Career / Process You broke in around 2006, and you're now pushing close to two decades in comics. How has your approach to storytelling changed from those early years to now? You've been at this for nearly 20 years at this point. What's something you understand about comics today that you wish you knew when you started? You're writing across multiple major franchises right now. How do you shift your voice between something like Superman, Iron Man, and G.I. Joe? On top of all this, you wrote a story in Creepshow Vol. 4 #5 titled Artificial Ignorance. Was that a story you had in a drawer, or…how did that come to be? Superman / Superboy-Prime Superboy-Prime has always been a volatile character, but here he feels almost desperate to prove himself. How do you balance his edge with making him someone readers want to follow? With Manchester Black entering the picture, what excites you about putting those two characters in conflict specifically? Any Superman elements/tropes you want to touch? Iron Man You've said Tony Stark is one of your favorite characters. What's something about Tony that you feel hasn't been explored enough in past runs? Madame Masque and A.I.M. feel like they're operating at a higher level here. What makes them the right villains for this phase of the story? Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man Do you have a favorite Universal Monsters adaptation? Do you have any favorite werewolf stories? This feels like a very grounded, almost psychological take on the Wolf Man. What drew you to that angle? Is the when of this story important to the overall experience? What makes the Wolf Man a character worth revisiting right now? Rapid Fire Question Round (Stolen from Stephen Colbert so that a guest is “known”): Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out? Apples or oranges? What is the scariest animal? Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? What do you think happens when we die? Favorite action movie? Favorite smell? Least favorite smell? Flat or sparkling? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you've written before, who would they be and why? You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it? Depeche Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?

First things first, have you got your copy of Absolute Green Arrow #1? Have you read it? Okay, good. You may proceed. This week, we're going full spoilers with writer Pornsak Pichetshote and artist Rafael Albuquerque, discussing the person behind the Longbow Killer's mask. We pitch our theories. Pornsak and Rafael hear them. We read their microexpressions for clues. Absolute Green Arrow #1 hit comic shops today (Wednesday, May 20th). It's bound to stir some serious conversation. Some folks will react with discomfort, and that discomfort is an invitation for consideration and conversation, a mode DC's Absolute Universe excels in. As Pornsak Pichetshote says during our chat, Absolute Green Arrow is an angry book. It's a reflection of the world outside our window today, and it should get you thinking about life beyond the pages you're holding. The extremity pursued in this book, and other Absolute titles, is about more than looking badass. It's a way to capture an emotional truth we're all experiencing in 2026. This week, we talk Longbow Killer suspects. We discuss the Italian horror slashers that inspired their green hooded killer, how unhinged wealth dehumanizes everyone, and why serialization is superior to binge entertainment. Absolute Green Arrow #1 is a single issue that excels as a single issue. The first chapter is out now. It's written by Pornsak Pichetshote, illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque, colored by Marcelo Maiolo, and lettered by Jeff Powell. Make sure you follow Pornsak Pichetshote on Bluesky and Instagram and Rafael Albuquerque on Bluesky and Instagram. What drew you to reimagining Green Arrow through that lens rather than a more traditional superhero approach? For Rafael Albuquerque: The visuals carry a lot of mood and unease. How did you approach designing a version of this world that feels grounded but still heightened enough for horror? Trick arrows, yes or no? For Pornsak: Dinah Lance is effectively our entry point into this mystery. What made her the right character to lead the story instead of Oliver himself? For Rafael: This series deals with violence in a more unsettling, investigative way. How do you balance making those moments impactful without overwhelming the reader? For Pornsak: The suspect list of archers is a clever way to tap into DC history. How did you decide which characters to include, and how do you make each feel distinct within the mystery? For both: This series is arriving after several Absolute titles have already established the tone and expectations of the line. How did you think about fitting into that larger world while still carving out your own identity? For Pornsak: There's a question at the heart of issue #2 about whether the killer is something to stop or understand. How important is moral ambiguity to this version of Green Arrow? For Rafael: Oliver Queen's presence looms large even in death. How did you approach visual storytelling around a character who is central but not always physically there? Fun question for both: If you had to survive in this world and pick one DC archer to have your back, who are you choosing… and who are you absolutely avoiding?

The Yeti is back! Finally after an extended absence for a lupus flare I'm back and what an episode to return with because I've got returning guest comics writer Pornsak Pichetshote and first timer legendary comics artist Rafael Albuquerque on with me to discuss their new DC Comics project Absolute Green Arrow. Highlights from the episode include a deep dive into how the creative team is reimagining Oliver Queen not just as an archer but as a mysterious figure in a Giallo inspired murder mystery where corrupt billionaires are the targets, how Scott Snyder and DC editorial granted total creative freedom to reinvent the Green Arrow mythology from scratch, the visual look of the book influenced by 70s thriller textures and a vintage comics like Daredevil providing the feel Rafael and colorist Marcelo Maiolo are bringing to the page, the mystery of Absolute Black Canary or Dinah Lance and why she is the real heart of the story, and the impact of masters of horror comics like Junji Ito and Bernie Wrightson on the series. Follow Pornsak on Instagram Rafael's website Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story Season 2 Absolute Green Arrow from the publisher WITHOUT THE TRICK ARROWS... WITHOUT THE MONEY... WITHOUT MERCY... WHAT'S LEFT IS THE ABSOLUTE HUNTER! A serial killer is slaughtering corrupt billionaires. The only clue to their identity is the mysterious green arrows sticking out of his victims' corpses. Executive protection specialist Dinah Lance, a.k.a. Absolute Black Canary, is one of the people tasked to uncover this murderer's identity as she investigates her suspects... all familiar DC archers uniquely linked to a recently murdered Oliver Queen. I Know What You Did Last Summer for billionaires, Absolute Green Arrow reimagines the Emerald Archer's mythos into a dangerous, urban horror murder-mystery by Eisner winners Pornsak Pichetshote (Dead Boy Detectives, Infidel) and Rafael Albuquerque (Detective Comics, American Vampire). Jace is joined by writer Pornsak Pichetshote to discuss his upcoming Absolute Green Arrow series, including the tone, themes and approach to the character within the Absolute Universe. The conversation dives into the heart, humor, and hope of BOOM! From there, Jace and Pornsak talk about the wild, collaborative energy behind Tiny Onion's Exquisite Corpses, the bigger-picture challenges of getting indie comics noticed, and the potential future of The Horizon Experiment in collected form—before shifting into an exciting tease of what's ahead with Absolute Green Arrow (with art by Rafael Albuquerque) and wrapping things up with some warm holiday tradition talk and a few gift-worthy reading recommendations.

I don't fanboy often, but I'm making an exception for today's guest. When Jesse Lonergan was last on the show, he was talking about Man's Best with co-creator Pornsak Pichetshote. Back then, I had no idea who he was. That changed instantly. Jesse is back to talk about Drome, his new graphic novel and one of my favorite books of 2025. I can already guarantee it'll land on my year-end awards list, I'm just not sure which category yet. Drome is a singular reading experience, packed with some of the most innovative and intricate panel layouts I've ever seen. It even hijacked my dreams the night I read it. THE HORIZON EXPERIMENT collects five one-shots by some of the most celebrated names in comics, literature, TV, and film, providing “pilots” for new series, including a Chinese James Bond and an Evil Dead for black nerds. This episode is a real treat because I get to talk about one of my favorite ongoing series at a time where the ongoing series is becoming increasingly rare. I had legendary comic book artist Terry Dodson on awhile back with Pornsak Pichetshote talking about their Horizon Experiment project The Manchurian and Terry mentioned there was a new Adventureman arc coming out in early 2025. I jumped at the chance to lock him in again for a chat, and he's brought along long time co-creator and comics writer Matt Fraction to the party and what a party it is. Rarely do I get to talk about the intersection of comics and architecture but Adventureman's pages are coated with art deco rich adornment. We get into why New York is such a special setting for the book, some of their inspirations behind the project initially, and how the landscape of art deco manifests in different places as this volume, Family Tree, takes us out of the Big Apple and around the globe with three unique stand alone stories. What do luchadores and French sailors have in common? You'll have to see what's in store as the stylish epic pulp adventure series hits comic book shop shelves. Adventureman Family Tree will be released on March 19th. From the publisher As the Connell family reels from the shattering events of ADVENTUREMAN: GHOST LIGHTS, they'll need to tap into the roots of the Adventureman family tree of heroes to make the world right again, starting with a luchador dynasty, savage savate kick-fighting, and the star-crossed teenage romance that brought Adventureman and Mme. Chagall the Superscientist together! PATREON We have a new Patreon, CryptidCreatorCornerpod. If you like what we do, please consider supporting us. We got two simple tiers, $1 and $3. I'll be uploading a story every Sunday about some of the crazy things I've gotten into over the years. The first one dropped last week about me relocating a drug lord's sharks. "less about, China versus America..what he really believes is the power of community". Award winning co-creator of The Good Asian, sak Pichetshote returns to talk about his visonary new project for Image Comics: a series of five one-shot comic books titled The Horizon Experiment. Each has a unique creative team inventing an original protagonist from a marginalized background set in genres such as horror or espionage, or inspired by icons like Indiana Jones or John Constantine. Pichetshote's entry in the series, The Manchurian, is more than a James Bond who "just so happens to be Chinese"- he is a spy whose identity is core to the narrative. There's also Finders/Keepers from Vita Ayala and Skyler Partridge in which a Boricua archaeologist returns an artifact from a museum to the people from whom it was stolen. The Manchurian, with artists Terry and Rachel Dodson is out now as is The Sacred Damned and more on the way from creative teams that bridge comics, literature, film and television. Here's my 2021 convo about The Good Asian with sak Pichetshote and Alexandre Tefenkgihttps://graphicpolicy.com/2021/05/18/the-good-asian-comic-with-creators-sak-pichetshote-and-alexandre-tefenkgi/

You're very busy at the moment, with Nullhunter, Sacred Damned, and Frankenstein all coming out at the same time, how do you find the time?Nullhunter is a bit different with you teaming up with Gustaffo Vargas, what's the elevator pitch for this one? There are some incredible visuals in Nullhunter, from large-scale action to future tech. As an artist, how detailed are your scripts when you're drawing the book vs working with a collaborator like Gustaffo? We know Nullhunter is inspired by the Labors of Hercules, but beyond Greek myth as a guide, do you have a world bible for this version of the future? In some ways Nullhunter reminds me of Dune with a big sweeping government in space, what were some of its inspirations? In Nullhunter, you have a way of stripping exposition to its bare essentials. What's that process like? The Silver Coin and The Sacred Damned have some gnarly monsters in them. Do you ever find yourself pulling out an old sketchbook and dusting off a design when the right script comes along? We had Pornsak Pichetshote on the show a little while back to tell us about the Horizon Experiment, and we love the concept. How'd you come aboard?Switching gears to Frankenstein: What is it about Universal's Frankenstein that has made this particular incarnation so enduring? With Frankenstein, you take a unique approach from a child's perspective, was this always in your pitch, or did it come up organically? Fanboy question incoming: Can we expect more Silver Coin in our future?Rapid Fire Question Round:Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out?Apples or oranges? What was your first comic?Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? When do you think your art style came into its own? What do you think happens when we die?Favorite action movie?Favorite smell?Least favorite smell?Favorite superhero? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you've created before, who would they be and why?You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?A genre you want to make more comics in?Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?
Jace welcomes writer Pornsak Pichetshote back to the show and artist Terry Dodson is joining us for the first time. The guys are here to chat about The Manchurian, the first of the Horizon Experiment books. The imprint is the brainchild of Pornsak wherein he has recruited writers to take some classic tropes in comics in storytelling and reimagine them with different main characters from diverse backgrounds. Specifically for The Manchurian this means taking the classic idea of James Bond and flipping it around to feature a Chinese spy and showcase the difference between western and eastern spycraft. We get to hear about the impetus of the project and how Terry came on board plus what he enjoys most about drawing something so grounded in the real world. Pornsak also lets us know about the other upcoming Horizon Experiment stories and creative teams.
Pornsak Pichetshote and Terry Dodson join the show to talk about The Manchurian, the first comic in Pichetshote's Horizon Experiment at Image.
I'm always excited about getting to talk to comics creators about their projects but today I'm ecstatic. Not only do I get returning guest Pornsak Pichetshote back on the show, who is one of the nicest people in the medium, but it's a double treat to get to introduce artist Terry Dodson on as well. They have an amazing project dropping soon called the Horizon Experiment: The Manchurian with Image Comics. This will be the opening salvo of a series of five one shot projects, designed as something akin to a tv pilot, each featuring original protagonists from marginalized backgrounds set in a popular genre and inspired by pop culture icons. Pornsak is co-editing the series with industry veteran Will Dennis (check out my interview with Will here) and the plan is to host all of them on the show if calendars and lives cooperate over the next five months before their release to give you a rounded flavor profile of all the cool eccentricity the Horizon Experiment has to offer. This book is fantastic. I love a big swing and often lament creators not having the opportunity to take them. Pornsak has not only crafted a great story here, but he's also providing the platform for other creators to take their own swings as well with the other Horizon Experiment books dropping soon. Make sure to get your orders in because this book will catch you off guard with the clever way these two have bent the genre and it plays so well off of the current paranoia of anything other in America. We did it. We've completed our San Diego Comic-Con coverage. Twelve podcasts in August. Too much? Maybe, but no regrets, and there is no better way to wrap up our Comic-Con celebrations than with Star Trek group editor Heather Antos and superstar writer Ryan North discussing Star Trek: Lower Decks and its new mission at IDW Publishing. Since its streaming premiere, we've championed Star Trek: Lower Decks as the most human Trek. While it's wickedly funny, frequently teasing the ultra seriousness in which we hold the franchise, Lower Decks laughs with the characters and concepts, never at them. The show and its showrunner, Mike McMahan, have tremendous reverence for the Star Trekthat's come before, and his love for it shines through every frame. The upcoming fifth and final season, which begins on October 24th, has us feeling a little weepy. However, there's no reason to fret. IDW is relaunching the Star Trek: Lower Decks comic book series with a new number one on November 13th, and on October 22nd, there will also be a brand new graphic novel called Warp Your Own Way. Both are written by Ryan North (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Fantastic Four), and IDW Star Trek group editor Heather Antos oversees it all. At San Diego Comic-Con, we sat down with North and Antos to discuss our mutual admiration for Star Trek: Lower Decks. We talk about its placement within the franchise, what they can do in the comics that McMahan and company cannot accomplish on television, and where this series may take the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos. Also, how does contributing to Star Trek affect their perspective as creators and, well, just as humans? Pornsak Pichetshote is one of the most creative powerhouses in comics who's work never misses. That may be a bold statement to make but Pornsak has backed it with citations galore. From his Eisner and Harvey Award-winning The Good Asian to his prolific horror debut as a writer, Pornsak's work has taken a 360 approach to the perspective on the themes his work explores. Now, along with an absolute cornucopia of talented creators, he is helping bring The Horizon Experiment to shelves. I personally am asking you to support this line of 5 one shots because each is a unique genre story from perspectives we don't see in comics. The Horizon Experiment is just that, an experiment. 5 creative teams are putting out 5 one-shots that can continue into a series if there is demand. The challenge for each team was to create a protagonist from a marginalized background set in a popular genre where if the background of your character was changed so would the story. I have had the please of reading Pornsak and the Dodsons' The Manchurian (sexy bombastic Chinese James Bond super spy) and The Sacred Damned (a Muslim John Constantine that flips the script on what you typically see with demonology) from Sabir Pirzada and Micheal Walsh. Both stories blew me away to the point that I have already read both multiple times. Pornsak Pichetshote goes through the creative teams to explain why each was built for each book to bring authenticity unlike anything I have seen before. Typically for interviews and podcasts, writing this portion is always the hardest part because it's hard to summarize a conversation to demonstrate how much goes on. But this one came easy because nothing excites me like going against the grain to create something unique. Pornsak Pichetshote and his whole crew are bringing five one shots that you need to pre-order so we can get more of them. These are the comics we need to see more of in the industry. They don't read like they were built to become IP, they read like they are artistic teams that want to show that there is so much more outside your own experiences in only a way comics can do it. Pre-order these books. All of them.
Hey, don't tell us. We'll tell you. The suits who bankroll the industry think they know what we want to read. They have no idea. Marginalizing voices is an active pursuit where financial concerns are frequently used as an excuse. The Horizon Experiment has faith in us, placing its future in our wallets, betting we'll support originality in genres gatekept by the fearful. Their first one-shot, The Manchurian, carries an irresistible premise steered expertly by Pornsak Pichetshoteand Terry Dodson. Published by Image Comics, The Manchurian lands in comic book stores on September 25th (its FOC is September 2nd). The elevator pitch champions a Chinese James Bond. Look at the header image above. Terry and Rachel Dodson are going full-Daniel Craig in Casino Royale or Ursula Andress in Dr. No. We've read the first issue and can confirm fashion, sex, violence, and unconquerable charisma. However, beyond the Bond basics, The Manchurian follows a perspective never explored by 007: corporate espionage as handled by Chinese Communist agents. Just as all of us were recovering from San Diego Comic-Con, we spoke with Pornsak Pichetshote and Terry Dodson about The Horizon Experiment, their twist on the spy sub-genre, and the four other radical one-shots riding on their heels. We discuss the pilot program The Horizon Experiment employs and how it's not really different from how comics always operate. We chat about capturing the Bond vibe without being chained to it and how competition amongst peers is as much a trap as anything else. Make sure you continue this conversation by following Pornsak Pichetshote on Twitter and Instagram. Also, follow Terry Dodson on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. I had a great conversation with Will Dennis and Pornsak Pichetshote about their new publishing venture -- THE HORIZON EXPERIMENT from Image Comics. We discussed how they work together as editors and the punk attitude they brought to the project. FYI- The FOC for THE MANCHURIAN is September 2.

How many words belong on a page? How many panels? In this week's podcast, we uncover the answers by chatting with Pornsak Pichetshote and Jesse Lonergan about their new Boom Studios series, Man's Best. It's a radically personal work about three emotional support animals lost in space, and it forced its creators to rethink their collaborative impulses to achieve the best comic possible. And we're excited to report they pulled it off. Man's Best is, without doubt, one of the year's best comics. In our conversation, before we dig into the craft and math behind the comic, we challenge the themes Pichetshote and Lonergan are exploring with Man's Best. It's a saga born out of crisis, and it required the artists to adopt one of the most tried-and-true fictional devices: anthropomorphization. We consider the intrinsic value of placing animals in harm's way and how it immediately - and perilously - heightens an audience's emotions. One dog dies, and we're happy to watch John Wick eradicate a hundred goons. It's not a vice-versa situation. The first issue of Man's Best is out now, and the second issue will arrive in comic shops on April 24th. You can continue this conversation online by following Pornsak Pichetshote on Twitter and Instagram, as well as Jesse Lonergan on Twitter and Instagram. As always, Omnibus, the Digital Comic Store and Reader, sponsors our Referrals segment. This week, we selected two comic book titles on the site that satisfy this episode's themes.
