American television personality
Artist STRETCH Rumaner (Sculpture/Design/Food) is completely innovative and original, as his appearance on BBQ Pitmasters proved. A frequent guest of Guy Fieri, and not just on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, STRETCH is becoming a common fixture on Food Network shows. He is a wild man and is always a favorite of the show. He actually ziplined a whole hog into the American Royal for smoking. Dan and Dave will talk with him about creative BBQ and then the boys explore chicken.

Promo Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fw7m8RIesnc About Chef Garvin Restaurateur, Culinary and Hospitality Consulting Specialist, and Chief Culinary Advisor for SodexoMAGIC. Chef Garvin started his culinary career at the age of 13 in his hometown, Atlanta, Ga. Within 3 years, he was working at the Ritz Carlton-Downtown as the youngest line cook working with German Chef Vulker Shupp. He would later move to Palm Springs, California working under Chef Jean Pierre Dubray at the Ritz Carlton-Rancho Mirage. As his culinary career continued to show promise, Garvin relocated to Los Angeles, California, where his career evolved from Sous Chef to Executive Chef, to eventually opening his own catering & events company and signature restaurant. He continued to make a name for himself, and within a short span of time, make the leap to TV with his Turn Up the Heat with G. Garvin show. After 7 seasons, 3 books, and numerous accolades, his increasing popularity would lead to shows on the Cooking Channel, the Travel Channel, and his first James Beard Award nomination. Garvin can now be seen as a special guest on Good Morning America, or on Food Network alongside hosts such as Guy Fieri. He has also opened numerous restaurants in Atlanta through his “LowCountry Restaurants” brand and is actively working to educate and inspire the next generation of culinary professionals with his “G Garvin Culinary and Hospitality Foundation”. Through Garvin's efforts, he hopes to aid in breaking down the diversity barriers within not only the cooking industry but in society as a whole where chefs of color are often categorized more often by race than a profession. It has been a little while since we last had the opportunity to talk so I would like to start off by saying Thank you…. Thank you for continuing to support this show and tuning in today. For those of you joining us for the first time, go ahead and click subscribe or follow in your podcasting software so you don't miss a single episode of the Tech Chef. Today's theme is about “out with the old, in with the new.” Today's show will be a very abbreviated show and we won't have a guest on like we normally do. The show is all about what I have been up to and what is coming up! First and foremost, I am announcing here, for the first time, that I have spent my last days at 4R Restaurant Group and have moved on to a new company. I will always cherish my time at 4Rivers and all of the amazing team members that I had the opportunity to work with and the accomplishments we have fulfilled. I would also like to thank John Rivers for his leadership during the time I was working at his company. He is truly a lighthouse in our community. In regards to where I have landed, well, that is the big news I promised you today. I am officially announcing that I have joined Virtual Dining Concepts as the SVP of Technology. This is great step for me in my career as I help build, what I believe, is one of the most cutting edge concepts currently in the restaurant market space. So what is VDC and what are they all about, you ask? VDC offers restaurant owners an easy solution to generate more revenue out of your existing kitchens with minimal impact to current operations. Attract new customers with delivery-only menus using food delivery services. The magic of Robert Earl, who also owns Earl Enterprises, is that he has joined up with well-known celebrities and brands that will bring instant virtual kitchen success to your business. Brands such as NASCAR, Mr. Beast Burger, Bar Stool Bites, Guy Fieri's Flavortown are just a small portion of the brands that are offered and there are so many more in the pipeline. If you are interested and would like more information on becoming a partner, please visit https://www.virtualdiningconcepts.com/ (https://www.virtualdiningconcepts.com). So on the heals of that news, hopefully you are all getting ready for the MURTEC Executive Summit which will be from Wednesday through Friday, October 13-15th. Once again, out with the old, in with the new…… FINALLY we are meeting in person after…..how long? I will be speaking on Friday in a session called: Research Super Session Panel: HT's 2021 Customer Engagement Technology Study featuring: – Daniel Connolly, Professor, Drake University – Marybeth Pearce, Executive Director, Comcast Business – Mike Maxwell, Chief Technology Officer, Hathway – Your's truly Hotel & restaurant guests have ranked the tech-driven experiences that influence their willingness to spend — including mobility, off-prem solutions, and preferences around ordering and payments. Todd is the moderator of “Meet the Press,” host of “Meet the Press Daily” on MSNBC and the political director for NBC News. Then, we talk with listeners about their thoughts on the early stages of the 2022 Massachusetts Governor race, including Donald Trump's endorsement of former state Rep. Geoff Diehl. Andrea Cabral talks about the terrible conditions at Rikers Island, and how the Justice Department could be doing more work for police reform. Cabral is the former Suffolk County sheriff and the former Massachusetts secretary of public safety. She is currently the CEO of the cannabis company Ascend. Paul Reville discusses school board fights over mask mandates, and protests against legacy admissions in some of the country's most elite universities. His latest book, co-authored with Lynne Sacks, is “Collaborative Action for Equity and Opportunity: A Practical Guide for School and Community Leaders.” Dan Carpenter weighs in on why it is taking so long to approve the COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5-11, as Pfizer officially asks the Food and Drug Administration to issue Emergency Use Authorization. His most recent book is “Democracy by Petition: Popular Politics in Transformation, 1790-1870.” Corby Kummer talks about the impact of the pandemic on the restaurant industry, Guy Fieri's latest ventures and changing animal welfare laws that could raise egg prices in Massachusetts. Kummer is the executive director of the Food and Society policy program at the Aspen Institute, a senior editor at The Atlantic and a senior lecturer at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. We end the show by asking listeners their thoughts on the potential for higher egg prices, as laws increasing pen space for hens are set to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2022.

In the last 15 years, Nashville hot chicken has become a hot trend. But for decades before that, hot chicken was well known among Nashville's black community. For generations, you could only get it at the place where it was invented: Prince's Hot Chicken. Now with attention from the likes of Beyoncé and Guy Fieri, Prince's has gone from being a neighborhood institution to a Nashville landmark — and many imitators have come along. Dan travels to Nashville and speaks with André Prince Jeffries, who's been running Prince's for nearly 40 years. She talks about Nashville's history of segregation, serving members of the KKK, and the complicated racial dynamics behind this food trend. When white chefs and restaurateurs cash in on a dish created by Black people, who benefits? // Get 500+ more great Sporkful episodes from our catalog and lots of other Stitcher goodness when you sign up for Stitcher Premium: www.StitcherPremium.com/Sporkful (promo code: SPORKFUL). Ole Hickory Pits is a legendary worldwide brand built by a legend in the industry. David B. Knight is our guest on this episode of the Digital Hospitality podcast where he tells his story of founding Ole Hickory Pits and helping it grow into a massive worldwide company that continually innovates to this day. https://youtu.be/AFN3LZchbxE ➤ MORE PODCAST EPISODES: https://calibbq.media/podcast-episodes ➤ OLE HICKORY PITS ONLINE: https://www.olehickorypits.com/ David Knight and Ole Hickory Pits — When it comes to BBQ, few souls know the people or the business quite like David B. Knight. With almost a half century in the industry, David is the founder of Ole Hickory Pits and an elected member of the Barbecue Hall of Fame. Ole Hickory Pits manufactures and markets modern commercial, competition, and backyard BBQ smoker ovens, as well as barbecue tools, sauce and seasonings, and outdoor lifestyle products. Learn more about the history of Ole Hickory Pits at https://www.olehickorypits.com/about-us/ After opening up his own barbecue restaurant nearly 50 years ago to eventually pivot to manufacturing and selling his own pits, David Knight has put plenty of souls who live for the smoke in business. Our San Diego area restaurant Cali BBQ is built off Ole Hickory Pits. While the Spring Valley location has long fed families from the pits made and manufactured by David and his homegrown business, the new master smokehouse which is currently under construction will provide food, employment and education through the same pits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSwLeMDn-AQ “We've had two old hickory pits for 13 years that have built our brand,” Shawn Walchef noted on Digital Hospitality. “They built our business. We've done over $30 million in sales just using those two pits and now we've added three more pits in the pandemic and are building a master smokehouse.” While the San Diego multi-hyphenate is thankful for the pits and hopeful for the future, the BBQ Hall of Famer couldn't be happier. “Our favorite thing is to shine in reflected glory of the success of our customers,” admits David. After years of going door to door selling his pits, David has become not just a community builder with his pits but an entrepreneur in the food and entertainment industry. Becoming friends with the likes of Guy Fieri and helping all kindred souls with a love of the smoke who come his way, David has grown Ole Hickory Pits by keeping an open mind and extending a helping hand. In fact, in the last ten years, David has fed over nine million people hot barbecue as part of relief efforts that have devastated various parts of the United States. Even when times are tough, David Knight and Ole Hickory Pits are committed to working hard and empowering others. “It's personal and it's really a fun sort of business,” reflects David on a life in barbecue. “Warren Buffett said that the happiest man in the world is the one that dances to work every morning. Well, you can see me skipping down the sidewalk, going to the office, because I still enjoy it.” As expressed, the foundation of Ole Hickory Pits allows not just David to smile all the way to work, but plenty of other entrepreneurs the opportunity to possess the same spirit in the same space. This of course includes Shawn who is using Ole Hickory Pits to take Cali BBQ and Cali BBQ Media to the next level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57N0IGa-HTs “We plan on having ten Ole Hickory Pits and building a media center around it,” begins Shawn, “So that we can teach other people around the world how they can build one location, a commissary kitchen, and then have these ghost kitchen micro-locations so that we can get more barbecue to more people. We can make a bigger impact on the world.” The ‘each one, teach one' ethos are fully embedded in the barbecue community and definitely are shown by the examples of those who have learned from David.
Carl talks with Bob Tuschman, former Food Network Senior Vice President and General Manager. To say Bob “worked his way up to the top” is an understatement! He started from a lowly production assistant to Diana Ross's personal assistant, to a “Good Morning America” producer and then to a top position at the Food Network. Bob played a major role in the early TV success of Guy Fieri, Giada, Ina Garten and Bobby Flay. Now happily teaching at NYU, Bob gives some great (Un)Retirement advice on how to create a successful plan for this next stage of life. • More About Bob Tuschman: - https://www.foodnetwork.com/profiles/talent/bob-tuschman/bio - https://www.stern.nyu.edu/faculty/bio/bob-tuschman • Episode Content: https://pickleballmediahq.com/blog/Bob-Tuschman-Interview-Former-Food-Network-Exec-Now-Gets-Top-Ratings-at-NYU • Subscribe "I Used to be Somebody" newsletter: https://pickleballmediahq.com/contact/subscribe

Lots of laughs here as you listen to 2 friends having dinner. Love ya miss ya Carl. Not even close to forgotten. Thank you so much for your amazing friendship. Shane Torres started doing comedy in Portland, Oregon after moving there from Fort Worth, Texas. He's incredibly funny, and also one of the kindest and realest people I've ever known. That makes him terrible to be on the pod, but oh well (JOKE!). Shane blew up on the national scene when his joke about Guy Fieri went viral, and for good reason. It's a monster. Shane used to open for me on the road, and I miss having him around. It was great to have him on the show, not only to help THE MIGHTYS, but also to see him again. THE CALLS: 1) A man has a chance to move where he wants to live, but they won't pay him enough to live comfortably there. Worth it, or should he stay put? 2) A guy's first comedy show in two years is coming up. WHAT SHOULD BE WEAR?? 3) A caller wants to know, when is it too fast (or too slow) to move in with someone? Asking for a him. We also added a speed round in which I read some Qs given to me for Shane on my IG feed. Enjoy! The Love YA Miss YA series is dedicated to my 2 dear friends Carl Ruiz and Vic Henley. Gone way too soon and simply 2 of the funniest and big hearted people I ever knew. On this episode I found some lost audio from a very early hang at Gebhards Beer Culture. This was just a couple months before we officially started the "Opie Radio" podcast from Carl's Creepy Cabin. The audio is just ok and the WiFi kept crapping out that day but there's enough here to laugh your ass off. RIP Carl and Vic.
