Welcome to an all-new bonus episode of Films for the Void! In this episode, Landon interviews Jonathan "Jono" Diener - a Flint-based musician, comic writer, marketing master, habitual tweeter, and certified cat and coffee enthusiast. You may know him as the drummer for former Fueled by Ramen punk band The Swellers, who spent the better part of a decade touring worldwide until calling it quits in 2015. Since then, however, he's kept incredibly busy as the Creative Director for Rootless Coffee in Flint, and as the drummer for the newly assembled band 84 Tigers, formed alongside Small Brown Bike members Mike and Ben Reed, as well as for  Worcester, Massachusetts punk band No Trigger. You can follow the work he's doing with Rootless over on Twitter @ rootlesscoffee, and if you live on the east coast, you can catch 84 Tigers in Brooklyn, Providence, and Boston this March.Landon chats with Jono about making the move from DIY touring to marketing, bestows advice for those working in freelance spaces, the work he's doing with Rootless Coffee, and, of course, movies - all on the latest episode of Films for the Void!TIME STAMPS00:00:00 Interview w/ Jonathan Diener00:33:22 Round Robin Discussion

With the  most pointless non-holiday firmly in our rear view mirror we can all continue on with a brand new episode of Edgeland. This week Bill starts a very massive and potentially polarizing undertaking. Over the next 3 weeks, all 25 Minor Threat songs (Out of Step is counted once) will be ranked from "Least Best" to "Best" and this week we hear songs 25-16. In the interview portion of the show Bill talks with Jonathan Diener of The Swellers and Braidedveins about not wanting to be defined by one thing, the horrors of caffeine, and being let down. In the non edge column Bill talks with DJ Steven Faith about growing up in DC, getting started as a DJ, and the spotting the charlatans. A very fun episode to get your weekend kicked off right.

As drummer and half of the songwriting team behind The Swellers, Jonathan Diener's punk proficiency has helped the Flint, Michigan quartet grow a cult following and tour with everyone from Paramore to Anti-Flag. Since 2002, the band has released four full-length albums and two EPs; their most recent release, 2013's The Light Under Closed Doors finds the band at a crossroads in life, imbuing the music with a sense of urgency and desperation that made it one of the year's best albums. I caught up with Jonathan to talk about writing songs with his brother, how a would-be side project inspired their new album and why it's best not to suppress your inspirations. Answer To Last Week's Trivia Question: Q: Who played the slide guitar on the classic Eric Clapton hit Layla? A: Duane Allman! Both Slau and Mark Rufino had some valuable follow up to this. They referred to a documentary on Tom Dowd called Tom Dowd: The Language Of Music. It's an absolutely fascinating glimpse into the life of a talented and influential engineer and producer. One of the interesting things in the movie is where he plays the original multitrack master from the Layla session and he solos Dunae’s slide and the piano. It’s so exciting to hear the raw material out of context. Slau and Mark both say. "If you haven't seen this, run (don't walk) to the store and pick up a copy." Better yet, just click here to get one online! This week's winner is Jeremy North.
