POPULARITY
If all you've heard from Nada Surf is their novelty hit "Popular" from '95, you'd be forgiven for not knowing they morphed into one of best bands in the world over the last 25 years. Starting with 2002's Let Go, the guys have released a constant stream of nearly perfect records and continue to mature in a beautiful way as evidenced by last year's Moon Mirror. This week front man Matthew Caws joins us to talk about their incredible transition, dealing with ADHD, balancing the band with his other projects, and why he always wears the same shirt. Nada Surf might be the best band of the 21st century. See for yourself! www.nadasurf.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

While we're on a brief hiatus from making all-new episodes, we thought it would be fun to compile all the moments where Paul asks his guests "What Was The First Record You Ever Bought?" and put them in a couple of "clip shows." Here's part one, featuring De La Soul, Dhani Harrison, Mac McCaughan & Laura Ballance (from Superchunk), Ringo Starr, Shelby Lynne, Redd Kross, NPR's Ann Powers, The Edge (from U2), Richard Thompson, and Matthew Caws (from Nada Surf). The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. We begin 2025 by going back 23 years to discuss our favourite songs of 2002, including emo classics, motivational hardcore, sparkly piano pop, terrifyingly positive psychedelic religious cults, and THE GREATEST GUITAR RIFF OF ALL TIME.We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Christina Aguilera ft Redman, Aqualung, Bright Eyes, Vanessa Carlton, Cousteau, The Delgados, The DIllinger Escape Plan Ft Mike Patton, Down, Frou Frou, Hatebreed, Idlewild, Isis, Jay-Z Ft Big Boi, Killer Mike, & Twista, July Skies, Ben Kweller, Avril Lavigne, Malcolm Middleton, Miss Black America, Nada Surf, Nine Inch Nails, Opeth, The Polyphonic Spree, Porcupine Tree, Sonic Youth, theSTART, Sigur Ros, Taking Back Sunday, Tech N9ne, Wilco, and James Yorkston & The AthletesFind all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/13AsY6By1DI8knbl7TpMFx?si=cd88b8d2738249feFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

On our latest episode, I interview Becca Neighbor: Astrologer and Singer-Songwriter about making sense of the Natal Chart (aka Birth Chart) in Astrology! Her intuitive method of reading the birth chart highlights key placements illustrating the blessings and challenges inherent in each chart, with the goal of enhancing self-awareness and self-compassion. We also discuss Becca's journey in navigating her neurodivergent brain, tarot and astrology as shadow work tools, and symbols of the divine feminine in dreams. Psyche Magic Website, Socials and more!More on Becca Neighbor: Twangy, laid-back melodies with a cosmic twist.Drawing from indie rock, folk, country, and pop influences, Neighbor's music is a glittery fusion inspired by the Wizard of Oz, her Taurus rising, Nada Surf's “Blonde on Blonde”, and Patsy Cline on vinyl.Neighbor's Nashville yellow brick road led her to tour managing outlaw country artist and “Highway Queen” Nikki Lane, who graciously gave her an acoustic set at the Stagecoach music festival in 2018. A few years later she managed Dualtone record label's artist curated vinyl subscription service Magnolia Record Club. When the tornado of 2020 kicked off her Saturn return she found herself back in Ohio for a few years to reconnect. In 2022 she made her eventual return to music city with a fresh perspective and a desire to create. Jono Diener was the drummer of Michigan-based punk rock band The Swellers from 2002-2015. Since the group's departure, Jono has found himself taking part in many different ventures. Being a hired gun for a few years for bands like The Early November and Versus the World, he eventually joined No Trigger and toured all over the world with them. He also took a break from being behind the kit to fronting the band Baggage with bass and vocal duties taking center stage. He co-founded Rootless Coffee in 2020 providing ethically sourced roasting with a variety of intricate flavors for customers to choose from. He's also an acclaimed comic book artist and an avid runner. His newest band, 84 Tigers recently opened for Nada Surf and released their debut full-length record, "Time in the Lighthouse" in 2022.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two of what I'm going to call alt-rock lifers, guys with vast catalogs and the stories to match, who've ridden the highs and lows over the years and continue to make fantastic music for dedicated fanbases: John Flansburgh and Matthew Caws. Flansburgh is half the core of They Might Be Giants, one of the two Johns—along with Linnell—who started making quirky pop records about 40 years ago. They've released nearly two dozen albums, wriggling their way into the mainstream on occasion, from “Birdhouse in Your Soul” to the Malcolm in the Middle theme to popular albums aimed at kids. It's been a remarkable ride that shows no signs of stopping; They MIght Be Giants is still on tour, still making new music, and still seeming to have as much fun as they ever did. Their latest record is called Book—it's available in many formats including, you guessed it, a giant book—and there are some sparklers on it, including one in particular that the guys talk about in today's episode. Check out “Brontosaurus.” The other half of today's conversation is Matthew Caws, singer and guitarist of the fellow New York band Nada Surf. Nada Surf had a really odd start to what's turned into a long and fruitful existence. Their first album featured the song “Popular,” which turned into something of a novelty hit / summer anthem back in 1996. It wasn't particularly representative of the band's smart, layered pop—which is no knock on “Popular” itself—which confused their record label, Elektra. But after a bit of a slow period, Nada Surf found their way into indie-rock hearts with 2002's Let Go, and they've earned a place in those hearts ever since. The tenth Nada Surf album came out earlier this year, and it's among their best. It also features a surprisingly high number of more uptempo songs, as Flansburgh mentions in this chat. Check out “Second Skin” from Nada Surf's newest album Moon Mirror. In this chat Flansburgh and Caws take a deep dive into the genesis of “Popular,” which Caws had no idea would be a hit but is happy to still play. They also chat about Flansburgh's love of the new Nada Surf record, both of their time on the same major label in the 1990s, and whether it's appropriate for a band to take a group bow at the end of a good show. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:42 – Start of the chat 2:58 – Welcome to Fresh Air 9:45 – The unusual origins of "Popular' 17:45 – Nada Surf's ignoble split with Elektra Records 22:40 – John's theory on Matthew's doubled vocals 32:21 – The ups and downs of sharing your political point of view as a musician Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to John Flansburgh and Matthew Caws for chatting. Not many bands get a second chance. But Brooklyn's Nada Surf are one of the lucky few. They hit it big with the mind 90s smash ‘Popular', but only a couple of years later found themselves dropped by their record label. They grabbed their second chance and evolved into one of the great indie-pop bands of the last 3 decades. Lead singer/songwriter Matthew Caws drops by the studio to chat about second chances and their 10th album ‘Moon Mirror.'

Nada Surf front person Matthew Caws chats with Paul about the themes and inspirations behind his band's shiny new album Moon Mirror (New West Records) and reflects on the band's three-decades making records, including tales of being mentored by the late great Ric Ocasek, having an early hit with "Popular," and working on the new one at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales. But as you'll hear, while it's fun to look back, today, Nada Surf do what's in front of them now. Nada Surf may have broken in the '90s with the sardonic mega-hit "Popular," but songwriter Matthew Caws isn't big on living in the past. On the band's new album, Moon Mirror, out September 13th from New West Records, he sets his sights on the present moment, focusing on the anxieties, hopes, and fears of our age while never losing sight of the hope and restless energy that has always fueled the band's music. Whether rocking out or settling into ballads, Nada Surf sounds focused and optimistic: "Don't be afraid, you won't be replaced," he sings, like a friend helping you get through a tough night of doubt. For this episode of Hotline, Matthew answers fan calls from the WASTOIDS answering machine, addressing his favorite Elliott Smith and Green Day songs, his tire changing prowess, mowing the lawn, drinking games, and more. We chat a lot on the episode about one of his first bands with his friend Frasier Sims, Children's Crusade. It's totally remixed, remastered and is a total gem that complements this episode really well. So if you like early proto-goth, punk, or post-punk then keep an eye out for that in the coming months. For the episode covering "Let Go" by Nada Surf on *DORKTREEPOD: The Road to When We Were Young*, here's a potential description: In this episode of DORKTREEPOD: The Road to When We Were Young, we dive into Nada Surf's 2002 indie-rock gem, Let Go. From reflective lyrics to laid-back guitar hooks, Let Go captured the melancholy and hope of the early 2000s. We explore the album's impact on the indie scene, its timeless themes of growing up and finding yourself, and why it's still a beloved record for fans today. Whether you're a longtime listener or discovering Let Go for the first time, join us as we revisit this cult classic."
Not everyone can say that both their first and last jobs were behind the counter of a record store. But that's how things ended up for Matthew Caws, before his beloved power-pop act Nada Surf became his main gig in the mid-2000's. Shifting time between New York City and Paris growing up, he points to an eclectic list of influences (classical, disco and late 70's NYC punk) that laid the groundwork for who he'd become as a musician and songwriter. Though their sneering, tongue-in-cheek alt-rock hit "Popular" became an MTV staple throughout 1996, the band has made a deeper impact as they've aged, through genuinely hopeful takes on the human condition like "Inside of Love" or "See These Bones." Today, Matthew talks about color coding his record collection, why double-tracking vocals feels like an act of fiction, the meticulous nature of Nada Surf's album covers, and connecting the dots between Bach and Blonde Redhead. Their new album Moon Mirror -- the group's first for Nashville label New West -- drops September 13th. More details are available at nadasurf.com.
Bands scoring a hit with a single that doesn't sound much like the rest of the album is not unusual. Blur, Sugar Ray, the Butthole Surfers, Nada Surf, and more had hits that might have confused buyers when the bought the respective albums, and the same goes for Faithless, and their 1998 album Sunday 8 PM. Thanks to the uptempo house hit "God Is A DJ," the band gained fans on both sides of the Atlantic. However, aside from one other track, the rest of the album runs at half that speed, mixing electronic downtempo and soul sampled trip-hop. It results in an uneven album that feels more like a collection of really good singles instead of a cohesive musical statement, but the highs, including a stirring vocal performance by Boy George, make the record one worth checking out.
