Insomniac Games' co-founder Ted Price is retiring from the company after a storied 30 year career, but it's what he's leaving behind in his stead that's truly curious: A three-person CEO grouping, virtually unheard of in the corporate world, that hopes to leverage the unique skills of each person. When taken into account with PlayStation's new co-CEO structure, it makes us wonder if Sony seeks to spread the field instead of focus decision-making and responsibility on a single person. Is that such a good idea? We discuss. Meanwhile, Xbox had an exceptional press conference, and as Xbox games are now PlayStation games, we have a few titles of import to go over, including the reveal of the Microsoft-published Ninja Gaiden 4 and release dates for both Doom: The Dark Ages and third party RPG Clair Obscur. Other news this week includes chatter of a $100 pricetag for Grand Theft Auto VI, impressive new gameplay footage for Phantom Blade Zero, the commercial bombing of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and more. We then wrap up with six inquiries from the audience, as is our tradition. Could tariffs on Mexico drive physical game prices higher? Are there more game cancellations than ever, or simply more transparency in the process? Did Xbox miss an opportunity to strike at a vulnerable and underperforming PlayStation? Is Colin over-reliant on email, rendering him an exceptionally old man? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. Today, we're diving into the high-octane world of The Shadow Strays, a 2024 Indonesian action crime thriller that has taken the streaming giant Netflix by storm. Directed by the acclaimed Timo Tjahjanto, this film not only showcases exhilarating action sequences but also delves into deep emotional territories with its compelling characters and plot. The Shadow Strays introduces us to Codename 13, brilliantly portrayed by Aurora Ribero. She is a 17-year-old assassin, known as a Shadow, within an international organization. The film kicks off with a botched mission in Japan that leads to her suspension and forces her back to Jakarta for a psychological retraining. However, the narrative quickly unfolds into a complex web of crime, betrayal, and personal redemption as she meets a young boy, Monji, setting off a chain of events that pulls her back into the violent underbelly of Jakarta.Suspended and haunted by her past, 13 finds herself in Jakarta, next door to Monji and his mother, who are entangled with a human trafficker. After a series of violent incidents, Monji's mother dies, and Monji vows revenge, pulling 13 back into a life she tried to leave behind. As 13 navigates her way through a network of crime syndicates and corrupt officials, the plot twists through scenes of intense action and strategic warfare, leading to a climax that challenges her beliefs and forces her to confront her darkest fears. The Shadow Strays explores themes of identity and moral ambiguity. 13's journey is a tumultuous exploration of her past and a quest for redemption that questions the black-and-white morality often associated with her line of work. The film poses significant questions about family, loyalty, and the cost of freedom in a world riddled with corruption. For those who appreciate nuanced action films and are fans of international cinema, The Shadow Strays is a must-watch. It successfully combines action, emotional depth, and a rich narrative to create a film that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.So, tune in as we dissect The Shadow Strays, appreciating its craft and unraveling its complex layers. We got our WLED-friend PCBs today, and we only made one mistake: the wrong resistor on the 3.3V feedback line. Now that it's fixed, the board seems to work great with the latest version of WLED (https://kno.wled.ge/basics/tutorials/)! we are checking all 4 signal outputs with this handy 256-LED grid that sits on our desk. Next, we will test the onboard IR receiver, USB PD, I2S microphone, extra I/O pins, and I2C. We'll also do an Arduino IDE board definition in case folks want to use it as a generic ESP32-to-LED-driver board.
Photo by Gerald Hartl on Unsplash Published 18 November 2024 e490 with Michael & Michael — #AI, #AR, #VR, #RR (that's #RealReality) and a whole lot more! Michael and Michael start off the show with a discussion on how O2 is employing AI to waste phone scammers time. Check out the video in the show notes below for how dAIsy, the AI grandma works. After a quick discussion on Oasis, an AI generated game, the co-hosts then turn to an interview with professor Greg Benson on the future of coding now that natural language processing (NLP) and large language models can interpret user prompts and generate the code required to fulfill the stated need. Both Michael and Michael agree that there is high value in understanding the underpinnings of coding even where NLP can be a tremendous accelerator, much in the same way that writing algebraic proofs deepen the understanding of algorithms. Switching to mixed reality, Michael and Michael touch on the subject of watching movies and TV shows together, prompted by the YouTube feature on Quest. Michael R expands with another article about the Vision Pro music experience from The Weekend, and shares how intimate the experiences can be when the singer is performing directly for you, up close and personal. Next up, is a story about “Metaversities” in EU and UK schools that remind the cohosts of the Second Life experiences of a video screen in SL. This spurs Michael M to share what he learned at a recent UNCSA.edu School of Design and Production lunch. The ;TLDR is that Gen Z (among others) are craving authentic and real experiences not through a lens or a screen. Following the trend of *R, Michael calls this Real Reality, and in the context of the global entertainment market, this means live performances, such as the crane dance show in Sentosa, Singapore (see video below). This reminds Michael R of an interview he saw with Robert D Putnam, focused on the importance of building community and engagement as explained in his book Bowling Alone. The pair then turns to the Verge and Engadget stories discussing Amazon's codename “Amelia” plans to build upon the Echo Frames platform to create augmented reality experiences that can shave seconds off of Amazon delivery drivers' work. Wrapping up the episode, Michael R gives a quick overview of Tetris Forever and movie professor and adventurer Indiana Jones' latest gameplay. Would you want to ask dAIsy, the AI grandmother call your telemarketers? What Real Reality (RR) experiences are you craving? Have your bots

He was an expert in his field, but he also worked as an Intelligence Officer for the US military during World War II and the Cold War. And he wasn't a desk jockey, but an active spy. Despite a major physical disability, he parachuted into Europe during the height of World War II for espionage reasons. Oh, and he was a literature professor too, by the way. So, as a spy, recruiter, and cultural diplomat, he connected the academy, the State Department, and even the CIA, all at the same time! Episode 568.

Just two days before D-Day, Captain Gallery's US antisubmarine Task Group 22.3 managed to force the German U-boat U-505 to the surface. In a bold move, a boarding party secured the submarine before it could be scuttled, capturing an Enigma machine and the current Kriegsmarine code books. This remarkable operation earned Lieutenant Albert David the Medal of Honor for his leadership. However, it could have had catastrophic consequences. If the Germans had suspected that their cyphers were compromised, it might have jeopardised the Allied operation Ultra, which was already deciphering German signals. The Chief of US Naval Operations, Ernest King, was so incensed about the capture of U-505 that he threatened to fire Admiral Gallery. Joining me to discuss this operation is Charles Lachman, author of Codename Nemo: The Hunt for a Nazi U-Boat and the Elusive Enigma Machine.
