakes A Podcast, and while the show usually digs deep into the archives, this week's rewind only takes us back a few months to a standout February episode featuring Tahlena Chikami of Bite Me Bambi. With her band hitting the road on Less Than Jake's Summer Circus tour, it's the perfect time to revisit her breakdown of the ska-pop gem “Bad Boyfriend.” Tahlena dives into the real-life inspiration behind the lyrics, working with producer Cameron Webb, and the balance between nostalgia and freshness in modern ska. From gang vocals to tour tales to the making of their album Eat This, this episode is full of energy, insight, and a whole lot of heart. This week's Throwback Thursday takes us back to Episode 245 of Chris DeMakes A Podcast, originally released on February 17th, 2025, with none other than Angelo Moore of Fishbone. In this lively and eye-opening chat, Angelo breaks down the making of their explosive 1985 single “Party At Ground Zero”—a wild mix of ska, punk, funk, and soul with an end-of-the-world twist. He shares stories about the musical and cultural forces that inspired the song, and gives a glimpse into the creative energy that fueled Fishbone's early days. And if you want to experience that energy in person, don't miss Fishbone on the road this summer as part of Less Than Jake's 2025 Summer Circus tour. This week, Chris is joined by his Less Than Jake bandmate JR Wasilewski to break down the writing and recording of "Walking Pipebomb" from the band's Uncharted EP. JR shares how a Dance Hall Crashers song sparked the initial idea, how his signature guitar style shaped the sound, and why the demo remained nearly identical to the final version. The conversation explores the band's collaborative songwriting process, the balance of musical tension and release, and how impactful lyrics can elevate a song's meaning. With Less Than Jake's 2025 Summer Circus tour on the horizon, this episode offers a deep dive into the creative forces driving the band's latest music. What is Post-Third Wave you ask? Why it's a subgenre coined by Checkered Rob of course! It's a regional Ska-Punk boom that existed between 1999 and 2005 after the death of mainstream Ska and before the advent of the true Dark Ages. It consisted of bands that were in high school or college, made rough studio recordings and were highly influenced by the Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake and the Bosstones. This primer is for those that remember the days of Winamp, Limewire, Myspace, Soulseek, Turn Up the Ska Radio and the mammoth Still Standing Compilation.Hosts: Celine, Rob and JoeyEngineer: JoeyEditor: JoeySkassociate Producer: Chris Reeves of Ska Punk InternationalMerch: www.checkeredpast.ca/merchPatreon: www.patreon.com/checkeredpast

Ah, the 80s—a time when every celebrity had a secret (or not-so-secret) desire to dominate the music charts. But no actor-turned-singer had a more meteoric rise—and equally swift backlash—than Eddie Murphy. His Rick James-penned chorus for "Party All the Time" might be an earworm you can't escape, but let's be real: the rest of the song is as forgettable as a VHS tape in a Netflix era. This week, we've got a special guest who knows a thing or two about catchy tunes: podcaster and Less Than Jake frontman Chris DeMakes joins us to dive into Eddie Murphy's lone radio hit. In the interview, we talked about balancing family life with music, as well as recording, promoting music, and being on a label. Neil Kevin Hennessy (born December 12, 1978) is a punk rock musician, music producer and engineer from Chicago, Illinois. Hennessy currently plays in The Lawrence Arms, Colossal, The Falcon, The Smoking Popes, Sparta and is currently filling in on bass for Rise Against on their Blink 182 tour down in Australia because Joe the bassist had to fly home for personal stuff. He has also been a member of Noise By Numbers, Baxter, The Killing Tree, Quattro and played multiple shows with Teenage Bottlerocket. Fun fact, he co-wrote the Rise Against song "Swing Life Away" with McIlrath, and also played percussion on the Less Than Jake album, GNV FLA. I got him on the Skype and this is what we chat about: All the projects he's working on Joining Baxter The Chicago scene Killing Tree The Whipple House the Lawrence Arms starting Matt Allison Oh Calcutta The Falcon How the Lawrence Arms practices for shows now a days The War On Christmas Writing a new album The infamous Hennessy Painting And a ton more Be on the lookout for the Lawrence Arms new album sometime in the next year or so based on what he told me.
