Jono Diener was the drummer of Michigan-based punk rock band The Swellers from 2002-2015. Since the group's departure, Jono has found himself taking part in many different ventures. Being a hired gun for a few years for bands like The Early November and Versus the World, he eventually joined No Trigger and toured all over the world with them. He also took a break from being behind the kit to fronting the band Baggage with bass and vocal duties taking center stage. He co-founded Rootless Coffee in 2020 providing ethically sourced roasting with a variety of intricate flavors for customers to choose from. He's also an acclaimed comic book artist and an avid runner. His newest band, 84 Tigers recently opened for Nada Surf and released their debut full-length record, "Time in the Lighthouse" in 2022.
Having formed less than a year ago, Boston's Massive Nightmares is already on their way to making waves in the independent music scene. On September 6th, 2024, the band will released their debut EP, recorded with Trevor Reilly of A Wilhelm Scream fame. The result is a self-released five track EP that serves as an amazing introduction to the band. This week's guest is No Trigger vocalist Tom Rheault. Though the long-running Massachusetts melodic punk project doesn't put out albums very often, they really make it count when they do. The 20-year vets released Dr. Album — only the band's third album ever, and its first since early 2012 — last month, and now they're playing some shows in support of the exceptional Red Scare Industries record. No Trigger performed at Riot Fest last weekend and they're gearing up to play a Punk In Drublic tour stop in their hometown of Worcester this weekend. Before both of those shows (as well as a show with The Lawrence Arms on Sept. 30 and an upcoming appearance at The Fest in October), Rheault spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the making of Dr. Album, getting back on the road and plans for 2023. Along the way, the singer talked about the early impact bands like NOFX and Rancid had on his musical trajectory, playing shows at gymnasiums and all-ages venues (where he regrettably threw pastries everywhere), starting the band that would eventually turn into No Trigger, unforgettable experiences he's had on stage and on tour through the years, and why people should consider micro-dosing. In this episode, I have the opportunity to sit down with The Sweller's drummer Jonathan "Jono" Diener. Jonathan is also the front man for his most recent musical project Baggage. He's also in the musical projects Braided Veins and No Trigger. Jonathan has recently been working to promote his new coffee company Rootless Coffee out of Flint Michigan where he lives. Jonathan and I talk about marketing, creativity, and identity, and how they are all interconnected when it comes to pursuing new projects. Whether it be playing in bands, starting companies, or writing blogs and articles, Jono does a great job at juggling a lot of plates and producing a lot of really cool things. It was a pleasure to talk with him, and I think anyone with a passion for creativity and art will take something away from our conversation. Enjoy! The Swellers were an American punk band from Flint, Michigan. Their music is influenced by melodic punk rock bands as well as alternative and indie rock from the 1990s. It was announced April 22, 2011, through Alternative Press that the new album titled Good For Me would be released on June 14, where one of the new tracks called "Best I Ever Had" could be streamed. In April 2012 they announced their departure from the Fueled by Ramen label. They would release a 7" (Vehicle City Blues) on Side One Dummy Records. On October 16, The Swellers self-released an EP entitled Running Out Of Places To Go. It is composed of five songs that the band recorded and produced independently. The Swellers signed to No Sleep Records in May 2013 and announced in August 2013 that they would be releasing their 4th full length, The Light Under Closed Doors, on October 29. On April 15, 2014, The Swellers announced via Facebook their release of "B-sides and Rarities." On June 24, 2014 they announced via Facebook and Twitter that they are breaking up and booking farewell shows. In February and March 2015, the band performed at Soundwave festival in Australia. Jono Diener is a musician and comic book writer based out of Flint, Michigan. He’s performed in bands like The Swellers, Baggage, and No Trigger to name a few. Diener put together A Comic For Flint: HOPE released by Source Point Press, and is featured in the anthologies Maybe Someday (A Wave Blue World), and Everything Is Going Wrong: Comics on Punk and Mental Illness in addition to his self-published titles Monster Bounty, and Jetpack Zack. In this week’s episode, Adrian chats with Jono about his comic book writing career and his involvement in THE INEVITABLES, an art/music project which was created by Vinnie Fiorello (Less Than Jake) and Obi Fernandez (Westbound Train) and features artist Liana Kangas (She Said Destroy), designer Devin Watson, artist Fabian Lelay (We Are The Danger) and letterer Cardinal Rae (Forgotten Home). Swanson and his team were looking for Osama bin Laden and it looked like they found him. The predator, though, was unarmed.
